    Patch panel mess?!

    Posted: 20 May 2020 02:48 PM PDT

    Patch panel?

This is the patch panel or something like that in my girlfriends condo. I'm looking to fix it so it looks nice. Does this panel work so that I can punch down the wires and have a single Ethernet go into it to power all the punched down cables?

Edit: better photos of the panels.

Just a quick note to say thanks to this community

    Posted: 20 May 2020 01:55 AM PDT

I've just come to the end of a reasonably substantial home networking project that was partly inspired by the need to upgrade the infrastructure in my house now that there's not just me working from home, but also my wife and two kids that are not homeschooling. I needed robust, idiot proof wifi throughout the house and a network that would stay up reliably so that I don't end up troubleshooting when I needed to be working.

Thanks to you guys, I've managed to achieve everything I needed to. There's whole house wifi, including in the garden. The kids have robust access in their rooms, which has been a life saver because they have some place to go to be alone, and the router doesn't fall over every day or so. Thanks to advice I got here, I've solved a number of problems by doing this that I'd previous just been living with, like only having 100 Mb/s in the garden office, the IoT thermostat constantly forgetting how to connect to the heating system, smart phone control of the media centre only working half the time and a ton of other little things.

    Here's what I did

Replaced the hub I got from my ISP with a Netgear DM200 modem, a ubiquity edge router, and a PoE switch

I already had a Ubiquity Unifi AP in my office so I put one in the living room and a third in the bedroom at the opposite corner of the house. Specifically, on the other side of the thick stone wall that runs through our house and blocks all wifi signal. I actually experimented to find the best placement using an extension cable and ethernet over mains to find the best location for the second AP. Thanks to PoE eliminating the need for a power source and hiding cable in the wall, the AP is tamper resistant.

Ran new, better cable to the office, and wired it correctly to finally achieved that sweet gigabit ethernet. This was in addition to new runs I put in for that AP in the youngest kid's room and between the router and the entertainment center in the living room.

Put the entertainment center on wired connections and static IP addresses. It's amazing how much better all that stuff works now.

It was hard work, occasionally frustrating work to get everything right, especially having to get cables through 3ft thick stone walls, but life is so much easier now that everything is reliable.

    Here's a tricky one

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:55 PM PDT

I've been doing some latency troubleshooting on my home network, and found a particularly strange problem. I have CenturyLink bonded DSL coming into a C3000Z modem set to bridge mode, and a FortiGate 60D firewall. I have 4 machines connected, and only 2 exhibit the symptoms. I'm trying to find the correlation.

The issue is as follows: I run a bandwidth test with CenturyLink. It performs a download test and an upload test. While running this test, I have a ping loop going to Google to observe any lag spikes and packet loss. Unsurprisingly, when the upload test is running, the ping loop latency spikes (from 19-21ms to ~150). When the upload test finishes, the latency (as expected) returns to normal..... on two of the machines. On the other two, exactly 60 seconds passes by before latency returns to normal.

    Machines with the problem:
    A desktop computer, Windows 10 1909, wired 1GbE Ethernet
    A desktop computer, Windows 10 1903, Wi-Fi

    Machines without the problem:
    A laptop computer, Windows 10 1909, wired 1GbE Ethernet
A Dell server, Windows Server 2008 R2, wired 1GbE Ethernet

I am trying to determine what this 60 second delay return to normal is, and how I might eliminate it. Any takers?

    Home Network Revamp

    Posted: 20 May 2020 02:44 PM PDT

    Hello!

Bit of an open ended question this one but I'm struggling to work out where to begin.

I'm a BT Broadband user on 20/2 DSL service. I'm currently using their Smart Hub 2 router/modem. I've the usual mixture of wireless devices (iPads, Sonos speakers, Amazon Echoes etc) plus a bunch of wired devices (IoT hubs, desktop, NAS, Raspberry PIs etc) via two 8 port TP-Link switches hanging off the BT router.

In short the limitations of the BT hub are annoying the hell out of me. The BT router locks the configuration to their DNS servers (so no PI-Hole for example), the whole thing grinds to a halt whenever anyone tries to upload anything of any size, plus the management is pretty rubbish in that I can't really tell what is doing what on the network.

I think it's time for an upgrade. I'm after some advice as to what I could start looking at to improve things (and not have everyone in the house shout at me whenever I upload any photos to Adobe CC!). My aims are:

    1. Better control of my network. See what device is doing what - so for example identify devices consuming all the bandwidth or restrict access to the kids' iPads after 10pm.
    2. Improve wireless coverage including a guest wireless network. I'm not that bothered about raw speed but it would be nice to cover off a few dead spots.
    3. Portability so when I eventually get tired of waiting for Openreach to upgrade my Exchange and move to Virgin I can take things with me.
    4. Ideally, VLAN tagging so I can segregate some stuff off (home lab for example).

I'm guessing I'm tied to the DSL modem in the BT hub but I'm hoping I can just turn everything else off and plug it in to whatever I replace it with?

I keep seeing lots of mesh services (like Amazon Eero) but I'm assuming I'll need something to act as a modem. Ubiquiti and Mikrotik look interesting but tbh I'm having trouble unpicking their products.

My background is IT - just not networking. I'm pretty confident to get stuck in to stuff, I just don't know where to start?

Any and all advice is gratefully received.

    Z.

Advice on a new Mesh WiFi System

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:09 PM PDT

    First time posting here

A relative of mine asked if I can do a new WiFi system install for their new home [About 4-5,000 Sqft with some open designs]. They left me in charge with picking out the WiFi System with a $350 budget. I currently own a Netgear Orbi RBK50 at my house for a few years now and it has been good.

I could just pick out another RBK50 for their home, but with others reporting that the Orbi has been either good with the updates or a nightmare with the updates concerns me. I haven't had any issues with the Orbi updates since I got mine so far, but I may be one of the lucky few.

So far, I have the Linksys Velop as an alternative in mind, but that has mixed reviews to the point I could not determine whether it is good or not. Is there any other Mesh WiFi Systems you guys would recommend? I'm thinking one with Tri-band.

Realtek PCIe gbE network interface mysteriously capped at 200mbps

    Posted: 20 May 2020 03:19 PM PDT

    Hi there,

So I've had this issue for a while now, I have 500mbps down but for some reason my PC only manages to reach 200mbps. the exact same cable on my laptop reaches 500mbps. I've tried this via multiple speed test programs, including google's own, speedtest.net, my ISP's speedtest and also speedof.me. This issue only appears on windows 10 by the way, I ran a live fedora on the PC with the issue and I instantly was hitting 500mbps down as expected of my internet speed.

    • NIC: Realtek 8168 series under one of the device tabs, although its called Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller in the adapter menu in control panel.

    • Already spent a bunch of time uninstalling drivers, from device manager and from the realtek uninstall with no luck.

    • installed first the gigabyte version of the driver, didn't work, tried the realtek one, didn't make a difference.

    • Already messed around with all of the device configuration settings to be found under the ethernet adapter, turned on/off ipv6, vlan/priority, auto negotiation/1gbps full duplex, etc, you name it.

    • Also, windows loves to somehow reinstall the damn driver even after turning off the auto-install driver thing from advanced computer settings.

    • ended up running a live fedora off of an external hard drive and voila, I'm getting the expected 500mbps down as expected.

Anyone have any clue what in Ben's name is going on? Is there some sort of way to properly nuke the hell out of the drivers? absolutely reset anything related to the network interface in windows? Thank you very much.

    Advice on a setup?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 02:58 PM PDT

I would like to ask if my wanted setup would make sense

    The diagram is here:

    https://imagebin.ca/v/5NDKCt83YNCO

I would like to use my DSL in transparency (bridge) mode to only handle PPPoE and have the rest of the services handled by the pfSense fw/router

DHCP for the Google WiFi (in bridge mode) and it's devices, direct lan to my computer (potentially for wake on lan, ssh)

One thing I am still wrapping my head around is how to set up the communication between the pfSense and the DSL modem - would I set up static IP on the LAN of DSL to which I would point the WAN of the pfSense? How would such a setup look in practice?

Thank you for any advice, I am not very experienced in this field

    Router in bridge mode

    Posted: 20 May 2020 04:15 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I want to use another router besides my ISP's router at home. So I put my router in bridge mode and connected to the second one. To this point it's all ok and working and I can connect to the internet via the second router, however when I check my IP I am being assigned my public IP instead of a private one and can't open the second router's web mgmt console because is set to 192.168.1.254 by default. If I set a static IP address, default gateway and dns servers, the connection stops working.

What am I doing wrong or what can I do to solve this?

    Regards!

In a predicament regarding Internet, can I convert wireless internet to wired internet?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:26 PM PDT

In August I will be moving to a new apartment complex. Unfortunately, I have only now realized that the apartment complex does not come with wired internet, but only wireless. This is a big problem for me as I play competitive Call of Duty and rely heavily on faster internet speeds and ping. Each apartment room will be equipped with a "smart router" that unfortunately, does not have any lan ports. My question now is "How can I convert my wireless internet to wired internet?" I know Internet over Power Adaptors exsist such as TP Link, but I don't have access to the main internet router in the apartment complex, so this would not be possible. Could I possibly bring a router from home that has an Ethernet port and somehow try to set it up in my apartment? This is a student style apartment complex, so I don't have the ability to get a lan port installed.

Rental router/modem works, night hawk slow

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:58 PM PDT

The rental modem/router combo works with 1GB speed; it's amazing and tested with ookla (750mbps, and the conversion from bits to bytes probably too). I wanted to switch to a new modem and a new router so that I can actually configure devices internally and do static routes and stuff.

I switch this old modem/router out for a nighthawk cm1100 (capable of gb speeds, compatible with isp, and docsis3.1 enabled) and a NightHawk R7000 (stock, not updated but I don't want to just yet so that I can eventually install dd wrt) and everything is setup and works.

Ookla is now saying 200mbps and that's with cat5e ran everywhere, same cables and gig capable laptop.

I have seen a Netgear forum say that there needs to be all of the modem channels filled for the speed to fully populate. Is this true? And does my isp control/able to fix that?

Are there any cool mods to the cm1100 to try?

And what is the difference between going with dd wrt Kong vs brainslayer? (Perhaps questions for other post later)

    Slow speeds. Comcast blames modem

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:54 PM PDT

So I have Blast pro I think. 600 mbps at $70 a month. Since the pandemic started I have noticed I was getting slower speeds. I called mid April and they said yea it looks like night not be getting enough power. They would send someone out to check stuff and if they couldn't resolve they would contact us. Never heard anything. Lately the internet speed and been effecting us more and more. Hard line devices are getting less than 100 mbps and wifi less than that. 5g wifi i can get about 250 mbps. I reset modem and restored defaults on my Arris Sb6190 then plugged my laptop directly in without a router and still less than 100 mbps. Contacted Comcast and brought up that I called on this before and wanted to know the results of my last call but like talking to a wall sometimes. They said they couldn't find anything and told me to call the manufacturer of the modem. So I called Arris and they said they couldn't do anything over the phone since I am out of warranty. I can email or live chat. I sent an email since live chat was closed but I am finding it hard to believe that it is my modem. Comcast is just trying to blame someone else.

I checked my power and I have like 30 channels at like 2.5 power. Is that possibly something wrong?

Help me select a mesh system for my house - please and thank you

    Posted: 20 May 2020 04:55 PM PDT

TL;DR Working from home full time has revealed some weaknesses in my wifi setup, and it's getting worse. I need some help selecting a mesh wifi system to solve my dead spots and speed limitations.

    What I have now:

    • Edgerouter X
    • Unifi AC Lite
    • Unifi AC LR
    • ~4,000sqft house
    • 500/50 internet
    • ~25 devices across three floors

    The Problem:

I currently have the modem, edgerouter and the AC lite in the basement, hardwired. The AC LR is upstairs using the Lite as a wireless uplink. My house is not wired for ethernet, so I've tried a variety of configurations to get the AC LR better positioned, but they always leave dead spots, shoddy performance, or are rube goldberg machine of connectivity. I'm hoping switching to a mesh system is better suited for my situation.

Budget: $200-250. I can't justify much more than that. At some point it's cheaper to pay someone to drop lines in the house, right? Or buy MoCa adapters?

    What I'm looking at:

I think a three piece setup is probably best for my house. I'd also like to keep the edgerouter as it's been really solid and has dynamic dns, smart qos, and other features I use. I expect to use the mesh just as APs.

Netgear Nighthawk Mesh Wifi 6 System ($199, Costco) - Has WiFi 6 (though I currently have no compatible devices) reviews are more sparse and harder to compare to other systems. Just released this year.

Linksys Velop Tri-band Mesh - ($229, Woot) Tri-band is nice, it's well reviewed but it's a bit dated. Not enthusiastic about buying a 3 year old system.

Eero and Orbi are also contenders, but both seem to have mixed reviews, especially around speed.

    What should I get?

Need a free way to get an ipv4 port for friends to connect to game server with

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:40 PM PDT

I live in Japan. My ISP provides ipv6, ipv4 is encapsulated in ipv6 at the router and sent to the isp where it is de-encapsulated and sent on. This means I can't port forward ipv4. My ips provides an optional fixed ipv4, but it costs like $20/month... I have friends in the US that do not have ipv6. Some have isp's that don't provide ipv6, some have routers that are too old to support it, most of them are not tech savvy enough to want to mess with it regardless.

Are there any services that would allow me to forward a port on an ipv4 address to my ipv6 address for free?

FIOS TV, Internet, and UDM Help

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:14 PM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I am trying to hook up my UDM to service my FIOS gigabit internet and STB using MOCA as I don't have ethernet through the house. I have the ONT and Verizon provided wifi router in my basement where the fiber comes in. I need to connect via Coax into my living room on the second floor where the STB and other home automation/AV gear is housed. There is a coax drop in the basement which is currently hooked up the Verizon router creating a MOCA network.

Ideally, I can completely remove the Verizon router and hook up the ONT directly to the UDM. From the UDM, ethernet and existing Coax drop fed into a MOCA adapter to drive gigabit speeds to the switch in the living room. All while maintaining full functionality of the STB.

I created a network diagram here and am looking for guidance.

    Mesh Network Question

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:14 PM PDT

Hey folks, would appreciate your help on this.

I am currently using 2 Apple Air Port Extreme wireless routers to provide internet to the home. I have them "paired" somehow...though honestly not sure how it works...I think it is an "extender" and not a true mesh network. But the key benefit for me is I have a wired connection at each of the 2 stations, so I can "plug in" to each station. I need this because my stereo needs a wired connection to connect to the network.

Anyways, the system has worked pretty well for the last 12 years or so...but one of the units just died...so it is time to upgrade.

Looking for recommendation for a mesh network, with the ability to "plug in" to the satellite stations.

Performance is a larger concern for me than price.

And, if possible, would love to have one with the satellite just plugs into an outlet (so it sits at the outlet like this https://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Velop-Tri-band-Whole-3-Pack/dp/B07B461NQW )

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Edgerouter X with Unifi AP Lite... can I do this?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:52 PM PDT

I've read a lot of good things about the Edgerouter X paired with one or two Unifi AP Lites. My two questions I have are...

    • I've read that setting up the Edgerouter isn't quite as simple as setting up something from Netgear, D-Link, etc. Is this something I'll be able to figure out or is it pretty technical?

    • For the access points, I have the whole home wired with coax with MoCA adapters in just about every room. I was thinking maybe two APs, one each near the ends of the house. I have read about POE but I don't quite get it. Is that something that would work over MoCA adapters?

EDIT: At each place I'd like to put an AP, there would be MoCA adapters, and also an ethernet switch. For instance, in my bedroom, I would have an Ethernet switch there for my TV, PS4, etc. I don't know if having a switch there makes a difference for PoE.

New router WiFi and computer aren’t mixing well

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:23 PM PDT

I came home from college not too long ago to see that my brother purchased a new router, and Netgear Nighthawk R7000. When I went to connect to the WiFi, it would only connect, but not let me connect to the internet, while it worked just fine on my phone. I access the router settings and am somehow able to set it up to be able to use the internet on my computer, but after a while, between half an hour to maybe two hours, the internet somewhat stops working. I say somewhat because for a while, if I'm playing a game online or am on discord, those apps will still work as if nothing happened until it starts looking for another server. Eventually, it will disconnect from those. The connection doesn't give off any indication that I can't access the internet, so I don't know how to search what I need to do to fix it. Anyone know how I can fix this?

For a second access point is there any reason to get a access point vs a router with AP mode?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I'm looking to set up a second wifi access point, and I'm looking at two 2.4Ghz/5Ghz "access points" for the same cost and similar specs, but one is a router with AP mode and the other is just an access point with no router

Is there any reason to just get an access point with no router? I mean, may as well have the ability to use it as a router if the need arises, or is there some reason to forego the router with an AP mode and just get an dedicated access point device?

Also, if the ethernet path the access point connects to only gets 200mbps, is there any reason to look at differences in speed above that? Could I save money by just getting a cheap access point that only has a 2.4Ghz radio at 300mbps and not see any differences in speed?

Transitioning from Comcast rental router to something new

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:06 PM PDT

So our "Xfinity Wireless Gateway" ( Cisco DPC3941T ) has been pretty bad lately, like dropping connections and having to be restarted every couple of days. We live in a ~2250 square foot house with 2 levels (3 counting one bedroom). It's kind of "L" shaped, with the modem placed in the corner area. The connection in the ends of the L shape is really inconsistent as well, which is pretty frustrating.

I've been looking into buying a new modem and router, so I wanted to get some advice. I have the following in mind:

I know both have gotten good reviews, but I want to check and see if there's any glaring issues with this purchase. We have the 300mbps plan with Xfinity, so I also don't want to buy something overkill that's way more expensive than it needs to be. If you have any suggestions or other advice, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Switching from ISP Modem/Router to Personal Equipment

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:48 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm looking for some thoughts and opinions on how I should go about this and what things to get. I'm currently running an ARRIS TG3452 from Mediacom with 500mbps for download. For the modem, I was gonna go with an ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 unless they really have a high chance of overheating. I just can't find a Netgear CM1000 for around the same price as the ARRIS so if there's not really a big reason to choose one over the other (During my research to me it only seemed like ARRIS had a problem of some times overheating and had two ports on it for future-proofing which doesn't really matter to me) I'll end up getting the ARRIS. I did check Mediacom's site and they do support both these Modems.

Now the big part I'm really hesitant on pulling the trigger on is the router. I work in IT as an intern and my job has Unifi stuff for our networking and everyone praises them at work. So I was thinking of getting an Unifi Security Gateway, an Unifi Switch 8 60W, and an Unifi AP AC Lite. I have about 1100 sq. ft. a house that's a split level with 2 floors. I was gonna but the AP in the middle of the house on the bottom floor since my Internet comes into the basement. I'm wondering if this is a good idea to go with or if I should go with a different setup. Most of my family's electronics run through WiFi and mostly on 2.4GHz. My stuff is really the only things that are connected via Ethernet or 5GHz.

If you need any more info let me know and I'll reply or add it to the post in an edit.
