Home Networking Deco m5 breaking my heart

Home Networking Deco m5 breaking my heart

    Deco m5 breaking my heart

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 03:49 AM PDT

I have 1 GB internet and three Deco M5 around my house, a couple of months ago I noticed my Wi-Fi speeds were pretty bad so I looked into it and ended up changing all the cabling going to the decos to cat6, this seem to have solved my problem and I managed to get the Wi-Fi speeds up to about 500 MB.

The last couple of days I've noticed the speeds are pretty slow again, no cabling has changed everything is the exact same but the decos seem to be cutting my Wi-Fi speed at 100mb...what the hell is going on this is driving me nuts I've tried rebooting decos, plugging in and out cables, everything.

My wired speeds are about 950mbs.

    Does this check out?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:58 AM PDT

So I've been plagued with horrendous internet speeds in certain areas of my home. Most areas I get a solid 150-300 mb/s (not blazing fast but I pay for 200 mb/s so I can't complain) but some areas, mainly the living room where my TV and PS4 are, get literally less than a mb/s. It's infuriating and I couldn't figure out why… until just now. I realized that the position of the router is such that a theoretical line of sight between the router and the TV / PS4 cuts through 2 exterior walls. My siding is aluminum… If I stand just 2 feet away from this position so that the angle no longer causes the line of sight to cut through the siding, my internet speed jumps from 1 mbps to 200+. I can't really change the router position, but can't I just buy a mesh system with one router and one node and place the node in my living room where the LOS doesn't cut through the exterior walls? Seems like a simple solution that would fix this really frustrating problem.

    RT-AC68U constant issues

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 08:40 AM PDT

On my RT-AC68U I have to use a VPN to connect to certain sites which seems random and some of my phone devices cannot connect at or if they do, they just get no connection even though it say they are connected. I have already tried setting DNS to google in both the router settings and on individual devices.

There is no mention of this issue on this router anywhere else on the entirety of the internet so I'm not sure what to do to fix this.

Best Router Specifically for Gaming? Least lag

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 08:06 AM PDT

Hey all! I'm currently using a ISP router and modem, not a huge fan of them but it got me through. Looking for a new Router that will do best when it comes to gaming, Fast speeds and least amount lag. I know of a few companies but wanted to see if there were any other ones out there! Thank you

    ASUS ET8

See image in comments. My RSSI ranges from -41 to -55, which I think isn't too bad. The RSSI is higher on my second floor. Thinking of adding RP-AX56 in my second floor hall, which would be around 10 feet from my node. Overkill?

    Budget friendly mesh system.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 12:20 AM PDT

Apologies for asking something that has been answered many times. I am very new to networking and my brain is fried from reading so many posts.

My download upload speeds are around 500 up/down when on wireless. And 900 via ethernet (only possible to do this for one device)

The router is located downstairs in possibly the worst room in the house as it is fully surrounded by external brick walls with no option to relocate it so I was wondering if I mesh system would help to improve signals throughout the house.

Currently the main uses for it would be a gaming rig upstairs close to the router but the speeds on the device are around 40 up/down and a smart TV downstairs in the living room where the signal frequently cuts out and is very weak with the usual phones and other hand held devices being connected throughout the house.

I'm not looking at spending a fortune maybe around £150 for this price I have seen the Google WiFi mesh for £140 or the tp link m5 for £150.

From what many have said eero seems to be highly recommend however from what I have seen the mesh systems are typically more than I was intending on spending.

Gigabit Home Network Advice & Router Question

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:48 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am hoping for a bit of advice. I have purchased a new home and would like to set up both a strong wired and wireless network. I will be getting Gigabit service from the ISP who will provide the modem.

Downstream of that I assume I need a wired router, correct?

After the wired router, I purchased one of these switches for each floor of the house so that I could split off from there and run ethernet cable to wall plates in a few rooms on each floor.

I also ordered a TP Link Wifi Mesh system for wifi. The nodes have a wired backhaul so they will have an ethernet cable between them and the switch I mentioned above.

My biggest question is about the wired router just downstream of the ISP's modem. Does anyone have any recommendations? I see some on amazon that say "wired VPN modem". I don't think I need a VPN, but is that still what I am looking for? Here is an example.

Thanks in advance for any insight or suggestions!

New M.2. Wifi-Card for Notebook (2x2 Mimo) do I eed extra antenna?

I'm considering to upgrade the m.2 wifi card of my notebok which has wifi 4 1x1 mimo with a new one that has wifi 6 2x2 mimo.

Stupid question, does the 2x2 need extra antenna or something? Or can I simply replace it with the old one?

    Gaming over ethernet display

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:04 AM PDT

I have a gaming laptop with a broken screen (half of the screen has vertical lines) and a broken hdmi port on the motherboard

I searched for a way to output the display over lan network to another pc on my lan network but most softwares have a noticable latency with moving the mouse (VLC, ANYDESK, TEAMVIEWER, DESKSCREEN, tvee.io )

The laptop has a gigabit Ethernet port and my router has 4 gigabit Ethernet ports and the other laptop im using to receive the image also has gigabit Ethernet port

Is there any way to display the output of the laptop screen over the Ethernet without latency or at least lesser latency than the softwares i mentioned above.

    Sorry for my bad English.

New Netgear Powerline Adapter Dropping Connection

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 12:46 AM PDT

Brand new Netgear Powerline 2000+Extra Outlet (PLP 2000) can connect, and provide internet, but will constantly drop connection every second or so. The longest it's stayed connected was about 30 seconds before dropping. The two units seem to have a stable connection with the light always being a solid green, just on Unit 2 the internet light keeps dropping. Both units are directly into the wall, not into a powerstrip/surge protector. I'm in a home that was just finished being built, brand new wiring and all. I'm using the ethernet cables that came in their box. Not entirely sure what it could be other than the way the electrical system is wired.

Fiber internet but no yellow cable

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:42 AM PDT

Hello I'm a newbie when it comes to ISP and home networking etc. I'm currently using ACT Fibernet (India) and they claim to be fiber. My current speed is around 200mb/s . However there is no yellow cable connecting to my router. They have a modem like box outside my building where they have multiple optical wires connected to it but from there only an Ethernet cable is connected to my router. Is it actually fiber connection or am I being scammed?

Other ISPs here setup with their own routers and the optic fiber cable is connected directly to that box

Pls forgive me if my question sounds too stupid

    Thanks in advance

    Best Router for NOMAD internet?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:42 AM PDT

We're looking to upgrade our internet from pretty terrible satellite internet to cellular internet (as we aren't in an area with cable support but live very close to a cell tower), and have been planning to use NOMAD. We're trying out their "bring your own device" plan, but we just need to figure out one thing-- what router should we purchase to plug the NOMAD sim card into? Does anyone here have experience with nomad, or recommendations for routers used for cellular internet?

    Thank you!

House has daisy chained Cat5e - can I use it as follows for my home network?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:15 AM PDT

My house has Cat5e as phone lines. I replaced all the phone jacks using keystone jacks for Ethernet and quickly realized when using a cable toner/identifier everything was connected at some central location (probably the attic).

Short of going into the attic, terminating all the lines, and adding a switch up there (no idea if there is a power receptacle and don't love the fire risk of having a switch that usually runs hot up there) - I was curious if I could just do as follows:

Terminate the Cat5e in the basement and have my Router plug into this end (FiOS comes into the basement). Upstairs, use one of the many Ethernet jacks I installed (only one of them) and plug in my second Asus AC68U router as a mesh node using ethernet backhaul.

So yes I am using a daisy chained Cat5e, but if I only use two jacks (basement and upstairs) then it should be OK right? So far it's been stable but I just want to make sure I am not setting myself up for failure.

Slower internet speeds with UniFi USG, when compared to ISP-provided Router.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:50 AM PDT

    Hi

So I had an ISP that offered 60Mbps and I got 60 to 64 Mbps.

I recently changed to another ISP that offered 300Mbps.

I get 310Mbps when I use their router (linksys velop).

However, if I connect the modem to the USG WAN 1 port, using the same cable that was used with the ISP provided router, my speeds are around 150 to 190 Mbps.

How is it that my internet speed is reduced by half when connecting it to my UniFi Network? (I do not have devices that are taking up 150Mbps all the time...)

Quick question: Would cheap Ethernet cords cause slow internet?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:24 AM PDT

Hello everyone! So I'm running a 50 ft, "outdoor" Ethernet cable under my house from my PC to my router and one 50ft from my TV to my router.

The first cable I used for my PC didn't work so I ordered another, but this one is more slow than using my WiFi.

They're from Amazon and aren't a particular brand and they are unusually light, which is odd for a cable that is being sold as being a stronger cable.

Could the cable's quality effect the speed?

    Thanks in advance!

    High packet loss problems

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:11 AM PDT

Hi so I've been having trouble with playing games since some of my actions were just never executed , so I tested my packet loss on a website and it's always varying from 5% to 20% sometimes even 25% making FPS games for example unplayable. I'm using a LAN cable for my pc, I've plugged it in and out, restarted my pc, restarted the router and none of that seems to be helping.

Testing my packet loss on my phone with the same website (about 2-3m away from the router) I'm also having around 5-15% packet loss using Wi-Fi

Additional info: -I made the plug for the LAN cable myself with a toolkit and instruction, while checking my plug I've noticed the brown/white cable being a bit loose and the copper tip slipping out of the top -The packets lost on my phone are download packets lost while 0% lost during upload, I will check it on my pc once I'm able to

If any further information is needed to make a judgement please let me know I'll try to provide

Revisited: Seemingly random cable modem reboots

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:10 AM PDT

I still have the same problem as explained in this thread several months ago.

My ISP provided cable modem and wifi router device seemingly randomly reboots itself several times a day. Sometimes there are 10-12 hours between, then just 30 min. This also happened some weeks back when I was on vacation. So it doesn't seem to be affected by what I'm doing.

The issues started some weeks after adding a new home server (NAS) to the network (Ubuntu). At one point I thought rebooting the server solves the issue but it is not really the case. Rebooting doesn't really help and it sometimes simply starts working again normal without doing anything on my side.

The modem has been replaced 3 times by ISP but did not help at all. ISP also says downstairs neighbor in same building doesn't have any issues (they see when my modem drops out and reconnects). I'm mentioning this because I have had periods were it worked just fine for weeks and then issues start again after heavy rainfall. maybe just a coincidence as if water somehow is the issue the whole building would be affected and not just my line.

Anyway I'm at a loss on what to do. It's annyoing often getting kicked out in the middle of meetings or gaming or whatever.

    • Modem log is useless
    • rebooting the server doesn't help
    • server must run , can't turn it of for several days to check if issue goes away
    • bought a cable tester, all are fine.

Any ideas to figure out the issue?

Planning to upgrade my home network... Uk Advice

Planning to upgrade my home network... Uk Advice

Currently on Virgin Media 350mbps connection with 35mbps upload. I have a synology nas, printer, several laptops, TVs, phones etc etc, all using various connections.

We also have a 2 story L shaped house, with the virgin point at one end and all my kit that needs ethernet there...

    So Plan

About to buy x2 Asus RT-AX92U (triband wifi 6) routers.**Lounge:**1 router to here, where the current one is (unless this is a bad idea) connected to the virgin in modem/bridge mode. Here I have 6 items (7ports). 1 being the NAS which has x2 ports (Link Aggregation) but might move the NAS upstairs to the office - see below. So I am going to need a switch here. Although wondering if the router supports link aggregation, I saw some that did but not sure with this one.**I think it would be better placed on the backside of the lounge to give better coverage, but that's 5m away from the current box and wouldn't work with my next idea**

    Office

This is directly above the lounge and I am thinking running an ethernet cable in the wall up here to the desk - where I will have a managed switch (not decided on one yet) and the NAS (unless direct to the router is better?)Should I run x2 cables? 1 to switch 1 to 2nd router? or is the no performance drop to put this through my switch?

    Router 2 - Hallway/Bedroom

So from the switch in the office, I plan to go back into the wall and up to the attic, across the L shaped house and drop down either in to our main bedroom or the hallway just outside. and have the 2nd router placed here on a shelf, thus giving me ethernet backhaul and hopefully good coverage upstairs + possible for kitchen downstairs.

rough diagram - ran out of free pictures to use and measurements are about right.

    https://preview.redd.it/mn9eic4p8pr81.png?width=1633&format=png&auto=webp&s=36402dd59210db74319ff87b0e9da7cc2f111f98

Currently, we get poor wifi in the Kitchen + Gym + Bedroom (least where we use it)Speeds there are around 2-10mbps and flaky as best. While main room get 300-350mbps.

    • Any tips?
    • I am thinking getting Cat 6 cable - looks about £18 for 25m in BnQ probably get it cheaper else where too
    • New build house, I have run speaker cable up the walls but not hit a batton yet - any tips? and not sure what will be between the floors yet.
    • I am still trying to think if it would be better to move router 1, but the opposite wall has our sofa against it:

But the wiring to get there either through the ceiling which for my atmos speakers was not easy under the floor would not be simple.

Online gaming causes a complete drop of the Wireless connection.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:58 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'll try to be brief.

Basically, whenever I play any game on wi-fi I suffer huge latency or the wireless connection just drops!

I didn't have many problems some week ago but now EVERY time I try to play it just lag even on the main screen and if I manage to start a game the internet just drops after a few second and I'm forced to connect the Ethernet cable.

I don't think it's an issue with the games (already repaired and reinstalled), I also tried different games and with all have similar issues.
I updated the wifi card drivers and deactivated the power-saving options that Win10 has as default that turn the wireless card off. But nothing helped.
I also did test the packet loss with the command prompt, when I'm not playing is all normal but when I launch the game I got huge response times and complete disconnection of the internet...
But from there I don't know what to do now :(

Can someone help me? Do you know a way to detect where is the problem?

using a gateway in another subnet

Hi everyone, i am trying to achieve the setup below the orange bar.

    sdfgsdf

I got a subnet 192.168.1.1 (A) and a subnet 192.168.2.1 (B). In subnet A with the IP 192.168.1.44 there is a gateway service running, which e.g. can be used from the IP 192.168.1.27 without issues. Now i want to use that gateway from the IP 192.168.2.104 from Subnet B and i got no real idea how i should do that. Behind every IP is a Linux system and the Router is running linux to. I want to route all traffic from 192.168.2.104 through the gateway at 192.168.1.44.

Do i need to add static rules for the routing on the Router? Or do i have to modify the Firewall in some way? Something else?

Wifi not working in big house

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 03:50 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have a two story house (each floor 120ft2, so 240ft2 total) with lots cement walls.

The internet speed is ~80mbs download and ~7upload next to the ISP router, over Wifi.

The router position is in the corner of the top floor and as you can understand the signal in the lower floor oposite side is minimal (~2mbs at best you can't event have a facetime voice call).

I bought the Dlink Covr packet, but i am not pleased at all. I am pretty much in the same situation.

So i wanted to ask if :

-Someone with the same hardware (Dlink Covr) had better results and how he "arranged" them?

-If should opt for powerline wifi

    -Any other thoughts recommendations!

Thanks a lot for your time,

    Alexandros.
