    Simple Questions - September 12, 2018

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

ZOTAC GTX 1080 Mini ($500) or MSI 1070 Ti Titanium ($480)?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:00 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

Stuck between a rock and a hard place and after reading tons of reviews I can't choose...

I can either get a GTX 1080 Mini for $500 (CAD) or a 1070 Ti for $480... For the $20 is it worth hitting up the 1080 mini? or should I get the 1070 Ti and OC it?

Need help with that extra push for a decision...

[Build Complete] Budget Vega Build - Desk Mutilation Edition

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:22 AM PDT

Here's an obligatory picture of the PC guts.

Here's an album of everything (explanation below)

I have a minimalist-style setup with my docking station and XPS 13 for work/productivity. It was my goal to get a budget MicroATX build that would fit inside the desk cabinet so I could preserve the minimal look of everything. I have a KVM switch for my docking station and gaming PC, so the peripherals are shared between both. It's working out really, really nicely.

Yes, I did take a circular saw to the back of my desk for air flow so y'all wouldn't yell at me. I picked this Versa case because it's sturdy, cheap, and was amazing to build in. It's out of sight, so I had no need for windows and RGB etc.

I've had this LG ultra-wide for productivity for quite a while. It just so happens that it has FreeSync, so I landed a sweet deal on a Vega 56.

I tried to keep it under a grand, and actually managed to keep it under $900 so I'm really happy:

Help on which part to upgrade

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 05:26 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

I made a PC 3 or 4 years ago, mainly for playing. Until recently I did not have any trouble running the games I wanted to but now, with recent ones, some FPS drops tend to happen (for example on nba 2K19).

Because of this I would like to upgrade my PC and would be very thankful if you could give me some advices on which part to upgrade first (I do not want to change the whole build).

Here is what I have right now :

Video card : GeForce GTX 970

    CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz

    RAM : 8GO DDR3 (2x 4GO)

    Motherboard : MSI Z97 PC Mate(MS-7850)

    I use a AOC G2460VQ6 24" 1920 x 1080 75Hz

So what part do you think is the weakest point ?

Thank you and sorry if my english is not good

Above is the list of my components. I installed everything and went to go for my initial post. When I turned the PSU on the led lights came to life and began to pulse. Since everything was wired up, including the case, I pushed in the power button and watched as my MOBO started to run through its codes. It would slow down on a few mostly dealing with memory so I went through the steps outlined in Toms Hardware failure to post, post. I have reset the CMOS several times, tried double ram in different positions as well as single ram in all slots for both sticks. I took the motherboard out, checked all of the standoffs and looked for anything that might be shorting it out. As I went through some of the steps listed on Tom's Hardware post my motherboard would randomly start cutting the power out on its attempt to post. Also I don't think my motherboard came with a speaker so I haven't heard a single noise come from my motherboard. I have been checking over articles all day and I'm struggling to find any answers. I will be glued to the laptop for the next couple of hours hoping to find some answers. I've also tried to contact Asrock via email however it seems they respond quite slowly.

Thanks in advance for any help!

At what point does Windows not recognize your "old" hardware if you plan on swapping out for future hardware?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:42 AM PDT

Did some preliminary search on Google and Youtube but doesn't really allude to the answer I'm finding. Was planning on building a starter AM4 build and upgrade along the future with the graphics cards but I'm worried about having to buy Windows license all the time if I swap out parts.

With that said, at what point does Windows not recognize your "old" hardware if you plan on swapping out for future hardware?

I have Windows Education right now sitting on a piece of paper but I don't want to use it and 1 hardware upgrade later, it's useless and I'll have to buy another license. I can't get Education elsewhere and it's only given once to an .edu account and I'm hoping I can use it later when my future pc comes along.

UPDATE1:Read through the comments during break time. Watched the video but only provided that you'll only have a certain number of activations "at some point". Whether that was a reference to a number of hardware swaps or the time aspect, I don't know. It doesn't really provide a comprehensive if-and-then conditions to the limitations of the your activation.

Also a few comments gravitated towards the MB swap and can confirm on their website that it's a hardware that's very sensitive to the activation of your digital license. Some users were able to reactive after the swap but other users weren't able to so ????

The answer to my question seems to vary and the information we have is a little limited to have a clear and evident answer. Perhaps it'll be good for another post topic that'll enlighten us about the clear limitations of Windows' activation requirements for hardware swaps.

Deep learning / scientific computing rig with 4 GPUs

I'd like to ask for your comments about the PC configuration I came up with. The computer will be used for deep learning, but not only. We plan to spend ~6,5k euro on it. 3 people will be using it, sometimes simultaneously (via ssh).

Here is a link to the configuration in part picker (there are some differences between the listed config and what I found - listed below):

The differences are: 4xGPU instead of 2x; the power supply would depend on the store where we would buy all the components and it would be either https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/1800-Watt-LC-Power-Mining-Edition-LC1800-Non-Modular-80--Bulk_1230790.html or https://www.alternate.de/PC/PC-Konfigurator#!/product//50/1258552

I was considering using Inno3d 1080 Ti Hybrid cards ( https://www.bit-tech.net/reviews/tech/graphics/inno3d-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-ichill-black-review/1/ ) instead of the FEs, but I don't know whether they and their additional radiators could fit in the case & mainboard (they take 2.5 slots). Does it make sense to mix the two types? How severe are cooling problems with 4 reference cards?

In one of the two stores that are considered I could choose between 128GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400 CL14 and 2666 CL16. The other store has only the 2666 CL16 version. I read that the CL14 would be better for the Threadripper. How big is the differece, isn't it negligible?

The two disks are there to set up RAID.

    Any comments are appreciated!

EDIT: The fact that each of the 4 cards uses a PCIe slot and the SSD does it as well is a problem, right? Is the best solution picking a SSD that doesn't use PCIe?

What's the bottleneck of my PC?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 08:53 AM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

I bought a 2nd hand PC to leave at my mums house so when I go back to visit I have something there to play on but it's not getting the FPS's I'd like it to. I probably paid a bit more for it than I should have but whatever.

The specs are... UserBenchmarks: Game 28%, Desk 39%, Work 27%

    Model Bench
    CPU AMD FX-6300 41.8%
    GPU AMD R9 380 32.4%
    SSD Adata Ultimate SU800 256GB 56.9%
    RAM Unknown CL11-11-11 D3-1600 CT102464BA160B.C16 16GB 27.5%
    MBD Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0

This was rated while I was playing Wreckfest at 40fps on low. I'm not too concerned with playing Crysis at max graphics in 4k or anything but I'd like some solid fps at medium/high settings.

Am I best off upgrading the CPU or Graphics card in your opinions?

    Thanks!

Gaming PC For Friend £500 to £600 range

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:49 PM PDT

So my friend really wants to get into PC gaming and has £600 to spend.

I have suggested the same as me : I have suggested this one as is its the one I have with an SSD - https://www.acpcs.co.uk/collections/new/products/part-refurbished-intel-core-i5-with-8gb-memory-and-dedicated-graphics-card-gtx-1060?variant=6822568755233

We don't really know how to build PCs and are from the UK so prebuilt is the only really option. So was bassiclly wondering if any of you cool people would know one that we could buy him?

Any suggestions for cheap office chairs?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 09:59 AM PDT

I've been satisfied with my chair for like a decade but to be honest it's probably not very ergonomic and it's REALLY torn up. My budget isn't very high though, around $100. I will say that I have a few pet peeves, in that I like a chair I can lean back rather than forward in (I don't do the "computer troll" position) and I am not a big fan of arms, as my current chair is armless and I slide all the way up to the desk with my legs under. If it did have arms I would really prefer they be detachable or low enough to slide under the desk. (About 26" tall)

Thank in advance if anyone does reply.

First time builder. Overwhelmed with options. Need help!

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:08 PM PDT

Hi there. I've been looking through options from pre built to individual parts and can't seem to land on a definitive decision. I'm not trying to get a crazy rig but I'd like something I won't have to worry about for quite a while and money isn't too much of a concern for parts or whole systems. I'd also want something I can upgrade myself when the time comes. I'm planning on mainly using this for college work, mostly CS classes, but having gaming capabilities would be great for the future. For pre built I was looking at Digital Storm or the Corsair One (seems a BIT overboard for my wants). For building it myself I've got this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm worried I'm going overboard with parts but don't want to just go grab a Dell or something from best buy. Thanks!

Vibrations restart PC like a power loss.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:27 PM PDT

So first thing first, here is my hardware.

So my computer is the following:

    • Motherboard: Asus Prime Z370-A
    • CPU: Intel Core I5-8600k
    • GPU: Nvidua Evga GTX 1070 SC
    • Storage: Samsung SSD 850 EV0 500GB
    • Ram: Trident Z RGB DDR4 8gb (2 of them totally to 16gb)
    • Case: fractal define-r6-black-tg
    • Cooler: Cryorig H5
    • PSU: Evga 850 G2

    The problem

Computer worked fine for 2 months after I built it, eventually I started getting restarts every now and then, its like someone pressed the restart button or pulled out the power cord.

Restarts happen when I'm playing games (3-10 minutes before it restarts) or can happen with nothing opened and in desktop.

When the computer rertarts it does not instantly turn back on, sometimes the computer will not power up at all, I've found if you hit the top of the case then the computer "magically" powers up.

The problem once dissapeared for 5 weeks, so I could play as many games as I wanted but now it has returned again. I can't play games without the computer restarting and when you power off the computer it won't power back on until you hit the top of the case.

What I've done to fix it

I replace the gpu, I've reseated everything except the cpu. I've unplugged everything then replugged back in. I've updated the BIOS, I've monitored for overheating (It's not that).

I'm guessing its a faulty psu but I really can't afford to buy a new one just on the off chance, the same goes for all the other compenents like cpu and motherboard, ram ect.

The thing I can't understand is why the problem just dissapeared for weeks and I could do what ever I wanted like the problem was resolved.

I'm sure hitting the case to turn it on is a big indicater of what is wrong but I can't figure it out. If anyone has read all this and has a suggestion then please let me know.

    TLDR?

Computer resets like a power cord was removed and does not turn back on until you hit the case, it seems to be related to gaming but there are cases where the system is not at load (eg on desktop) and it restarts. Problems also magically went away for 5 weeks then returned.

Here's an example of "View Reliability History" to show you the restarts and how unpredictable it is. This is set to show over weeks and I can't seem to find anything in the system error, almost like its doesn't have enough time to write down information.

Edit 1: PC can shut down due to vibrations (moving off a chair) and will not start until you hit the top of the case a few times in the right spot. I'm not sure why vibrations seem to turn on and off the computer but I hope someone has a good idea of what might be faulty.

I wanna get the most bang out of my buck! Please feel free to critique anything else that may be upgraded or cut down whilst maintaining the same performance!!

    some bad pics https://imgur.com/a/tvfL2j0

This build was first put together about 3 months ago but i just wasnt 100% happy with it. First I had it in the Meshify c case but i didnt like how close my video card was to the radiator.

Next I moved it to a define r6. great case really nice to work in but without the tinted glass of the meshify the 3 red led's on my motherboard as well as the gpu colors really showed and messed with my idea of having a black and white build.

I thought about just going black and red that would have been easy, but i felt like it was too much like the computers i built years ago (haf x cases red led fans ).

I decided to add just a little red to the build with some cablemod cables. Was aiming for something like 60% black 30% white and 10% red as far as color scheme.

Next i went for the delid on my 8700k i was able to drop around 20c on my cpu. Since I didnt fry the chip i thought to myself hey lets see what i can do with my gpu temps. picked up the kraken g12 aio bracket and dropped around 25c on my gpu. it also has the benefit of adding some more white to the build.

The gpu aio fans and vrm fan are hooked up to the built in case fan hub , i have the 4 fans for the cpu aio and the 2 exhaust fans hooked up to a silverstone 8 pwm fan hub.

Overall im super happy with the way the build turned out. really only thing im not 100% with is the mess of cables coming out the kraken x62 but i did the best i could. (i knew going in that the cooler wouldnt clear my ram and i actually kind of like the sideways nzxt logo)

any parts that got replaces fans , cables, evga clc will be used in my ryzen build. it gets all the hand me down parts

This might bejust another post in this sub about winning the T-shirt but this is my first time winning a giveaway so I'm really excited!

TL;DR - Just won a 1 mil celebration giveaway T-shirt from pcpartpicker and wanted to make this post for appreciation.

    Upgrade help for my Parents

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 06:10 AM PDT

So my parents own a late 2009 iMac and have complained recently about it slowing down a lot, which they claim must be the hard drive filling up. I suggested may be due to the hard drive slowing down as its now a 9 year old mechanical (confirmed: has random reads of 0.5 Mb/s).

I told them that unless they are ok with still using it in its current state or even worse in the future, their options would be to upgrade to an SSD (would need to be 500GB or 1TB) or buy a new computer.

For general browsing, word processing, and file sorting, I suggested that a new iMac would be quite overpriced ($1599 for 2.3GHz 1TB 5400rpm or $2200 for 3.4GHz and 1TB Hybrid) and I could build them a new one, they could use an old TV as a monitor and reuse the keyboard and mouse.

    100% disk usage

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 02:21 PM PDT

Hey guys, so recently mg ssd shows 100% disk usage even when the read speed says 0.1mb/s. It does the occasionally and then goes away but the PC is unusable during that time. Any ideas what's causing this? I disable superfetch and windows search but it still happens.

    Specs: Ryzen 5 2600 16gb ddr4 2400mhz ram GTX 1060 3gb 120gb Kingston SSD ( Not sure of model)

    Thanks!

    Moving to a new computer

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:25 PM PDT

I'm building a new computer and selling my old one to a friend. We'll call my old computer (the one I'm giving to him) Computer A and the new one (the one I'm building for myself) Computer B.

I'm taking the SSD and HDD out of Computer A to use in Computer B, because they have all my data and games. So I bought a new SSD and HDD for Computer A. I've downloaded Windows onto a flash drive. I'm under the assumption that I will need this flash drive to put windows on Computer A, because it will have a new boot drive. I'm also under the assumption that Computer B will not need a copy of windows, because I'll be putting my original SSD in it.

Are both of my assumptions correct? Am I going about this the right way?

    Ryzen 7 1700 or 2700?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 04:57 AM PDT

Should I invest in the newer 2700 or will a 1700 be fine for my new build? I plan on using it for gaming, editing, and occasional streaming. Budget is around $1800 bucks. I'm just trying to see if there's really any reason to spend more on the 2700, and if there's anything that would be make it worth spending the extra $80 bucks.
