Please read this before you buy your laptop

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 09:07 PM PST

Hey guys happy Thanksgiving I hope that you have enjoyed your turkey, before you buy your laptop you need to make sure of the following :

    • 1- You shouldn't care how big the discount is, a lot of the times you will find laptop's with 500$ discount or 1000$ discount, that doesn't mean anything you need to compare how much are you actually paying for the specs with other options with the same specs to decide if it's a good deal or not .

    • 2- If Your are buying a gaming laptop you need to make sure of the screen refresh rate, I would recommend that you get at least a 120Hz. If you are buying a laptop with a GTX 1660Ti or above, there is even a few laptop's with a GTX 1650 and a 120Hz. screen for great price like the Asus Tuf, if the screen refresh rate isn't mentioned 95% of the time it's 60Hz. only, if you are not sure just come and ask here and I will look it up for you .

    • 3- Again with the screen, if you want to use the laptop for photo and video editing you need to make sure that the laptop has a good screen, there is a few laptops right now with OLED screens like the Aero 15 which has one of the best color accurate screens and a good discount right now as well, but keep in mind that most OLED displays are 60Hz. only so they won't give the best gaming experience especially for shooter games so you need to decide what is more important for your usage .

    • 4- GPU, not all GPUs are equal even if they are advertised with the same name, let me explain first every GPU has a normal option (Max P) and a less powerful (Max Q) option and within each of this options the manufacturer set them to use different amount of power, Now they mostly hide all this information especially if it's the Max Q option and you have to search for it but it's important to know because some of the Full RTX 2060 for example will out perform the Max Q RTX 2070, again if you are not sure I will be glad to help you out .

    • 5- CPU, This is a very tricky part because of Intel's naming but I will try to make it as sample as possible , if you need the laptop for every day use get something with any of the following I5-8250U,I5-8265U,I7-8550U,I7-8565U they are almost the same get the cheapest, If you need this for gaming or CPU intensive tasks get one of the following I5-8300H,I5-9300H again they are almost the same, if you need something more powerful then look for the I7-8750H,I7-9750H but you need to be careful when choosing something with those option because they get hot and need a laptop with good cooling system .

    • 6- RAM, dual channel memory setup will give you around 20% better performance than a 1 stick setup, so if you have the option while buying to choose, a 2x4 option might even be better than a 1x16 option another important thing is that you need to make sure that you can upgrade the RAM and that it's not soldered to the motherboard otherwise you should get 16GB because you will not be able to upgrade it in the future

    • 7- Definitely get something with an SSD

    • 8- Because it's black Friday it's a good time to buy the peripherals you need as well as storage I have a Complete list of options to start with .

    • 9- If You have anything else that you think is worth checking before buying a laptop please share it with us 😊.

    • The top of the laptop plus the keyboard and palm area are metal.
    • Screen bright enough for using outside in the shade but not in direct sunlight.
    • GPU is powerful enough for the mentioned games to be played on high settings.
    • Here is benchmark for the GPU performance.
    • Laptop comes with Optimus to conserve battery.
    • Keyboard is great, quiet, and have a nice feel.
    • Keyboard has a numpad but narrower than the rest of the keyboard, and the arrow buttons shifted.
    • Speakers are at the bottom and kinda muffed so a headset is recommended for when you are gaming.

Best budget 2-in-1 convertible for a student ~500-600€ [Germany]

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:58 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: deally around 500-600€, but if it makes a lot of sense maybe reluctantly higher. Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am thinking that a 2-in-1 convertible with pen support might be even better than a conventional laptop. But i don't have any experience with them myself, maybe someone could give me feedback if it is worth it?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not hugely important as it will be stationary a lot. But ofc nice to have regardless and since it won't be a gaming laptop i assume none of them will be bricks anyways

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but no OS would also be fine

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No performance or graphic intensive tasks, just your regular office/PDFs/browsing/watching movies

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and build quality, ideally a nice screen aswell

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Spec wise i'd say any i5/7 >=8th gen or 3rd gen Ryzen (probably intel for battery life, i feel like i shouldn't bother with 2core processors in 2019), 8gb RAM, >=250gb SSD, good (ideally backlit) keyboard, solid build quality and a decent 1080p IPS screen would be best. Long battery life would be nice and low weight aswell, but it'll be plugged in a lot so not the highest priority. I guess USB-C charging with display port passthrough (so a dock with a single connector could be added later) would be nice, but probably not possible in the price range. Most seem to be 14", but how is 15.6" for a convertible (or is that already too large to be comfortable)?

here is a filtered list to show some of the prices. Although i also have access to student discounts, e.g. here. Links in german but should be understandable anways.

I could use some help choose between some of the options:

My frontrunner currently is the Lenovo Ideapad C340. Main downside seems to be the somewhat dimm display with low color accuracy, but that seems to be the norm in this price range. Price wise depending on the exact configuration those currently cost between 500-600€

So the alternatives would be the HP Pavilion/envy X360, Acer Spin 3, Asus VivoBook/Zenbook 14 or maybe Dell Inspiron 14 5482 2-in-1. Some of those however are already stretching the budget. And the Lenovo Campus Yoga C740 for 850€ seems really nice, but since the original plan was closer to 500€ it is quite a bit above that.

Or should i just not bother with the convertible feature and get a regular 14-15.6" laptop. Maybe a Thinkpad, something from Dell or an Asus Zenbook? In that case what would the go to recommendations for just a solid quality conventional 15.6" laptop be?

    Need upgrade advice

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:43 AM PST

I've recently purchased an HP Pavilion 15 gaming laptop with i5 9300H & GTX 1050 3GB from Walmart for $500 ($150 off Black F sale). It comes with 1 8GB ddr 4 2666 ram stick. I think max cap is 32GB. It's got 2 total ram slots and one of them is empty. I have a BALLISTIX SPORT 8GB kit 2x4GB ddr4 RAM sticks rated at 2400 speed and 1.2V.

My question is if I add one 4GB ram stick(2400) to the existing 8GB(2666) one will I get dual channel memory? I know it'll run at the slower speed (2400). Also, is it possible to overclock the 4GB one to 2666? If not then will slower speed and more ram hurt my gaming performance? Is it worth adding extra 4GB if it's going to run at slower speed single channel?

Here is the link to the laptop if anyone's interested. I think it's a great deal for what you're getting.

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Acid-FHD-NVIDIA-GDDR5-HP-Shadow-GTX-3-Intel-GeForce-Pavilion-Black-8GB-GB-Core-1050-i5-9300H-SSD-15-dk0068wm-Laptop-Green-256GB-SDRAM-15-6-Gaming/578241214

    Thanks!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 06:58 PM PST

Someone else posted a very similar thread today but I had some additional questions and didn't want to piggy back off of their thread, which is here

    Hope this is okay.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Under $1500, lower is best. I don't have a steady job right now, and my mother has offered to loan me part of the cost, but I'd like to not be too indebted. I will use this laptop in part for work.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life etc? I'm really looking for a 2 in 1, mainly because they can be good for art. My last laptop was a 2 in one but it didn't have pen capabilities. I'd really like something that uses windows ink/is pen capable, so I can use it with Adobe products and various drawing software. I also would like to use it in tablet mode connected to my keyboard (the music kind of keyboard) for piano practice, and a 2 in 1 works best for that*

How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd prefer it to not be too heavy. I'm using my ancient 8 pound behemoth from 2009 right now and it's way too big. Under 5 pounds preferred.*

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows*

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Under 17". I'm stuck trying to decide between 15" and 13". *

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do light photo editing, and will hopefully be doing some very light video editing, not sure which editor I will use yet. I will also use it for moderate gaming. I've had to use OBS in the past for work, too and it never ran smooth so I'd like a laptop that can actually record my screen without kaggig do much that the audio is years behind the video.*

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The Sims 4, with a ton of CC and mods, Apex, various medium to high spec games and some older games too. I usually play on medium to high settings for games. I know a 2 in 1 isn't meant for gaming, but there has to be one that can handle medium spec gaming, right?

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Prefer a good build because my last laptop died within a year, ssd a must. *

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Questions: first, the dudes at Best buy told me I'll need 16 gigs of RAM. Is 16 gigs too much? I'd like the laptop to last awhile but it also ups the cost. I was also told that I need a discrete graphics card. Is that true? I'm worried about overheating, especially with discrete graphics. My last laptop would overheat with even just chrome up with one tab, and the fans would blow so loud that I couldn't think. It also got so hot at one point that I got burned and I don't want a repeat.

I've been considering one of the Lenovo Yoga 730 laptops or an HP Spectre, but I'm not sure if either of those are the right way to go. I've also heard some of the Asus zenbook's might fit the bill but again I don't know.

Any advice welcome. Thanks for a great sub!

Please help me decide between 2 laptops

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:35 AM PST

Background: I want to buy a laptop and I'm not a gamer. I need it for doing personal work + office work. So I need more robust and sturdy machine with good processor.

After my research I finalized two laptops:

    1. https://store.hp.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ConfigureView?catalogId=10051&langId=-1&storeId=10151&krypto=%2F2c%2FxKOS1A%2FYOTBo3mJqt2UbT%2FUR6mcPYvWwwRbTJoHAK2Jlq5LTNdxyo%2BKXdtEIDHQvb%2F73G5wJWrs0fjrv79nhKdUMs%2Fm7B4isWcsH1IE8aUHBPgngrPOKZRQT59CEDpYqgo2QbCJgQNQLyAbW4fUeKtC78XhgUbiojSTpSug%3D&ddkey=https%3AConfigureView
    2. https://www.walmart.com/ip/14-dq1040wm-Solid-UHD-M-2-Display-256-16GB-Drive-GB-14-memory-i5-1035G1-14-Optane-Core-Graphics-Hp-Intel-Pale-Gold-Laptop-State-8-SDRAM-HD/780129533?selected=true

There is a substantial difference in price. All I'm wondering about mainly three things:

    1. Processor Speed: as how much difference would it really make; i5 10210U vs i5 1035G1.
    2. Battery: 4 cell 53 Wh Vs 3 cell 41 Wh
    3. Build Quality: Which one is better Envy or 2nd one (I don't know what model it is).

My heart is going for Envy because of higher processor and model (touch / X360/ Stylus Pen) but then I think 15.6" screen size may be too much and also it costs high as currently I'm using Mac Air 13". Please solve my dilemma.

P.S.: If you guessed me right and have any other laptop to suggest, please feel free :).

Does it make sense buying a notebook with only 256 gb SSD and then downloading the most of the programs on an external HDD?

Choosing between Asus Zenbook UX533FD and UX480FD (Europe)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 03:35 AM PST

Hi! I'm trying to decide which one of these laptops to get. UX533FD and UX480FD.

I need it to replace my current 7-year-old laptop, and it will be my main PC for at least a year (probably more) until I can build a desktop one. I use it for schoolwork, netflix, etc... and some gaming (mainly LoL and Sims, nothing too demanding). I'm not interested in playing AAA in max settings, so while I want a dedicated GPU a 1050 is more than enough (and a big jump from my GT630M).

Both of these are similar in price and specs - The 15" one is a bit better I think and has more RAM, but I would prefer a smaller one, hence the 14". Buuuut the 15" has the spanish keyboard (which I would like, but it's not a dealbreaker).

    Opinions? Thanksssss

    UK laptop buying advice

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 03:31 AM PST

Hi all, need a recommendation on what laptop to buy, i havent bought a pc or laptop in a few years so ive gone abit clueless on what too look for now. Only want to spend 400 and must be from pc world (currys) im going to be buying 2 of the same and already having stuff on finance with them its ideal to just throw it on top off what i already have, mainly going to be used for internet browsing and mild retro gaming so i dont need a power house, something that will comfortably run warcraft 3 and WoW on low quality. Ideally a decent sized screen too, thanks in advance!

Help me decide between these two Laptops!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 09:24 PM PST

I've decided I want to get an Acer Aspire 5. I've found two models of it and I'm not sure which one to get. This one from Newegg or this one from Acer. The only difference I can spot with my untrained eyes is that the Acer one has 12gb RAM as opposed to 8. Everything in the Acer store is 25% off, so in the end the Newegg one is around $533 and the Acer one is around $560. Is it worth the extra 30 bucks for more RAM? Is there any other difference I'm missing? Is it better to purchase from one of these sellers than the other? Please help! Thank you!

So I have had an HP Pavilion for the past 7 years. It has served me well, but I need to upgrade because it just can't handle Windows 10. I have been looking at another HP Pavilion, as well as a Lenovo IdeaPad S540 - but am open to alternate suggestions / recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Surface Pro 7 or Surface Go? For taking notes mainly

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 09:01 PM PST

I was deciding on these two laptops or other 2 in 1's.

I just want to take notes (on google docs) and play some basic io games every once in a while throughout a six-hour school day. I will probably have it on 3 hours of the 6, sometimes a bit more maybe a bit less.

Would the Surface Go have enough processing power to take notes for these 3-4 hours?

I would rather the Surface Go since it is a lot cheaper, but if the life of it won't last I am fine to buy the Surface Pro 7 or other 2 in 1's, just wanted yall's opinion.

After a laptop in the UK for £300 Help!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:55 AM PST

Edit: didn't fill out the form...

Total budget and country: £300 in Glasgow, Scotland

Prefer a standard laptop not a 2 in 1. Best specs for the money. Battery life doesn't matter much because it mainly stays at home plugged in.

    Weight and thinness are inconsequential

Probably after windows because it is familiar but linux would be alright and fun to get used to. Obviously mac is out of the question and I wouldn't like a chrome book so I can use non internet based programs.

A 15" screen would be good.

Not running any intensive software and no gaming

I can't think of any specific features and I don't think you get much of a choice at my price point

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks in advance.

    Original post before formatting below

Sorry for the vague title, but I hate putting the whole question up there.

I'm in the market to get a new laptop through work, but the caveat here is that it has to be a Dell. I'm currently on an old Dell Precision M3800, and the only issues I've ever really had on it is the power adapter and touchpad (the latter of which seems like a physical design issue that's been addressed).

The cord managed to twist itself very slowly (over ~2 years) on the inside where the cable actually connects to the laptop, and eventually no longer would charge the laptop properly. Specs wise, I don't need anything super fancy, but wondered if any of their newer offerings used a more robust style of power adapter?

Even advice or tips on how to prevent issues like the one I had with my current style of cable would also be great! I've been looking at the XPS series specifically, and they seem to use a nearly identical style adapter. It's sort of my biggest hangup here, haha
