Trying to instal from bootable USB drive onto a laptop currently running linux with a broken screen

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 04:54 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I have a Motile 14 inch laptop Im trying to install home assistant onto. My nephew stepped on it and broke the screen so only the left 1.5 inches works. I had assumed I could plug an HDMI cable in and see it display on the TV but it doesnt support this in BIOS.

M.2 SSD, wouldnt be too difficult to remove and plug into the PC.

I cant figure out how to tell it to boot from the removable media without a screen. I have SSH access, can I tell it to reboot and boot from removable media?

Trying to install home assistant OS, its currently running dietpi.

Wayland breaking icons and names on x11 apps

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 07:10 PM PDT

I am currently using fedora 36 and I like using wayland, it works 99% of the time, except that in some apps (Opera and eclipse ide, for example) it completely breaks the icons and name (Default icon and no name).
I "fixed" eclipse by forcing it to use x11 which works great, but opera in x11 is VERY slow.
So.... How can i fix the icon on opera (With eclipse im fine using x11).

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 10:43 AM PDT

I am using arch linux and I installed proton vpn, but whenever I try connecting to a server or even quick connect, it gives me a list of problems detected. The first is that govt. has restricted usage and to allow alternate routing(it is enabled) and others state problems with network(it is running just fine) and then I get a unknown error has occurred please check your connectivity or contact support..

    Connecting to wifi via terminal

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 04:08 PM PDT

I'm trying to find out how I can connect to a wifi network from the terminal instead of going through the GUI as I'm making the switch to a WM. Would anyone be able to point me to a guide or lay out the commands I could use to do this? Thank you. :)

how to prevent search engines indexing my simple html/css/js website?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:31 PM PDT

I have a directories at /var/www (nginx) and there are sometimes only one index.html file, sometimes some website templates with css directory, img directory, js directory, index.html

how can I prevent search engines from indexing my files? I read something about the robots code, but where should I put this? Or should I create this textfile in the main /var/www/website.com folder?

I hope you can help me :) I think, this question could be important for some other people too. Because hosting with nginx a simple html site doesn't need so many ressources like wordpress with php, databases and so on- but that's not the topic here. hope you can help me :)

Music Player supports touchscreen without desktop environment

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 10:20 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I need recommendations about my small touch screen mobile player project.

I am trying to find a music player supports touchscreen and can work without desktop environment. All I need play music files stored in my Pi Zero 2 sd card.

I looked mpd frontends but most of them web based and I don't want to waste my ram and speed with chromium. Do anyone have an recommendation for such an app?

ncmpcpp layouts with big text is more than enough for my case but it is not supporting touch controls.

Volumio seems okey but it has a lot of functions which I don't need.

Kodi is mostly okey but not supporting portrait mode.

    Any recommendation hugely welcomed.

    Should I make the switch?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 10:12 PM PDT

I have an Asus ZenBook running Windows 10 that I bought back in 2017. It runs extremely slow now. Even when I remove all applications and files, it still struggles to run anything. It runs extremely hot and my battery life is about 30 minutes.

I've been using Linux at work and been really liking it. I've been thinking about switching the OS to Linux hoping this would help save the laptop.

Based on anyone's experience, do you think switching to Linux would make these symptoms better or worse? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :) thanks in advance!

Using Linux VM to dirb scan a practice target VM website server sets off my host firewall? Why and how to do I fix?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 09:13 PM PDT

The firewall was activating much more frequently at first, blocking almost every directory attempt.

I uninstalled my virtualbox, moved my VM folders, reinstalled virtualbox and reinstalled my VMs.

Now the firewall only alerted for two sections. That is an improvement at least.

    Any ideas?

    Issues getting etcher to work

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 09:18 AM PDT

(Ubuntu 20.04) I've been able to get the zip files downloaded, but after extracting or dragging and dropping them, the program does nothing when opened. The icon will be highlighted, but won't open or run, it just sits there like a bump on a log doing nothing.

Is this a common issue? Has anyone been able to find a workaround? I've tried every way of doing this I can find online, but nothing has worked for me so far

I am new to Linux world. Please help me choose a distro!

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 07:46 PM PDT

Before searching for Linux-based operating system, I used Microsoft® Windows® on my laptop. Now, it is 8 years old and does not run well on Windows 10 (I cannot even use the taskbar on Windows, it is broken after updating Windows 10) Therefore, I needed to search for the alternative operating system.

Based on my daily use apps, I found them on both Snapcraft (https://snapcraft.io/)) and Flathub (https://flathub.org/home)), which are available on Linux-based operating system. In addition, my laptop has nVIDIA® graphic card installed and I need to search for Linux-based OS that supports the graphic card. Personally, I don't trust community-based distros which their websites look unreliable or lack technical support. I rather prefer Linux distros, made by big companies which have high credibility (I judge them by their sponsors). So, after searching for them, I have found Linux distros, which meet my requirements:

    - Canonical® Ubuntu®

    - Oracle® Linux

    - Red Hat® Enterprise Linux

    - SUSE® Linux Enterprise

In the list, some are free and some are paid. Canonical® and Oracle® provide free downloads, while Red Hat® and SUSE® offer 60-day free trials. Is it worth to purchase the distro or download it for free and buy the technical supports?

I also worry about "open-source" security management. Because, I have heard that the term "proprietary" is more secure than "open-source". So, do the companies add "proprietary features" to their Linux distros to enhance the security as I subscribe their "commercial technical support"? If so, Which is the best one?

Additionally, my target system to install Linux-based OS is Acer Aspire V5-471G (Intel® i5-3337U (1.8 GHz), RAM 4 GB DDR3, nVIDIA® GeForce® 710M (2GB) and HDD 500 GB 5400 rpm). So, which distro should I install on my laptop? You can recommend other distros that are like the four ones (made by big company and provided technical support)

I am glad to be in Linux world. Thank you.

need help with choosing a distro

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 03:46 PM PDT

ubuntu (used in a vm about 1 year ago) the layout or whatever its called was way to confusing for me.

Pop!_OS (tried on both laptop and pc), i couldn't turn off mouse acceleration, setting it to flat either didn't fully turn it off or it added deceleration. didn't try any games.

Mint (pc), changing mouse sensitivity did nothing, mouse acceleration changed both mouse speed and acceleration but i couldn't turn it off. didn't try any games.

Manjaro (pc), i couldn't change scroll speed. i had the same fps as windows but my frame times where awful bordering on unplayable. tested tf2 and black mesa.

am i just to stupid to for linux? i just want a distro that has a competently made setting menu that actually works so i don't have to install other programs to change basic settings. also something that has good gaming performs would be nice.

    my specs are 16gb 2x8 3200mhz cl16 ram, gtx 1660super, r5 3600, 240gb sata and a 2tb sata ssd, if that's important at all.

english is my second language and it's 00:45 where i live, sorry if anything is incoherent.

How do I boot Manjaro (linux distro) via my usb drive on my "librebooted" Thinkpad x200 (running [Linux] Trisquel OS)?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 07:08 PM PDT

I flashed my iso on balenaEtcher) successfully, however I have no idea get it to go to Manjaro instead of Trisquel OS. My laptop is from eBay btw.

    I followed: https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/solutions/ht118361

However, the Thinkpad logo never shows up, it only shows the Libreboot setup. I keep pressing F12 as it begins to open and it dosen't work

The Libreboot setup always displays this (it always show up whenever the laptop gets turned on after being shutdown):

    Top:

    FREE AS IN FREEDOM

    Here are the options:

    1. Load operating system (incl. fully encrypted data) [o]
    2. Search ISOLINUX menu (AHCI) [a]
    3. Search ISOLINUX menu (USB) [u]
    4. Search ISOLINUX menu (CD/DVD) [d]
    5. Load test configuration (grubtest.cfg) inside of CBFS [t]
    6. Search for GRUB2 configuration on external media [s]

Questions on using linux on a Hybrid "Gaming" laptop (Nvidia/AMD)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 03:07 PM PDT

Just curious on the potential issues and such I could come across running Linux on a laptop with Nvidia/AMD on A Lenovo legion 5 (Rtx 3070, ryzen 7 5800h, 16gb Ram).
I've tried Pop Os, and came across issues with the Hybrid mode (Dynamic) where the display wasn't detected properly which required me to use Discrete graphics.~
Aswell as this on Pop os 22.04, the entire desktop felt slow and sluggish, and ram with almost nothing open was running about 4-6gb (Not sure if that's normal or not so i'm including this)
On Manjaro I had discovered Wayland doesn't work on Discrete (iGPU disabled) but did on dynamic.
Gaming is ideal but isn't a deal breaker if it doesn't completely work, I just know on Pop OS even 2D games had poor performance and lag at times.
(And yes I had all of the drivers up to date and I am on high performance.)
How would it work with the Hybrid graphics? Since iI typically disable the iGpu when on windows due to it appearing to have better gaming performance while on windows when sticking with Discrete rather than using both.

How does power plans work on distros since this is a laptop? Pop OS is the only distribution i've come across where I can choose power saver, balanced or High performance, with the option being gone on most systems, this isn't a problem for me as long as it is always on High performance, and isn't capped, as I don't really travel with the laptop and would like it on the highest performance at all times.

I am looking to have a Arch based system at some point, but with issues i've experienced on Pop and Manjaro looking for an alternative or solutions to go for while I learn Linux more.

    Thanks for reading :)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 10:38 AM PDT

Pop OS on non GPT formatted disk

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 10:37 AM PDT

So, unfortunately my old laptop HDD isn't formatted in GPT, it's in NTFS and it's preventing me from installing Pop OS because apparently I have to put the boot partition on a GPT disk. So any tips as to how to proceed from here? Any suggestions to alternative distros are also welcome. Thanks

Switched GPU and now I'm having weird screen issues on 2/3 of my available drivers.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 04:25 PM PDT

I just switched over to an Nvidia gpu from an AMD gpu, and everything worked fine on the windows end, but on linux (I'm running mint) both of the nvidia graphics drivers seem to cause problems. Both the 510 and 470 make my screen flicker a bit. The entire screen will also sometimes go black except for "interactable" areas like the password field upon logging in. I'm not exactly sure at all what's going on.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

GPU beforehand was an RX570 8GB OC model from MSI New GPU is an EVGA 3060 12GB XC gaming model

As someone who is looking to set up a dual boot between Windows (for work) and Linux, which is the best distro?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:29 PM PDT

I am going to be using Windows for work only as they require work specific programmes/actions.

However for Linux I plan on using it for the following activities (but not limited to):

    • Streaming
    • (Light) Photo Editing
    • Browsing (social media sites, news, stocks etc)
    • (Light) coding

I would like the distro to be one that is constantly pushing new updates and is fun to use.

    Thank you so much.
