    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    No limit

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    All are important.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Fairly important, currently have a Surface Book 2.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15-16"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primary use will be resource intensive/GPU-used touchscreen drawing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not much gaming. Drawing software uses the GPU though.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A high quality, high black/white contrast, high resolution, accurate, quick response touchscreen. Preferably with a matte feel like a Wacom tablet. Portability, strong WiFi, and battery life are important. A nice keyboard like the Surface Book 2 would be cool.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm a physician and will use the laptop to view patient CT scans/MRIs and draw on them with extreme detail. So the quality of the touchscreen and pen use are very important. The software utilizes the GPU but since it's a primarily work laptop, portability and battery life are important as well. I currently have a Surface Book 2 and it's very good at accomplishing these tasks. However, I'm in a position where I must get a newer laptop and understand the Surface Book 3 just isn't a good upgrade. The SB2 screen is glossy and I've played with Wacom tablets that have this matte finish which makes for a smoother screen drawing experience. That would be great to have if it doesn't compromise image quality.

HP Victus 16 vs Lenovo Legion 5 (vs Dell G15)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:07 AM PST

I'm an engineering student and I noticed that my current laptop just isn't going to cut it, so I decided to buy a new one. I just need something with enough power and durable enough to last me through my time at uni and I'd like to do some light gaming on the side. Although, my dad's paying and he set a pretty tight budget. I've narrowed it down to these two but I'm not sure which to get.

    HP Victus 16 (Ryzen 5 5600H/8GB/256GB SSD/RX 5500M 4GB/16.1' FHD 60Hz) - $829

    Lenovo Legion 5 (Ryzen 5 4600H/8GB/256GB SSD + 1TB HDD/GTX 1650Ti 4GB/15.6' FHD 120Hz) - $849

I quite like the Victus 16's overall appearance and especially the keyboard, but I'm really concerned about the hinge. It wobbles a lot and I'm wondering if the hinge would break easily. The hinge is pretty much the only thing stopping me from picking the Victus, to be honest.

For the Legion 5, while I prefer the keyboard on the Victus 16, I think that the Legion 5 has a better build quality and is more durable. Plus, the screen isn't as wobbly.

There's also a third-ish option, but I'm not very sure about it.

    Dell G15 (Intel i5-10500H/8GB/512GB SSD/RTX 3050 4GB/15.6" FHD 120Hz) - $849

The Dell is, I suppose good for the price? I'm just not fond of Intel CPUs and I'm not a big fan of the G15's overall design and the keyboard is mediocre in my opinion. The arrow keys are tiny.

Which should I get? Is the HP Victus 16's wobbly screen not that big of a deal or should I be better off with the Lenovo Legion 5? What about the Dell G15? Is that worth consideration? Oh, and I can't really go much higher than the budget (~$870) my dad set, and these are probably the best I could find in my country right now. I've been bouncing between the HP Victus and the Lenovo Legion 5 for a while now, so I hope someone can help me decide.

    Acer swift X

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 01:34 AM PST

I was looking through a lot of options and found swift x the best among them(for programming and light gaming) The only problem is that in India it only provides "International travelers warranty" Does that mean i won't be able to use the warranty in India? Should I still go for it?

Just a girl who knows nothing about computers and needs a laptop please help

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:30 AM PST

Hi I hope this is the right place to come but I want a laptop, but I don't want to call Apple and get conned into something I don't need. Here's answers to the form of my top needs in a computer- Budget: $1000 Refurbs: I'd prefer new

Storage One I can take off and it becomes a iPad to draw on Something I can write essays on easily USB drive Not too big, lightweight Long battery life

I only want Apple since I have an iPhone and I take a lot of pictures and I've had other brands in the past, and moving pictures over to the laptop was always a pain and I know it's much easier to move stuff from an iPhone to an Apple computer. Thanks!

If there's any suggestions on other things I should consider/what's a good choice please let me know! Thank you ☺️

Zephyrus G15 vs Razer Blade 15 Advanced

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:34 AM PST

I am an engineering student who likes to game during free time. I've been looking into different laptops and want something that's gonna last me a couple of years, that's going to be able to run MultiSim, Quantus, MatLab, be light enough to carry around and also be strong enough to run games like RDR2 and WoW. I have a desktop at home at which I usually game, but I want to be able to play on my laptop during the weekend mostly when I'm not at home.

    I am currently torn between these two: 1) Asus ROG Zephyrus G15: QHD 165hz Ryzen 5900hs 16GBs of Ram Rtx 3080 Max-Q 1Tb m.2 SSD €2.199

    2) Razer Blade 15 Advanced QHD 165hz i7-11800H 16GBs of Ram Rtx 3070 1Tb m.2 SSD €2.299

Been also considering the newest McBook Pro 14' base model but I'm worried about gaming performance. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Best laptop around $150 - $300 for basic writing and taking exams.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 08:15 AM PST

Hi, I need a portable device for mainly taking exams on Windows software (no Chromebooks) as I will be using another device for note-taking alongside my main desktop PC.

Pros of this laptop would be that it's lightweight, has a good battery life, and isn't completely sluggish. Additionally, it would be nice if the screen looks good but that's not a deal breaker. Thanks.

    Edit: In the U.S.

Should I replace my current Lenovo IdeaPad 700 with a black friday deal Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:02 AM PST

Okay reddit, since it seems to be the last day of black friday deals for best buy and I've been going back and forth in my mind, I figured I'd ask you guys what your thoughts would be.

I currently have a Lenovo IdeaPad 700 from 2017. The Amazon link is listed below. I didn't realize at the time that it had a 1TB HDD, so over the lifespan of the laptop, I've cloned the hard drive twice, once to a 1TB SSHD and then again to a 2TB HDD. I usually use my laptop for music production, photography, and some videography, hence the need for space. As time has gone on though, the computer has gotten unusably slow and I've tried everything I could think of. Disk space is always close to or at 100% and I've tried all the fixes, reset windows entirely, and done hard drive checks, only for everything to still be slow. Even right now, after a factory reset (while keeping my files) it's still so slow. I don't even bother trying to open up an FL Studio file anymore, as just getting the laptop from hibernating to opening the program could take anywhere from 15-45 minutes.

I've been looking at getting the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 from best buy for $999, which is $500 off. It seems like too good a deal to pass up. It's an Intel i7 processor vs i5, has 16GB RAM vs 12GB, and has a 1TB SSD vs a 2TB SSHD (I could probably cut down that space anyway).

It seems like a good deal and a worth to upgrade, but I was hoping to hear thoughts before I commit. Maybe I'm missing something with my current laptop. Maybe a fresh install of Windows 11 could fix things (if I'm running into problems because of Windows 10). Maybe I need to bite the bullet and just upgrade and be able to have a usable laptop for once, let alone a presumably smooth experience. What are your thoughts? Thank you all for your time.

    2 in 1 laptop choice :)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 03:07 AM PST

    Hii!

I want to buy a new laptop. For now I have a MacBook Air mid 2013, but I really want a 2 in 1 laptop!

It would be great if I could buy one compatible to solidworks (quadro graphics card), but I can't find it.. So if someone had any suggestion for compatible 2 in 1 it would be great.

For now I have my eye on the yoga 7i or ideapad flex 5. With the same specs the ideapad is about 300euros/334dollar cheaper..

Otherwise the HP envy would also be a possibility (with mx450 graphic card).

Can anyone help me out and give me some advice for the Best Buy?

    Thx in advance :D

ROG Strix G15 vs Legion 5 vs Legion 7 (RTX 3070/Ryzen/16GB)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 06:48 AM PST

Hi, so basically I'm stuck between these 3 laptops and I don't know which to choose.
In the table below I have included the most important parameters for me and the temperatures are indicative based on what I was able to find in the video reviews and technical catalogs.
Each of them has a distinguishing advantage, but I cannot convince myself of any of them 100%, I would like to choose Legion 7, I think I like it the most (well, all customizable RGB, vapor chamber cooling, 500nits and the highest TGP) but its price is much higher compared to the others (in my currency). A budget sufficient for its purchase, but I would need an even stronger argument for its purchase, or a stronger one in favor of the other two, to let go of it (e.g. the rest of the budget for replacing the stock RAM / buying an SSD etc).
The webcam and MUX are strongly in favor of both Legions, in favor of Asus there is a higher gen processor and a favorable price. I use up to 3 external screens, so I wouldn't have to plug and unplug anything with the Legion.
Purpose of the laptop: gaming, dev, multitasking, rather nothing to do with graphics, the vast majority of the time connected to the wall, Linux support highly appreciated (and I know lenovo's are doing well with it)
Thanks in advance, have a nice day!

Simple laptop I can get my hands on

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:07 AM PST

Hi all, I am looking for a laptop. I'm going to start attending classes soon so I just need a laptop that will be able to open up three or so windows: A google docs tab, a google drive tab and a browsing tab. I am being cheap because I already own a PC, and if I'm investing money it should probably go to that since I'm spending more time on it

→ build here, if interested (yes, I am planning on upgrading the GPU)

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/17MoBZILZfsyv2H7UUPVQtqRGIQG4VPoGZ6sgjxQ3WOs/edit#heading=h.81q5l3umi5ey

I was thinking of getting a Chromebook due to the simplicity of what I want to use the laptop for. I am also heavily invested in google's software, my next phone will (probably) be a google pixel, and I use google's cloud storage for all my important files.

I'm more of a PC guy, and not very into laptops, so any advice is much appreciated!

    Latitude 3580 Intel Core i5-7200U 8 GB vsDell Precision 5520 i7-7820HQ @ 2.9 GHz 16GB

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 11:55 PM PST

Hi, I have to choose between these two models. The purpose is work (typing Reports, using ms teams simultaneously, also running Firefox with quite a lot of addons). I currently use an x250 with an i5 6300 and 16gb of ram. I can get the 3580 for about 280 usd and the Precision for about 400 usd. Which is the better buy regarding longevity and value for money and why? The x250 thinkpad cannot always keep up especially when teams is running and I have Come to prefer a 15" screen. Any motivated opinion is welcome.

    Best Casual Gaming Laptop(s)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 05:48 AM PST

So the only game I actually play on laptop is ~Sims~. I've always played everything else on console. I know nothing in terms of computer specs or what to look for in certain laptops. I'm hoping someone here can help me out!

There are a few things I would like:

    • be able to play with high graphics - which for the Sims isn't even that demanding, I'm assuming?
    • have a long battery life
    • lightweight if possible
    • under 2K, would like closer to 1.5K

    XPS 15 vs MacBook Pro M1 13"

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:27 PM PST

I'm currently torn between the MacBook Pro M1 13" and the Dell XPS 15". I'm a computer science student at college and tend to use my laptop a lot.

They're both comparable in price right now with the following specs:

    Macbook M1 with 8GB RAM + 256 GB

    XPS 9510 i5 with 8GB RAM + 256 GB

I've been a Windows user my whole life, and have heard incredible things about the new M1 which is making me consider switching, but the 13" screen seems just too small. I've always used a 15" Windows laptop and I'm used to the size, and I'm wary of making the switch to a smaller display. I have a monitor but also work a lot on the go, so I'm wondering if the tradeoff between screen size and performance is that significant? It might be worth saying that my current laptop has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8250U CPU with 8GB and it's served me well so far ... but I've never tried a higher-performance laptop to know the difference? I would really love to switch to the Mac - it has such a great design - but the screen size is holding me back. Wondering if anyone's been in the same situation before? I've also had issues in the past with lower-end Dell products (screens breaking and charging issues).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - ~$1300 in the USA
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      - Preferably no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Performance = build quality > battery life > form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - Not particularly important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - No gaming; just general programming workloads
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - n/a
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-Reliable build quality is important, but don't care about touch screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - screen size vs. performance
