Laptop recommendation for coding and a little gaming below 2,000 dollars

    Hi,

Because I need to do some data science and AI stuff so there will be times when the laptop needs to be processing data for 24 straight hours. I would prefer a big screen but it's not a requirement. I play some games like valorant and cs go.

    thank you for your recommendations!

    Which one to get?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 01:57 PM PDT

I'll be studying computer science soon and I'm looking for a laptop to buy right now.

I have found 2 which seem good to me but I'm not really sure whether the better CPU is worth the extra 140 euros.

What is the best Ethernet adapter for a us 3.2 gen 2 port?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:36 PM PDT

I just bought a laptop that had both usb type-A and type-C ports but no Ethernet. If I want the best possible adapter that will not be limiting the capability of these ports so I can get the best Ethernet connection possible. Any recommendations?

    Comment/suggestion/advice on this laptop

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 09:38 PM PDT

    Looking at this: https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-000D-0KYA9

Thought on it? bellow my "requirements"

    • budget under $700, not to have not a need.
    • Open box/used fine.
    • form factor not important, and if it wont last years why bother.
    • Weight/thinness not important
    • Pref 17"
    • Lighter gaming (8 year old PC's handle most games I play fine and I know desktop ryzen APU's handles the games fine too)
    • no need for touchscreen

Ideally 17inch, Ryzen cpu with solid apu no need for actual GPU, Ram important as 8GB seams bear min for web browsing so wanted 16G+. Will be Linux (or linux/win7) i'' also likely run VM's from time to time, some coding or other geek things.

Oh, ethernet, wifi, usb, nice to have is sd card reader and maybe even USB drive. Another nicety would be can be upgraded to more than 16G ram.

    Thanks in advance

Question about the "gaming ability" of the laptop I will likely be buying for school next year

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 09:33 PM PDT

    Hello r/SuggestALaptop,

I will be going into a computer engineering major next year, and as a part of that, have been recommended by the school to get a laptop. The laptop in question will either be a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 or a Dell Precision 5560. (As I will be ordering from my school, key parts can be found below just in case they could be customized differently than the school's chosen build.)

While the primary function of the laptop will be for my school work, I game fairly regularly and wanted to try and find out if either of these laptops could run more modern titles such as Valorant, Sea of thieves, etc. (hopefully near 60fps). And, if both of these laptops can run games, which might perform better.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide information on this! If I have left out key information that would better help this community's suggestions, lmk and I will add it in as soon as I can.

    Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4:

    - Intel core i7-11800H 8 cores up to 4.6 Ghz

    - 16GB 3200 MHz DDR4

    - nVidia Quadro T1200 Max-Q 4GB GDDR6 video card

    - 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD

    Dell Precision 5560

    - Intel Core i7 Quad core

    - 16GB 4800 MHz DDR5

    - nVidia Quadro T1000 4GB

    - 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD

16:10 laptop with good color accuracy for photo editing and general productivity. $1000ish, USA

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 03:04 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I would really like to keep it under $1000 USD if possible, but would consider stretching to $1100-$1150 for a great deal or if it gains me something significant.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Prefer new, but would consider refurbs done by the original manufacturer (i.e. no questionable eBay "refurbished by seller" stuff)

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I am okay with either laptop or 2-in-1. Would like something with good build quality and a long battery life. Those are more important than ultimate low weight.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderately important but not most important. Something like a Acer Swift/Macbook Pro are fine. Doesn't have to be LG Gram light or OLED screen thin.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 to 15 inches. Aspect ratio taller than 16:9 is most important.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Productivity (Google Docs) and photo editing (Lightroom, Photoshop) will be the top priorities.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Possibly some minor gaming (no AAA), and it's not really a priority.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would like: backlit keyboard with good tactility, decent webcam, USB-C charging.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Overall, besides screen aspect ratio and color quality (100% SRGB or better), the most important factor to me is bang for the buck. That is, I would happily buy a 2021 model/CPU if it gets me equal/better performance than a 2022 model/CPU at the same price.

    -fill here, remove dashes-

$2500 Budget; Looking for something to travel with for legal work and maybe some light gaming

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 07:19 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $2500 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Leaning towards no but no real preference
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance > Build Quality > Battery Life (but don't want a battery that'll burn our quickly) > Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Does not matter at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14 inch screen preferred, or anything larger but any smaller than 14" would not be ideal
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • At any point in time maybe 1 light game with MS Word, ~10 tabs on a browser, Zoom, or MS Teams
      • Non AAA Games (think Minecraft with mods); Maybe AAA if there's a good laptop that could run them at 60fps.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't plan on gaming much but want to have the option available on my commute home.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No real preference for the above^. I am also not set on spending the entire $2500 at all. If I need to, then sure but I'm open to spending less. I currently have a refurbished 2015 macbook air that's lasted me some while but is now giving me problems and I cannot optimize it as I used to. I really like the M1 Pro but meh, open to options.

I'm also open to spenidng some of the budget on accessories (mouse, external mechanical keyboard, etc.)

Laptop for coding and light gaming

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600-900 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life not really relevant. It will usually be plugged in. Build I'd like it to be not super cheap but not really important. 2 in 1 is cool but not needed.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Super important. I'd like as light and as thin as possible.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13-14in. 15 is okay but pushing it.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming: Valorant, LoL, RuneScape. Probably about it.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As above. Any settings, with focus on 60+ FPS. 144 would be best if possible.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Really don't want a laptop that screams "I'm a gamer." Please no RGB keys or Red backlit keys or anything. I want something smooth and basic looking. Also want 16GB ram.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking at the Lenovo Yoga 6 13" and the Lenovo Flex 5. Both seem like solid options but I wanted to ask here before buying anything. Will be buying next week needed before July 1st so please give me recommendations. Thanks.

    Need a Replacement Laptop

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 06:56 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1,000 but if lower that's always nice.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery Life is always nice. If it can take a beating even nicer.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not really important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
VMWare, PowerShell scripting, need some decent GPU if I want to use applications like John the Ripper, Hydra, etc. without it chugging.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
If it happens to have some added security biometric feature, always nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • I plan on waiting for Black Friday / Cyber Monday, or for any relevant sales.
      • I don't really need fancy bells and whistles. Something practical is really all I need. If the laptop suggested can handle multiple programs, web browser tabs, scripts running, maybe a few VMs, and other items open at once without freezing / chugging, I'm happy. Might be a lot for a laptop to handle though even when hitting the max on the budget.

    Thanks in advance.

looking for a lightweight laptop that can run valorant

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 06:48 PM PDT

Hello, I'm looking for a laptop that isn't too heavy (I'm going to college in the fall and would like to be able to easily bring it to class and the library etc.) and can run Valorant smoothly (preferably over 100 fps). I know absolutely nothing about laptops so any advice is greatly appreciated! I'd prefer if it wasn't a gaming laptop, just because they tend to be bulky and flashy and I'm looking for something normal-looking.

I'm willing to pay up to $1400. I would like the keyboard to be well-functioning because I'll be typing a lot. I would prefer if the screen is 15 inches or less. A laptop with a built-in webcam would be ideal! I'm buying in the USA.

(I was looking at the Razer Book 13, does anyone know if it would fulfill the requirements I'm looking for?)

Accidentally bought an Envy x360 with Sure View display

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 06:43 PM PDT

Hi everyone - I just purchased the Envy x360 that should be delivered this week, however unfortunately I ordered the 1000 nits version without knowing it has the Sure View privacy display.

A lot of videos and reviews are saying it's horrible and unusable - is it that big of a deal breaker?

I mostly use the laptop for YouTube / Netflix in bed. Would really appreciate your honest feedback!!

[CAN] [$500 - $1000] [~15"] CHEAP coding class-book to survive a couple of years. Already have a PC.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 02:42 PM PDT

So I'm required to get a laptop. I have a decent desktop and backup PC / sever so looking for the cheapest decently running laptop to last 3+ years.

College just released their specs of:

    • NO MAC.
    • Intel Core i5 / Evo i5 8th+ gen or AMD Ryzen 5
    • 16 GB RAM
    • Wifi 6, RJ-45 gigabit ethernet or USB gigabit adapter
    • 3+ USB 3.1 ports
    • 13+ inches

    And onto the form;

    • Total budget

      $1000 CAD, preferably $600 area

    Buying in Manitoba, Canada

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes.

Preference to refurb from companies with 30 day returns.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Build quality is a must. I walk to school. It gets to -40c here. Needs to survive that (off) a few days a week. Yes I'll show up early so it can warm up but I know it's a stresser.

    • Battery and performance are equal, I'll get a plug but I have about 3 hours of classes before a break so prefer a 5-6 hour charge while taking notes.

    • No real preference for style of laptop, but less parts to break is nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Thinness is not important.

Weight is not a huge amount, but I'd like it to be a comfortable weight for a backpack.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13+ required.

    15 area is preference.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • CompSci degree, will be running some VMs for classes but unlikely to do any major image editing.

    • May take one game dev elective, but will likely do most work at home

    • Once or twice a year might edit some of the presentation videos on it, but will likely use PC instead.

    • No dual boot needed

    • Possibly some older games (~5 years) on break or vacation

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Low likelihood of gaming on this laptop, maybe a hour a week max.

May have Minecraft or Darkest Dungeon type games on my spare. Preferably 45-60 FPS on medium-low settings while plugged in. Willing to use Optifine or work arounds / mods to run things.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Good keyboard is a want.

Non-chicklet / more raised keyboard would be nice but not necessary. Same with num keys.

Ethernet port on it is a huge preference.

Preference to brands that publish their tear down guides.

    School reqs;

    • Intel Core i5 / Evo i5 8th+ gen or AMD Ryzen 5
    • 16 GB RAM
    • Wifi 6
    • RJ-45 gigabit ethernet or USB gigabit adapter

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I do have a spare SSD I can install if it makes it cheaper.

Honestly, I'm just a cheap bastard who wants this to last while I take notes. I used my phone and a Bluetooth keyboard last time I was in school.

I've literally been out of the loop so I dunno what's the bare minimum rn or if I'm under budgeting.

    Photo Editing Laptop around 1000USD

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 06:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      800-1000 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Form Factor, Battery Life, Build Quality. But all are close together....

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Relatively. I use my laptop on my lap a lot of the time and move around quite often.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-16 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photo Editing and occasional video editing. I use Capture One, Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere. See below for Games :)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not really a priority but I run the occasional emulator (n64 and below). A perk but not a need by any stretch of the word, would be able to run apex legends at low settings at 60FPS. I mostly play on console but would be fun to play on PC again

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Full size SD Card slot would be cool as well as full size HDMI port. I want this computer to last a couple years, my last computer I bought in 2014. Ability to connect to external monitor/dock station would be a plus but not a need at the moment

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      Thanks for your help!

Looking for a inexpensive laptop, 13"+ screen, in USA for $750~ that doesn't need to be a world beater but would like good battery and something that will still work in 5~ years

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 05:36 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $750, maybe a little over if it's a great deal

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • no

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Battery life >> build quality >> performance, >>>form factor. Battery life and build quality are much more important than performance, it doesn't need to be fast but I would like it to be usable for 5 years.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • having a lighter laptop would be nice, being portable is important. Being super thin isn't important. I don't want it to be a giant brick though

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 13~" is as small as I'd like to go, doesn't need to be huge but 1080p would be nice

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Would like to do light video editing, but this would mainly be for cricut machine designing Design Space and netflix/youtube

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • no

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • touch screen would be nice but don't want to pay extra for it

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • This is something I'm looking to buy in a few months as a gift. It will be used for light easy video editing (think stuff you can do on your phone, but is easier to do on a laptop) and also making designs for a cricut machine via design. The quality of the screen is more important than the size of the screen.

If it's low on RAM being able to upgrade it later on is a +

Help me choose between laptops for work/general use - 1000€ to 1100€ budget

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 05:08 PM PDT

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
    • Around 1000€, Serbia.
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**
    • No
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**The most important to me is the performance, followed by build quality, battery life anything between 6 to 8 hours works for me.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**
    • Not important at all.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**
    • Minimum 14 inches
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
    • I am going to be mostly using the laptop for work, heavy Google Chrome usage (10+ tabs open usually). Able to run games like Rocket League, SMITE would be a plus.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**
    • Rocket League, MOBA games such as SMITE. 60+ fps is preferred, settings don't matter.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**
    • No.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I have already picked out 3 laptops that are in my price range in my country that I think would suit me, which are:
    • Lenovo Flex 5 Laptop, 14.0" FHD Touch Display, AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, 16GB RAM
    • ASUS VivoBook Pro 14 OLED, 14" WQXGA+ OLED Display, Intel Core i5-11300H, 8GB RAM K3400PA-WH51
    • Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14" Laptop, 14.0" FHD 1920 x 1080 Display, AMD Ryzen 5 3500U Processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM 81W0003QUS

I'd appreciate if you could help me pick between these 3 or make an additional laptop suggestion! Thank you in advance. 🙏

    Is a GE66 Raider Intel Core i9-11980HK - 32Go DDR4 - SSD 2Tb - Nvidia RTX3080 16Go - 15,6" UHD 4K screen future proof?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 01:19 PM PDT

I'd like to keep it for ~5 years and be able to still play/render properly on it without too much issues. I paid $2800 for it and it seemed good enough price and specs wise.

I can still return it and buy something else, but the MSI I have my eyes on is $400 more expensive.

[1000 USD, United States] Game/software development laptop

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 04:32 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Ideally less than 1000 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance is really the only thing here that I care about. Sturdier is also better though
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't really care
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer smaller. I have a T450s thinkpad that I love the size/build quality of, but I would rather have better price/performance.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, game development (2D + 3D in Unity and Godot), and video editing
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 30-60FPS, especially when I'm developing, would be ideal. I don't mind turning the graphics quality down, though.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I really like how this Dell G15 looks. With an RTX 3060 I feel like I'll be pretty well off. I see it for $900 used which seems like a great deal.
