    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Should I upgrade my 12 year old power supply?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 06:13 PM PDT

I purchased a Corsair HX850 850W power supply in 2010. I've probably reused this old power supply through a few PC builds over that time.

But now, I'm upgrading my 1080 Ti graphics card to a 3080 Ti. 850W should still be plenty for even the new GPU, but I read somewhere that power supplies last about 10 years-ish. Should I really be thinking about upgrading my power supply? Am I putting my PC components at risk if I don't?

    5800x from friend or 12700k

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 04:46 PM PDT

I've got the rest of the components, such as a 4000x case, 32gb of ddr4 3600 ram, 2tb nvme ssd, RTX 3080 and 850w PSU.

I've left the CPU and MoBo for last. My friend has a 5800x and B550 Tomahawk he's willing to sell to me for $600 for the bundle, but was also looking at the 12700k/MSI Z690-A combo which would run me about $800 plus tax here in Canada.

I'm mainly looking at gaming in 1440p with a hint of streaming here and there when a buddy wants to check out a game. Either of these options would be paired with the Corsair iCue H115i Elite AIO.

Could either use the extra ~$200 towards a 1440p monitor or keep my 1080p 144hz and get the 12700k.

Was trying to keep the entire build under $3500 and already am at $2400 for everything else. I know 1440p monitors are roughly $500 here in Canada for a good one.

Let me know what you would do and if the 5800x would be enough for me or worth getting the 12700k now rather than upgrading to it later when there's nicer motherboards and sales.

Is a 700W PSU enough for an RTX 3070 Ti?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 12:05 AM PDT

Planning on purchasing an RTX 3070 Ti sometime in the future.

Was wondering if my current 700 PSU is enough to power it as I've heard it consumes more power than it advertises due to its inconsistent power spikes.

PCPartPicker estimates a wattage of 523W.

BUDGET PC CHOICES FOR MY MOTHER.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 03:24 AM PDT

Building my mother a pc, going budget but i want good parts

USE: general browsing and basic tasks

Decision: im trying to decide on going either with a 5600g or trying to get an i3-12100... perhaps even an i5-12400.

Notes: this is not really a gaming pc, as i have my own and she has no interest, however.. i have thought about down the line slapping in a 3060ti and just reselling the whole system.
but for now will only be a light work station, using the integrated graphics.

I have read that the Vega 7 integrated graphic are actually pretty damn good.. and that the intel uhd 730 is alright.

but ive been wanting to go with the newer, (and cheaper) option of the i3-12100. Any thoughts?

Also im building a whole system.. so any of your thoughts on availability of compatible parts (obviously not ddr5, too expensive) are appreciated.

(mostly talking about mobos) i know am4 has been around awhile so i am sure there are some great budget options going with the 5600g.

I'm curious of anyone's thoughts on budget Lga1700 boards.

What can I build for around 400 dollars (No dedicated GPU yet)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 07:21 PM PDT

Simply, what are the best parts I can purchase for around 400 bucks for recent games that can run with mid-level graphics settings?

I do not want to buy a GPU yet, as I still feel that they are way to expensive for now.

I understand that I might not be able to do anything good. but if I can get decent performance out of 400-500 dollars, I would be more than fine with it.

    B350+ CPU upgrade

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 03:03 AM PDT

Hey guys, right now i've got a rig with a 3060TI and 4*8GB of 3200 MHz ddr4, however it's getting bottlenecked hard by my Ryzen 1600. I was thinking about getting a 5600X but I couldn't find if my ASUS prime B350 plus mobo will support it with the upcoming bios updates or not. In case it won't get support, what would be the best combination of CPU and motherboard around 400 euro's, it doesn't matter to me if it's AMD or Intel. (For reverence, I mostly play games like squad and DCS)

    Corsair 2021 CX650M PSU

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 03:01 AM PDT

I'm doing my first build, have already purchased everything and waiting for the supplier to ship it.

    I'll be running a i512400f, MSI MAG Mortar B660 DDR4 WIFI and 3060ti.

Should I have splurged on a better PSU? will this one safely work?

PC Suffers from crashes with new RTX 3070 TI without even being pushed too hard.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 05:30 PM PDT

Hey buildapc, I'm sort of at the end of my tether here and at the limits of my own knowledge of PCs even though I am only somewhat of an amateur so I don't doubt there's an easy fix here.

so recently I had to essentially rebuild my pc, I woke up in the morning one day and my PC had died in the night. it was a fairly lacklustre PC but the only parts to survive were my GTX 1060 6GB and HDDs. so I used this as an opportunity to upgrade.

    The new parts were:

    -Ryzen9 5900x

-MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX Motherboard

    -32GB DDR4 4000 Corsair vengeance RAM

    -Thermaltake Madrid 850W PSU

-and I also still used the GTX 1060 6GB for a while before my upgrade

so all of this was put together with "minimal" issues on start-up but eventually we got there. the PC performed well, no issues of note with long 6+ hour gaming sessions. at the time I was playing through RDR2 set to the medium preset. I had a good 40-60 FPS most of the time and never suffered any other issues. however the issue began when it came time to finally upgrade my GPU. For a "reasonable" price that I'm not entirely proud of at this point in time I got the RTX 3070 Ti 8GB AORUS.

when I installed it the card was great. the performance boost was incredible, something I'd wanted for years. however after sitting with it for a while it started crashing my PC. again I was still playing RDR2 and I had cranked the graphics all the way up so I thought I may have just pushed it too hard. so I turned them down and again ran into the same issue. no matter what they were set to it would always crash. so I tried other games which don't even push the PC too hard and again the same issue, crashing after 20-30 minutes of play. of my 300~ steam library I can play maybe 5 games without issues. I've looked at the GPU temps and they don't seem to be anything out of the ordinary, anything from 50-80 degrees Celsius at the time of crashing. But something I did notice which I thought was strange was that when it crashed the RGB on the RAM would stay lit and the PC wouldn't turn back on unless I'd disconnect the power from the wall and reconnect it again essentially forcing the RAM to switch off.

thanks for reading this far, like I said I am somewhat of an amateur and this is the first time that I'm really doing any of this independently because I did have the help of my dad before but I just want the chance to do this myself now. however its debatable whether reddit is "by my self" but you lot are just voices in my head anyway.

Want to make sure this build isn't trash before buying it

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 11:31 PM PDT

I'm planning on building a new PC and stealing a couple parts from an old build. Specifically, I already have a GTX 1060 6GB that I plan to use until I eventually upgrade it down the line. I also have the RAM, but that's a bit less interesting. So the plan is:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Pure Rock 2

    GPU: GTX 1060 6 GB

    Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE

    RAM: Corsair Vengance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600

    SSD: Samsung 980 1 TB m.2-2280 NVME

HDD: idk some 1TB thing i'm taking from my old build

    PSU: EVEGA BQ 500 W 80+ Semi-modular

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower

Wireless Network Adapter: Gigabyte GC-WBAX200 PCIe x1

    PC Part Picker list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G2hkXy

Funny shirt (I will wear it while building the PC [need recommendations on funny pants as well]): https://www.amzn.com/dp/B07GXJSCMS/

Yes, I am aware that the USB-C port on my case won't be useable, but I don't care too much. Updating the BIOS won't be an issue either. I don't have any plans to overclock. I'm not working on a strict budget here, but keeping it near or under the current price would be best.

If there's any changes you'd recommend, please do tell. If not, also do tell and stroke my ego for having assembled such a perfect lineup of parts. I'm particularly unsure about the motherboard and cooler. The motherboard I've chosen has two m.2 slots which will be nice for when I transfer my files from my old PC to this one, but will also be useful if I decide I need more space. As for the cooler... Idk it has quiet in the name and I liked that (also the reviews were solid). I also considered the Noctua NH-U12S Redux, although the pure rock is a bit cheaper.

As for the eventual GPU upgrade, I'll worry about it later tbh, shopping for GPUs right now just makes me sad. I already have some RAM to put in the old pc when I steal it, and I'll return the graphics card once I upgrade and probably give that build to my sister or something.

Thanks for reading this far, and thanks in advance for any advice!

How much will RAM impact gaming performance?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 11:49 PM PDT

My current pc is quite a low-end pc but it works decently for the price i paid. I took my old pc and upgraded it a bit, these are my current specs:

    CPU: Intel i5 3470 Gpu: Nvidia Gt 1030 (GDDR5)

My motherboard is my current issue, it is very old and only supports DDR3 RAM. I currently have 8GB (1600MHz) DDR3 RAM.

It runs games like Battlefield 1 and Titanfall smoothly at 1366×768 on medium settings.

Other games that my pc meets the minimum requirements for have given me stutters and lag, and I am wondering if this has anything to do with my terrible RAM.

Would it be worth it to get a newer motherboard and 16gb DDR4 RAM?

    PC black screens whilst gaming!

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 01:40 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I've been having this issue on and off now for quite some time. I've rebuilt my PC 2 times to solve the issue with the GPU staying the same. I recently Sent in the GPU for warranty as I thought that was the issue, but I've been told that it's not faulty. I Originally had windows 10 Pro and upgraded to 11 Pro when it became available. Any help would be super appreciated! Thanks :)

The black screening only occurs when I'm playing games for over an hour. My audio will freeze, and the monitor will disconnect as if it isn't recieveing video input, then my GPU fans will ramp up and the PC will restart. From the temperatures I monitored whilst playing games, the GPU rarely exceeds 70 ° Celsius. I've also replaced the HDMI cable, and have tried completely wiping storage drives and DDU for video drivers.

I've Tested my CPU and memory with Prime 95, ran the "large FFTs" for 4 hours and the "Small FFTs" for 4 hours, CPU temperature never exceeded 68 ° Celsius.

Here's the XML File from event viewer: https://imgur.com/w66qOln

What to upgrade? Processor vs Monitor

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 03:01 AM PDT

I am wondering what should I upgrade and maybe anybody here could advise whats more worth for me as both of these options are similar in terms of price.

    My rig now:

    Monitor AOC G2460VQ6 1080p 24' 75Hz

    RTX 2060 i5-8400 32GB RAM

What I am aiming to buy:

    Monitor 1440p 27' 144Hz

    or

    Ryzen 5 5600x

The issue with monitor is that my GPU is not too powerful anymore so its wont keep up with newer games in 1440p high settings so I might get like 45FPS in AAA games.

For the processor I will have to buy new motherboard and I am pretty sure Zen4 processors are coming sometime soon so it might be a bad purchase right now.

    Beginner pc building question

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 02:00 AM PDT

Hi, read some guides about pc building recently, but never actually built a pc. Have some questions about pc building.

    1. Is there anything to take note when building a multiple monitor (2-3) pc? Like would I need to increase the spec power supply cooling system etc.

    2. Is there a point in having an integrated graphic card in the cpu if I'm alrdy planning to get a gpu? Like will the integrated graphic card make the quality worse or cpu slower etc.

    Thank you!

Should I do a fresh install of windows 11?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 01:49 AM PDT

I upgraded from windows 10 to windows 11 a while ago, and I got a new graphics card (used DDU to remove the drivers).

I don't seem to be having any issues, but I was wondering if it is good practice to do a fresh install, rather than just upgrading windows.

    What do people suggest?

First PC build attempt that's open for change, but 100% chosen by myself, using knowledge gained through various sources since I was about 6 or 7. Need feedback for comfort; Is this build sensible/able to provide a great experience in most modern games/tasks?(60+fps,high quality at 1080-2k,mods,)

If theres any swaps that could make this better without affecting the cost too crazy, please recommend hope its not too bad.

    Will it work?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 10:49 PM PDT

So, I currently have a very ,,solid'' PC (except for that I have a Quadro 2000K which is actually very bad and outdated), but I know it'll could NEVER run Elden Ring (the game I'm upgrading my PC for). So I've decided to work a summer job (a very hard one, but with a huge payment) and buy the components I need. I'm buying 16GB RAM (Currently have 8 or 2x4 RAM), CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K and a GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB. And so I'm really sceptic if it will run + I've heard there are different CPU slots so I don't know should I just buy the parts or speak with a professional before buying the parts. I know, the reason I'm sceptic is stupid and the requirements are on Steam and Can I Run it, but I've newer bought such a new and strong game so I'm really sceptical.
