Is it normal for computer to ping a network printer this often? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST I have two network printers in my house. I recently installed AdGuard and it appears that the two printers are in the most commonly queried domains on the network (with one being queried 9,155 times in the last 24 hours). The domains are listed in the above screenshot. I blacked out part of the domains because it's the mac address of the printers. A few questions:
I'm new to home networking so trying to get a feel for what's normal/acceptable. edit: thanks for all the replies and information. I'm glad to know it's normal network traffic and nothing to be concerned about. I really appreciate everyone's time and knowledge! [link] [comments] |
Am I wrong to expect an outdoor ethernet cable to preform as well as that of an indoor cable? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:21 PM PST Context: I purchased a google wifi system to help strengthen the wifi in a lot of areas of the house, and I've noticed that the speeds were sometimes over double than my computer's ethernet cable. Here were some tests I ran: (XFinity XB3) -> Ethernet -> Laptop port: 360 MBPS fr Google Speed Test (XFinity XB3) -> Ethernet -> Main Google Wifi Puck -> Switch -> Ethernet -> Laptop port: 450 MBPS from Google Speed Test (How did I get a 90 MBPS increase?) 259 from SpeedTest net (XFinity XB3) -> Outdoor Ethernet -> Laptop Port (a separate room away): 90 MBPS from Google Speed Test (Secondary Google Wifi Puck) -> Ethernet -> Switch -> Laptop Port (in the same room as Puck, but different room from XB3): 150/175 MBPS from Google Speed Test, 158 from SpeedTest net (Secondary Google Wifi Puck) -> Ethernet -> Switch -> Outdoor Ethernet -> Laptop Port (in the same room as XB3, a room away from Puck): 50/90 MBPS from Google Speed Test, 94 from SpeedTest net So the outdoor ethernet cable seems to be the main area where the signal degrades to be around 90 MBPS. The question is, why? I bought it from here: (the cable is 100 feet in total length) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074JXFV92/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_.z2dGbWH111MN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and everything seems to be fine, but upon checking the numbers, it does not add up why it does not deliver similiar MBPS if the cable has all the protections it needs. Or was I wrong to expect this cable to still have high MBPS? It's a cable that still is functional and useful to me, but I do wonder why it has a lower MBPS... [link] [comments] |
Should I use my router with my ATT Fiber? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:56 AM PST Recently switched to ATT Fiber and I got theBGW210-700 from ATT. I have a router already when I use to have Xfinity but I wanna use the router. I have it plugged in to the modem and it doesnt seem to have any issues right now is there any thing else I need to do in the settings or is it just plug in and its set? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:59 PM PST First I would like to say that I am not too sure if I am posting in the right community, if not I will greatly appreciate where the right place to post this. OK, here it goes, I want to purchase a mesh wifi system for my home. The reason being is that I live in a small old house, in which the walls are very thick and made of adobe. My modem and wifi router is located in a corner of my living room on one far side of the house. I can't move it to a better location because that is where the coax cable is located and the cable is short. I also have a WiFi extender that is working for now, but I do not like the fact that I have to switch to that extender every time I go to the other side of the house. The problem that I have is which mesh system to get. So my questions are.... Are they worth buying? Which one is best? Will it work with Spectrum? (I have their modem and wifi router) Will it be a simple plug and connect? [link] [comments] |
PC only recieving 100mbit instead of 1gbit Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:43 PM PST I've just upgraded my switch to 1gbit instead of 100mbit after noticing this a week ago. The switch downstairs is still sending 100mbit to my PC, which has a switch before it, whilst sending 1gbit trough all other ports. I have no clue why it is happening and cant fix the issue at all. All cables are Cat 5e and switches are gigabit, my PC has a 2.5gbit port. Ive switched cables to different ports, updated my LAN software, tried different devices but nothing has worked. Im using a Gigabyte b550i aorus pro ax motherboard with latest drivers. Switch is TP-link SG105e (Managed) Does anyone know how to fix this? Solved! THANK YOU everyone who helped out! Avoiding Double NAT in apartment complex by using Ethernet switch? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:11 PM PST I recently moved into an apartment complex which provides residents with their own internet. The Internet is provided by the apartment and I connect directly to an ethernet jack on the wall. I bought my own router to set up my own wifi network. When I went to test my Xbox One's network settings, I found I had not only a Double NAT, but also a strict NAT type. From what I understand Double NAT means you're going through 2 router security walls, one being my routers and the other being the apartment complexes, which I do not have access to. When I connect my Xbox with an ethernet cable directly to the wall ethernet jack I get a strict NAT type and UPNP disabled, but no Double NAT. Additionally it appears that my xbox live has no connectivity issues when I do this. However I have two xbox ones as my girlfriend and I game together so I require more than this one wall port. Could I conceivably use an ethernet switch with three ports to plug both xboxes directly into the wall to avoid the double NAT and still use my router. Also will a strict NAT type and UPNP disabled still cause issues. Thanks for any advice you all can give. [link] [comments] |
Is my dad doing the right thing for the WiFi in our house? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 03:15 PM PST So.... The WiFi has always been bad in our area. I think It's something along the lines of BT not upgrading the cables in our area but I really don't know what I'm talking about. My parents have been trying to get the WiFi to work in our house on and off for the last 10 years. Recently, the main router has been fine, it has just been that the coverage in the house is awful. I've been trying to persuade my dad for the last couple weeks to get a wired access point/extender for the house. This shouldn't cost much - max £80 for the ubiquiti AC lite and the ethernet cable and should solve the problem of coverage in the house. My dad is stubborn. And doesn't like the idea of a wire running through the house. I don't really understand his reasons though. My dad says we should get this: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01NBMMVG7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_la1dGb9PJSFWP In fairness, he has done his research and linked me to a couple good reviews of it. But how will this wireless WiFi extender be any different to the ones we have used in the past with mediocre success? (plus being more expensive than my solution). Any thoughts or general advice on this? And sorry if I'm missing something obvious. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Fiber speed user experience for home + home office use Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:56 PM PST Fiber just became available in my area. My local provider offers 100/100 @ $60, 200/200 @ $70 and 1000/1000 at $100. The fastest speed I get on Wifi is around 400/400 with my laptops, or 950/950 when plugged in. We have 3 separate AP's in the house. My work VPN only runs at 150/150 and I use it all day. My family does the usual stuff (school, videos, gaming, on-line backup, etc.) Anyone used similar speeds and were they happy at 200Mb to save a few $, or is it worthwhile to get Gb speeds? Any different user experience? [link] [comments] |
Need help to troubleshoot internet connection drastically slowing down. In Ontario. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:40 PM PST The problem: Internet slows down severely from 120mbps to 10mbps randomly. When this happens I get kicked out of online games, Netflix streams degrade in quality significantly. Can't even stream a hockey game without it pausing every few seconds making it unwatchable. Backstory: When we first moved into house in 2013 the moving truck happened to snag the cable line to the house ripping it off the house where it was connected. Cable company (Cogeco) tech came out and put it back up and higher so it wouldn't happen again. Don't remember the tech testing the line after putting it back up. Since then I have had these providers to try and rectify said problem above: NRTCO Fiber connection 15mbps (I think this was Fiber to Coax) Teksavvy Cable 20mbps Cogeco Cable 60mbps Carrytel Cable 102mbps (Current Provider) When I was with NRTCO and Teksavvy it would slow down to the point I couldn't play an online XBox 360 game. Checking my email took a long time to load. This is why I kept switching, thinking it was the provider and upping the connection speed. I have also changed the modems, and routers, thinking it maybe the equipment causing the slow downs. Right now I am using Carrytel's Technicolor TC4350 modem, and upgraded to the Linksys WRT 3200ACM as my router. Have called Cogeco when I was with them and Carrytel several times and told them about the cable being pulled off my house and they insist they have tested everything on their side and that the cable is fine. 3000sqft House with Gigabit Internet getting about 90mb/s Upstairs Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:36 PM PST Hi everyone, I need some help with what I should do to fix the networking in my house. I live in a 3100sqft house in Canada. We recently picked up Telus PureFibre gigabit internet, and although the speeds about 1m away from the router are pretty good (500-750gbps depending on 2.4/5Ghz band), my room which is on the other side of the house is getting really low speeds of 60mpbs with drop offs. I have been looking at a couple options including mesh and MoCa. I already tried power line and it was bad (barely any improvement). Here's the situation: - coaxial all over house (it was built in the 90s) but no ethernet in the walls. - some rooms upstairs can get 200mpbs but most are well under 100. Should I get: a) a mesh system (looking at Eero6, Nest Wifi or Nighthawk AX1800) b) A MoCa adapter (I also have an extra AirPort Extreme if that helps in anyway). c) Give up Thank you! Netgear Nighthawk R6700 keeps turning off Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:33 PM PST Im going to start with i feel so lost. I dont seem to understand networking. I have a nighthawk r6700 with am att BWG210. I think its in pass-through mode but not sure. My nighthawk just keeps restarting. Over and over and over. All of the lights are doing their thing then all of the sudden theyre all off and the router is going through initial reset. I can barely get enough time to know it doesnt need to be updated. Its plugged into an outlet. The att router stays on and active. The only thing i got was netgear said its ATTs problem and ATT says its netgears problem. [link] [comments] |
Desktop internet speed weirdness Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:19 PM PST So, recently just ran cat7 after having my Cat5E cable crap out and short to 100/100 (i'm paying for 500/500). The new cable is giving the full gb up and down to the router, and that is working fine and dandy. However, download speeds are at the correct 500, but upload speeds are 170ish on my desktop. I thought maybe it's the second cable I made for myself, so I plugged directly from the modem into the desktop, and got 170/6. Any idea of how to fix my upload speed, and why speeds would be so much worse without the router in between? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
MoCA connection - shuts off without permission Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:02 PM PST Reddit, I set up my MoCA connection and for my upstairs electronics. They're all hardwired through my 2 separate MoCA adapters. For 6 months, they worked great without any flaws, then one day, they shut off. Now, every time I log into my router (192.168.... etc), my MoCA connection is turned off. Then I need to take the time to turn it back on, and the connection will run for either a full day or 5 minutes, then turn off again. Rinse and repeat the steps above. I've already reset my modem and router to no avail. Had a Cox technician come over and reset it himself, nothing worked. I need a fix because my WiFi is terrible for my upstairs connections, no idea what the issue is. Any advice will help. Thanks guys. [link] [comments] |
Setup Question: switch Vlan router. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:04 PM PST So I have a USG and am planning on upgrading to a UDMP. The issue is all of my cable terminations are in a shared utility room with the 4 other apt. in my building. I would like to put the UDMP in my server rack so it can be climate and dust controlled. Could I put a switch setup with 2 Vlans to connect it all? Vlan1 would pass the WAN connection through to the UDMP and Vlan2 would connect all of the other terminations. Would this keep all traffic behind the UDMP? [link] [comments] |
Occasional ping spike causing in-game lag Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:37 PM PST Hey guys, I'm hoping you can help me out here.. I have been having an awful connection issue across my PC. At any random time throughout the day my connection seems like it will instantaneously like "drop" and come right back up. It's not enough to take me totally offline. It is not enough lag to kick me from a game, not enough to kick me from discord. My counter-strike games the ping will spike from 30 to anywhere from 50-90. My discord will go from 3 green bars to 1 red one. It is just like the connection briefly drops and picks right back up. What is weird is that ping that it spikes to normally itself isn't ever "laggy" for me, but when my ping spikes to that it is an insane amount of lag like it would be at 300+ ping. I have Cox Communications as it is the only provider available for decent speeds around here. I get 150 down and 15 up. I do not have that many devices on my network. A laptop is on here and there, an Xbox here and there, same with streaming devices. My Vivint security system is as well. I am playing on a wired connection, I have not been able to notice it over Wi-Fi. I am firmly believing this is a provider or house issue in itself at this point, not equipment. I am hoping you guy's can provide me with a little help before I have to pay someone to come out and diagnose/fix it. I have tried playing on wired and wi-fi and still experience it. When the connection is working without drops it is awesome. I am unsure if there is any more coax splitters coming from outside the house to where it connects to my modem other then what I can see. The cable is in the ceiling of the finished basement so I am not sure how I would check anyways. I have attached my modem logs and levels in imgur pics here: https://imgur.com/a/EDQb4yk, my router log does not show anything but these below all going to different mac addresses: [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.7]] to MAC address (misc address) [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.8)] to MAC address (misc address) [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.9)] to MAC address (misc address) I have done the following myself in an attempt to diagnose/fix my problems -
Please if there is anything else you would like/need from me or anything I could try, let me know. Thank you very much!! [link] [comments] |

Can you please critique my network draft? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:06 PM PST I need to redo my network, and the theme is essentially "simple" In the future I do want to get a small 10gb switch and make a very small section of my network 10g. That will be between the NAS and Proxmox server, then 2 - 3 runs across my house. Can you please critique my rough draft and poke holes if you can. Certain things really don't need much to talk to each other. I kind of laid out the primary things I want to communicate just so I could see at a glance what was important. My DNS and SMTP servers would need to be accessible as well. Since my network is so small, I can honestly get away with rules based on IPs and IP ranges. The Access point will have 3 of the vlans set up on it and the AP itself will live on the IOT vlan and have an IP from that. Thanks. Hurt my feelings. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:45 PM PST Hi guys, I hope you guys can help point me in the right direction. I'm finally making the step to 1gb speeds, so I need to get rid of my old modem that only supports up to 150 Mbps. I'm currently using Netgear's R7000 as my router. Will this allow 1gb speed? These are the only compatible modems with the provider:

Asus ZenFi XT Firmware Upgrade Breaks Sonos Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:36 PM PST Friendly PSA, at least in my experience. Upgrading your Asus ZenFi XT to 3.0.0.4.386_25790 causes extreme instability with some Sonos devices. In my case my Play1s and Play3 were borked, while my Move continued to work just fine. Rolling back to the previous firmware fixed it right up. [link] [comments] |
Home needing 2 WiFi range extenders, need recommendation thanks! Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:51 PM PST Hi, my father in law just purchased a larger home with concrete walls and I think he will need 2 range extenders for adequate coverage. I have 1 in my home but I was not sure what to recommend to him as he may most likely need 2. Are there any optimal setups/products for seamless use and good coverage? thanks in advance. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:50 PM PST Currently in a 2000 sq. ft apartment, with slowly diminishing WiFi. Here is the problem. The second bedroom is the baby room, and router, being on the opposite side of the place, isn't hitting the room well at all (1, 2 bars at best), and is not enough to reliably handle a smart baby monitor feed. At times the monitor won't even connect. The layout: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0o28hmwt2ijobmr/wifi%20mess%20to%20wifi%20mesh.pdf?dl=0 While we are moving out of the place in a few months, I wanted to look into a mesh system that I can potentially take with me to a house. Out of all the systems I've read about, Google Nest and AmpliFi stuck out the most due to reliability and simplicity. I am leaning towards AmpliFi, but that's quite the jump in price between Instant and HD. Is HD really that much better for average consumer needs (baby monitor, streaming, Zoom meetings)? I can see the side-by-side specs are really in favour of HD, but for my needs, is HD an overkill, or will Instant do the job just fine? I also would not want to put the wifi point/router directly in a baby room (next room is fine). Really looking forward to turning my WiFi situation from a WiFi mess into a WiFi mesh. 🙏 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:37 PM PST My WiFi has been dropping once or twice a day recently and I have no ethernet port near my computer, so I got a Translite MoCA 2.5 adapter to try to fix the issue. I am truly confused by the ten YouTube videos I have watched (none seem to have both a modem and a router) and by the instruction manual (same), so I thought I would ask here. I have it set up, and my WiFi is working, but my computer is getting nothing from the Ethernet cable. The MOCA adapter connected to my computer (as opposed to the one connected to my modem and router) has a green light next to LAN1 that blinks once every 2 seconds, whereas the adapter at my modem/router has a solid green light on LAN1. Neither has the light next to MOCA on.
Then, on the computer side:
So that's the setup. As a note, the splitters do say 5MHz to 1GHz, so I assume I should get some higher-rated splitters either way. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Is MoCA the right solution for me? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:34 PM PST I have two rooms in my house that need a strong and consistent internet connection. My home is relatively small, about 1,200sqft, but the rooms are on the exact opposite ends of the home. Currently, I have a modem (connected via coaxial) and router in one of the rooms. The only coaxial cables in the home are each in the respective rooms.
My only options left seem to be running a wire a great length through the home, drilling through to the attic to run wires (both unattractive options due to wire pathing logistics), or MoCA. I've read a bit and watched some videos on MoCA, and I have seen multiple ways to set it up. Some times requiring a splitter, some times requiring POE Filters, I am not 100% sure how the physical setup would work, and if it will even provide a better connection than EoE. Any advice regarding my networking setup is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How do I boost the signal of a public hotspot I'm paying for? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:12 PM PST Title. I'm paying for Optimum Internet, which comes with Optimum Hotspot access, which happens to be faster than my internet connection.....ridiculous I know, but it's a blessing in disguise when I need to download large files. I don't own a physical hotspot device as Optimum doesn't provide one. Recently, the signal strength of the Hotspot has gone down. I can only get a good signal in my kitchen, and I need something to boost that signal so my wireless devices in the next room can access it. Help? [link] [comments] |
