Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:30 PM PST I dual booted Arch and I want W10 to show up in the GRUB menu at start. I came across this solution However, I'm not sure if I have to mount sda1 or what partition exactly because my partitions look like this: sda1, sda2 and sda3 are all belong to Windows (as far as I know) but I don't know if I have to mount sda3, which, being 242G, is where all my W10 is being stored, or sda1, which I assume is the W10 bootloader (?), or whatever in hell sda2 is for any ideas in which one should I mount? Question from an interested Windows user. Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:29 PM PST So Ive seen a lot of things on Linux for a long time, and Ive kinda wanted to try it out because it feels different, I just have one problem. I dont mind Windows 10 at all, and Im already elbow deep in the OS. Its never given me headaches, my PC doesnt restart at random times, and I install a program and it works. Now looking through different tutorials, my main issue is always compatibility. The games I want to play or the software I want to use isnt always going to run. And I understand there are things like Proton and Wine to hopefully get around these issues at times, but that doesnt completely solve the issue for me. So I guess my main question here is, why else would I want to use Linux? Are there other benefits to using Linux as apposed to Windows that would justify going through what looks to be a pretty big headache just to get myself settled down? It just seems that people's main complaints or reasons for using it, are issues I dont really have with Windows as an OS. Thanks all, looking forward to learning more about this [link] [comments] |

Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:29 PM PST (posted this on r/discordapp already [link to the original post], but didn't get an answer that worked):
I've tried these methods for installing Discord (uninstalling the previous version before installing the next):
I'm honestly so frustrated with this and would love if anyone could help. I know that I stated above that it's not my WiFi but it might be now that I think about it. I have a Netgear A6100 adapter that I used some terminal magic to get it to work properly. This may screw with Discord's connection protocols or something. This could be another path to go down since switching Discord versions doesn't seem to work. Edit: forgot to mention my hardware. Monitors connected to a Dock are not found Posted: 23 Jan 2021 01:40 PM PST I have a Dell WD15 dock and an HP Envy 13 running Linux KDE, and I cant get the 2 DisplayPort monitors to work. I've found the following error in And I see the following in My wife has the same laptop running Windows 10 and it works fine, and my work laptop (a Dell) runs Ubuntu and also works fine, so I'm at a loss as to why my personal laptop doesn't. Posted: 23 Jan 2021 01:07 PM PST It seems so odd. Am I supposed to learn how to navigate without using a taskbar/dock? Perhaps using the workspaces? And what's up with applications having only a close button? Why is the tiling behavior installed by default but nothing from the things I mentioned, stuff that exist in both Mint and Ubuntu? Emerged pulseaudio and rebooted, and then I have just emerged pavucontrol in order to see what's going on, and it says "Establishing connection to Pulseaudio please wait". System freezes when switching HDMI on my monitor, but not when turning it off an on again Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:28 PM PST Hello everyone, not a real noob here, as I use Linux since 2014 or so. Nevertheless I need help. As you read in the title, my system freezes when one thing happens and that is losing the HDMI connection to my monitor, either by hibernation or switching the HDMI 1 input on my monitor back and forth on the same channel, as I use a HDMI switch on HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. Somehow not when simply turning my monitor off and on and not when switching on my monitor from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and back. My monitor is recognized correctly by the system as a BenQ 28". It is the EL2870U. It has 2x HDMI and 1x DP. I use both HDMI ports, the DP port is not used. On HDMI 1 are, behind a switch, my Larkbox Pro and a Chromecast Ultra. On HDMI 2 are several consoles behind a switch. No other system has any problems when switching the HDMI port while usage / output. They all regain their normal output whatever I do. Since this machine comes with Windows 10 pre-installed on the internal 128 gb EMMC, it is a dual boot system. But before someone says that this is the problem: before I added the SSD and installed Manjaro on it, I used Windows some days and the same problems occured there. So this is basically my system: When this freeze happens, my monitor simply shows a black screen (background lit). Then no input is accepted anymore. I tried every more or less known way to regain access to the system and nothing works. Like or after making sure it's active in my system. And it is, 'cause I tried it when the system responded normally and the commands worked just fine. My power button on the Larkbox Pro is configured so that when I press it, the system shuts down. Which works when the system runs normal and is responsive. When the system freezes, this button does not respond in the configured way. I have to brute force a shutdown by holding the power button several seconds. I looked for a lot of thing on the internet and tried one thing that sounded reasonable: changing the order of my HOOKS in my mkinitcpio a little, so that resume comes earlier. It changed nothing for my. It's hard to search for something that specific if you don't have a clue where the problem lies. I know it must be solvable, but I really really need help to get at least an idea what to try or where to look. By now I suggest it has something to do with X, mesa, the compositor or somehow my monitor (EDID or what it is called). Or it might be something in the UEFI / BIOS. If any further information is needed, I will provide it. I appreciate any idea that might just lead me into the right direction. EDIT: I looked up common issues with my compositor xfwm4 but none of those solutions helped with my problem. [link] [comments] |
change directory failed: No such file or directory, logging in with home "/" Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:16 PM PST Distro: Artix Linux Graphics server: Xorg Heyall, I tried to change my username from "lastxchka" into "artemis". So I issued "usermod -l lastxchka artemis" which didn't give me any errors but It still said " /home/lastxchka". So I logged in as root and did "mv /home/lastxchka /home/artemis" but the name hadn't changed, so I rebooted my computer and when It booted up I got " Artemis: /home/lastxchka: change directory failed: No such file or directory " and " Logging in with home = "/" ". And now i can't seem to start Xorg from the TTY... I have no idea what happened, but I f-ed something up majorly.. hopefully one of you here can help out?, thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Dual booting Mint/Windows on two different drivers Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST EDIT: Typo on the title. "Drives" not "Drivers". Hey everyone, My current computer is a basic Acer laptop with a 120GB SSD that I use for Windows and programs + a 1TB HDD for files, but I've been thinking about dual booting Mint alongside Windows to test it out as a primary OS. The thing is, my SSD is full of programs that I use on Windows and can't delete it (work/school), and buying a bigger SSD is not something I can do right now, so I'm thinking about creating a 80-120 GB partition for Mint on my HDD. How do I go about creating said partition on my HDD to run Mint alongside Windows 10? Is it even possible to have multiple systems on different drives? Any help is greatly appreciated :D [link] [comments] |
Shell script: taking user input and applying it to a command line parameter Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:11 PM PST Hello all. Linux Mint user here with a shell scripting question. I am trying to write a Bash shell script that:
What is not working is applying the user supplied time offset. The shell command I am using is: date +'%I:%M:%S %p' -d '+1 hour' It is that 1 in +1 hour I am trying to change with user supplied input. My code: #!/bin/bash # thetime=`date +"%I:%M:%S %p"` # echo "enter a time offset" read offset # echo "the current time is:" $thetime echo "the time with " $offset "hours added is:" date +'%I:%M:%S %p' -d '+$offset hour' Does anyone know how I can apply the $offset value to adjust the time display? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Problem with kern.log growing over and over Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST Hi all, I'm a student, and because I had a pc problem, my college lent me a computer so I could take my classes. To save money, these computers are under linux Ubuntu 18.04. The problem is that I don't know anything about linux at all, and I have no base in code / language, and an important problem arises on the device: The computer has a single 100gb SSd, I only installed bleachbit, zoom, and a few libreoffice files. I very quickly had alerts of full hard drive, to the extreme. After searching, it turns out that it is the kern.log file (in var / log) which is currently 84 gigabytes. I would like to delete it, but it is not possible, or find a way to reduce it. It is filling up at an incredible rate. I thought I saw on the internet that it was necessary to limit its size, or increase the frequency of rotation (with logrotate or whatever), but I very misunderstood and I did nothing for fear of doing nothing. whatever. Could you tell me if you have a possible solution? (knowing that I remember it, I don't know anything about linux at all) Thanks in advance, you would save me! And sorry for bad english [link] [comments] |

Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:25 AM PST I am looking for a Linux distro to use as my daily driver. I am thinking of just getting rid of windows altogether and just installing Linux. I don't know what to look for or what is the most ideal for my situation. I have a couple requirements:
I would like to know why you recommend it as well. Thank you for any help you can provide. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:14 AM PST Simple question and noob here, where do I get a copy of /sbin/init? Vultr VPSes don't give control of most things, so all I can do is upload a custom ISO. What else do I need to do then? Sorry for the stupid question, I'm decent at using Linux but not repairing boot problems. I'm extremely sleepy too, so I can't think well. I'd appreciate if you could give me some hints. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
