Linux A stop job is running for MySQL Community Server. I am pretty new to linux, installed Mint just a month ago. I had installed MySQL but I am getting this annoying 10 minutes of delay during every shutdown/reboot of my system. I have no idea what this means or is it necessary. How can I prevent this?

    installing ubuntu, mint, centos...

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:06 AM PDT

I have to install some Linux distribution cause of my school projects and I also want to learn some server related stuff, I was thinking about ubuntu, mint or centos. The problem is my laptop is pretty weak so I can't really run a virtual machine, also I was thinking about dual boot system and installing it on my current drive but I don't have a lot of space cause all I got is one 128gb SSD. Is it possible to install Linux on external HDD or maybe on USB and boot the system from there?

PSA: Always remember to keep your system up to date

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:08 AM PDT

    Hello World

I just wanted to drop in and remind you to update your systems on a regular basis. Including the kernel.

Old software is hackable and fixed by updates. That's one major reason there are updates in the first place. And sometimes new features. Or bugfixes.

That in mind, watch here how easy it can be to hack an outdatet linux computer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_40uH_W5K4

LVM partition won't mount, gives error "Structure needs cleaning", e2fsck -f gives no errors, what next?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:47 AM PDT

Running Debian 9, lvm partition is spanned across 7 drives. At this point I am not sure what to do next. The only things I have read is that fsck should fix and should be mountable after that. But I keep getting that error. Is this partition toast? Any way to recover?

A Few Questions About Linux Distros and Desktop Environments

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:59 AM PDT

Hi there, I have a few questions! Thanks in advance!

My first question is about desktop environments: Are they all customizable? And if so, how would you rate the most popular ones (KDE, GNOME, Cinnamon, XFCE, MATE, etc.) in terms of customization?

My second question is: what's a good distro for beginners? And as a follow up, what's the main difference between Arch-based distros like Manjaro and Ubuntu-based distros like Linux Mint?

I've used a few distros recently - I've tried Linux Mint in both XFCE and Cinnamon, I've used plain Ubuntu, and I tried Manjaro with KDE. This also relates to my first question.

I liked the customization with KDE, but Manjaro proved too different from Linux Mint that I got frustrated.

Linux Mint on Cinnamon looked fine, but I had audio issues and also I noticed tiny lag when moving windows around. I don't recall having noticed this in XFCE. However with XFCE I couldn't find a lot of themes I'd like to use.

I don't like Ubuntu, honestly. I like Linux Mint, but I don't like Ubuntu.

As a note, I'm most familiar and comfortable with Ubuntu based distros, so with all this in mind: what would you recommend?

Linux doesn't boot anymore after Windows reinstall (separate disks)

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:12 AM PDT

I added another ssd to my laptop. First time i intalled windows in one ssd. Then i removed windows ssd, and installed linux on another (Solus, uefi mode). I put both together, and there are two bootloaders in my bios. That's what i wanted, everything worked fine.

Today i wanted to reinstall my windows. So i thought i just remove linux hard drive while reinstalling windows to not mess anything up. Installation completed, Windows works. Though when i put both ssds together again, Linux one doesn't boot anymore only Windows will boot. It will not boot even when Windows SSD is removed now. I can see every partition of both drives in windows drive manager. So my question, is it possible to fix this situation without reinstalling linux again?

Help me get Hardware Accelerated Video Encoding going in Ubuntu 18.04

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:58 AM PDT

I do a lot of video encoding, I have a processor that supports it. I know ffmpeg supports it, I know I had it going with transmageddon. I know that Handbrake can be compiled albeit difficultly to utilise Intels media SDK to offer it (Though I would prefer to use VAAPI over QS)

So, who can help? I want a gui video encoder that I can utilise VAAPI. I have reddit gold to give, or I'll paypal someone who can create a super easy to follow installation guide to get this going. Bonus points for a OBS type solution.

    Thank youuuu!

No Wi-Fi connection on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 32-bit

    Hello, everyone.

I've tried everything in order to get Wi-Fi working on my laptop running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 32-bit.

It has both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, but it randomly disconnects.

BEFORE you reply-don't tell me to update the network card drivers, there are no updates available.

Do you have any suggestions/know how to fix this problem?

Trouble installing betterlockscreen Ubuntu 18.04 running i3-gaps

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:04 PM PDT

Here is my neofetch output, just in case you need more information not given from the title.

I tried to follow the manual installation guide for pavanjadhaw's betterlockscreen script. Running betterlockscreen -w dimblur does change my background. However, running betterlockscreen -l dimblur shows this error:

    Got 1920x1080 /home/USERNAME/.cache/i3lock/1920x1080 i3lock: unrecognized option '--timepos=x+110:h-70' i3lock: Syntax: i3lock [-v] [-n] [-b] [-d] [-c color] [-u] [-p win|default] [-i image.png] [-t] [-e] [-I timeout] [-f]

I then used UtkarshVerma's betterlockscreen installer script which returned this (link to pastebin). It does seem that the dependencies are already installed, as referenced by betterlockscreen -w dimblur working. 🤔 (However, I did have to do sudo apt-get install i3lock for that to work.)

What can I do in order to get betterlockscreen working? Thanks for the help.

What woukd you suggest to go from beginner--> advanced?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:30 AM PDT

I'm about to enter 3rd year computer science program at uni. This program so far has focused heavily on software development and more specifically Java. I've personally really gotten into Linux. I would like to learn more about dive into a career that focuses on the kernel and OS but unfortunately they spend limited time on those topics. For the work terms they dump everyone into mobile app positions which I am not interested in at all.

    1. What would you suggest learning on my personal timr?
    2. What type of work should I try and get into for school work terms?

    Thanks guys!

Multi-monitor + KDE + Firefox windows not behaving

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:32 AM PDT

I've got a mult-monitor setup and any combination of browser + DE seems to work fine except for the one I want. Firefox on GNOME is great, as is KDE with Firefox. But when I'm using Firefox on KDE I get some really undesirable behavior.

    1) Firefox open on primary monitor. Open new tab and drag it to secondary monitor (dragging it to the top snap zone to maximize it). The new window does not open maximized

    2) Firefox open on secondary monitor. Open new tab and drag it to primary monitor. The new window will snap back to the original monitor, so now my two Firefox windows are directly on-top of each other.

Is this a known issue and does anyone have a solution for it?

Struggle to install a theme (and a chromium issue)

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:29 PM PDT

    Hello !

Today I installed Ubuntu on my XPS and I've spent some time figuring thing out, I ran into 2 "big" issues.

The first one is I really dislike the top bar and its color so I wanted to use the Flat Remis GNOME theme to get something more modern looking, but when I try to extract the theme folder into ./usr/share/theme it tells me I don't have the permission.

The 2nd one is weird. I got chromium installed, it worked fine, but for some reason now my cursor is really small in chromium and in chromium only. It's linked to the fact I have a 4K panel.

Another small "issue" I have, is I hate that I need to type my password every time I want to change a single thing, is there a way to tell Linux "look, it's me, I'm logged into my session, everything is fine babe." ?

    Thanks a lot !

edit : Solved the theme issue ! See my comment if you need it.

    CPU overclocking itself??

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 01:24 PM PDT

    Running manjaro, cpu is fx8150

I was just browsing some websites and when I looked at conky my cpu was running at 4.2ghz when it's only supposed to be 3.6(only 1 core though). my temps were 75C and higher. Even checked it using sensors and lscpu, it checked out.

I closed all my programs and it went back to normal. My ambient temps are around 25-35.

I have no clue wtf happened, I haven't overclocked my cpu at all. I did play some csgo before but that was over an hour before this happened.

Any clue what potentially happened or why? I'll try to replicate it again.

My GPU is a Radeon HD 6480G - is there a graphics driver for me?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:34 AM PDT

    hey that rhymes

I just installed Lubuntu on an old laptop that has an AMD A4-3305M APU, which has Radeon HD 6480G integrated graphics. (If it would help, the specific model of laptop can be seen here.) This is my first time even using Linux, so I'm not so sure of what to do.

Here's what I've found so far:

    • The latest official AMD driver (fglrx) doesn't support an Ubuntu version past 14.04, and is not supported by versions after 16.04. I'm running 18.04.
    • The open source drivers I can find - Radeon and AMDGPU - don't seem to list support for my GPU.
    • I appear to be running some kind of native driver from X.Org (listed as "X11 Vendor - The X.Org Foundation") - who actually make the open-source Radeon driver - however, my OpenGL Renderer is listed as "(Unknown)" in the Summary of System Information.
    • Not sure if this is relevant, but my VGA compatible controller is: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Sumo [Radeon HD 6480G] (prog-if 00 [VGA Controller])

I have some occasional screen tearing when scrolling I'd like to fix, and I'd like to play some games from Steam or GOG, but I'm not sure if there's even a driver that exists for my setup at this point.

...And since I'm already here asking for help, I have two other small questions:

    1. How can I disable my trackpad? I'm using a wireless USB mouse, and my palms keep touching the trackpad while I'm typing and making it deselect the area I'm typing, or move windows around. It's really a big inconvenience.
    2. How can I completely disable mouse acceleration? I've already turned it down to 1.0 from the desktop, and I think that might have gotten rid of it, but it still seems kind of off to me, and I'd like to know if there's another way of totally turning it off, just to be sure.

Linux in Hyper-V VM - good idea? Also distro recommendation sought.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 05:19 AM PDT

The idea is to run one or more Linux VMs on a Win10 desktop using the built in Hyper-V. Is this a "Just do it" thing, or is there stuff to keep in mind when setting up the guests?

As several of these VMs would likely run at the same time, using a distro with as small a RAM (and hard disk) footprint as feasible is preferred. Requirements are support for sound, video and USB, ability to run Java-apps and surfing. Any recommendations?

Can't install Ubuntu or other distros

I can't seem to install any Linux distro for some reason, but reinstalling Windows worked. I get the notorious black screen after the Ubuntu logo. I'm trying to use my iGPU for host, so that COULD explain why it doesn't work? I already tried adding 'nomodeset' when the grub menu appears and that didn't work.

How can I install all packages "found" by sudo dnf check at once?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:09 AM PDT

I'm running Fedora 27 on my phone using Linux Deploy (very impressive setup, I know /s) and I noticed that not only were some apps not opening, but Network Manager, among other things, wasn't functioning properly. I did a minute of research and ran "sudo dnf check" to see what packages weren't installed properly (to my understanding that's what the command does). It came up with 16 problems, is there a command to install them all at once? I don't want to have to manually install each one (yes, I'm lazy, go ahead and laugh). Thanks!

grub filesystem error, I've been there for 2h

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:35 PM PDT

    Hello !

I recently snagged a Dell XPS 13 and I've been trying to install Manjaro in dual boot with windows 10 pro.

I've created a 90Go partition on the 256Go SSD, downloaded the iso and burned it on a 16Go USB Drive.

I disabled secure boot, went into the F12 launch menu (kinda Bios-like) of the PC, selected the flash drive.

And then, all I have is:

    error: unknow filesystem.

    entering rescue mode

    grub rescue> ls

    (hd0) (hd1)

    grub rescue> ls (hd0)

    (hd0): Filesystem is unknown

    same with hd1.

Please help, I'm dying here, it's almost 3 in the morning x)
