Why is MicroCenter Dropping UniFi hardware? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:19 AM PST Hi all, I was just doing some digging to help a friend upgrade their home network to a UniFi network, and my go-to location for buying the stuff has always been MicroCenter. When i went to their website though, I noticed that their selection of UniFi equipment did not include any of their latest hardware. No Mesh APs, no Wifi 6 APs, and none of their routers. I know they used to carry cloud keys and UDM Pros, but those are not listed either anymore. you used to buy pretty much any UniFi product at microcenter, but now you cant even build a functional network from what they have left (none of the devices left have routing capabilities). Am I missing something? Is UniFi going out of fashion? or does Microcenter have some reason for dropping their stuff? [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:31 AM PST I'm replacing a google nest wifi system that has a defective access point and is out of warranty. I've settled on the Eero for relatability sakes and the good customer service. I'm between splurging for the Eero Pro 6 (two pack) or opting for a second hand Eero Pro 5 (two routers). I've done a lot of research and could use some opinions. Here's my situation: 1) I have a 1000 sqft apartment but due to the position of the modem, I need both a router and access point due to a lot of mirrors, walls, interference between the main router and my bedroom 2) I'm using wireless backhaul 3) I have 1 gig internet 4) I would like to get fast speeds via wifi 6 but really only have a few devices that can tap into at this point 5) my bedroom has a lot of devices and will be relying on an access point for connection 6) im most concerned with stability of the network to the access point but I'd ideally like to get 200+ mbps in my bedroom through wireless backhaul 7) cost is definitely a factor and I'm willing to spend it if Eero pro 6 is worth it. Im mainly afraid im going to overspend for something and not really tap into it. Eero pro 6 (400 for two pack) vs Eero pro 5 ( 100 for two routers) 8) We have about 10-15 devices total, not running concurrently. The most we do is stream, have 2-3 VPNs running for work at the same time, and then browse the internet. 9) my bedroom is about 35-40 from the main router. Wondering if I even need a mesh? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on this. I had a lot of problems with nest wifi (specifically the access point) so I'm really looking for a solution that I can set it up and not have to be concerned with a dropped wireless backhaul connection while maintaining some speed. For reference I get about 60 mbps with my access point. Just FYI: I'm not a networking junkie who needs bells and whistles. I just want it to work [link] [comments]
How can I make my windows machine connect to 2 different networks? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 03:58 AM PST Here is the setup I want Network 1: Devices: My Main computer (Windows 10), my phone, my game console Purpose: Internet usage Network 2: Devices: My Main Computer (Windows 10), Computer #2 (Windows 98), Computer #3 (Windows XP) Purpose: Offline file sharing via FTP. For now I have my main computer connected to Network 1 via WAN, and Network 2 via LAN. I am trying to use Filezilla server on my Main computer to host it's files via FTP. I sortof thought this would work out of the box, but apparently I don't know enough about manually setting connections than I thought. What are the steps I need to do to make sure all of this works? I think I know a few things, but I want to make sure I'm doing everything 100% right. [link] [comments]
CAT6/6A keystones where the cable enters from the bottom and not the back? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:37 AM PST Are there punch down keystones where you insert the cable at the bottom? the box in my wall is pretty shallow so if the cable come from behind it means it will be bent by 90 degrees (with a bit of pressure as well). Doesn't feel good :D (But I guess I'm just worrying too much) [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:43 AM PST Last night I was playing on a server with my friend, and I noticed I had very high ping, like 10,000 ms at its highest, and 1000ms average. My friend was not having this problem, and we are located in the same town. First I restarted my computer, but that didn't help, then I restarted my router. This fixed it for about an hour, then it quickly went back to how it was. I pinged the server in the command prompt and it same back normal with about 50ms. I think it's something with that port it doesn't like. I suspect somethings getting blocked in my router but I don't know what. Any suggestions would be great. [link] [comments]
Getting a PoE switch to work with my existing router + non poe switch Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:36 AM PST Hey guys I'm moving soon and want to have as much wired connection as a I can. Currently i have an ERX and a netgear switch non PoE with 2 multigig (up to 10) ports. I want to buy n extra PoE+ switch. I'll be having about 12 APs and cameras that i will want to connect to it. Ideally was hoping to have both switches connected to my router. Is this feasible? I understand I'll have a potential uplink bottleneck. But other than that do i have other problems i can expect? Thanks guys [link] [comments]
Did I get screwed by a verizon service rep or am I just incompetent? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:17 AM PST So I just moved into a new house and thought "Hey I should use this this chance to upgrade my internet" and bought a router (ASUS RT-AX55) and a higher internet connection from Verizon Fios Tech came and installed everything but turns out the router needed a modem which I didn't know I needed separately (dumb mistake) so he left one of the Verizon supplied router/modem combos (for a monthly fee ofc) and said that I can just buy a separate modem, just make sure it has an ethernet input and not coax because we don't have coax at our house. Now, upon doing some research it seems like all modems only have coax inputs? Am I missing something here? Im pretty sure we had coax before (bunch of coax cables everywhere) but I think the tech swapped it out for ethernet [link] [comments]

HELP: My WiFi has never been more frustratingly inconsistent in my life... Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:05 AM PST Okay, please don't stop reading this as i'm in DESPERATE need of help! I just moved to a different flat/apartment and according to my ISP, my area has no 'fiber optic'? What does that even mean? Anyways, my ISP is a single box that plugs into the wall in the hallway without an Ethernet to my PC, averaging around 4mb/s. Obviously i couldn't mentally handle that so we upgraded... If any of you are Brits, I was with EE (ISP) and i then upgraded to a package where they partnered with BT (ISP) and i'm now paying £55/month for speeds that are 20mb/s, according to Ookla speed test. From this, and i'm not sure if it's because i don't have 'fiber optic', my Ping is usually around 50 (which is apparently high?) when i'm in Discord and playing video games. During all of that, occasionally whilst online, my ping would drop to 200-5000+ for some odd reason. I looked a bit online and immediate research said i should get an Ethernet cable, or a LAN cable... I'm unfamiliar with the difference. I looked on Amazon and purchased a 'Cat-7 Gigabit Lan Network RJ45 High speed patch cord flat 10Gbps 600Mhz/s FTP POE' ?????? OH AND ALSO it cost me £15 and was 10m long which apparently doesn't matter... Once it arrived, i plugged it in and even moved the router into my bedroom about 3m away from my PC. It feels like the Ethernet cable doesn't do anything and doesn't even keep the speeds consistent and this comes into present tense where I don't know what to do, whether I should even bother moving to a different ISP because it's my 'no fiber optic' situation. Somebody please help me... [link] [comments]
Any tips for setting up an old Win10 laptop as a server? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:03 AM PST I'm going to be using my old laptop (i7-3610, 8gb,. Etc etc...) as a Plex Media Server (from my NAS) and Omada controller. What can I do to make sure it stays up and running with minimal fuss? All I've done so far is a clean install of Win10 Pro and set it to never sleep. I tried to turn off windows updates but it will only let me turn them off for 35 days at a time. Any recommendations? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 07:18 AM PST Wondering if someone had an idea on what's going wrong with my system. I'm currently using an Orbi mesh network. Generally speaking, my speeds using the Orbi are pretty good for what I'm doing. Getting around 300 mbps. I use a VMWare for a remote connection to my work computer. Here is the issue: When I use my computer outside of the cloud, I have no issues with speed at all. Everything runs smoothly. However, when I'm inside of the VMWare connection my computer is extremely laggy. Slow to scroll, slow to type, etc. My IT team is telling me it's an internet speed issue and I'm stuck with it. I am getting consistent speeds of about 300 mbps so I don't understand that. Is there something I'm missing? I'm trying to get rid of this lag issue and my IT people are extremely unhelpful. I'm a bit of a networking noob and I feel helpless. Anyone have an idea of what I could try to do to fix this? I restarted the modem, router, and satellite several times over the last few weeks and it hasn't fixed the issue. Is there a way to diagnose the underlying cause? [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Feb 2022 07:17 AM PST Is there some straight-forward way to log internet traffic (websites visited, primarily) on my router? I've been trying to find a good answer to this but almost every thread I've found seems to unhelpfully boil down to people giving their anti-logging opinions rather than advice on how to actually implement it. The router I use is an ASUS RT-N66U. I've heard of OpenDNS but it looks like I need to pay a subscription to get access to logging details. Is there any free options available or is the yearly subscription to OpenDNS honestly the best option? [link] [comments]
Linksys Smart WiFi Router: Hidden Advanced Menus Posted: 25 Feb 2022 07:13 AM PST Does anyone know of hidden or advanced menus on Linksys Smart WiFi routers? When I replace "home.html" with "advanced-wireless.html", I get advanced wireless settings. I doubt this is the only hidden menu, so I'd like to look into any others that might be lurking in the background. Linksys customer support isn't trained on these and actually denies they exist. Bandwidth/privacy considerations for a 55 unit condo building? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:57 AM PST Someone is proposing bringing in 1 Gbit fiber to service about 55 units over existing cable/coax infrastructure. The service will look something like this:
The path to each floor would look something like this
I'm concerned about bandwidth. 1 GBit for 55 units? This is 2022. Seems limiting to me. (I have 450 mbit down/20 up with my current cable provider.) I'm concerned about privacy. Who in the HOA will manage the network, what traffic can they see, how will they set up QoS (i.e. the kid in unit 501 is torrenting again and no one in the building can watch netflix:, how do they see who's doing what and limit what they can do, and should they be able to? Do different brands of moCA adapters work with each other? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:28 AM PST I have two ECB6200S02 and would like to use them with some MA2500D, if possible. [link] [comments]
Whats your favorite switch for home use? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:39 AM PST I have used a Cisco SG500X but recently moved to Brocade ICX6450 and ICX6430 for price, POE+, SFP+, and power consumption. The transition from Cisco to Brocade or Ruckus is easy enough and there is really good support from online communities. The Ruckus switches are fun but their licensing for a home user is troubling. If cleared by accident, it's gone. Recovering it for a network novice like myself, is something I am not comfortable with. Does anyone have a brand/model preference for POE+ and at a minimum, 4 SFP+ ports? Power consumption is a huge factor but I am not afraid to make fan modifications. [link] [comments]
TP-Link Ax10: Port Forwarding or DMZ? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:51 AM PST Hey guys. I want to have a webserver on my home network to be accessable on the internet. Until now i used port-forwarding (80 and 443), but i wanted to isolate the server and i came across DMZ, which my AX10 supports. I did some quick research on it and it sounds quite nice, but on another subreddit i read that DMZ on home routers isn't the same as DMZs on enterprise networks, since the home grade routers usually don't have these firewalls which makes a DMZ a nice option. The Post I think the AX10 has a VLan option, should i try to configure that instead or is the DMZ option on the AX10 actually good enough? I'm sorry if my networking vocabulary is bad, i'm not native and i'm quite new to the topic. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:43 AM PST So I get 300Mbps down and I run a speed test via Ethernet and it gets 300Mbps but if I use either my iPhone se 2020 or the Apple TV 4K via Wi-Fi it gets max 250Mbps and it's right next to the router when I do the test. Is there any reason why it maxes out at 250Mbps on Wi-Fi. I do have QoS enabled but even when that was disabled it still only does the same. Also it is on the latest merlin firmware. Thanks [link] [comments]
Are there UK iSP's that handle Gaming traffic better than others? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:34 AM PST On the safe side, is there a UK ISP that can do a better job of handling gaming type traffic than other ISP's? (I'm currently with Virgin, on a 50mbps package using a hub 3 - intel 5 dodgy puma chipset) My current consumption is; my house is just me and my Dad, at the most busy times, it's my dad watching Netflix (5mbps) and me on an MMO (3-8mbps), to save money I want to rid my current 50mbps package. Which is technically too much even regarding overheads? I have to be wary of maintaining a good upload speed still for TV and gaming if I was to get a lower package like 25mbps, I'm not sure how that scales with the down speeds. Also, I'm not sure if this applies (question and first answer): But If I'm on a faster speed doesn't a router then struggle more or if you want to say it in another way, doesn't the router's CPU get more busy? If so, a 50mbps is putting needless strain on my router for my needs? Or does it work on an network on-demand basis? I'm not sure, I wonder if the above link's first answer applies to my current home setup? With a lower download speed package in mind, for cost efficiency reasons at least, and an ISP that can let me use my own router (without using modem mode), is there an ISP that does a better job overall or if possible, a better job overall for gaming traffic than my current Virgin ISP? Thanks. Edit: Downvoting a question where I'm asking for further advice. What a bunch of sour losers. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Feb 2022 03:12 AM PST I'm renting out a house in Croatia and its pretty remote so I can only use wifi through a data only sim meaning theres a data cap unless I pay a lot more monthly for no limit. I want to create a weekly limit on the data so that the guests at the end of the month don't end up with no data. The modem/router that the company provided doesn't have the option natively so I need to look into 3rd party solutions. I've already done some research into it and figured out I could either do this through a proxy server but I'm not really sure how to go about that or I could buy a router that has QoS built in. Any help would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]
