Should I get an iPad or laptop?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:52 PM PST

I can't decide if I should buy an iPad with a magic keyboard and Bluetooth mouse or if I should buy a laptop around 400$. I'm thinking about the iPad because I want to learn to draw but I also need to use it for school. If I get a laptop though, I want one that could be ok for playing games as well. I'm leaning towards the iPad but there might be things that I can't do on the iPad that I need for school. Which one should I buy if my price range is between 400$ - 500$?

How do I find the max read/write speed of my m.2 ssd slot?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:43 PM PST

I'm not sure if the title really makes sense, but I'll try to explain better here. Basically I'm thinking of upgrading the ssd on my laptop as it's fairly small, and I want to get a faster, bigger ssd to replace it. But I don't want to get a super fast ssd that is bottlenecked by my motherboard. So, if the motherboard is limited to a certain read/write speed, how do I find out what that is? (The laptop is an Asus K571GT if that helps)

Is getting an external HDD a good idea?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:42 PM PST

So I have a gaming laptop Lenovo Ideapad L340 and I only have 250 gb and that's bot enough for me and I want to get more storage. But because it's a laptop I can't install a bigger SSD. So is getting and external HDD or SSD a good solution? P.s. I will be using that storage for gaming

I recently repasted my Acer nitro 5 and now it's constantly reaching 95 degrees. Before it was pretty cool, around 80 degrees when gaming undervolted. I had to open it up because the fan was making a weird noise. What should I do?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 01:58 PM PST

I did it three times and all three times the paste was spread out evenly and tightly, I used corsair and arctic Mx-4 they both have similar results, constantly reaching 95 C

    Brands that are reliably good

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 01:11 PM PST

I've got an HP Pavilion x360. It's fine for what I use it for, mainly browsing, uni work and some occasional heavier duty programs (engineering), but nothing too process-heavy.

Thing is though, I'll be finishing up in a couple years, and, assuming I have the funds, I'd want to get something I could rely on to be more of a workhorse for simulations, gaming, etc.

I realise that you guys can't tell me what the best laptop will be for that a few years down the line, but what brands should I look out for? What have been historically the best, and what ones look to be continuing that trend?

Can someone help me? I need a new screen and cover and I don't know where to look.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:54 PM PST

    https://www.newegg.com/acer-spin-3-sp314-51-32z9-mainstream/p/N82E16834316598

So that's the laptop I bought, but I dropped it awhile ago and broke the screen as well as its cover.

Here's a picture from when it happened.

I've worked up some money and would like to fix this issue so that I'm not using it as a desktop, hooked up to a monitor. But I'm not particularly tech savvy. I've looked for awhile and I cannot figure out where to buy them or even if I'm using the correct terminology to find them.

I would really appreciate a bit of help or to be pointed in the right direction.

    Thank you.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:45 PM PST

Alright so, I was on steam just browsing games when I randomly pressed the | and enter keys together, assuming it wouldn't do anything. After pressing it a few times, some random music started playing through my laptop. I tried closing out steam and all running apps but it did nothing. I even turnt my laptop off and back on again, and right when I got back into my account it started back up. Does anyone know how to stop this?

Need help choosing from these laptops

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:38 PM PST

Hi, so I can't decide between these 3 laptops and I would appreciate advices.

    Asus Zenbook 14 UX425EA-BM009T with 14" IPS 1920 × 1080, Intel Core i5 1135G7 Tiger Lake, RAM 8GB LPDDR4X, Intel Iris Xe Graphics

    HP ENVY x360 15-ed0901nc with 15.6" IPS 1920 × 1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i5 10210U Comet Lake, RAM 16GB DDR4, NVIDIA GeForce MX330 4GB

Samsung Galaxy Book Ion with 15.6 QLED 1920 x 1080 display and Intel Core i7 10510U, 8GB DDR4 Memory, Intel UHD Graphics

They all cost almost the same, have 512GB SSD, WiFi 6 and so on. I am honestly not sure with which of these I should go. I need laptop for things like Excel, Word and sometimes calls, some internet and watching movies etc.

Should I buy a new or a used 2in1 laptop?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:36 PM PST

I want to buy a laptop for school. It should be one that is convertible and has a touch screen. I thought about buying a HP Spectre x360 from 2018 used, they're around 700 € in Germany or a new one for roughly the same price. Maybe a HP Envy x360 or a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14. Which one is in your opinion a better value? A new budget laptop or an used premium one? Because i can't charge it in school, the battery should at least be large enough to run Microsoft Onenote for eight hours.

Spilled a smoothie on rental laptop

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:15 PM PST

I checked out a laptop from my university library and I spilled a fruit smoothie on it. Dell Lattitude 5510. I wiped off the smoothie instantly like within 1 second. It was all over the right side of keyboard , but all the keys work fine and the backlight looks normal - they aren't sticky or anything , the laptop is looking / functioning normal. I turned it off and placed it upside down to be safe. Is it likely there will be some future damage? Should I return it now to the library so if it does break down later it isn't pinned on me? I am thinking I may have got lucky that this was a thick fruit smoothie rather than a liquid like water or soda.

    Thanks

    I tried UEFI and legacy..

    Nothing.

that one is detected by the bios but no boot,

The bios detects my old drive in the 6420 but on bios it says : 480gb hhd and my drive is ssd....

RTX 3070 vs RTX 3070 Max-...

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:47 AM PST

Hi! So I found these 2 custom Laptops on PCSPecialist:

    1. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/ionico-15/

    1. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/defianceVIII-17/

The notable difference are the GPUs. Laptop 1 has an RTX 3070, whereas the other has a 3070 Max-Q/3070 Max-Q.

What's the difference between them? The RTX 3070 (no MAX) seems to be more expensive - I. was wondering why?

Advice on selling a Dell XPS L702X

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 06:55 AM PST

Does anyone have any advice on selling this model of laptop?

Core i7 processor, 17.3" screen, 6gb of RAM. Updated to windows 10.

It's roughly 10 years old. Still runs pretty well - a little bit of wait time while it wakes up but nothing really painful. The fan is a bit enthusiastic.

When I've researched online people seem to be selling around the £300 mark - is that about right?

Is it worth paying for it to be refurbished and then selling or selling just as it is?

    Thanks in advance!

    Zenbook UX425EA vs Acer Swift 3 (SF314-59)

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 10:21 AM PST

I'm looking for a budget friendly light content creation ultrabook. I managed to narrow down the options to two devices: Asus Zenbook UX425EA with 16GB soldered ram, i5-1135G7 cpu, intel Iris Xe graphics and cheaper and looks like more powerful Acer Swift 3 with i7-1165G7 Cpu 16 GB soldered ram, Iris Xe graphics and bigger storage.

From what I managed to find Acer performs better but has a tendency to get hot while also having a shorter battery life. Zenbook on the other hand has better screen and thermal performance but performs a bit worse.

I'm looking for any advice as I probably missed something in the research.

    Omen 15 Intel or AMD?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 10:19 AM PST

Hi all, I was looking at laptops at bestbuy and came across the Omen 15. There were two models side by side, one intel and the other AMD.

Model 1: AMD 3rd Generation Ryzen 7, NVidia GeForce RTX1660Ti, 8 gigs memory, 144Hz RR, 512 Gigs SSD. Price: $1,249

Model 2: Intel 10th gen core i7, GeForce RTX 2060, 16 gigs memory, 300 Hz RR, 512 gigs SSD. Price: $1,149

Any thoughts on which one is better? I heard the AMD ryzen chip performs better than the intel 9th gen, but not sure about 10.

Appreciate any thoughts on the models above.
