Which do you think is a better long term investment, MBP 13" or Zephyrus G14?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 11:14 AM PDT

So i'm looking for a fairly compact and portable laptop that has good battery life and is decently powerful. I may do some light gaming, but this will mainly be for some work (I work in IT as a sys admin) and normal browsing online/watching movies. Also, i'm looking at this more long term like 3 or 4+ years.

I like the m1 macbook pro because build-wise it's built like a tank and has really good battery life, but i don't care for OS X, the port selection is super minimal, and i'd like to be able to throw linux on it. Yes i know about virtualizing it, but i'd rather have it run native and i know there's a build of linux for apple's m1 processors but from what i've heard it's still early going.

The Asus Zephyrus g14 2022 is what i'm looking at on the pc side and it checks every one of the boxes that i'm looking at except the battery life isn't nearly as good as the m1 chip and yeah i know that's just how things are going to be until amd/intel really figure out how to lower power consumption and secondly i'm a bit concerned about build quality, i just want to know how well the zephyrus would handle being accidentally dropped.

Anyone have their opinions on this?

    Laptop advice needed

    Posted: 28 May 2022 02:31 PM PDT

    Hiya!

Gotta get myself a 15-16 inch laptop (occasional prolonged work stays away from home) and kinda got overwhelmed with options to the point of paralysis, so a piece of good advice is golden :)

    Requirements:

    • shall last 5-6 years without me cursing the day I bought it (provided there are no HW malfunctions)
    • some working will be done kinda outdoors (e.g. on a train, window seat)
    • my current desktop has E3-1231 v3/16 GB RAM. If the new laptop proves to be more potent (which I guess is a given for anything with a 2021-22 i3/ryzen 3 and higher in it), I'll probably make it my main machine, so io wise: 1. a mouse (wireless), 2. a 2-SSD/HDD usb dock or a usb headset, 3. a usb audio interface, 4. RJ-45.
    • my typical workload: 80% office/remote desktop, 20% music production (Ableton). The gaming is occasional (5-6 new titles a year) and I sometimes revisit older titles. I do tend to keep a large number of browser tabs open on my desktop all the time (2 monitor setup) though, but that habit can be subdued :D

    Questions:

    1. Is it worth paying a little extra on 3y vs 2y warranty?
    2. As I don't want to void the warranty by dismantling a laptop for the RAM/storage upgrades, would it make sense to pay extra for 16GB RAM/512GB SSD? A laptop with 8GB RAM and 256 SSD costs around 120-160€ less then it's sibling sporting the same CPU but double the RAM/storage. So it's a rip off as the damn parts cost around 80-100€ (and if you deduct the 256 SSD cost, even less). Will I be able to safely wait out till the warranty is over (2-3y) and throw in the new parts afterwards?
    3. Based on the workload (+some future-proofing), what segment shall I aim at? I can scale up to around 700€, provided I can justify a long term solution (again, barring HW mishaps from the equation).
    4. Display wise, I don't consider the ones with TN panels. Are SVA panels to be avoided too?
    5. I work remotely most of the time, and while I have a home wifi network, I've got the PC connected via cable for maximum speed and stability. I noticed some models do not have the RJ-45 port at all, so I wonder if I need to cross them out from the list.
    6. Zen 2 vs Zen 3 dilemma (thank you, AMD)... Have not been able to find a proper review of 5400U, so no clue how it compares to 5500U, for instance. The pricing here (Slovakia) seems to favor 5500U, so I wonder if the architectural improvements are so massive to negate the core/thread disadvantage. If a 5400U/16GB/512GB laptop costs 600€ and a 5500U/8GB/512GB goes for 450€... with all things more or less equal, does this make sense?

    Thx!

    Laptop Suggestion

    Posted: 28 May 2022 01:31 PM PDT

Today my old pc died, so Im looking for new laptop, but I have no idea which one.

    BUDGET - 1300€ and lower

FOR WHAT USE - Mainly Photoshop, After Effects, Ilustrator, Fl studio

GAMING - Nothing crazy, CSGO, Minecraft, Steep

SPECS - Best would be 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage with 15'6 or 17'3 display with 100% srgb for best color accuracy

CPU and GPU is problem for me. Im not sure on the higher end components, because if mid end components would be enough for this stuff, than why would I throw more money for not necasary power.

Right now I have my eyes on Lenovo Legion 5.

I will be very happy for suggestions.

Between these two lenovo's, which is the better deal?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 12:47 PM PDT

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help here!

I found these two Lenovo deals and, although I have no need for 2-in-1's, these deals seem very good to me but I wanted to run it by you all to get your thoughts and see if I'm missing anything:

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx1/x1-yoga-g6/20xy0022us

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx1/x1-yoga-gen-5/20ub0067us

One specific question I have is about difference in RAM: Is it better to take the older gen version for the 16GB RAM vs. the newer gen with the 8GB RAM? Or the opposite?

Again, thanks for any help here.

    Need suggestions

    Posted: 28 May 2022 12:22 PM PDT

Hi, so I'm looking for a laptop that can run games like Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 5, Apex Legends, Fortnite etc at 50-60 FPS in low/ medium settings. I'll buy it from Japan (online), and my budget is around 80k-90k JPY. Idk if I'll find a laptop like this around this budget but it's worth trying. Thanks in advance. 😊

Lenovo laptop running 24/7 battery life

    Posted: 28 May 2022 05:39 AM PDT

Lenovo laptop hosting some stuff, it has been on for about 4 months, no shutdown, always plugged in. Cannot remove the battery. Let it charge to 100% but apprarently, not the way to go. Ppl say let it charge till 80% and fall until like 40%. Idk how to do this on Windows 10? Also, what is the best threshold? Is it really 80%-40% or 80%-30% or 70%-50%? Getting conflicting answers.

Is the Acer Swift 14’ a good choice for a student

    Posted: 28 May 2022 10:03 AM PDT

I've been looking at laptops, and I found one that I think would be a good choice. Is the Acer Swift 14' a good laptop? It has:

-1.1GHz Intel ICD N4500 processor and 4GB of DDR4 memory allow you to handle your day-to-day tasks efficiently

-128GB eMMC provides a sufficient storage space to save files, documents, folders, and more

-14-inch IPS display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution deliver clear and crisp pictures for a comfortable viewing experience

-Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 establishes a reliable wireless internet connection with available office or home networks

-Bluetooth 5.1 for wirelessly connecting with Bluetooth-enabled devices like keyboard, mouse, and speakers

-Lithium-ion battery with a 48Wh capacity ensures uninterrupted computing for up to 15 hours

-Ultra-thin and lightweight design for easy portability and storage inside your backpack

-One USB Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, one HDMI port with HDCP support, and one 3.5mm headphone/speaker jack for -multiple connectivity options

-Built-in webcam lets you make video calls, snap photos, and shoot videos

-Windows 11 S operating system offers an intuitive user interface with improved security features

I'm pretty sure I understand the gist of it, but this is my first laptop and I need some advice. I'll be mainly using the laptop for school, such as Word and Powerpoint and all that, with some occasional YouTube watching and maybe Spotify. Would this be a good choice?

Are the 12th gen intel chips worth waiting for?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 09:49 AM PDT

Need a new laptop but they seem either in short supply or way overpriced. Are they that much better than current AMD or 11th gen to be worth the wait/price?

    Constant Fan and Rattling

    Posted: 28 May 2022 09:47 AM PDT

I recently bought the HP Pavilion Laptop - 15t-eg100: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-pavilion-laptop-15t-eg100-touch-optional-43f54av-1?pStoreID=hp_education. The laptop is great besides the fact that the fan runs sometimes when it's idle and excessively with literally any application including Microsoft edge. There seem to be two spots within the laptop that make a sort of faint rattling noise constantly. I'm no laptop user, I've been using a PC for my whole life, but I needed a laptop for college. Is this normal and is there a way to combat this?
