Hello everyone I'm new here. I would like to kick this off by a discussion. This discussion is about how Microsoft windows more specifically OS updates.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:38 AM PST

So we all know how very odd windows can be they go from people like to it to F-ing windows 8 with all the tiles for absolutely no reason. Windows 10 is great windows 11 looks like a stupid attempt to make one windows for all device. Sound great in theory besides the TMP chip man wtf. Also just to add bit of gas to the fire. Why did Microsoft claim windows 10 the last windows they will make and just update it not make a whole new one what happened?

How do I cancel Windows 11 upgrade?

I accidentally clicked upgrade to Windows 11 while I was booting my laptop and it asked me if I wanted to upgrade. I want to stay on Windows 10 and continue receiving Windows 10 updates without it downloading Windows 11 automatically.

I don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 yet, is there anything I can do other than pause Windows Updates temporarily for 7 days?

Is there a mail programm that shows the path when searching for an email?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:46 AM PST

We have hundreds of folders with folders inside them, and when searching for a folder, it shows me the name of a folder without the path. This becomes problematic when I'm looking for a folder that has the same name as many many other folders that have different "parent folders".

For reference, I use Thunderbird. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Looking to install/use older updates of Win10?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 12:16 AM PST

I've been running Linux for a while, and loving it. However, I've bought a second drive to install Windows on, since I need it for a few things.

I very much want to use a version of Windows 10 from a time in which it was still capable of running older games; many of which no longer work on the newer versions. How can I do this?

I don't mind using Win10 without use of the internet, if that would make it less vulnerable.

Do product keys stay when changing windows versions?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 10:35 PM PST

I bought a used laptop and it came pre-installed with windows 11. I've decided to downgrade to windows 10 as it's what i prefer but was wondering if i needed to buy a product key or not.

How to remove the upgrade to windows 11 prompt?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 11:32 PM PST

Thanks to a BIOS update, AMD fTPM got enabled and now even after disabling it windows keeps asking to upgrade to 11.... I don't want 11, it's bad enough dealing with it on some of the machines at work. And given how the 7 -> 10 prompts got, I want this gone from my machine NOW.

What KB / windows update / reg entries do I need to destroy to fix this and stop it asking me every boot / 5 minutes?

Why is windows so much "faster" to use than mac?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 07:40 AM PST

I mean, yeah mac is cleaner, better looking and easier to use.

But i am just so much faster when using windows.
    Some examples..

    1. Using a program in fullscreen mode and wanting to close it again
Windows: Move the cursor to the far upper right without even watching, click, window closed.
Mac: Move the cursor to the upper lift, wait until the three small dots unhide, then precisely hit the red one.
    2. Having opened a chrome tab in fullscreen and wanting to have it in splitscreen with another tab opened (f.e. to make a comparison).
Windows: Open a new tab, pull it to the right, then select the first one for the left side, done.
Mac: Oh dear. Disable full screen mode for the first tab, then open the second tab as a whole new window and place the cursor over the small green button until you see the option to arrange the windows on the left/right side. Then also chose the other then for the other side.
    3. The fact that there's a separated taskbar and menubar but no "windows" button on mac.
I love the windows taskbar because it has everything in it. Time, date, small calendar, every opened window, search bar.
The two bars with mac are consuming way more screen estate than the single taskbar you get with windows.
And: One click and you can immediately hide/unhide the taskbar and search for something just by pressing the windows button, even in full screen mode.
When using mac in fullscreen mode, you have to actually move the cursor to the top or bottom and wait for the task/menubar to show up.

Now that are some points that came to my head when using mac again after some time.
So, i understand that mac is better in a lot of things but the points mentioned above somehow make me feel way slower when using windows as i use them all the time.
Another point is that i'm using a Logitech G Pro with my windows laptop (which has a 165Hz screen) which makes me feel even faster because there's almost zero input lag.
I can't even plug an USB-A receiver into my macbook, so bluetooth only (which is very sad considering it's also 120Hz)

    What do you think?

Why does file explorer do this?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 12:21 PM PST

I'm not sure if it's just me but why is it that when you search for a file in file explorer you can't open it in the file location? Instead, some genius at Microsoft thought that it would be a good idea to open the file and not show you where it is. I do quite a bit of graphic design and I need to file itself to drag and drop this into a photoshop file etc. This is also particularly frustrating when I'm looking for a file to send to someone for work. This needs to be fixed so that when I click the file after searching, it shows me the file location and not just launch it in a default application.

Questions about upgrading to windows 11

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 10:47 AM PST

Let me start by saying I am not the most familiar with all this but I am learning lol. I have a 8TB HDD. I was wanting to switch to windows 11 but first I need to enable secure boot. My HDD is GPT and in order for me to do that I need to convert it to MBR. MBR max partition is 2TB. So if I'm understanding correctly I'll never be able to use more than 2TB storage if I want to upgrade to windows 11? Am I missing something lol.

    App config profile switcher?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:58 PM PST

Does anyone know of a utility that allows a user to create multiple config instances/profiles for an application? I know each application handles config differently (.ini, in the database, .xml, etc..) but this solution wouldn't care, it would just bundle the whole application directory and have multiple instances of that bundle, allowing the user to select which instance they want from a list.

e.g. Chrome configured for work environment, with all extensions for work. Then as another "profile", Chrome configured for home, with settings and extensions I'd use at home.

If this doesn't exist, I might look into creating it. Anyone interested?

Should I stick with Windows 7 or move on?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:08 PM PST

Alright, so I have a DELL Latitude with a 2.7ghz CPU. It supports UEFI so I *could* install Windows 11, but I hate 10+ because of some features. I have a spare laptop with 10 which isn't in much use so I could do a RAM swap to get 8GB in this DELL. I know more and more programs aren't supporting Windows 7, so should I move on?

    CPU: 4 Core Intel i5-3340M @ 2.7 GHZ

GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000 (DirectX 11)

    WLAN: Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205

RAM: 4gb of DDR3 (Upgrading to 8gb after this is posted when I find my screwdriver)

    SSD: WDC 250GB SSD

    Audio: IDT HD Audio

Boot Mode: UEFI + Legacy ROMS Supported

Input: USB Mouse, Trackpad + Left & Right click , Trackpoint + Dedicated Left & Right click, Keyboard, Volume Buttons

    BIOS: A21 (Latest)

    I installed macOS 10.15
