My computer is getting slow even though it is running Linux. What could be the reason? Posted: 12 Nov 2021 07:19 AM PST I have a 3-4 years old laptop and Windows 10 was very slow on it so I switched to Linux. I have been using Pop OS for 4 months now and it was giving perfect performance and became very fast compared to Windows 10. But since last week I can't help but notice that is has became almost as slow as Windows 10 now. I wonder what could be the reason and how can I fix it? I have Intel core i3 7th Gen with 8GB RAM and 1TB hard disk. I also have Windows 10 dual booted in my laptop (could that be the reason? Although I doubt because it would have given trouble since the beginning if that was the case). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Nov 2021 12:47 PM PST The thing is, I understand that drivers don't work the same way on Linux. I have a GTX 1050ti, 8gb ddr3 ram, i5-2400k CPU, 500GB SSD and 350 HDD, I don't know if any of my hard ware will have problems with Linux in any way. Should I go about this? If so, how? I use my PC mostly for gaming and school work. [link] [comments] |
Setting up auto-connect to VPN Posted: 12 Nov 2021 03:23 AM PST Total Linux noob here, looking for the easiest way to set up auto-connect to my VPN (Surfshark). Did a quick search through this sub but couldn't find what I was looking for. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Nov 2021 08:53 AM PST I restarted Ubuntu and when it booted I see the xUbuntu logo with 4 blinking dots at the bottom. Once that stops, I see a black terminal. Previously, I would see the desktop. [link] [comments] |
What would be the best distro for a minecraft and gmod server? Posted: 12 Nov 2021 02:09 PM PST I was watching Linus talk about Linux and that reminded me that I should probably move my server rig from Windows 10 to some kind of Linux. I'm a stubborn Windows user who is putting up for it so I can play games easiest. I just want something easy to use that I won't forget how to use since I'll be on it at maybe once a week. I have almost no Linux experience, I used Ubuntu 14 on an old ThinkPad I got for free 7-9 years ago. I remeber it working fine since I used it for very light games on steam, light web browsing and video streaming, so I'm basically new to it. I don't want to have to learn command line or get super into it and I'd want a gui while I'm learning. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Nov 2021 11:05 AM PST So, I'm currently running Fedora 35 on my RCA Cambio (model W101 V2). The cameras, touch screen, and auto screen rotation all aren't working because the drivers/firmware needed to run these pieces of hardware aren't included in the stock kernel. I've looked online for Linux firmware that supports the hardware on the Cambio. The only thing I've managed to find is a GitHub page that provides Linux firmware for touchscreen controllers manufactured by Silead (Link to GitHub page). I was able to install the firmware, but the touchscreen and "auto screen rotation" didn't work correctly. I do have the Windows drivers for my Cambo, and I've heard that with certain tools, Windows drivers can be converted to work with Linux. (a program called NDISwrapper is supposedly able to do this). Can I convert my Windows drivers and get them working? [link] [comments] |
Trying to change my keyboard layout to AU MacBooks in Ubuntu terminal? Posted: 12 Nov 2021 09:07 AM PST Hi there; I'm trying to set up an ubuntu VM provision using vagrant, although I'm fairly new to linux. I'm trying to change the keyboard input specifically to the layout an Australian MacBook uses, with specific keys in weird places (`~ next to the z key and the § key next to the 1). However, because of the vagrant provisioning script, I need to do all of this with terminal commands and no other input. I've found various things online about using `load keys`, which didn't work, and I'm trying `setxkbmap`, but I don't think there's a way to get the MacBook version of the Australian keyboard, just the standard/windows one? Any advice or corrections would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:47 PM PST So I just received my Bluetooth USB adaptor, it's a BH519A from MPOW and I tried installing the driver but it doesn't get recognized. It works under Windows so the dongle itself is fine. I'm on Pop!OS 20.04. I am happy to provide more info if needed. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How do I stop fedora from automatically switching to front audio panel Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:17 PM PST My front panel microphone jack doesn't work so I have to plug my mic and headphones in the back. I'd like to be able to keep my speakers plugged in the front panel but sound should come from the headphones (back panel) unless I manually change it (with a gui) [link] [comments] |
How to use an Oculus CV1 on Linux Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:05 PM PST I use KDE Neon and heard that this was possible but I have litteraly no idea of how to do this. I need the oculus but since there is no official Oculus app on Linux I don't know what to do. [link] [comments] |
I need some help with fedora 35 Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:02 PM PST First of all I'm a fan of fedora(and ubuntu) and I want to run it on my system one way or another but unfortunately I'm having problem with installing things(apps,updates,etc...) not that this "things" doesn't install but the speed of doing it gives me a headache.(BTW fedora software store barely loads) I'm pretty sure I have a decent network (It's very good and things such as browsing,watching videos on YouTube,downloading things and etc...) I also have a second problem:Nvidia graphic card... so any chances I could get some help here? (Sudo definitely update literally took more than 2 hours to complete) Thank you who read this ❤ [link] [comments] |
Attempted to add xrdp to startup application list, now stuck in rescue mode. Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:00 PM PST Hey all, I was following a guide to use Xrdp on my linux install, and step 6 involved adding the server to my startup applications list. The command was as follows: My laptop now boots into recovery mode, and looking through the startup log I found these two lines that are probably relevant: What should I do to revert this? All I have tried so far is following the steps in Solus's boot rescue article, though I did not try doing anything related to rollback. Running solus 4.3 on a thinkpad x220. EDIT: The solution was pretty simple after reading this guide:https://www.computerhope.com/unix/uln.htm The command "ln -sf" makes a symlink that overwrites the destination file. Luckily, since the file "runlevel5.target" didn't exist, the symlink I made that used "default.target" didn't overwrite an important file, so all I had to do was remove the symlink using the following: Hope this helps someone if they run into a similar scenario :) [link] [comments] |
Samba not accessible after changing ISPs Posted: 12 Nov 2021 08:59 AM PST Hi guys. Every time I try and access a samba share from my computers it says "Windows could not find \\10.0.0.10 please check the spelling" I think the reason behind this is because I recently changed ISP's and the new one has there IP's like "10.0.0.0" and the old one was "192.168.0.0" Any idea on how to fix? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Problem booting up right after installation Posted: 12 Nov 2021 12:14 PM PST I installed linux mint 20.2 to Lenovo ideapad s314 with ryzen 5 3500U. Installation is in nvme drive. After the installation was completed i restarted the system. It did not boot to the os. Instead it showed these errors: [0.468310] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve [_symbol SB.PCIO.GPP2.B CM5], AE_NOT_FOUND (20190816/dswload2-162) [ 0.468323] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog (20190816/psobject-220) [1.084007] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Unable to read/write to IOMMU perf counter. After that froze with only a cursor showing in the screen. I shutted the computer down after 10 minutes of doing nothing from holding down the power button. It did the same thing. I also installed the os again with same results. Any help would be awesome! Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can't install any theme on Plasma Posted: 12 Nov 2021 12:08 PM PST Hi! I'm pulling my hair out over this issue I can't resolve. Every time I am trying to install a global theme via the default theme browser thing that Plasma comes with, it crashes. I searched online and figured it had something to do with missing packages, since this is a minimal Plasma install over bare Arch. I installed qt5-base, but that didn't help. I've tried 3 different themes with the same results - a crash. I've tried making the installer log the crash details to a file but all it says is something along the lines of "The app encountered a problem, please report it" with no specifics. What should I try next? [link] [comments] |
Timeshift consuming more space than Computer partition Posted: 12 Nov 2021 11:50 AM PST In Timeshift, I only added one daily snapshot and it consumed 38GB. Also I didn't included root and user directory in Timeshift settings. The problem is computer partition which has all files only consumed 24GB space. It's lower than Timeshift single snapshot. Is that normal or what's the problem in here? [link] [comments] |

Encrypting my home directory and swap on Lubuntu 21.04 LTS? Posted: 12 Nov 2021 06:46 AM PST Hi everyone! So I have installed Lubuntu on my laptop and I've used it for a while, loving it so far. However, I didn't encrypt my SSD during installation, or some specifically my home and swap. I've seen a tutorial online for how to do it for Ubuntu but when I tried that on my main desktop with Lubuntu, it didn't work and I had to reinstall the entire OS. Can someone here help me step by step how I;

I had old PC [256MB] AMD Duron 850[OC'd], which Distro suitable for it Posted: 12 Nov 2021 10:18 AM PST Hi couple day ago I got this PC, I want to test Linux on it, first the RAM could be upgraded with to 512MB or 1GB max, but I want to try my luck with this setup first, I had good experience with many Linux Distros, but what's concerns me most is Software compatibility, that's why I'm thinking either of old version of Debian or Ubuntu, Wht software I could try first, mostly will be retro gaming emulators up to PS-1, , I don't need internet browsers or even running latest video codec, MPEG4 will be enough. Honest I don't care if I had to compile the Linux kernel and all software's and use Gentoo + most primitive DE that's all fine to me. [link] [comments] |
