This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Turning on my daughters PC with no RAM!

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:22 AM PDT

So I've been building PC for the whole family and was excited as I've been slowly buying all the parts for my daughters PC. Yesterday I bought a power supply and wanted to see if I can get her not completed PC bootet into the bios since I have no hard drive yet. I have an MSI gpu 1gb I threw in it, plugged everything in and boom. Not booting. Me wondering WTH but since it was too late to start messing with it, I went to bed. 3am, I wake up to a WTH moment. I. DONT. HAVE. RAMMMMM!!!. Then went right to bed feeling both better and like a dumb ass.

    First time BUDGET gaming build

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:15 PM PDT

My son and I are going to try our hand at building a PC, on a super tight budget. We mainly play mmos like Wow and ESO.

The primary goal is to be able to play smoothly without lag, freezes, etc. What I've put together exceeds our various games' system requirements, but I'm sure the build needs changes or improvement.

What I've come up with should hit about $600, which is the absolute ceiling. (less is better)

    The build - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k2wgsk

Note, the case I'm looking at is not available to choose there. It's the Cooler Master Elite 110. https://www.newegg.com/midnight-black-cooler-master-elite-110-mini-itx-tower/p/N82E16811119299 It's not that I'm set on that case, it just seemed to provide what I need.

    Thanks for any tips!

A couple of thoughts on the parts themselves:

CPU: I was between i7 and i9 for a while since this is predominantly a gaming PC but eventually decided on i9 for the hyperthreading as what I've researched online seems to help with streaming a lot.

CPU Cooler: Decided to go with an air cooler simply because from what I've found online is that a lot of the latest air coolers will perform at the same temps & noise decibels as most AIOs without the risk of leaks. While the aesthetic of an AIO is very nice and keeps temps low while being quiet at times, the pumps will eventually begin to degrade after some years and risk possible leaks in the system. This makes me very anxious having to worry about that. Figured air was the better option for me in the long run. I'm open to opinions though, obivously. If I had a better choice of fan colors, I'd have gone with the Noctua NH-D15 as it seems to be the king of air coolers but went with cooler master as a second option.

Motherboard: I was between the Asus ROG Strix Z390-E and the Gigabyte Z390 Aourus Master. Still not sure which one will suit my needs better but I heard of the Strix having less than ideal VRM phases? Not completely sure how that all works so I'm leaning towards the Aourus.

Memory: Was going to do 16gb 2x8gb but decided on 32gb 4x8gb because greed.

Storage: Initially I was going to do a 3TB HDD for dump storage alongside a 1 TB M.2 SSD for the OS and Games, but I think I'd prefer running everything on a single 2TB M.2 for blazing speeds all around. I noticed the Aourus Master MB allows for RAID of m.2 ssd's so I may do that in the future for more storage if needed. I'm also not exactly sure how it works with the limitation of lanes when using m.2 storage. From what I understand, I won't have any trouble since I won't be using SATA for anything I believe? Will using the m.2 affect the PCIE lane my graphics card is in?

Video Card: Was always going to run a 2080ti but I wasn't sure which one would be best. I was once again deciding between Asus w/ the ROG Strix 2080ti and Gigabyte w/ the Aourus Extreme 2080ti. I ended up selecting the Aourus just because it would match the brand of the motherboard and also the core clock (1770 MHz) is the highest on any 2080ti I've found online. Plus the RGB is nicer on the Aourus.

Case: Loved the look of it, has just a little more space for everything than your average mid towers and seems to be the latest from NZXT cases.

Power supply: Honeslty not sure which is the best PSU required for this kind of build but this one seems great and is fully modular which I suppose would be a better option for less cable clutter and better airflow in the case.

So that's it. The goal was to be able to basically do whatever I want and game at 4K/Max settings for years to come with minimal tweaks in parts as time goes by. I'd like your thoughts or concerns if this is worthwhile for my budget (around $3k), if any of these parts don't make sense together or if there are newer and better parts I should be considering or even waiting for release dates on. I won't be pulling the trigger on the purchase for a little while so I'm trying to research as much as I can before deciding on it.

I'm looking to build an mATX machine in the future for, VR and home theater use. I'd be looking for a case that is easy to build in that could also lay fit in an entertainment center. I know there are home theater cases, but I'd rather avoid those to have an easier build.

Need help, mabye problem with CPU and memory!

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:54 PM PDT

    Hello!

I just finished building my first pc but on the motherboard when i booted the pc up two red lights appeared. On closer investigation the red lights implied that there was something wrong with the CPU and the memory and the BIOS would not boot on the monitor, so something is wrong.

I took the cooler off the cpu to chech the pins, and to chech that the ram sticks are in order. AND EVERYTHING WAS OKEY, well form my point of view. So I took all the parts back in and turned the pc back on just too see that the same lights was on.

I dont now what the problem is please help me!

Here is the list of the parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kCvpdX?fbclid=IwAR3T_bVClPx22l--UOUOm8ztlQ80HsCJQGjsOG1aHWXJq6u6AUve2Ip-JBY

    Network Card Issues

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:50 PM PDT

I'll preface this by saying while it's not wholly built by me, I've had the motherboard (and therefore the cpu) just replaced.

The network card I foolishly bought when I first got the desktop was a TP-Link Archer T9E AC1900. Decently fast, but it has driver comparability issues with windows 10 (as apparently all network cards with this particular Broadcom chip do), I later learned. I solved those on the old motherboard (an MSI Bazooka 250m) after some googling. Now, however, I'm having similar but worse issues. Near as I can tell, I've jumped through the exact same driver hoops (which I wouldn't think I would have needed to), and it is still not working, in the exact same way as before I tried the fixes (a different way from the not working on the old motherboard). It reads drivers and the card as being there, but it instead refuses to see any wifi network it should clearly be in range of (around 6). My motherboard now is an MSI B450 A-Pro, if relevant. Could it be the antennae for the card got broken? Or is it something else?

Sorry for any formatting or typos, I'm on mobile and really hope I can get some help.

First time building a PC - Everything worked on first try !

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:50 AM PDT

    Hello all,

Just built my first PC yesterday and everything went so smooth I couldn't believe it ! I grew up around PC parts since my father is himself a PC builder but I never actually built one myself.

After building the whole thing I got a little scared when nothing appeared on my screen > I replaced my DP cable by an HDMI and it worked. My DP cable only did the job when I installed the nvidia drivers.

Only thing is I think I could've done a better job at cable management. Also power supply on my GPU is kinda weird since I didnt have the right cable (here Im using a PCI-e cable instead of a "VGA" cable apparently) but it works.

    Here are a few pictures : https://imgur.com/a/WWrCNMT

I advice everyone building a PC to check out this video > "How To Build a Gaming PC in 2019! Part 2 - THE BUILD" by Paul's hardware. It helped me so much since he's building approximately the same system as I did.

    PC specs : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wXH23t

Fortnite is running easily at 240fps and I got a free copy of COD Modern Warfare with the GPU. Can't wait to test ray tracing :)

Good luck for your builds !

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The other day I noticed my system fans weren't working. They were working up until that point, for a year and a few months. The Noctua Fans came with low noise adapters, and I've installed them from the start so I don't think that's the problem.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I was googling around and saw this post But I installed and have been using the low noise adapters for a while so that might not be the problem. I checked the BIOS, and it says they aren't spinning. But the ones on the CPU are. I have tried setting the fan speed to max, but once windows boots they stop spinning (they spin a bit during load up)

Post relevant photos of build/parts here. Photo of computer on. The fans on the graphics card are system fans.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Please provide technical solutions before I have to actually bring the computer from underneath the desk. It's super heavy :(

    NVME?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:28 PM PDT

Would it be alright if I only had a NVME as my storage? Would I run into any tedious problems or such? I can't find anything solid online about this, which probably means this is a nonissue, so I'm just making sure.

How is my build, before I start assembling

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:26 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Almost have all the parts (MOBO pending) but was just wondering if there was anything you all would change before I commit.

I am upgrading from this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XjzC3C

    To this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ycGp9G

Ignore the monitor, that will be a future upgrade, and I have a gysnc 1080p monitor I can't remember the name of right now.

I mostly do 4K video editing as well as gaming at 1080p (though with this I plan to upgrade my monitor at some point)

    How can i use a 6 + 2 connector for my GTX 970 that takes 6 + 8?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 03:54 PM PDT

Hey guys, so i recently changed my graphics card to a gtx 970 that takes a 8 and 6 pin connector, the connector coming from my PSU only has a 6 + 2, is there anything i can do about this or would i have to get a new PSU?

Also, when i plugged my connector into the 8 pin and booted up my PC, it had red lines across the screen, does this mean the GPU is damaged or it just isnt getting enough power?

    Here are the PC's specs;

    Motherboard - Asus Z97-A ATX

    CPU - i5 4690k @3.50Ghz

CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

First time builder - looking for tips

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:41 PM PDT

Long time gamer, finally branching to the PC side of things. Never built a PC before, so I could use any advice I can get! This is my current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8BxHx6 - I'm also planning on doing dual monitors so if there's any quirks anyone knows about on that subject I'm all ears. Hopefully I'll be able to set up my PS4 on my 1 shared gaming monitor with my PC, and then have an extra monitor for less straining stuff, like Discord/Netflix.

Also, this is my first ever Reddit post, so forgive me if I did something wrong.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask about GPU upgrades

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:40 PM PDT

Hey, fellas. I'm looking to pop a 1660ti in my rig, I just want to check all the prerequisites. I believe I have to check my PSU, MOBO connectors, and CPU.

Currently I have a 750ti (older than sliced bread), I have a i7-4790k running at 4GHz. 16GB RAM, and I know the 750ti fits jn a PCIe 3 slot, and so does the 1660ti.

So my question is, is my CPU sufficient, and how do I know if my PSU is? I plan on opening up the old box tomorrow and having a peek/clean. What do I look out for, fellas?

Should I update bios and Drivers before installing OS?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:40 PM PDT

After 15 years with Apple, I just put together my first ever pc, haven't turned it on Yet.

Mobo: Gigabyte z390 designare. CPU: Intel i9 9900k. GPU: MSI rtx 2070 super gaming x trio.

I was wondering if I should update the bios right away, even before installing OS? Should I also update all the mobo drivers, or maybe just a couple of them like the chipset and Lan drivers? I'm so used to just updating everything on a mac the second its available.

Also does the bronze rating on the power supply matter? gonna be using this for 1080p 144hz gaming maybe 1440p later in the future when i get a 1440p monitor, I have access to microcenter and i would like not to exceed $1200
