Linux Making a partition for Pop-os. I want to dual-boot with windows and pop-os and I'm trying to make a partition to have pop-os on. Why is the shrink volume so much smaller than the free space? Sorry if anything I said there was wrong. I'm very new to this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Can I swap my Zorin install with Mint?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 10:40 AM PST

I have two partitions- one root and the other being home.

Actually I saw a Zorin forum saying to get from 15.3 to 16, I need to perform a fresh install. They are working on an inbuilt update feature but it's still in development. While Mint has this already figured out.

Can I just wipe and install Mint onto the already created Zorin's root partition without encountering any type of problems due to this in the future?

Home has files in it and I don't have any storage to create backup.

    Thanks

When I booted my laptop and went to the boot menu I got these options for booting:

    Windows Boot Manager

    P0: Something

    P1: something

    Sandisk

    UEFI: Sandisk

    UEFI: SanDisk, Partition 1

    What should I do next??

Edit: It has worked guys! Thank you for your help guidance and time. Doing this felt like an adventure.

How do I update Zorin 15.3 to 16?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 10:31 AM PST

I'm using Manjaro KDE and installed Zorin on my father's laptop. So thought Ubuntu based distros would also update themselves to the newer version after system updates but even few weeks after the launch of Zorin 16, it still says 15.3 in the settings.

Anyway I could get 16 without a fresh install?

    Troubleshooting WINE? msvcm90.dll problems

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 03:31 PM PST

I installed the latest (stable) version of WINE with the instructions provided on their site, then tried to run Athena's ASS (Armor Set Search) through it.
On every launch, I got an error from WINE saying that the program needed to close, with a crash log mentioning msvcr90.dll. Following advice from the internet, I opened winecfg and set that DLL to native. The error then changed to mention msvcm90.dll instead. This time there was no effect, and the error persisted every time.

The question is, where do I go from here? Are there DLLs I need to download and replace the WINE ones with for better compatibility? Should I be using Winetricks and changing some setting within there? Or is there even something I could still try within the default winecfg settings? Anything I could try other than just leaving a bug report and waiting around be great.

    System fails to boot

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 03:19 PM PST

When I have formatted my HDD in ext4 on GPARTED (not yet put /home), everything is fine. Then I followed his instructions from this website to put /home on my HDD, no issues

Afterwards, I restarted my PC and I got the error messages

EXT4-fs (sda1) : VFS : Can't find ext4 filesystem [FAILED] failed to mount /home [DEPEND] Dependency failed for Local File Systems

    What should I do ?

Cannot boot into live usb on thinkpad x250 using ventoy

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 02:48 PM PST

I bought a thinkpad x250 today and decided to try out pop os and mint on it, using ventoy. I made sure secure boot was disabled and UEFI was selected. The usb was made 1st in boot order too. I could select the distro of my choice using ventoy but then I got a black screen with nothing happening.

When I separately created bootable usb for each distro, I was able to boot into a live session in each case.

I have never faced an issue using ventoy on other machines I have ( an older desktop and a newish gaming laptop) . I am curious why I faced an issue this time. Why did this happen?

    Bootable installer question

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 10:35 AM PST

How is it possible that a bootable installer can automatically install apps after installing Linux? Is it some kind of an app that can set the installer to do this or just some terminal wizardry?

    chown problems in XAMPP htdocs

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 03:32 AM PST

Hi, I just installed XMAPP and needed to setup the web directory for local development. I did this

    /opt/lampp$ sudo chown -R mike:www-data htdocs/

Which worked, but when I made a folder and inside that, a file, owner and group were both mike:mike

What would I need to run to make anything I create in that folder mike:www-data so that it plays nice with apache?

    Thanks.

Linux programs can't see the mounted drive?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 09:17 AM PST

I'm running Zorin 16, and I managed to use the default file program to mount a network drive using smb (samba?). It shows up in the file manager just fine. The drive is our media server -- incidentally it's running retropie, and I really need to fix all the tags on our music/media.

The problem is that when I open EasyTag or Musicbrainz picard (two programs suggested for this kind of thing) neither of the programs can find the mounted drive.

Is there some trick to this? I suppose I could just try installing the programs on the retropie and fixing the tags that way, it just seems like this is something I should be able to do from my laptop and not mess with the retropie setup.

Best "simple" distro for low-end laptop?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 07:24 AM PST

OK, I know this may have been asked like a one millon times. Still, I wanted to know what you think about which distro would suit this laptop.

    Intel Celeron N2808

    4gb ram

I'm testing Manjaro XFCE. Getting good results so far but I'm no linux expert so you may know about better options :) I was thinking about Mint XFCE too, but I don't know if I'd gain performance from it?

Btw I'm using it for basic web browsing, youtube videos and stuff.

    Thanks (:
