Posted: 26 Nov 2021 07:58 PM PST I just bought a new 2.5" Sata-based SSD and was wondering if there are any commands I can run to see if the SSD is factory new, or whether it has been used before and returned. I'm running PopOS 21.04. Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:27 AM PST I wanted to install wine i followed the normal steps at winehq.org so i can get the latest version as the one in software manager was a bit old at the last step when i chose the stable version i was met with an error: The following packages have unmet dependencies: winehq-stable Depends: wine-stable (= 6.0.2-impish-1) E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages trying to install from the software manager also shows the same error. Any tips would be appreciated! OS: ZorinOS 16 core [link] [comments] |
Help with starting Linux on a virtual machine. Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:22 AM PST I've been interested in Linux for a while, I want to start getting into it and figuring it out as an OS. My question is, is it possible to start with a distro on a virtual machine and get it set up and tinkered with and then swap it over as my main OS? I'm a bit of a PC noob but I like the open source aspect of Linux and the customization as I've always been an Android guy haha so I wanted to get it set up and all ready while still running windows as it has all my files etc [link] [comments] |
Understanding why a copied live USB install doesn't work Posted: 26 Nov 2021 09:01 PM PST My aim here is to understand why what I am trying here does not work, and how to make it work. I know there are other ways to accomplish this, that is not the point. The source (sdb) live USB is a basic, command line only arch-install. Destination (sdc) is new USB of same size ## Copied the MBR # dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc bs=512 count=1 ## Install filesystems # mkswap /dev/sdc1 # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc2 ## Make and mount dirs # mkdir /mnt/source # mkdir /mnt/dest # mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/source # mount /dev/sdc2 /mnt/dest ## Copy all files # rsync -aAXHv /mnt/source/ /mnt/dest # Unmount everything and try to boot using the new usb # Get as far as "GRUB_" and there it hangs, all I can do is power off. So at this point, the boot sector is the same, all the systems files have been copied, what is missing? Why does a cloned USB (dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc) work, but this does not? To get a proper understanding of all this, what should I be reading? [link] [comments] |
2 old laptops with usb drives mirroring each other Posted: 27 Nov 2021 12:38 AM PST Hi all I'm looking for a way of setting up a home server, I have two laptops and I was looking at hooking up two USB hard drives to them. I'll be running old hardware, so my aim is to have one in the house, and the second in the garage. So if one fails I can move across to the other. Would anyone have any recommendations in the type of setup I should go for. I'm thinking: - nextcloud - rsync between the two machines Thanks Pat [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2021 09:41 PM PST I'm thinking about giving ArcoLinuxB a spin. Anybody here have any experience with that particular distro? Currently running PopOS but I know I want to get over to Arch eventually, and after looking between Endeavor and Arco I am leaning towards Arco. [link] [comments] |
Input device management on Arch Linux. Posted: 26 Nov 2021 07:23 PM PST Hello, there. I started using—I'll just call GNU/Linux or GNU + Linux, Linux for now—a Linux OS a month or two ago. I've been loving it and my distro hopping has come to an end when I met Arch Linux (I use Arch btw). I came from Windows and I'm not much of a tech guy, but I realised something about sound; on Discord (on Windows) I have much, much more input devices to choose from. After switching to Linux those input devices have gone from around four, to just one. The one input device is called 'Analog Audio Stereo' and I realised that it captures my mic input and desktop sounds too, so if I game with my friends, they hear it too. There was a similar input device in Discord Windows called 'Analog Stereo' or such and it does the exact same thing but doesn't capture my mic input. I seemed to find a solution to this problem by setting the 'capture' and 'mic boost' options in alsamixer to zero. I'm pretty sure I know what the 'capture' option means, but 'mic boost' I have no idea. Also, I use pulseaudio and the 'pulsemixer' package from the main repository. Any help would be appreciated.
