| Choosing a laptop for my university (Computer Science) Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:48 AM PDT As the title stated, I'm looking to get a laptop for my studies in Computer Science and I'm having difficulty in selecting a laptop, however I've narrowed it down to a brand/model(s) I'm interesting in however there's 2 different kind of similar model, the only difference is : Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 Processor VS AMD Ryzen 7 4700U 8-Core I think it all comes down to prices where as the one with Intel is much expensive at about 40-50% more but would it be worth it at all? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 01:41 PM PDT Going to be studying CS at university, with a budget of £1000 I've selected a few laptops that I can save some money on with Unidays. -XPS 13 9310 with i5-1135G7, 8gb, 500nits @ £899 -HP Spectre x360 14 with i5-1135G7, 8gb, 400nits @ £1019 -Inspiron 14 7000 with i7-1165G7, 16gb, 300nits @ £782 In spite of the performance advantage given by the Inspiron I am more drawn to the other 2 laptops as they have much brighter displays. The only reason I would get the Inspiron is if the spec from the other two laptops would be insufficient for programming. So my questions are: Would a CS student benefit from having a 2 in 1 laptop? Is it useful outside of art? Is 8gb enough for programming? Is 300nits bright enough for media and programming? Are there any laptops that you would recommend instead of the ones I've listed? Before the start of the semester, I was thinking about upgrading the RAM and and SSD. Would getting just a single stick of any another brand 8gb RAM work or should I get 2x8gb RAM so they're exactly matching? If I got just a single stick, would the MHz have to match? I believe that the i5-7300U has a max of 32gb ram while also being limited to 2133MHz. For the SSD, can I get something like this? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 12:28 PM PDT Hey guys so I put this m2 drive in my acer aspire e15 and it works perfectly, it has windows installed and I can put files and read files just great BUT, it will not show up in the boot menu so I cant make it the boot drive and also if I remove the other ssd the machine wont post at all with just the m2, what's wrong? I touched it and it felt like water and it didn't smell like anything. I booted up my laptop and it seems to be working fine. Is it possible that this liquid came from my laptop? Should I be worried?
