Need Help Looking for a good school laptop

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 08:49 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Do you guys have a good suggestion for a work/school laptop. I want a decent laptop for doing primarily school work and entertainment (watching movies and vids). I'm not looking for a gaming laptop and would much prefer a non gaming look.

I would also like to have the following

    - 16 GB RAM (or the ability to upgrade)

    - 512 GB SSD (or the ability to upgrade)

    - Good Screen

    - Decent Battery life/length

My budget is around $1500 (CAD) which is about $1200 (USD) not including tax and other fees

I guess I'm looking for any laptop that has those specs or is able to be upgraded to it. I won't mind buying a device that needs upgrading. Thanks

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 AMD vs Intel

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 09:25 PM PST

Hi! I have decided on the Inspiron 15 5000 and I'm stuck between the model with the AMD 4700U or the Intel i7 1165G7. Both have 8gb of ram that I would upgrade to 16 or 32 in the future. My primary use is general office work and the occasional game. I don't play games on a PC very often, and nothing more demanding than Minecraft or CSGO, so I don't think I need a gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU.

The two models seem identical and the price ($800 CAN) is the same, so basically I just need advice on the performance and battery life of the two models.

Acer Nitro 5 or MSI GL65

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 11:47 AM PST

Hello, I'm quite new to the gaming scene, but i need to buy a new laptop for university and I'd like to just get as much as possible out of it, both gaming and my university stuff (i do civil engineering, but am considering changing to game design/art)

The two options I'm doubting between are the

    Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-70CH EAN: 4710886090595

    and the

    MSI GL65 9SFX-466NL EAN: 4719072760625

Both have 1TB SSD and a 144Hz screen

The Acer has an Intel Core i7 10th gen and a rtx 2060

The MSI has an Intel Core i7 9th gen and a rtx 2070

For the rest the battery life of the Acer is a bit better at 57Wh vs 51Wh

I tried to find reviews online but the information was very contradictory, and everyone seems to have a slightly different type. I was first leaning towards the Acer but then i saw people saying MSI has just better laptops.

I want a reliable laptop that will last long and can play games (i mainly play open world rpgs and shooters) but also simulations, 3d modelling, 2d drawing programs and game engines.

Both are currently at the same price for me, which one is best?

Links about all specs (in dutch, hopefully google translate can make things clear)

Hey guys, I need a suggestion for a laptop for school and light gaming. (Dell G3, Legion 5)

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:44 AM PST

My current laptop is becoming old and slow, and I'm looking to buy a laptop that I will be bringing to school everyday and to play some games that aren't very demanding such as league of legends on at least 100fps. I don't care much about weight, so heavier laptops are fine. My budget is around 7000-8000HKD, which is somewhere under 1000 USD. Please suggest a laptop that would be suitable for me, or tell me if any of the choices I've listed below are to be avoided. I've been looking at these models:

    dell G3

lenovo legion 5 (i will only purchase this when it goes on sale)

Been using a (used) 2009Macbook Pro for about 10 years but am willing to use other systems.

    Hello!

I need to buy a new laptop, have been using a 2009 Macbook Pro but it's struggling to turn on sometimes and often is very slow. Also its speakers are blown. I've been using Macbook for 10 years but am willing to buy something else, considering I can't afford to buy a new Macbook.

    Usage:
Zoom calls for school classes and meetings with clients
Entry level graphic design & video editing
Website design, blogging, emails, scheduling etc.
Able to have multiple programs open without slowing down

I found a 2015 used Macbook Pro: 3.1GHz, Core i5 processor, 8gb memory, 128gb storage for $1200 plus tax. Would it be worth it to spend the same on a new laptop that's not Mac?
I've also found a 2020 Macbook Pro (not used), can't find the specs as listed above but has the M1 8-core for $1699 + tax. That's way more than I'd like to be paying.

I'm wanting to pay around $1000-1200 CAD

    Appreciate any help!

Lenovo E14 Gen 2 vs Macbook Pro 13" vs other??

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:08 AM PST

    Hello,

I am trying to decide on a new laptop since my 2014 Macbook pro became the victim of water damage! I am looking for a laptop that will be reasonably long-lasting for a max of €1200. I will use it for general college use word, PowerPoint, zoom, etc along with some bioinformatics and programming.

    Questionnaire

    • Total Budget €1200
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Only Apple certified
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and build quality are important. Average battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I will be cycling with it to and from college so would rather it not be overly heavy.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? 13-15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is important. Touch screen not important
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would like it to have:

    • Processor - i5/i7 or equivalent
    • RAM - 16GB
    • Minimum 256GB SSD

I am considering these two options but I am very open to suggestions of other laptops around the same price point and specifications

    Apple Refurbished 2020 Macbook Pro 1.4GHz i5 processor, 16GB RAM, and 256BG SSD (with discount c. €1150)

Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 with either an i7-1165G7 OR AMD Ryzen 7-4700U, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD (c. €1000)

I am wondering how big a difference in performance there would be between the two? Also for the E14 which processor would be better between Intel and AMD? I also have some concerns about the build quality of the E14 but have read this is much improved in Gen 2? As I said I am open to other suggestions and thanks in advance!

UK, £2500 approx, business and AAA gaming

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:52 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      £2500 (gbp) approximately, exc VAT

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Performance, heat, battery, weight

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Fairly important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15inch, preferably QHD or 4K (less worried about frame rate for gaming)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

AAA to Indie gaming, full day of email/browsing/conf calls

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      Latest AAA and indie titles

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Primarily using an external monitor, keyboard and mouse but will need a decent keyboard and trackpad for portability during business travel and meetings

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Must be a laptop (no business option for a desktop right now), gaming will be in general shorter periods but running up to the latest AAA titles. Keen to not have the laptop run at super high temps with loud fans while doing general day-to-day business email/browsing/calls. Options I've so far identified are Razer Blade 15, Alienware M15 R3 or ASUS TUF A15 for a slightly lower price point (though conscious of CES announcements imminently). Laptop needs to be purchased in the next month or so, so waiting for AMD CPUs/GPUs might not be feasible.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Looking for a laptop that can do light video editing and is good for students. Budget is $1200 CAD.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:57 AM PST

My sister's 15th birthday is coming up soon and we would like to buy her a new laptop, as she's been using a hand-me-down macbook pro from 2012. She likes to edit short clips on after effects sometimes as a hobby.

It doesn't have to be anything amazing as she will be using the laptop mostly for school; we just want something that can run after effects smoothly for videos in 1080p. She really likes the look and outward design of the 13 inch HP envy x360 (8GB RAM, AMD ryzen 5 4500u processor). There's also a 15.6 inch option (also 8GB RAM, intel i5-1035G1), but we're not sure if the size is good for carrying around everywhere.

I know nothing about laptops so I don't know if either of these will do the job, or if we should look for something else entirely. Or maybe they're overkill? I have no clue. We'd like something light and thin with a screen that can rotate 360 degrees. Preferably packaged with a stylus. Would appreciate some help/advice. Thank you!

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a laptop for my girlfriend, she's a professional photographer and doesn't need an incredibly powerful machine, in terms of powerful I'd say, it'd have to be able to run photoshop sessions, Lightroom etc, and for example, web browsing (a lot of tabs for example). The main thing I'm looking for is for a good quality screen with good color accuracy and good portability (so, not a gaming laptop's thickness/weight).

I've found this which looks like a good deal if customized with a 4K 500nits screen, 16gb ram and comes out at £1200 but the CPU is pretty bad though isn't it?

Is the Samsung Galaxy Book S (Intel) a decent laptop?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 07:01 PM PST

    Hi all

Been looking for a laptop for a long time. Found the galaxy book S, intel version. What do you think about this? I like the fanless design, super lightweight, premium build quality, etc.

My only concern is that I live in Australia, and I need to order this from Samsung US. The one on sale in Australia is the qualcomm processor which I don't want, I prefer the Intel instead.

Please let me know if you think there is anything I need to know. Thanks in advance.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:58 PM PST

11 years throughout college. It eventually gave out and now I'm deciding between these two:

    Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2 in 1---------- i5 Processor/8GB of Ram

    And

Lenovo Ideapad Slim 7 ----------i7 Processor / 12 GB of Ram

I originally bought the Inspiron until a tech guy at a repair shop recommended me the Lenovo. Decided to buy the two and make the final choice which one I should stick with after assessing both of them.

I love the Dell's touch-screen and ability to turn the screen all the way around but I also like Lenovo's specs. I've also taken both of their weights/thinness as big priorities since I'm constantly traveling and need to bring my laptop everywhere.

For some background, besides the everyday stuff like browsing/youtube I own two e-commerce businesses that are on Wix and Squarespace. These sites used to crash my old HP. Will Lenovo's specs make a huge difference considering this?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Looking for a laptop that cost around 550-650$

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:34 PM PST

Trying to buy a laptop for school and some gaming as I just got a stimulus and have been wanting one for a while

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
650$ is the max I can pay for one as of now
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Actually preferred over new as long as it's in good condition
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance first and then battery life second
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I want it to be relatively light since it will be staying in my backpack
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly just light gaming and video watching
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Honestly no idea but I do have a pc with a 3070 for heavy gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like a decently good keyboard if possible
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Don't really have anything extra to say

Looking for a decent laptop meeting these requirements

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:16 PM PST

    Hi,

I am looking for a decent laptop meeting the following requirements.

    • A high performance CPU: Intel H/HK/HQ or better (can also be a Xeon) or Ryzen H/HS or better
    • A discrete Nvidia GTX/RTX/Quadro GPU
    • A full size keyboard (I want the numpad)
    • A 15" or 17" screen
    • Not more than $2000 CAN ($1600 USD)

I would prefer something that doesn't look like a gaming laptop. The thiner the better as long as it doesn't impact the performance or the autonomy.

Looking for a laptop that's perfect for jigsaw puzzles and browsing.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:00 PM PST

My grandma enjoys doing online jigsaw puzzles and watching YouTube, but the laptop she's using is quite slow and low spec. It's an 8 year old Acer with a 17" 900p non-touch screen and a terrible trackpad. I'm looking for something that would allow her to continue to play from the couch, but is considerably higher quality. It's got to have at least a 17" screen with at least 1080p resolution, and have solid build quality. She doesn't need a discreet GPU, or thunderbolt ports, or cellular, or anything else that a tech-savvy person would look for in a laptop. Just a large (>= 17") high res screen in a solid chassis. Bonus if it has touchscreen or is a convertible/2-in-1. Thanks

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
      $1000 CAD in Canada
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No, preferably new but doesn't have to be latest model
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Classic clamshell or 2-in-1, priority on build quality and usable performance.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important at all, will stay at home
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      17" or larger if available
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No programs aside from web browsing, maybe jigsaw games off Steam
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Jigsaw games, probably not very intensive lol
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Must have a good trackpad, touch screen a bonus but not necessary. Don't need an optical drive, diverse port selection, cellular, etc.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
