looking for a laptop for college/noob-mid level gaming

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 11:13 AM PST

hey guys, looking for a laptop that'll get me thru college and also provide me some entertainment on the way. any and all help is appreciated

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
US. this is where i'm currently stuck at. i'd like to keep under $1000 USD if possible, but i dont know if thats happening
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
i'd prefer not, but will use one if its still relatively new and in good shape
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance is the main thing i'm looking for. build quality comes after. idrc about battery life and i have no idea what the other stuff means
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      no preferences
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inch or more
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
i genuinely have no idea yet, more info below
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      same as above question
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
GOOD BUILD QUALITY PLEASE. if i have to send something back i'm gonna scream.
also, how likely is it that i can get at least 16GB of ram? i think i'm gonna need it if i'm going into 3d animation
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
i've mentioned i'm going into college, more specifically 3d animation(because i suck at everything else).
i've literally never bought anything technology related on my own before so i wanna make sure i'm getting something that will last me at least until i have the smarts to start making better decisions(the computer i'm using right now is like 8 years old and doesnt even have a graphics card(or if it does its shitty))
my other issue is i'm not even the one buying it, its gonna be a gift from my parents but whether they can get it depends on how much it costs and how much money they have at the time. at the very least they're letting me pick it out so i'm making sure its good.
i've tried to do research on my own and sometimes i find models that sound good, but 1. i cant always trust these people and 2. sometimes they have terrible reviews. i've decided this sub would be the best solution and maybe i can learn something from here lol.
sorry for the lack of information but i'm lost when it comes to technology and computers and all that and i'm limited in what i understand (i get what ram and storage are but idk the specifics of processors and graphics cards and what they mean and how good they are)

again any and all help is appreciated and i hope i've at least said enough to give people a good idea what i'm aiming for. thanks!

Looking for a nicer laptop, don't know how to title

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 11:06 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

If it's possible, list a laptop for around $750, and one for $1200, USA

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    refurbished

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

ultrabook, build quality and performance is most important and battery life around 6-7 hours of video streaming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thin/light enough to be in a backpack, so not too light or heavy

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, I have a main rig for professional work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

GTA If it's possible at medium-high 60fps if not less, at this price point for a laptop i would accept less.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliability/Ease of use is something I value VERY high. Finger print reader would be nice, touch screen is something that would be nice but I can't have everything

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

higher refresh rate would be nice for the nicer model, 1440p if possible, i'll sacrifice a refresh rate for that too.

Macbook offer worth waiting / decent price?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 10:44 AM PST

Been nosing for BF/CM deals and found the below.

Obviously expensive, 'cause Apple, but is the lead time on delivery viable? I've not seen many at the max of 64gb. I don't want to miss the deal as Apple products so rarely get discounts, yet it is a lot to stake on not getting anything for an indeterminate amount of time.

See if something else appears Monday? Anyone know this company?

Help choosing a Laptop for Gaming, Coding/Programing, Creativity, and Misc. $1,600-2,000 USD.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:52 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $1,600, if possible. Max $2,000.

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

I prefer new, but I'd consider a refurbished/used laptop if it was better.

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, Build Quality, Battery, Form Factor.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not really important at all. It's a bonus if its thinner/lighter weight, but I honestly don't care if its heavy or thick, I'm mostly going to be using it at home anyway.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Prefer minimum of 15"+. I like larger screens, but I might be willing to consider smaller if its a better choice.

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Laptop will be used for playing, designing, and developing video games, writing, coding, 3D modeling, and minor photo/video editing. I'd like to be able to run Scrivener, Gimp, Clip Studio Paint, Blender, Unreal Engine 4/5, Unity, OBS, and Visual Studio 2019.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Sims 2/3/4, FFXIII 1/2/LR, FFXIV, FFXV, Kingdom Hearts series, My Time at Portia, Planet Zoo, Fallout 3/4, Life is Strange 1/2/3, Phasmophobia, Raft, Borderlands series, Cities Skylines, Don't Starve Together, Minecraft, GTA V, Valorant, Genshin Impact. Not sure if it makes that big of a difference, but I like playing games with Mods, so if it can be modded, it probably will be. I'd like the ability to play other/newer/more demanding games, though I'd understand if the laptop couldn't run them, or even everything listed, all that great, but the more that it can run on medium/high graphics the better.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Ideally, I'd like upgradeable storage and ram, 2+ USB ports, a good keyboard, HDMI and Ethernet ports, and a large storage capacity, though those aren't necessarily deal breakers. It gets hot where I live, so good cooling would be a plus. It would also be nice if the laptop was good at running multiple programs at once, since I tend to be bad at limiting the amount of multitasking I do and always have a million things open.

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm hoping to find a good quality laptop that will last a few years, has good performance, and can run a good amount of games.

    Is Intel Core I5-10210u 8gb RAM (Mx250 2gb) 256gb SSD a good pick for a laptop?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:49 AM PST

I know the storage is quite low, but I got interested on the dedicated video card and cheap price for this black friday, around US$ 600 in Brazil. Is this a good pick? I want it to learn 3d modelling, do some stuff with design and maybe some gaming.

Looking for a laptop that can handle music production and non-intensive gaming for under $1k.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:43 AM PST

This seems like a hard ask. Ideally I'd like no limitations in music production or gaming—but at the same time, I have a definite need for a laptop for various other reasons and that's my comfortable range.

As far as music production it would largely be within a DAW (I have an old interface but I don't intend to record line-in, and MIDI seems unnecessary for what I'd like to achieve). As far as gaming I'd like my son to at least be able to play something like Minecraft. No COD or anything like that. That's what the console is for.

My understanding is that I'd likely need 16 GB RAM—but maybe I could pass with 8? 512 storage would be nice but I could easily go lower. Other than that I'm pretty clueless.

Last laptop I bought was a MacBook Pro in '05 and I've been using a Mac for work for years. That said—I do not want a Mac, even if there's a miraculous deal out there.

I was drawn to the Surface Pro in my early research but even with the model comparison charts I still am way too smooth-brained to know if what I'm looking at will actually meet my needs.

    Thanks in advance!!!

    Request advice for two laptops

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:29 AM PST

Both laptops can be the same model or different models. I am numbering all answers, any answers marked with a 1 will reply to the first laptop, all answers marked with a 2 will reply to the second laptop.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
For the total budget, this is the upper limit. Of course would prefer cheaper if there is a cheaper option that fits what we need. Country of purchase is US
    • $1700
    • $1500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No for both
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor
    • Performance, battery life, form factor/build quality are tied, neither are critical
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • 5/10 (it would be nice but if I am choosing between quality and size, I'll choose quality every single time)
    • 7/10
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • 15''
    • From 13-15''
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • No. will be running virtual machines and doing a decent amount of programming which where slower processing makes a big difference
    • No. Remoting into work through Citrix portal is maybe the most intensive activity.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No gaming for either laptop
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • No, key requirements are good processing power and memory. Will likely be used on a dock for majority of use. Minimum 16GB RAM
    • Good keyboard is somewhat important. Also minimum 16GB RAM
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
For both will require at least 512GB SSD. Was considering ThinkPads, although for #2 aesthetics are somewhat of a priority and ThinkPads definitely don't excel in that area. #2 is replacing a Dell XPS 13 which has been nothing but issues, including a replaced battery due to swelling and constantly reinstalling bluetooth drivers because it disconnects. Laptop 1 will likely be used to dual boot windows and linux.

    Thank you for any advice!

Please suggest me a laptop for my mum

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:14 AM PST

Hello everyone, hope you're doing well :)

I want to buy a new laptop for my mom because her 2011 hp starts to go crazy, and I want to get her a laptop that she would really keep for 10 years. I like Dell and was thinking about getting the inspiron 5505, but 16gb of ram feels overkill.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      600CAD - 850 CAD, buying in canada
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality, form factor, battery life, performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Min 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nope, just running 20 chromes tabs sometimes
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Nope
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
At least 500gb of ssd and 8gb of ram, good battery life, good quality and durable. Also, since it's for my mom, obviously not looking for a flashy gaming pc.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I know it's anecdotal experience, but I had a bad experience with Acer/Lenovo/Asus so maybe avoid those but I am still open

    Thank you :D

Trying to decide between 2 laptops of similar spec - 2020 Macbook Air vs Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 08:59 AM PST

    Hey all!

I have the ability to purchase either machine for $800 USD.

    Thinkpad - 11th gen i5, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, windows 10 pro

    Macbook Air - M1, 8GB ram, 256gb ssd, OSX

Why I like the Macbook - Access to Logic (Want to learn EDM production, from my understanding Logic is the easiest to use/get in to), better battery life, better screen (although I don't care about the screen too much)

Why I like the Thinkpad - Windows 10 Pro gives me access to VM's (studying networking), Packet Tracer, GNS3, programs that can't run or don't run well on Macbook (Paralells is a far step from VMWare), I imagine better durability, I can try and learn FL Studio (albeit not nearly as user friendly)

What I dislike about both - only 8gb ram. This sucks for virtualization. But, at this price point, I really can't complain.

If you were in my situation, which would you be leaning towards?

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life, performance, noise, build quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important but the lighter and thinner the better

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14 in and below preferred

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming. Maybe some light gaming every once in a while ,but gaming will be an afterthought not the purpose of this machine.

Laptop for College Hp aero 13 or m1 macbook air

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:23 AM PST

I need a laptop to last me 5+ years. No preference in operating systems, I've used a macbook pro before so I'm familiar with mac OS and have a also used a pc. Battery life, screen and speakers crucial. Is it worth spending extra 150 dollars for a macbook air?

i need help choosing between these gaming laptops

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:03 AM PST

i am looking to buy a budget gaming laptop, there is currently no sale in my area, so all these are quite expensive compared to what others have been getting this year

    options are:

acer aspire 7 price: 55,990 inr

    processor: ryzen 5 5500u

    storage: 512gb ssd

    ram: 8gb

    GPU: nvidia GeForce gtx 1650

    battery: 48wh

    display: 60hz [i assume]

acer nitro 5 price: 59,990 inr

    processor: ryzen 5 4600h

    storage: 256gb SSD, 1tb hdd

    ram: 8gb

    GPU: nvidia gtx 1650

    battery : n/a

    display: 60hz [i assume]

lenovo ideapad gaming price: 56,990 inr

    processor: ryzen 5 4600h

    storage: 512gb ssd

    ram: 8gb

    GPU: nvidia gtx 1650

    battery: 45wh

    display: 120hz

these seem to fit in budget!

id like to get more suggestions of laptops, around the same price, also something that is durable, and decent battery life would be appreciated!!

mostly intended for home use and gaming, a powerful processor is appreciated! and occasionally will be taken out, like on trips and stuff!!

I'm staying away from intel 10th gen and below due to low efficiency!! but if gpu and everything else is good then i shall consider it

    thanks for the help!!

    i live in India btw!!

France : Looking for a low budget laptop for my mom ; <=500€

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:02 AM PST

Hiya. My mom and I are looking to buy new laptops. All she wants is something to browse, store files and do simple tasks on. I'm trying to find the best price/quality ratio for a low-budget laptop that will last. It's actually kind of difficult.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    <=500€ ; France

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      • Build quality is the most important, it needs to last (and withstand cigarette smoke)
      • Performance is unimportant as long it doesn't get too slow with time ; I think she would benefit a lot from an SSD
      • Form factor is not too important ; cheap and solid is best ; this should not be a 2-in-1, she wants a classic Windows computer with the workflow she's used to
      • Battery life is unimportant ; the laptop will mainly be used at home
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not very important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15' inches or more

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Browsing and simple tasks

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I believe an SSD would be good for her. Storage space isn't a huge concern as long as it's not ridiculously small.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It looks like a good portion of low-budget options are now Chromebooks or some other kind of 2-in-1 which we want to avoid.
I brought up the idea of getting her a cheap Chromebook and installing Linux on it so that she'd have something that fits her needs but she doesn't want to change what she's used to, so Windows would be best.

Thanks in advance to anyone who's willing to help out.

After an everyday laptop around £1000 or under, in uK

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:57 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £1,000, United Kingdom

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, if it's good value (I'd hope to keep it running for some time)

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, then battery life (not going to be doing a lot of stuff away from a socket so not the end of the world)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not a dealbreaker

Do you have a preferred screen size?

Ideally around 15" but not absolute as I do have an external monitor

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Only light gaming, very rarely photo editing, otherwise mainly work stuff, Netflix etc and internet browsing

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Small keyboard point but would like one with a proper number pad as I do a lot of Excel-ing

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Laptop suggestion (Virtualization,trading, infosec)

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:56 AM PST

Hi everyone, I am an infosec/cybersecurity student and would like something with the power and flexibility for light VM work. I currently have a Macbook Air with the M1 but it just isn't doing it for me with my VM work and speed. Would like something with more memory and RAM.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
-Would like to be under $900 USD and ideally buy something within the next few days while some good deals exist.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
not without an amazing warranty (2 years+) and price point
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-Dont care about touchscreen (would actually prefer to not have it). Concerned about quality and performance more than anything. Battery is important but I will rarely use it in an environment that there isnt a place to charge the device.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Thin would be good but it is not an end all for me.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-Would like something bigger than my current deice (13 inches). But, would not go over 16 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-Light VM work, Kali Linux, trading via think or swim
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -Not a gamer
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-Atleast 16GB ram, SSD (500+), finger print reader would be cool and convenient,
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-From the research I have done, I am led to believe Ryzen would be more suitable for running VM and trading. But I would be fine with i7 if the price/value and quality are there.
