Are Combo Modem Routers Worse Than Individual Units?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:51 AM PST

We are getting a new home and our only real internet option will be Xfinity. I have signed up for the 600m plan and looked at their recommendations for modems since we are not going to rent their equipment. The Netgear CAX80 and the Arris G36 were at the top of the list. These units are combo modem/router units, but I was taken aback to see the horrible reviews for these pieces of equipment online.

It got me wondering if these combo units are a step down in quality. Should I be focusing on buying separate modem and routers?

    Any advice is appreciated!

"I need a router to cover wiFi for every room of my 10,000 sq ft house. my budget is $50 and my house has no existing cabling and i refuse to run new cabling. also the router will be located in the basement of my 5 story house."

I've seen posts that aren't THIS bad, but I've seen some where people have the expectation that there is a single magic device which can somehow bend the rules of physics and provide WiFi coverage for every room of your massive estate.

Think of WiFi like sound. If you have a stereo in your basement turned on max volume, would you be able to hear it from your bedroom on the other side of the house? If you can hear it, can you make out the words of the song?

I'd like to provide some personal rules of thumb when figuring out how to get good WiFi coverage.

    • If at all possible, use wireless access points with an ethernet backhaul. These are AP's like UniFi or TP-Link Omega.
    • For every 1000 - 2000 sq ft of home, you need at least one access point.
    • You don't want more than 3 walls between each access point.
    • Access points broadcast DOWN. Keep them mounted on the ceiling. Also, don't expect them to provide coverage on the floor above.
    • Your WiFi controller software should show you the signal level of the connected devices. Ideally, signal level should be greater than -70dB.

I'm in the process of setting up a eero pro 6 to a modem that only has one port, I'm hard wiring my desktop to the second port in the eero. In the near future a I'm getting a voip service which will need a port do i get a hub or switch ? I have no clue what each is for. Does it cut down internet speeds or interfere with WiFi speeds when something plugged into ports are bringing used ?

Looking for Advice on Fast Net Setup for Home Office in NYC

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:01 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was running my 2021 Samsung Ion via wifi but the amount of interreference from other apartments meant that my fast connection kept dropping anyway. So I'm using an ethernet cable connected to a USB-C hub, which is plugged into my TP-Link Router. But it's very messy and I'm looking for a cleaner way to set this up.

I was planning on drilling holes to route the ethernet cable but I'll get in trouble with the building. Then I noticed a phone jack right behind my desk and another behind the modem next to the coax for Internet. I removed the jack and it's only a Genesis Catlink 32 so I don't believe this will work.

I was hoping to find a solution with either other equipment or by modifying what's already available.

I took a quick video of the setup for anyone who'd like to see what I'm dealing with here:

    Thanks for your help!

    Firewall Questions

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:51 AM PST

I'm currently looking at purchasing this https://shop.netgate.com/products/1100-pfsense as a hardware firewall solution for my home. Currently, I have Verizon Fios internet with an ORBI mesh setup. I'm familiar with pfSense and can configure all of that just fine, but I'm not familiar with firewall hardware itself. Would you all recommend I replace my current router with this setup or have the firewall serve as a passthrough to the router? Also, would this introduce any issues with my ORBI setup?

Sorry if this is a newbie question, still getting into all of this stuff :). I appreciate any help!

    Build a network for tenants

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:24 AM PST

The building gets an internet connection from the provider soon. The idea is simple: get one RJ45 port in every of the six rooms.

    a) I found the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter10x for cheap and imagine that it would work, cause it has a layer 2 built-in switch with 10 ports, meaning that I wouldn't need a seperate switch, but a modem.

    b) Other idea is to get a router and modem combo, needing a seperate layer 2 switch.

In both cases I would seperate all rooms via VLAN.

What would be your opinion, what makes more sense, a) or b)? Also I'm open to tips and suggestions in any way!

(I am aware of the legal sitation and the ISPs terms and conditions, this post is just about the technical side.)

Upgraded router, now having wireless issues

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:06 AM PST

    Hello all,

For many years I had a Ubiquiti network setup here at the house. Router on main floor, WAPs in a couple of places. I had two issues: Throughput (my Internet speed was greater than the max speed of the router) and wireless coverage (it was OK, just didn't reach all the corners of the house)

I replaced the router with a DLink DIR-X1560. Did not get any new WAPs, as this router boasted a coverage area bigger than my house.

On the positive side, when wired in, the the new router is super. Very fast, no issues. My problem is with the wireless.

    1) It took a while to find a good placement for the router and it's four antennai. I think I have done so now, and I have better coverage throughout the house. It wasn't perfect, though. I did need to re-use of old WAPs downstairs. Once I did that, no issues down there.

    2) Finally getting to the point of the post! I can only describe the problem this way: it seems like the wireless 'goes to sleep' in some way, and devices lose connectivity. Two examples: I have several Google Homes and Minis throughout the house. The minis are no problem. The Homes keep losing their setup/connection. A day or two will go by, I ask Google something, and she reports either 'Please wait while I connect to Wifi' or the bigger 'This unit isn't setup yet' and I have to go through the Google Home setup. I also have intermittent problems with my garage door opener, my phone, and other specific devices. My computer upstairs that has an older Acer USB wireless adapter takes upwards of 15 seconds to connect to the wireless. My Surface is quicker, but still seems to take to long to connect. My Sonos speaker was so flakey with the wireless connection, I ended up just wiring it in.

While my Ubiquite had issues, at least it was solid and consistent.

    Current Wireless setup:

    WPA2-Personal

    Mixed 802.11 bgn

    Channel: Auto

    I have a recurring worry:

    - the working devices have grabbed on to the old WAP, which is why they continue to work.

    - I kept the same SSID name with the new router.

    - but maybe those things nothing to do with it.

Am I missing something somewhere? Should I wipe everything and give all components a new SSID and start again? Is it something with the security setup? I'm almost at the point of just putting the Ubiquiti stuff back in, at least for now, until I can figure this out.

    Thanks,

    Tony

Got about 10m of ethernet spare - does it need laying out?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:17 AM PST

    Hiya,

I've recently replaced my ethernet cable running the height of the house, and I kind of miss-measured. I've roughly 10m left at the attic end, and wondered if I can leave it bunched up or does it need to be laid out to not disrupt the signal/damage the internals?

    Kind Regards

Bell Canada - How to take advantage of 10G port on ISPs router?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:10 AM PST

Obligatoru apologies in advance as networking is not my first language.

I'm moving soon and my area has access to 1.5gbit fibre that'd I'd love to take advantage of. I understand that it's overkill and useless but I get a free upgrade to it through a corporate deal so why not have some fun? My issue is getting that 1.5g into my existing network.

The ISP is Bell, and the provided router is the Home Hub 4000 which I'm sure is a rebrand of something else but I'm not sure what. It has 4x1gb ports and 1x10gb.

Currently I have a pretty minimal setup consisting of a Netgear GS324TP switch, 2 TP-Link WAPs (EAP245 and EAP225), and a house full of CAT6. The Netgear switch can do Link Aggregation, but as far as I can tell the HH4000 cannot so my first thought was something between the Router and Switch to take the the 10gb to multiple 1gb links. I have both RJ45 and SFP ports to play with for that.

My fall back plan, and likely the cheapest option, is 10gb (or more likely 2.5) straight to my main PC and let the rest of the house fight over the scraps, but that's much less interesting.

Could malware encrypt a backup NAS over the local network?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:55 AM PST

Hi! So a friend recently got her PC infected with malware, which encrypted all of her data.
I do regular backups with hard drives, but after that I realized, if I was her my backup would most certainly be encrypted as well, because I forget to unplug it quiet often. I know that's stupid, but I was wondering, if I would use a NAS thats on my local network, could it get encrypted as well? What could I do to prevent that? Maybe a password everytime my pc wants to write to my backup NAS? I'm an absolute amateur regarding home networks. Thanks for taking your time and reading my post!

TLDR: Title + What could I do to prevent that?

Yet another post asking for advice on a good wifi router for home

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:35 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've been reading some threads here about wifi routers but I cannot make a decision on which suits my needs better.

I'm fairly new to the networking world and I've always used the ISP router. Not a long time ago I set up a home server and faced the problem that my ISP router does not support NAT Loopback. I started digging around about possible solutions and I arrived here.

After reading a bit more I decided to start the amazing journey of replacing the ISP router. I have everything I need to do that, except I don't know which router to choose :(

Before getting into detail about my needs, let me ask a question. Is Wifi6 really worth it? Let me explain myself... I've been comparing and looking at some Asus routers and been reading about router firmware (ASUSWRT-Merling, DD-WRT, Tomato....) and wifi 6 routers are barely supported. I would like to use one of such firmwares because they provide some interesting configurations (like per-client DNS configuration). Also, wifi 6 routers are more expensive. At home almost all the devices are connected via ethernet to the router (TV, PS4, laptops, and desktop PCs and, of course, the server), the only devices using wifi are a TV we have in the bedroom, Alexa, and the smart plugs. Also, we don't play games on the phone, just normal use for reading news, watching TikTok or youtube, and not much more. So... will a wifi 6 router be worth it in my case?

What I'm looking for in the router:

    1. To be able to create guest wifi networks
    2. To be able to configure per-network or, at least, per-device, DNS servers
    3. To support NAT Loopback
    4. Three VLAN support
    5. Ideally, supported by DD-WRT, Tomato, or ASUSWRT-Merlin (if Asus) firmwares

As you see, I think I don't need anything super fancy or super complex at this moment. My budget is $200 or less and the server I have at home is mainly used as a media server, for hosting some websites and services that should be available both inside and outside the local network.

I've been looking at the ASUS RT-AX88U but it's over-budget and probable much more than I need.

Thank you very much for your help!

Upload files from Samsung s21 to NAS?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:54 AM PST

I had upgraded from an S8 to the S21a few months ago and previously used es file explorer to connect to my home NAS.

Today I wanted to free up space on my phone and tried to upload some files using es file explorer and it fails. It has no problem connecting to it or downloading files but I can no longer upload. Not even using copy to.

Is there something new in Android that doesn't allow uploading of files?

TP-Link M4 Deco Mesh - Mesh points slower than Main (no ethernet backhaul for mesh points)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:37 AM PST

    Hey all,

I just finished setting up a Mesh wifi system (1 Main and 2 as mesh points).

The main router (mesh) is connected to ethernet (I have 1gig up/down) in router mode.

I added the two other mesh points wirelessly (not ethernet backhaul).

Surprisingly, it was easy to setup and I placed it to the recommended areas around the house and has been working well.

With this current setup, I get like 400-500mbps download/upload wirelessly connected to a laptop WHEN and only when I'm next to the main router.

Now for testing, I disconnected the wifi on my laptop (even tried to forget the network and reconnect) -- then I sat 2 feet away from the wireless mesh point.

For some reason, I'm only getting a max of 80-100mbps down and around 120mbps upload.

I tried the 3rd mesh point and it's the same thing.

I got back close to the main mesh (router) and its back to 400mbps.

    --

I have tried a bunch of combination by either turning on and off UPNP, Fast Roaming and Beamforming and they were all the same.

I also verified that my laptop was using 5ghz (instead of 2.4ghz) with all my tests.

I have setup Google mesh Wifi for my mom in the past and for her, it was all the same speed on her mesh around the house, regardless of what mesh point (also no ethernet backhaul) her devices are connected to.

Is this a limitation of the TP-Link M4 Mesh or am I doing something wrong?

    TIA!

Mesh recommendation for grandparents to use with streaming

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:25 AM PST

My grandparents recently got a smart tv that is on the complete other end of their router/modem. It's about a 2300sq ft house with multiple walls between the two. Their signal isn't strong enough to sufficiently stream on their TV and moving either isn't really a logistical option.

What is a good option for extending the wifi signal? Short of reading the benefits of mesh vs pure extender, I'm not sure what to look for. Some of the other options I saw on reddit were like 600$, but ideally would be spending much less. Are the Google options feasible for elderly people using it only got streaming on one single TV?

    Wifi disconnects after disabling SSID

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:51 AM PST

My phone is disconnecting from wifi after I disable the SSID on my Surfboard SGB7600AC2. The modem is brand new and is replacing a SGB7400AC2 which was showing signs of degradation. The portal for the modem is exactly the same and I've done nothing other than change the network names and passwords to what were on the old modem.

I have a ring device and a roomba that appear to still be on the network with the SSID disabled, but as soon as I disable it, my pixel 3 is disconnecting from the wifi entirely.

I've removed and re-added the networks from the phone multiple times. It just says disconnected or cannot connect to both the 2.4 and 5ghz networks.

I tried contacting arris support, but all they could do is tell me I'm doing it wrong, then giving me instructions for what I already did, then asked me to do a factory reset on a modem I've done nothing to.

Edit: I found the solution, apparently when re-adding the networks to my pixel, I had to tell it to treat it as a hidden network in the advanced settings. This isn't something I used to have to do so I never looked for it. It also is only able to be done when adding a network, it cannot be changed once the network has been added to the device.

Trouble connecting D-link COVR 2202 to point A and other devices

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 01:47 AM PST

Hi everyone, I just bought a D-link COVR 2202 and set it up this morning. I initially had issues with it giving us internet connection at all. Eventually after a couple reboots, it gives internet connection now and it works on our phones and computers but our smart TV isn't getting any internet connection from it and I can't seem to get the point A to connect to the main point. I also can't seem to get the D-link app to connect to the router anymore even though I am connected to the wifi and getting a wifi connection from my phone, it still says that it can't find a device on the network.

Would anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong?

Do we need at least one wired device for internet?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:49 PM PST

The coax cable goes to my modem, then an ethernet cable to my router, and then another ethernet cable to a desktop computer. This desktop is the device that I used to configure my network and wifi settings.

Does this mean every setup needs at least one device with an ethernet port? (or an adapter if a device does not have 1) Can you still setup your network somehow without connecting an ethernet cable?

Also, will all the devices connected via wifi lose connection if I unplug the ethernet cable from my desktop? I feel like it shouldn't since wifi comes from the router, but I'm not sure...

    2. I want to stream it continuously on Facebook/another social media, live stream thing

    3. It should record clips of stream (less important)

    Segregating IOT from everything else

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:38 AM PST

    Hello

I have 3 Aruba AP11 access points in my house to provide wifi and I really like them. I'm getting to know the software on my phone, and while it may not be for everyone I like it a lot.

Recently I've been thinking about segregating my IOT devices from the rest of my network, but I'm not sure what that would involve or how to go about it. They are all on a separate wifi SSID (after some reconfiguring on my part), but now what? If I turn on restricted access, will I still get notifications about my cameras and doorbells? Will streaming to the speakers still work? They're all on the Google Home network, because that is how I started.

Wired Network capped at 93/93 although it's supposed to reach speeds around 500mbps

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 03:13 AM PST

My network is capped at 93/93 mbps. The network is wired from the modem via cat6. The connector is entered in a wall jack. And then from there it goes from one cat5e keystone to terminate at another keystone.

Before it enters the first keystone I connected my router there and tested the connection. It gave me the speed it's supposed to give me. But after entering from one wall jack and leaving through another. I tested it and it gave me 93/93 mbps.

The whole network was done by a networking company.

What should I look for here to fix my issue?

Need some help with my home network

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:38 AM PST

    Hi all,

I need some advice and help with my home network.

Previously I had an AC68u as my main router with some older routers as access points. I recently acquired some more ac68u's to use in ai-mesh mode. But there was a catch I found. Ai-mesh mode wouldn't allow me to properly use guest networks. I just couldn't get it to work and so I thought ap-mode would be a better option for me. It would give me more control.

So with the latest merlin firmware on every router I can't seem to setup up the guest network on the nodes/ap-points without intranet access. So guests can still access my local lan. With the router in AP point mode it doesn't allow me to select no intranet access. I normally hide the ssid of my main wireless and only show the guest networks. But I can't use yazfi on a non main router. Which was a great little app for more control of your guest network.

Also is there much of a difference between the 800Mhz and 1000Mhz revisions?

    Does anyone have any advice?

    Many thanks

My computer is sending broadcast messages every second. Is this normal activity?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 05:19 AM PST

    Hey everyone.

I have recently started studying network forensics analysis as part of my job, so I decided to run Wireshark for a bit on my own home PC to see if I can find anything interesting. I noticed that my machine is sending broadcast traffic EVERY SECOND to my local broadcast address, with the same message length, same ports. I tried googling this but I could not find any information to help me find out what is causing this and if this is even considered normal activity.

Any advice would be appreciated, looking to learn from this.

What options should I be looking at? Very limited internet speed, need cameras in separate building.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 05:51 AM PST

So we have very limited internet speed. 3mbps is the only option we have. My wife has goats in a barn about 500' from our house. She wants cameras in the barn to be able to check on goats that are going into labor.

I bought her a Ring setup that has a LTE data connection and does everything we need... Except it apparently EATS data and in three days has consumed the allotted bandwidth. We can keep buying extra data but it is going to get insanely expensive at this rate. Doesn't look like there is any option for reducing framerate or video quality to save on data usage.

What the heck kind of options should I be looking at? I've considered something like a wireless bridge, but given our average of 3mbps connection, I'm doubting I'll be able to utilize the cameras well?

Hoping someone can point me in a direction to get started at least.
