Should I feel bad for not being a Gentoo chad? I don't have any problems with Mint. Do I have any reason to use another more 'advanced'(like Arch/Gentoo) distro? Am I missing something?

I was wondering if there is a need for an anti-virus or anti-malware software for linux?

Unable to install Linux, PCIe error (x-post /r/linuxquestions)

Hey everyone, sorry for crossposting if not allowed.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/oktj0w/reinstalling_ubuntu_pcie_error_while_trying_ubuntu/

Old thread with my struggles installing Ubuntu. I've since tried Ubuntu, Deepin, Slax and Debian all to no success. I'm thinking it's something in my BIOS, I'll edit with any relevant information after I post. The Ubuntu installer just freezes regardless of selections, though since my original post to /r/linuxquestions I've gotten further before it crashes. Deepin gave me an error about how it needs root, iirc.

How can I run MS paint in Linux?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 10:01 PM PDT

I downloaded some MS paint exe from different sources but none of them run. I tried Run on Linux and Wine but no luck. I tried the alternative (Pinta) but I find it difficult to use.

Dual Monitor set up on Manjaro. Laptop sleeps however external monitor does not

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:50 AM PDT

    Hey!

I usually switch off my system every night but yesterday I had some work which needed my laptop to be turned on over night. I usually turn off the second monitor but yesterday I forgot to switch it off.

Cut to today morning, my laptop's screen was off however the other monitor was on the entire night, i think. It showed the default lock screen. How do I fix this?

The most similar item I could find is this askUbuntu forum but I don't have that video card (I think).

Here's the output for my system:

$ lspci| grep -i "video \| display \| vga" 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07)

    and

$ sudo lshw -class video *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: UHD Graphics 620 vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0 version: 07 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pciexpress msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:142 memory:db000000-dbffffff memory:50000000-5fffffff ioport:f000(size=64) memory:c0000-dffff

If there are any other commands that I need to run, please let me know.

I'm running Plasma 5.22.4 on Manjaro.

    Thank you!

How can i copy data from an internal hard drive which used to be used on Windows 10 onto Pop OS

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 04:09 AM PDT

So i switched to POP OS yesterday. Before, i was running Windows 10. On my computer, i have three hard drives. I have one SSD, and two HDD's. When i was running windows, i hosted a Minecraft server locally for about 20 people. Unfortunately, when migrating over to POP, i forgot to copy some of the most important server files. I've installed POP on my SSD, and i have not yet formatted my HDD's. What i'd like to know, is there a way i can read the files from one of those HDD's and copy over those server files before i wipe the hard drive? Thanks if anyone can help!

Manjaro Problem with resolution when starting the system

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 09:25 AM PDT

Hi. I've got a really weird problem.

I've got a laptop that's connected to a 1400p monitor over HDMI. I only use the monitor, so I have a script that changes the resolution and disables the built-in screen.

At first i get LightDM on both screens in 1080p. That's fine, then when I log in i3 executes this script:

    exec --no-startup-id ~/Scripts/one-ext-monitor.sh 2560x1440 #!/bin/bash #check if any external monitor is connected EXT=$(xrandr --listactivemonitors | grep -v -e Monitors -e eDP1 | awk 'NF>1{print $NF}') #if yes, disable built-in screen [ -n "$EXT" ] && xrandr --output eDP1 --off #if called with an argument, try using it as an resolution [ -z "$1" ] && exit 0 if ! xrandr --output ${EXT} --mode ${1}; then #if this xrandr call failed, try again with 'auto' xrandr --output ${EXT} --auto fi

And it works, but there is some bug. When I open any window, suddenly half of me screen is cut down, top of the screen is just black. Also my mouse cursor is drawn too high, that means I have to aim blindly with the mouse if I want to click something. I have to change my resolution to 4k (yes, somehow I can set a 4k resolution on this 1440p only monitor) and then back to 1440p to make it work normal. Changing to 1080p and then 1440p doesn't solve this problem. Any ideas what causes this ?

    It's Thinkpad T490 CPU: Intel i5-8365U (8) @ 4.100GHz GPU: Intel WhiskeyLake-U GT2 [UHD Graphics 620] Kernel: 5.10.53-1-MANJARO

Installing Ubuntu Server and then i3wm

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 09:22 AM PDT

I've been using Ubuntu on my laptop since January as a noob to Linux. Recently I discovered i3wm and started using Regolith Desktop on my regular old Ubuntu install. I absolutely love it. Out of curiosity about what you can do with Linux, I thought about stripping things down, since I never use anything but Regolith now. Seems I can install the Ubuntu server image and then install i3wm from there. I think I can figure that out, but does anyone have any suggestions or cautions perhaps about doing this? The same goes for moving my settings. I'm using a Lenovo Legion 5 and it took me a second to find the right settings. Any helpful secrets to keeping the settings I have for switching GPU would be super helpful (this post has more on the GPU issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/mmptqi/lenovo_legion_5_ubuntu_2004_final_guide_dream/)

Everything is working find but for some reason when I plug in headphones the jack on my system it has not worked properly. It still does not work and I have no idea what I should do about it now? Please let me know what I should do. I am using an Asus Republic of Gamers laptop. Thanks a ton.

How to stop windows from stealing focu

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:57 PM PDT

It's quite frequent for me to be typing and some random window pops up, most recently an update notifier from Ubuntu, and because I'm in the middle of typing I'll hit space and accept whatever the fuck just happened without even a shot at reading it.

How do I stop this from ever happening again?

edit: let's pretend I didn't make a typo in that title and another window stole my keyboard 😉

    Archlinux suddenly freezes

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 01:06 AM PDT

Sometimes when (as I observed) doing more intense work (ex. having more browser tabs and apps open) my Arch desktop suddenly freezes and displays the last desktop frame. It sometimes happens when opening an app or randomly. A very small percentage of times it just "stutters" and comes back. I have checked the memory and it's at like 70%. It's really annoying and frankly I have no idea how to approach the issue. I heard of this GO tool called ryzen-stabilizer? I have read similar issues but I have no idea what's happening.

Ryzen 3200G 8GB DDR4. I currently use GNOME (on Arch).

Will different line endings conflict across operating systems?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 11:34 AM PDT

Hey, basically im using linux with ruby scripts to automate my work for the windows world (automatically editing scripts windows software has to read)

The original file comfing from windows has \r\n line ending, after ruby manipulates the files on my linux machine the line endings are just \n.

Will this cause problems when i copy the \n ending file back to windows or is this save?

Boot hard drive not recognizing free space?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:58 AM PDT

I used Clonezilla to clone my 1TB M.2 NVMe boot drive to a faster 2TB model. My Linux desktop boots with the newer drive, but lsblk still only gives me access to 1TB (923GB) instead of the full 2TB (1.8T):

    NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT nvme0n1 259:0 0 1.8T 0 disk ├─nvme0n1p1 259:1 0 498M 0 part /boot/efi ├─nvme0n1p2 259:2 0 8.5G 0 part /recovery ├─nvme0n1p3 259:3 0 1.8T 0 part │ └─cryptdata_I4hK8 253:0 0 1.8T 0 crypt │ └─data_9Z08A-root 253:1 0 923G 0 lvm / └─nvme0n1p4 259:4 0 8G 0 part └─cryptswap 253:2 0 8G 0 crypt [SWAP]

Why does data_9Z08A-root (my / mount) only show 923GB of total space and how do I reclaim the rest of the 1.8T in cryptdata_I4hK8?

[EDIT] In case it's helpful, here's what I get when running parted -l:
