Need help troubleshooting who used my home wifi network

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:51 PM PDT

I don't have extra software installed on my router, so not sure if this is possible as the interface doesn't provide this info.

Just went over my limit for the first time ever, by a large amount of GBs. It definitely wasn't me as I've checked usage on all my devices. Have changed password on my router and network as well as renamed everything. My router password was not set to the default, which leads me to believe it was someone I gave it out too.

My password was given out to a guest recently. But they would have to drive from another end of town and sit outside to use my internet, which is super creepy.

I have narrowed the offender down to one possible device based on history in my router and just wondering if there is a way to see the usage of this android device without having the device itself. I know the date the password was given out, so essentially I want to see if I can find that date that device first connected to my network. It is also the only device in my history that isn't mine.

Basically I'm really looking to see if there are other explanations here as well. My neighbours are elderly. Only other possibility is grandchildren of my neighbours with seriously advanced tech skills or a stranger I haven't noticed sitting near my house.

I should add that you generally have to be on my property to use my network as well, I can't get it when inside my neighbour's homes.

Help with possibly DoS Attack issue

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:42 PM PDT

I posted this on tech support but the conversation stalled so I figured i'd try here.

When visiting different random websites (could be ESPN or yahoo) I drop connection for a split second. Could happen 2 times in 5 minutes or not for 2 days. I had my ISP (Comcast) update the firmware in my router, but I did some looking into the logs and noticed several DOS attacks. The two main ones that are appearing are below:

[DoS attack] ICMP Flood from 129.82.138.44 [DoS attack] AIF:Dropped INPUT packet: PROTO:TCP SPT:9143 DPT:8291

I've read it could be malware but nothing is coming up on a scan. Any idea on how to resolve this? Router is a netgear 6300

Help needed to set up TM-AC1900/AiMesh

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:43 PM PDT

    1) two years ago I purchased TM-AC1900, I followed this 23-step instruction (http://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/) to flash, and Firmware:374.43_2-28L2j9527 (Merlin LTS fork). It works fine.

    2) last week I purchase 2nd TM-AC1900, I follow the same 23-step instruction, and flash to FW_RT_AC68U_30043763626.trx, and choose this new 1.0.2.0 US AiMesh CFE.

to setup AiMesh, I have some questions I need your help to clarify:

Q1: for my 2nd router, should I use 3.0.0.4.384_20308-gead790e instead?

Q2: for my 1st router, should I repeat using 23-step? or I can skip most of the step, and simply upload 3.0.0.4.384_20308-gead790e firmware?

    Can you Identify the Problem?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 02:17 PM PDT

    Hello!

I have a few Actiontec ECB2500C's ethernet to coax adapters that have seemed to be working fine up until I 1) moved to a different home, and 2) increased my internet speed (i.e., from 25 Mbps to 100 Mbps). So, the problem appears to derive from the expanse of coaxial lines around the house (maybe?) because if I connect directly to my router via ethernet, I am able to max my connection. Or, there is something wrong with ALL three of my MoCa adapters. I believe the former is more likely. Though, I suppose I could be wrong about that.

There may be something wrong here. I'm not sure how if I am doing things wrong here. Again, I moved some things around, as I am renting the place.

Getting 50Mb/s to anything less than 20Mb/s when Spectrum is advertising 200Mb/s

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:50 PM PDT

Just got off the phone with a customer service rep from Spectrum to discuss this and we did some basic troubleshooting to see why I wasn't getting speeds close to the advertised speed. My setup looks like this:

    PC -> Router -> Modem

Typical home network setup, but the service rep did mention something that the router could be the source of why I'm getting slow speeds since the PC isn't directly connected to the modem. Makes sense as the router has to route information back and forth but it shouldn't cause my speeds to be that low.

The modem I'm using is from Spectrum and it supports speeds up to 300Mb/s and my router is a Netgear WGR614 (kinda old now but still works)

The rep is sending out a service technician tomorrow, but in the meantime is there anything else I can do?

    Apartment network layout

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:42 PM PDT

    Greetings,

I did some research and I think I have my apartment's layout figured out, but I would like some advice on what equipment I would need to make it all work.

My current set-up: ISP (100/10) to Modem (SB6121) to Switch (Leviton 8-port; wired to 7 wall jacks) to Wireless Router (Belkin N600)

I realize this set-up makes the switch pretty much useless as all of the wall jacks (other than the one connected to the router) will not work. I have it this way because I have a couple of things in the room with the router I want to have wired. All of my other gadgets are wireless so it has not been an issue.

My question is what will I have to add or relocate to have all the wall jacks connected to the switch work and be able to connect multiple (at most 4) to one wall jack?

After reading several posts and threads with similar questions, I understand moving the router between the modem and switch will solve the wall jack issue. As far as multiple devices in one room, I think adding a small switch will solve that issue as well.

If my understanding is correct, any advice on a decent switch to purchase would be much appreciated. I know Belkin is not often recommended in this sub, so advice on a decent router would be appreciated as well. Apartment is three rooms and about 1k sq. ft.

Padavan Firmware on Xiaomi 3 - separate SSIDs for VPN/local?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:00 PM PDT

I've finally gotten around to installing Padavan firmware on my Mi 3.

I'm trying to eliminate devices, because I currently have 2 separate devices pumping out SSIDs. One for local internet, one for VPN services (Netflix, HBO.etc) - easier than logging into the router and turning the VPN on and off.

Is it possible to say, turn the Guest wireless network into a VPN only network?

Need help with a creating VPN to make 2 computers on different networks appear to be on the same network.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:12 AM PDT

I have a ThinkPad x201 that I use for work, and then a y520 for personal things. My main goal is to be able to use the Steam in Home streaming feature so I have access to games on the y520 on the x201. In home streaming works fine when the laptops are on the same network, but I don't want to bring the y520 and the x201 with me on business trips. I need to create a VPN that makes the y520 and the x201 appear on the same network, even if they are on different networks. The ThinkPad is running Windows 7 Professional x86-64, and the y520 is running a Windows 10 Home x86-64

Can you help with my problem?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:02 PM PDT

I have some issues with my ATT Fiber service, most notably with spikes in latency every few seconds, and was wondering if this could be a house wiring issue? My speeds are fine but about every 5 seconds or so the latency will spike, then for the next five seconds it will remain relatively low, rise a bit and then spike. This is not really evident on speedtest.net where it connects to an ATT server, but definitely is evident when you are connected to an external source.

    Any ideas?

Do you wait until certain mobile devices start supporting it? Will you be early adopting with the AP/router? Just curious as to how you guys plan your upgrade cycle for the next generation of wireless devices.

Help, 2 access point on same network don't work.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:21 AM PDT

Hi, everyone. I have the following setup: Main Modem-Router (DLink DSL-2750B), Netgear Switch, Asus Access Point (RP-AC56) let's call it AP1, Asus Access Point (RP-N12) let's call it AP2,

The 2 access points, out of the box they are repeater, but Asus let you set them in access point mode.

The 2 access points are attached to the router through the switch.

The router is set to 192.168.1, DHCP pool: 192.168.1.5 - 192.168.1.254, AP1 is set statically (through it's configuration page) to 192.168.1.2, AP2 is set statically (through it's configuration page) to 192.168.1.3, All the DHCP is handled by the router.

The 2 access point have both different SSID and differente passwords.

The router is set to channel 1, AP1 is set to channel 6, AP2 is set to channel 11,

I have the following problem: when i connect for the first time to AP1 everything works fine, if i disconnect and reconnect to AP1 multiple times everything works fine, THEN i connect to AP2 everything works fine, if i disconnect and reconnect to AP2 multiple times everything works fine, THEN i try to reconnect again to AP1 and it doesn't connect AT ALL but if i try to reconnect again to AP2 everything works fine. THEN i try to reconnect again to AP1 and it' doesn't connect at all.

It keeps up with this behaviour until i forget both networks and reboot the pc, and then it's the same issue.

I have tried with an android phone, a ubuntu pc and a window10 pc. it's alway the same.

    Any suggestion?

Blocking certain websites at certain times of the day in my local network

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:49 AM PDT

    Hi all,

This story is a bit convoluted, so bear with me.

I'm trying to set up a way so that at different times of the day various parts of the internet will be blocked to my home network.

Right now we have a very simple setup with just an ISP modem and ISP wireless router.

My initial attempt at doing this was to run a custom DNS server on a Raspberry Pi that would fail DNS lookups for certain domains at different times of the day, e.g, return NXDOMAIN for facebook.com, reddit.com, etc between 8am and 7pm.

This works great, but now I have to configure our phones and laptops to use the RPi as a DNS server when on our LAN. And an even bigger issue is that while I use a company VPN, my laptop will only use the company's DNS server and not the one on my LAN.

So I had another idea, which is to run my own OpenWRT wireless router in front of my ISP's wireless router, in which case I might be able to do some MITM type of shenanigans and achieve the same effect as before.

I've never worked with OpenWRT before and I'm not looking to spend a pretty penny, but I would really appreciate this sub's opinion on a possible course of action.

    Thanks very much!

    Device Segregation on OpenWrt

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:42 AM PDT

Apologies for reposting. The content is the same, but I wanted to change the title.

I'll give an overview of my network to start, then I'll get to my question.

The network: From the internet into the network, I have my modem (Netgear DM200) connected to my router (Linksys WRT1900ACS running LEDE/OpenWrt).

From my router I have 3 ethernet outputs, one to my desk, one to my bedroom, one to my living room. I also have 2 wireless networks (2.5Ghz and 5Ghz, same SSID).

At my desk, I have a small 5-port switch (Netgear GS205). My Desktop, and a Raspberry Pi 1, are connected to this switch.

In my bedroom, I have nothing connected, but could connect my printer (Brother MFC-J6250DW, currently wireless).

In my living room, I have my TV (Samsung UE32J5600), and a PS4 (Currently Wireless). I am considering putting a switch in here.

Wirelessly: I have my Phone, a chromebook, a netbook, a laptop, a printer, an Echo Dot, and my PS4.

At some point, I may add more devices/servers/etc to any part of the wired network. I may also have guests connect wirelessly.

Question: I want to be able to keep certain devices on the network separate from the others. For example, I want to allow the TV and Echo Dot to be able to connect to the internet, but not see any other devices on the network.

Also, The Raspberry Pi has a port open to allow remote SSH access. I want to allow access to the Raspberry Pi from my "Trusted" devices, but I don't want the Pi to be able to access my "Trusted" devices.

Ultimately this means I want at least 3 Partitions: a "Secure Trusted", an "Insecure Trusted", and an "Insecure Untrusted".

Can this be achieved with just different Subnets (and iptables routing rules)? Or do I need to specifically use vlans?

How do I go about configuring this correctly in OpenWrt? Can I partition based on MAC address?

Will this work with both IPv4 and IPv6?

    Many Thanks

Edit: here is a basic diagram showing what I want to achieve

100 Mbps through modem = 6Mbps through computer?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:31 AM PDT

I recently upgraded my router to a Linksys WRT3200ACM for speed capability (also because it supports open source). I was so frustrated by my speed my last resort was to wire (cat7) my computer directly to my modem. (100ft cable) I've noticed that when my computer is connected directly to my cable modem, I am about to pull speeds between 11Mbps and 12Mbps, but when it is connected through my router, I am only able to pull speeds of 6Mbps even when all the other devices are disabled. At first I told myself that it wasn't that huge of a difference and 6 is still pretty fast (I used to only get 100-200kBps). I researched and looked up the difference between mBps and mbps wondering if it was my cable company's language that was confusing me. Why is my router slowing me down. Is there some sort of solution that will get me closer to 12Mbps. I thought about hooking my internet connection through a router, to another router that would link my network to the router that my internet connection and main pc is on; but that doesn't seem like it would be a solution.

Most efficient and effective way to disconnect all but one wireless device on the router?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:54 AM PDT

Currently I have about 7 wireless devices connected to my RT-AC68U and looking for an efficient way to disconnect all wireless devices except my phone. My main purpose for this is to temporarily maximize the wifi signal to my phone when needed so I'm hoping for a solution that is effective in completely eradicating all possible interference. With that said, what's my best bet?

    1. Mac filtering. Seems like the safest bet but my MAC filters always without a doubt end up as a giant clusterfuck and eventually being abandoned altogether.

    2. Guest network. Putting all my other devices on the guest network and toggling it on and off as needed.

    3. Wi-Fi Block List through the Asus app. Perhaps the most convenient method but I suspect this doesn't completely disconnect the devices from the network? Blocked devices still seem to appear in the network map but are they actually causing any notable interference in this state?

Am I overlooking any other possible solutions?

Looking to replace BT HomeHub router. What do I need to know?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:00 AM PDT

I have an average connection of 18Mbps down and 1Mbps up here in the UK where my ISP is BT. However, I've been facing major issues recently when online gaming where I get frequent ping spikes which kick me out of my sessions.

I believe this is due to the router (HomeHub 4) having no QOS, as it seems to lag (lasting up to 1min with up-to 3k pings) when other people in my house use their devices (namely phones).

Therefore, I'm planning on buying a new router. I've found the TP Link VR400 to be an appropriate option. Is this fine?

Looking to get a good router.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:36 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a wifi router for a medium sized house. This is what I've found so far. Iv read that it has poor MU-MIMO functional. Will this matter if there are only going to be 4 people using the network (around 8 devices though)? The current router I'm using is a stock ISP provided router but it has really poor connectivity in certain places in my house, which is why I'm looking to upgrade.

Edit: not looking to wire ethernet cords to access points in my house, just want a single router.

I have just purchased VDSL (15 down)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:21 AM PDT

Hi, I am getting low speeds maybe 5 max, I have the Smart RG VDSL2 gateway SR505N... There is a technician coming to my home to set up... however I received the modem via FEDEX early and I plugged it in and to my surprised it connected I have Windows 10 Surface Pro 4 and it is wireless, I have no way to connect to the modem / router directly, no ports for that on my laptop. Now they did mention that the technician is coming to set up and they spoke of "dry loop" so maybe that needs to happen for I to get "advertised" speeds, I am concerned as I live in a rural area... and I suspect old building / country that the phone line coming in "sucks" and that this will be the best I can get ? or that the setting in my router aren't optimized, I tried login into the modem, however default passwords to get in aren't working.... please advise ! Thanks for your help...

    Looking for a little advice

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 08:05 AM PDT

Ok so I know this sub heavily favors the ubiquity edgerouter, but I currently own a nighthawk r8000. After cruising the sub a bit I'm heavily considering switching to ubiquity. My question is how much of a difference would I notice if I'm only in a 300/20 network? Everything in my house is WiFi as I don't have the ability to run Cat6 all over because I rent. I'm fairly competent when it comes to networking so I'm not afraid of the setup.

My biggest complaint about the nighthawk is the simple and outdated software. But overall it's not a deal breaker. Performance improvement is what I'm looking for.

losing tcp traffic when iphone is on home network?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:46 PM PDT

Hello networkers, I have a weird problem with my home network. I have been having some home network problem lately and I am not sure what is causing it. I have been capturing with wireshark and it seems like I am losing a lot of TCP packets while an iPhone is on the network. I can't reach websites and TCP packets keeps getting retransmitted on my laptop and android phone and I keep experiencing network drops. I have about 7 connected devices (android, xbox, laptops, tv, chromecast etc.) and even when I stream media and download on more then one, my router holds up and I none of the devices lose connection. But when I have an iPhone on the net my other devices can't reach websites or get any signal. What might be the problem? Does the iPhone has any priority on home networks somehow? I am confused here. any suggestions might help!
