On Android R, no app can let you see what's inside "Android" folder anymore

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:39 AM PDT

This new restriction (started on DP1 and continues to DP3) prevents all apps (including system apps such as your built in file manager app) from accessing the entire "Android" folder on the main store volume.

The only app that seems to be allowed to reach the folder is the Play Store and optionally other apps that are allowed to install apps without any confirmation (which have to be system apps, of course).

It doesn't matter how nicely the developer requests, it doesn't matter how the user grants it and even if it looks like the user grants access directly to this folder alone. The app won't be able to do anything with this folder.

Currently, there will be only 2 ways to reach this folder (besides being a system app that can install apps without confirmation) :

    1. Via USB (PC, for example). That's right. You can see the folder on the PC, without any issue, but you can't do it on your own device.
    2. On rooted devices.

This restrictions will ruin various types of apps:

    1. Backup&restore
    2. File manager (supposed to show all files, yet can't do it while your PC can, via USB)
    3. Play Store alternatives, because they can't copy files to the "Android/obb" folder, for example. Only way for them to work is to have a permission to install apps, and for this they need to be system apps, which we all know is quite a hassle and could give too many permissions.

This affects all apps, including old apps that worked before, meaning there isn't even backward compatibility.

Please consider starring any of these, to help against this decision, or at least cover some of those cases :

    Icon Pack Studio 2

    Posted: 05 May 2020 06:38 AM PDT

I'm Vincenzo Colucci, one of the devs of Smart Launcher.

We just released a major update of our Icon Pack Studio, an app that allows anyone to create complete icon packs. This release contains some game-changers news and we would really like to get some feedback from you about them.

1 - You can now use IPS to edit singular app icons.

2 - You can now import installed icon packs. This means you can give a different shape also to not adaptive icon packs, you can add background or textures to existent icon packs or you can adjust the icon colors.

3 - We introduced new tools like gradients and filters and colored shadow.

4 - We introduced a "community" area when you can share your creations and download those created by other users.

You can find a more detailed description of the update here: https://www.iconpackstudio.com/whats-new.html

(Please note, you still need to use a custom launcher to enjoy IPS)

Hello. Is there an app by which I can use multiple Gmail accounts without adding them to my phone?

    Seeking a "Scheduled Alarms" Utility

    Posted: 05 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT

I would like to find an app that allows me to schedule alarms.

An alarm is different from a notification -- a notification pops up a message and may play a sound one time, but an alarm plays a sound repeatedly until you silence it. I can use the native Clock application to schedule alarms up to 24 hours in advance, or up to 7 days in advance if I schedule a repeating weekly alarm and then remove the repeating alarm afterward.

What I would like is to be able to schedule alarms well in advance. An application that maintains a list of scheduled alarms would be fine, or one that tied alarms to certain calendar events. I'm willing to pay a reasonable one-time price for such an app but would prefer it did not contain advertising (if that is an option). A really awesome UI would be nice, of course, but is not a requirement.

Does anyone know of something that will meet my needs?

Non-Xposed-based app for selectively blocking toast popups?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 09:12 AM PDT

    I'm currently running on a OnePlus 7Pro with OOS 10.3.2 (Android-10).

I've been using an Xposed module called "Untoaster Xposed" to selectively block toast popups based upon regex matches of the contained text. This works well, but now I am considering switching to Renovate Ice, which doesn't support Xposed or TaiChi, and I'm wondering if there is any app which offers a non-Xposed-based method for selectively blocking toast popups in this or a similar manner.

I'm willing to write a custom app to do this, if it is the only alternative.

But is this even possible without Xposed?

    Thank you in advance.

A very simple cross platform alternative to bundled notes or keep?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:45 AM PDT

Is there any simple quick short note taking app, which has

    1) Encryption

    2) Cross platform sync

    3) Doesn't necessarily need rich text formatting

    4) Nice UI

Bundled has been the best app for quick notes but it mainly focuses on bundles. I've to tap 2-3 times to quick add notes.

Keep notes is good too, but there's no surity of encryption and privacy. And it's google, they can kill it anytime.

PS - I've tried OneNote, Notion, Joplin, Blacknote, but either they've slow android app which isn't good for quick note taking or they are just web wrapper or their UI is out dated.

    Pushbullet alternative?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 10:30 AM PDT

I've been using pushbullet for years, lately it started acting up; it doesn't auto push messages from my android phones to my windows 10 machine, it does it once in a while, but not every time as before, I reinstalled the app & chrome addon but same issue. I'm looking for an alternative that provides the following:

-Push SMS's, if a phone receives an SMS it pushes it to my windows 10 chrome as a notification message.

-Has a windows chrome browser addon.

-Can push web pages/ pictures from device to the other (Wind 10 & Android) manually.

    Thanks!

    Native v/s React Native

    Posted: 05 May 2020 06:32 AM PDT

    Native v/s React Native

Android and iOS are giving tough competition to each other. Our smartphones whether it is android or iOS is filled with the application that makes our work quite easier. Now these applications can be Native or React Native.

What does native and react native mean?

Native application Development is developing an app that can run on either iOS or android but not on both. So, after that, we came up with the React Native. React Native Development is basically Application Development that can run on both iOS and Android.

Here I am mentioning only these two because, nowadays blackberry and windows phones are out of the league.

Difference Between Native and React Native

The main difference between these two is native is associated with a single software package and that same code cannot work with any other expect the one it is created for whereas react native is not associated to a single software package and the same code can run on both android and iOS so that developers are not required to write separate codes for different software packages .

But this does not mean, react native have only benefits and native have only disadvantages. So let's talks about their Pros and Cons to get a better understanding of both and then decide which is better.

    Native App Development: Pros

    • Native Elements: - All the native element, API's and inbuilt functionalities can be targeted with native application development.
    • Re-usability: - With the use of native, Re-usability of components are more possible while developing more than one application.
    • Robust Languages: - Native Development Languages, such as Kotlin and Swift are very robust languages.

    Native App Development: Cons

    • More Time, Effort and Investments: - If you need to create your application for both the software platforms i.e., Android and iOS, then you need two teams – One for the android App Development and other for the iOS App Development which leads to more time, more effort and also more investment.

    React Native App Development: Pros

    • One Code: - With the use of react native, Developers are required to write a single code base that runs on both android and iOS phones. Thus, it reduces time, effort and investment cost.
    • Hot Reloading: - This is one of the main plus points of react native which was missing with native app development is HOT Reloading. With Hot reloading feature of React Native. developers can see the changes they are making on the screen in real time. It makes easier to deploy the project without rebuilding it every time.
    • Easy for Web Developers: - As major part of react native Development is based on JavaScript. So, it becomes easy for the web developers to move from web development to react native for mobile application development.

    React Native App Development: Cons

    • Native Elements: - With react Native App Development, developers are not able to use the native elements of devices such as cameras or voice recorders, etc.
    • No Support for all native API's: - Another disadvantage of React Native is that it does not support all the native API's but can support some of the popular ones.

So I hope, now you will be able to distinguish between the native app development and React native app development and can decide which one is better among the two.

Dark theme icons for launcher too

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:16 AM PDT

Sadly the support for it doesn't exist (officially) yet, but as dark theme is expected to have a scheduler officially, I think it's time to have it too:

    https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/152802788

    Please consider starring it.

I think it would be nice to have it for all launcher apps. If Google adds official support for it on its launcher, it should be more widespread for other launchers, and developers will also offer it.

looking to do some crazy setup involving phone and pc to save $$$ help/

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:36 PM PDT

So new job on lockdown...require webcam/laptop/headset....

Ive saved by using an old latop opening and cleaning it out... installing more ram and with 2 readyboosts aswell its really snappy now.

Now for the webcam... im interested in using my mobile as its got 1080p back camera.... i dont mind if its wired/wireless as i will be connecting to the back of the laptop when working.

The two problems i have is the phone will also be getting used for incoming and outgoing calls and i dont fancy having to constantly turn the laptop round to accent calls or remove phone etc....

When i accept a phone call.... does the audio still transmit to over the cam ? does who ever im video chatting with then get to hear my conversation im having with whoever i called ?

Perfect set up would be using phone as webcam and mic..... and the ability to accept calls/dial numbers from desktop somehow ? app ? and that when i answer a call the audio disconnects from the cam feed and returns once the call is ended.

    is this possible ?

    thanks.

    Navigation Maps for road trip

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:33 PM PDT

Hi i'm planning to go interstate at the end of the year with some friends. I currently use google maps & waze since i have android auto built into my car.

Is there a way for me to send a link to my friends who'll be using the same navigation app and essentially have the same destination location. On top of this the main feature i wanted is that the location of my friends would also pop up on the centre console map as we drive along on the route?
