Don't know how many people here are developers, but going from MacOS to Windows as a developer has been amazing.

    Posted: 27 May 2022 05:13 AM PDT

WSL2 has come a LONG way; development on Windows feels pretty much the same as on MacOS, but, unlike with MacOS, I can also play games the same device. It's so convenient to have the best of both worlds in one machine!

Not really a constructive post, but I just wanted to celebrate how amazing Windows is for developers these days. Huge shoutout and kudos to the amazing team over at Microsoft for making all of this possible!

EDIT: Hey, all! I came back to Reddit with an amazing amount of responses (and upvotes!). Thank you for that :)

There's a lot to respond to, but I have read everything, so I'm going to collectively put my response here (and I apologize if this is lazy!):

I understand now that WSL2 has its ups and downs, especially from some of the more details responses left below (to which I'm very grateful for). For what I am doing right now, WSL2 works amazing, and the convenience of being able to game and develop on the same machine is just such a big thing for me. But, who knows? This might just be a step in my development journey, and I might either go back to MacOS or transition to Linux entirely. Either way, I'm enjoying the ride right now! Like with any OS, there will always be ups and downs, so I think the thing we should consider the most is which one makes us the most happy.

    Have a wonderful day, y'all! :)

Announcing the Microsoft Store App Awards Winners!

Windows backwards compatibility is probably more ridiculous than you think it is. I did some experiments with running Windows 3.1 software on modern systems.

Komorebi (an automatic tiling window manager for Windows) v0.1.9 is out!

    Posted: 27 May 2022 01:44 PM PDT

    Hello friends!

I posted an update for this project some time ago, and I'm back today to announce quite a big release and also highlight some of the cool work that has been completed since the last update!

    https://github.com/LGUG2Z/komorebi/tree/v0.1.9

If you want to see what komorebi looks like in action, there are two great little video demos from komorebi users on the project readme.

If you're interested in trying out komorebi for the first time, it is now easier than ever as you can now install it directly from the extras bucket with Scoop!

For me personally, the coolest new features in this period have been:

    • Being able to define custom layouts in YAML and JSON, this is really awesome and has been a total game changer for me, and in many cases space can be used way more efficiently than a traditional BSP layout on wider-than-average monitors. There is also a visual custom layout generator that you can play with to generate the JSON for your custom layouts!

    • Being able to set rules to automatically change between different built-in and custom layouts depending on the number of windows open on a screen. This is one of those things that seems so simple in retrospect but I haven't seen it implemented in other tiling window managers. Maybe you think BSP works well with up to 3 or 4 windows on the screen, but once you go over that, you want the workspace to switch to a different custom layout that you think is more space-efficient and productive for a higher number of windows. No problem! Just tell komorebi which layout to switch to once a certain threshold of open windows has been reached!

    • A push-based event subscription API that allows other applications to subscribe to the latest komorebi events. This is in particular super useful if you want to write your own status bar. yasb is a great example of a status bar written in Python that subscribes to the latest events from komorebi to always show the most up-to-date information about workspaces and application windows to the user.

    • You can easily export a JSON schema file to help you generate types in any language which makes working with updates from subscription events a breeze thanks to the excellent schemars crate.

    • Introducing a decoupled library of application-specific fixes in YAML that can be used to generate the majority of configuration options for applications that are uncooperative-by-default. The goal is to eventually just be able to run one command to generate 99% of your configuration, leaving you to focus on the other 1% which should essentially be your preferred shortcuts and workspace layout options.

If you have any questions about using Rust to develop for Windows, writing your own tiling window manager, or even anything you spot in the project code that you'd like to discuss I'll do my best to answer in the comments.

    Tech Support misguided me

    Posted: 27 May 2022 01:34 PM PDT

So today I found out that Microsoft will cease to send Security Updates to Windows 8.1 and as a child of parents who are more naive than a toddler I decided to do them the favor of upgrading their Laptop to Windows 10 after checking of course if the machine meets the minimum requirments. While reviewing a forum about how to the upgrade I saw someone say that Microsoft no longer does free upgrades but if you ask nicely they might help you out.

So of course I did contact chat support and I connected with this helpful rep who assured me I can still upgrade to windows 10 and even guided me on how to find my product key and after asking him to ensure that we were talking about the same thing he assured me I can use my product key to upgrade!

I run into a roadblock so I had to contact support again and I told them what I was doing and they assured me that there's no such thing as free Upgrade to Windows 10 and that I'll have to purchase a key but it's so frustrating because I spend well over 3 hours setting it up for nothing. What up with that MS support?

I’d like to interject for a moment.

    Posted: 27 May 2022 04:29 PM PDT

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Windows, is in fact, Microsoft Windows, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Microsoft plus Windows. You see, windows is used everyday and used by millions, even billions of people use it for many different things like in your home, business and even server! Microsoft introduced an operating environment named Windows on November 20, 1985, as a graphical operating system shell for MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer (PC) market with over 90% market share, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984. Apple came to see Windows as an unfair encroachment on their innovation in GUI development as implemented on products such as the Lisa and Macintosh (eventually settled in court in Microsoft's favor in 1993). On PCs, Windows is still the most popular operating system in all countries. However, in 2014, Microsoft admitted losing the majority of the overall operating system market to Android, because of the massive growth in sales of Android smartphones. In 2014, the number of Windows devices sold was less than 25% that of Android devices sold. This comparison, however, may not be fully relevant, as the two operating systems traditionally target different platforms. Still, numbers for server use of Windows (that are comparable to competitors) show one third market share, similar to that for end user use. As of October 2021, the most recent version of Windows for PCs and tablets is Windows 11, version 21H2. The most recent version for embedded devices is Windows 11, version 21H2. The most recent version for server computers is Windows Server 2022, version 21H2. A specialized version of Windows also runs on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S video game consoles.

Windows updates crashes laptop, bullies user into changing/buying stuff

    Posted: 28 May 2022 02:33 AM PDT

(This is a discussion post, not a technical support request.)

This happens every few months with me. I turn on my laptop to find a BSOD. Once I restart, I see a "Let's finish up setting up this device" screen (which means it crashed due to a recent forced update - in this case, security update 1.367.605.0). Windows then bullies me into changing to Edge and buying Office, using dark patterns of UX design.

I'm not a conspiracy theory enthusiast, but it's almost like Windows intentionally crashes my laptop in order to force me to go into the above cycle.

(I usually just put my laptop to Sleep in order to save time restarting/reopening apps, which delays Windows updates. I do understand the importance of updates. I do not think this justifies Windows forcing an update and crashing my laptop.)

I wish we had more choices of OS, with a common app/file format between them, so people had more choices. Currently you either use Windows or you need to do a complete lifestyle change to Apple, Linux or something else (living in the woods?).

    Let's unbox a socket 370 (intel 810) PC in 2022!

On last week, I decided to build a vintage desktop PCSo that I gave the spec list to an online store. Finally, received on 25 May

Install the graphics card driver is a bit tricky, need to separate 4 part into 1.44M floppy, copy to this vintage PC and unzip it.

The network function also works! But the file download speed is only 50KB per second.

Has the mouse -> cursor translation changed since Windows 7?

    Posted: 27 May 2022 07:16 AM PDT

At my desk, I have an older PC I use for audio work that's still running Windows 7 (things work and remain consistent every time I turn it on - all my Windows 10 machines get a new update or do something weird, breaking things) and a newer machine on Windows 10 for various other tasks. I also have a dock for my work laptop, which is on Windows 10 as well. I have a 4-computer switch I use for the mouse and keyboard.

The mouse/cursor behavior seems consistent between my Windows 10 machine and work computer, but when I switch to my Windows 7 machine, the behavior is just a slightly bit different. It's extremely subtle and I can't pinpoint what exactly is different, but it's different enough that it takes a couple minutes to completely adjust. I have the mouse tracking settings set the same between the machines (maybe the pointer's "half-speed" in Windows 7 just isn't the same as in Windows 10?) and the mouse is the same with the same profile for all machines. So, has Microsoft changed how HID inputs are handled since Windows 7?

First time posting here and unsure what flair to use, so please let me know if I should change it.

Programs Not Showing Up After Refreshing

    Posted: 26 May 2022 09:21 PM PDT

So I just Refreshed my windows and after it is done refreshing, every app I got on D disk is not showing up on my control panel? I can still enter them and play them. they all still exist in D file, steam is still there but none of them shows up on my control panel. I tried verifying files of the games on steam, but that didn't make it show up either. Steam itself doesn't show up on control panel either but i can still access it

Is "Backup Settings" disappearing? And redirects to the old "File History"?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 07:54 AM PDT

I saw it on a client PC today on 21H2 Home.

Typing "Backup" in the search no longer brings up "Backup settings" as a choice, similarly you can't find it if you search from within the Settings window.

"File History" was still there, under the old Control Panel UI.
