I completely lost my 5G band on an ASUS router

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:05 PM PDT

Tried to do AiMesh with combined band so that I only have one SSID in the house. On paper sounds like a great idea, but reality, ASUS firmware is not ready.

After resetting the router, it is no longer broadcasting 5GHz band.

I have tried -firmware upgrade/downgrade -multiple factory reset -also tried NVRAM erase command

nothing worked to get the 5G band back.

    What am I missing?

    ASUS ACRH13 slow ethernet

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:30 PM PDT

Hello all, thanks for taking the time to read. I am NOT good with network tech...

I have an ASUS ACRH13 router that I am getting slow Ethernet (and wireless) from. My setup is cable modem > router > D-Link switch (it supports 1Gbps) > desktop PC.

When I run Ethernet straight from modem > PC, I am getting 100Mbps. However, through the router, I'm getting only 8. I've updated firmware and rebooted the router. I've googled around and tried to check a few things that were rumored to help, but I cant make any improvements. Please help!

Here are some screenshots of my settings.

Have a wireless mesh network at home but having cat6 run through my house soon. Should I get an unmanaged or managed switch?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:09 PM PDT

I have a simple setup right now. My NETGEAR CM700 (32x8) DOCSIS 3.0 Gigabit Cable Modem. and my Google Mesh WiFi 3-Pack currently meet our needs in our 2 floor townhouse but as soon as you go upstairs, download speeds go way down. My speed is 400/20 but upstairs it's more like 60-100 down / 20 up.

Since I'm having cat6 run through and I'll be directly connecting my 2 Google pucks upstairs, should I get an unmanaged or managed switch? Since the order of things connected will be:

Modem -> Google Router > (un)managed switch -> Google Pucks

From what I understand, unmanaged switches can have points of collision that will result in packer loss and unpredictable/reduced performance.

Am I making the right choice with UAP-AC-Lite instead of EAP-225V3

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:14 PM PDT

So, I've read the reviews of the both the UAP-AC-Lite and the EAP-225V3 on SmallNetBuilder. The EAP-225V3 clearly has better performance now and for about $11 cheaper, but the UAP-AC-Lite seems to have the better firmware/software support for the future.

TP-Link seems to update firmware farely irregularly. Some of their older APs have only had one firmware update per year. And, per this discussion their website isn't the best for finding the firmware.

I live in a 1500 sqft, three storey townhouse. I currently have a Quantum Gateway rented from Verizon, which is mostly fine. I plan to replace it with the older Actiontec router I bought online, which I'll use to convert from WAN MOCA to ethernet and initially as my router. (ONT is outdoors, and I live in a rental.) And then the AP I'll purchased for the wifi connection. I'll start with one, and a second if I need it. The family has an iphone each, and several ipads and kindle fires that float around the house. Roku, xbox and my gaming PC are all wired in.

So, should I get with everyone's favorite Ubiquiti, or get the TP-Link?

I definitely welcome the expert advice of /u/mercenary_sysadmin

    WLAN module means hardware?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:58 PM PDT

    Hi,

Inside my 4G modem/router there is table named WLAN module, each line contains a possible SSID setup, all disabled except the one I use, my question is, is there a hardware part for each module? like a separate antenna or something, I mean if I disable SSID1 and enable the last one, would different parts of the modem operate or it's just 100% software?

Does Ethernet affect WiFi at all? Other Ethernet questions too.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:52 PM PDT

So I got three new Ethernet cables (these ones: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SHZYCG8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and had a few noobish questions. Now, I only had two Ethernet cables plugged into my Linksys EA7500, one for my desktop and one for my PS3. My PS4 is right next to my PS3 but I didn't have any Ethernet cables so had it on WiFi and it was fine. Anyway, the two Ethernet cables I had for my desktop and PS3 were very twisted, with the rubber around it ripped and the inner wires exposed. Thought it time to get new ones, and got an extra for my PS4. Anyway, being the worrywart I am, I was curious if plugging in another Ethernet cable into my router and using up three ports now will affect WiFi in any way? Like, will it take away speed from devices on WiFi if those devices on Ethernet are on?

Also, my previous two cables were 25 ft, but I got 50ft ones now for my three devices. Will the extra length cause any problems, like latency or whatever? And the Ethernet cables are bent from being rolled up in the packaging and can't really flatten them. Does them being bent affect anything, like not bent bent but in that sort of U shape? Also, anyway to flatten them as to not trip over them?

Ping spikes for everyone across town (U-Verse)

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:48 PM PDT

In my town, everybody who has AT&T U-verse has simultaneous ping spikes usually in the evening every night. I discovered this one day playing Overwatch with my friends. We all suddenly had a massive ping spike around the same time. I'm used to it at this point and so when I let everyone know my ping was spiking my other friends said they were also experiencing spikes. We figured it was Overwatch at first but then all our Discord pings were spiking too. After asking we realized we all had AT&T U-Verse. The crazy part is we all live on opposite sides of the town (~10 miles from eachother). Would calling AT&T even help anything or are we just gonna get some generic bullshit answer that won't change anything??? Surely they know about it and it would be fixed already.

[UK ISP choice] Which ISPs allow you to use your own router? Or their routers have a passthrough/bridge mode?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:20 AM PDT

Just want to have as much control as possible. Port forwarding, DNS choice, logging/anti logging etc.

If you are unaware standard practice of UK ISPs is to supply you a router and not tell you the required details for you to run your own router.

So which ISPs give you this information and allow you to under their T&Cs (even if it is with reduced tech support)?

Failing that which ISP routers support a bridged mode, so even if I can't use my own as the modem I can for my internal settings?

Update: Looks like only BT and Virgin will give me a fiber connection. seems to me there is a lot of negatives to VM where BT is much more reliable.

    Double NAT Help

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:47 PM PDT

I have a double NAT issue due to our apartments network. My ISP is too incompetent and the public IP they put me on keeps disconnecting. (Aside: the first time they put me on the public IP, I was offline for 6 days. Now, I've been offline since Monday 11PM. )

Basically, I want to online game with my Nintendo Switch, and occasionally multiple Nintendo Switch. Nintendo's solution is to port forward ALL my ports to the switch (lmao what? That can't be right!) What suggestions would any of you have for my problem? Any and all advice welcomed. Thanks!

Cannot Connect to Internet with Ethernet over Coax

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:27 PM PDT

I purchased a Ethernet Over Coax Adapter to help solve my wifi dead spot in my office and am not able to connect to the internet.

The device is connected to the Coax in my office, and with the ethernet cable connected to my desktop and the device, I am able to connect to Unidentified Network but with no internet access.

I have Xfinity internet and the modem/router is connected through another coax in the living room. From the instructions, its my understanding that I should be able to pick up internet access with this setup.

    Am I missing a step?

    Dropping Coax?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:37 PM PDT

So this might just be not knowing how coax is typically ran in the house, but I have a cable drop in my office that I need to move to the closet. I've found where it goes down in the top plate above, but even if I disconnect it and try to pull...it won't budge.

is it possible that it is connected to a splitter further down the wall (preventing me from pulling it up) for it to go into the next room over? Or is coax cables typically split in the attic/crawlspace and then individual drops dropped down?

Sidenote: How much is it typically to get a new cable outlet put in from a cable company? Is there a limit how many times it can be split? (Where is it usually split anyways?)

New build house in UK - advice on wiring for ethernet

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:37 AM PDT

We're (hopefully) buying a new build house, and the builders have offered to have electricians install network cabling, either at a small cost or if I supply the cable, they will just get the sparkies to run it.

I'm thinking of getting an ethernet point in each room next to the TV aerial point (already on the plans) but before I pull the trigger on it, I was wondering:

    • Cat5e or Cat6 - does it really matter for a home/SoHo user? I kinda get the impression Cat6 is harder to terminate and am unsure whether to trust this to an electrician (or do I just get them to run the cables into the wall boxes and get them properly terminated later)?
    • I guess all the cables should run back to a central location - am thinking understairs cupboard. Good shout or should I be considering other locations? No attic unfortunately (upstairs bedroom in roofspace)
    • Run two cables to each room? Or should I just get conduit run to the wallboxes and cable it all later myself?

Think that's all for now - would greatly appreciate your advice.

    Ethernet port disabled? TP-Link AC5400

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:23 PM PDT

Hello, I was hoping for some insight.

I have been using this TP-Link AC5400 router for over a year and things have been wonderful; I use both wifi and all of the ethernet ports in the back to distribute internet all over the house. Yesterday, I added a Linksys 8-Port Gigabit switch to one of the ports of the TP-Link router so that I could add an Arlo Pro system to my network. Everything seemed to work well, but today my mother in law told me her computer stopped connecting to the internet. On her computer, the Ethernet cable was considered "disconnected." I checked with a laptop and it was considered "disconnected" with that too.

I went down to my router and noticed that my second port (the one supplying internet to my mother in law's computer upstairs) doesn't seem to connect (Ethernet cable disconnected) to my laptop no matter what ethernet cables I tried even though the first and third ports did. So instead I took that wire and moved it to the Linksys switch and everything is fine again, but the second Ethernet port on the TP-Link is now vacant.

Is it a configuration issue? Does adding a switch (which supplies its own power) start disabling ethernet ports? Or is that port just fried for some reason all of a sudden? I'm more likely to think that I did something to cause a problem.

    Thank you in advance.

I have a CAT5 cable coming from out of the wall. Is there a difference between crimping an RJ45 end on it versus punching it down into an RJ45 jack?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:54 PM PDT

In both cases, I've wired it to the T568-B standard, even though this is residential.

When I crimp an end on the cable, I don't get a connection. I don't have a spare jack right now.

My question is: Does it matter if I use male or female termination? Will the wires be reversed?

This definitely could be a ID10T error. (I'm also using a $15 toner and probe after all.)

    Thanks.

Edit: I should mention that the cable in question begins at the patch panel in the basement, and is run up through the walls, with the cable just poking out from the wall in the bedroom. The patch panel should be all wired correctly, since I did it in one sitting.

Centrally wired coax in apartment - how to use?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:36 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

I just moved into a new apartment that has what appears to be a central wiring point for cat5e and coax throughout the apartment. Picture: https://ptpb.pw/LTfN.png

I have my modem all hooked up using what I assumed was the "in" line at the top of the panel (the black coax in the top of the picture). I have since moved to hook up a Comcast cable box in the living room so I put a splitter between the "in" line, and ran one line from the splitter to the modem (still works fine) and another from the splitter to the coax jack in the panel labeled appropriately (cable with the gray tightener). This does not seem to work - the box isn't getting any signal from what I can tell.

Since I've never had an apartment wired like this I just wanted to check and make sure I am doing this right before getting a technician to come out here. I've already done common troubleshooting (swapping cables, splitter, tried nearby jacks in case they were labeled wrong and so forth), is there anything else I should try?

Rack-Mounted WAP and Router that supports Sflow for IDS

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 11:51 AM PDT

I have a rack with a couple of servers on it, and I'd like to get a wireless AP and router to go in the rack. I'm not interested in using a home router and attaching it to the rack somehow, but I'm having trouble finding a 1U that can support SFlow. I'm going to be running Hogzilla IDS on one of the servers, and it needs to be able to receive SFlow data from the router. Does anyone have any product recommendations that'll fit the bill? I've seen a few options that would work but they're pretty old. The best modern option is an 8gbps ubiquiti 8port but it does not support SFlow. Would love to hear from someone that has experience with Hogzilla or a similar IDS!

Tp link powerline and new router

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 11:46 AM PDT

I've been looking but can't find anything about this specific problem.

    I have the following: TL-WPA4220KIT And also a 4020KIT

I have a powerline network around my home under the same WiFi name as my router (plusnet if it matters).

Plusnet sent me a new router but now it's messed up my powerline network. I didn't do anything other than switch the router. The extenders seem to work still, sort of. They're showing as part of the new network name. Eg the PC is a wired connection via one of the 4020s and is connected to the internet under this plusnet wifi2. But when I go to the http://tplinkwifi.net it says I'm not connected to the powerline network.

    I don't understand what's happened.

I'm changing broadband provider soon and will get another new router so does anyone have a simple step by step guide what to do with my extenders please? I love how they work but found them a nightmare setting up in the first place!!

    Cable Modem/Router for WOW 500mbps

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 11:41 AM PDT

I was thinking SB6183 and a C7. However, per their documentation the 6183 only does up to 100Mbps?

That, doesn't make any sense. Anyone have experience with this? Seems like that combo should work just fine. Thanks!

Home setup advice needed for gaming & streaming

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 11:15 AM PDT

Hi guys! I'm trying to upgrade my modem/wifi from the basic option that my provider gave me. I called them and they said that I can basically use any modem and router as I please. Currently I have 1GB download speed, so I'm wondering if anyone can recommend me a good modem and router to buy. I did see some posts mentioning that a switch can help too but I'm not sure if this applies to my case. There are 3 computers in the house, 1 smart tv and about 6 iphones connected to the internet at all times.

    Thanks a lot in advance

    Firewall Appliance Guidance

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:55 AM PDT

    Hey r/HomeNetworking

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction with a hardware/security question? I am looking to install Untangle on an appliance or small computer, however I have some concerns about most of the compatible hardware I'm seeing. I'd like to avoid appliances or hardware that's from China. Can anyone give any recommendations for such hardware and is my concern justified? I know that the base untangle appliance offerings are QOTOM boxes.

In my search I've come across supermicro boxes, does anyone recommend any of these or any other brand? I've also looked at intel NUCs but was under the impression that untangle needs 2 nics to work properly and the 2 nic NUCs are way more money and way over kill.

    https://www.supermicro.com/products/system/Compact/

I don't want to spend more than $3-400 on the device as this is of course for my home network. I plan on running, VPN, ablocker, virus blocker, intrusion prevention, and maybe a few other apps.

I've been gathering info for 3 days so if I've missed something or this has been addressed before sorry about the double post.

    Thanks for your feedback!

    Comcast and eMTA Modem

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 10:17 AM PDT

Hoping that someone is able to help, because 5+ hours of Comcast "support" has not helped!

I currently have the Triple Play package from Comcast. We do not want a phone (and actually have no phone lines in the house) but went with the Triple Play because it was less expensive than a Double Play package with the upgrade to gigabit internet.

Before Comcast came to install, I purchased a Netgear CM1000 modem, Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway, Unifi Cloud Key, and two NanoHDs. When Comcast was there, they told me that I could not use my modem because I needed a modem with eMTA for the phone (even though I won't be using the phone). They then made me rent their combination modem/router (the XB6, CGM4140COM).

Has anyone else had this problem before? I do not want to use their router and want to use the setup I had previously planned out. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!
