How to give full permissions to secondary drive?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:16 PM PDT

I recently got into Manjaro, and I've had no issues with it until I partitioned my second drive, where it only has read permissions and nothing else. I want to be able to put games on here since it is bigger but I haven't found any way to give full permissions to programs on here. How would I do this?

Ubuntu boots to a black screen after installation(MBP 2015)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:07 AM PDT

I have installed Ubuntu by first choosing 'Something Else' in the drive section and creating a fat32 EFI partition and a EXT4 partition for rootfs. But when I boot into the drive using the boot menu of my MBP 13" 2015 there is a black screen and no read and write on my SSD after initialisation of the drive to boot.

I am not using a Nvidia MBP and its from 2015 so no T1 chip. I have been stuck on this issue for the last 2 weeks, please HELP.

    Cannot boot manjaro live usb

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:36 AM PDT

I can't get the manjaro live USB to boot... It baffles me that they use this weird dd format. It's an old laptop without secure boot or UEFI. The USB just shows GRUB and that's it. In another try I managed to get the boot menu in manjaro but got an error while booting mentioning bad block and sysfs issue. The iso is fine, the USB stick is fine, xubuntu works on this laptop. I tried Rufus and another program to make the USB and got the same result.

Is there anyway to download a "real" bootable iso for manjaro ? In Google I found that someone recommended to use an old version of Linux kernel for this to work. This seems like a crazy complicated process to just get the iso to boot, so maybe Xubuntu is better suited after all.

After booting, Linux Mint does not show GUI.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:33 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I tried to install Linux Mint so that I can dual-boot it with Windows 10. I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2. While booting from the USB, I could see the GUI. But, after installing, it no longer does that. This is what is shows.

    https://preview.redd.it/7jhis2h9vy871.jpg?width=4160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7afe99f8fb9c266b7c0ffccf9f089b2824b62be9

If I click Ctrl+Alt+F1, this closes and I get a command to enter my username and password. After I do, it just shows me the terminal. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F7, it brings me back to this. I'm not able to reach the desktop interface.

I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me with this.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:13 AM PDT

I managed to make MusicBee work on Linux but it require from me to create Music library in order to continue to use it. But if I point it to my Music folder in my Home folder, it gives me an error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and "ErrorLog.dat was not found".

    Any fix?

What happens to my Windows 10 digital license once i replace it with Fedora?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:53 PM PDT

There's literally one thing holding me back when it comes to completely replacing windows 10 with Fedora on my Asus Zenbook and it's Windows 10 digital license. Will I lose it the moment i completely remove windows from my device? There are some caveats regarding any linux distro on asus laptops which im not really sure about which make me feel like i need to be sure ill be able to install it once again with it's license. Thanks a lot in advance for any help!

Also do you think Fedora is the way to go? I do have some linux system administration knowledge and would love to avoid ubuntu as it just bugs me with it's snap repos...

[Ubuntu] Blurry text one external monitor

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 03:29 PM PDT

I have a laptop ( smaller monitor: 1920x1080) connected to external monitor via HDMI (bigger 1920x1080).

On my laptop monitor, I can read text perfectly with zero strain, text is sharp and smooth.

On the external monitor, text is blurry and incredibly annoying to read. When I focus I can even see that the font is made out of pixels, which is not possible on the laptop monitor.

I have tried googling but I found nothing useful, and I am honestly thinking about going back to Windows to check if it works there.

Is there a way to mount Linux root directories like var, usr, and etc, into a folder (not partition) inside an external HDD?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:27 PM PDT

Hello. I am currently dual booting Windows 10 and Manjaro Linux on a 128 GB SSD. I strictly want to use this SSD as a boot drive and off load my storage onto a 1 TB external HDD. I have partitioned this HDD into two partitions with file systems, NTFS and EXT4, for Windows and Linux files respectively, and have successfully installed my personal Windows programs on to the NTFS partition. Since Linux uses a different way of storing installed packages, I wanted to see if it was possible to store them onto the EXT4 partition of the HDD.

I have already done some of the steps advised in this forum thread, however, it only shows how to mount a root directory (in that case, /var) onto a partition in an HDD. I, on the other hand, want to create a folder in a partition which would serve the same purpose as if it were in the root directory. For example, have something like /hdd/var function as /var, instead of having an entire partition in the HDD function like the /var directory (as the thread suggests doing).

    Thank you in advance!

POP OS boot option disappeared from boot menu.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:07 AM PDT

I dual booted Pop os with windows 10, I used to get two more options in the boot menu 'efi' then 'pop' and the last option as POP OS with its version and something else to, I don't remember exactly.

I don't know why but now I'm getting this boot from efi file option only and the other two options complely disappeared.

Now I have to go into boot from efi option and select efi then boot then select BOOTx64.efi to boot into pop. Please help to make that option which lets me to boot into pop os directly appear again. Also how do I make POP appear on top of this boot option list.

    Manjaro Printer

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 05:47 PM PDT

I installed "Manjaro xfc" in my old pc and when it asked me to put in a password i put none , my dad is going to use it and he'd rather not have to put a pass everytime.

Everything is working except for 1 thing, which is the Printer, i can't "sudo apt-get update" because i have no password, he needs the printer, it's an old Epson TX 400 , any way to get it working? i'd rather not have to go back to windows so if anyone knows how to get the printer working that'd be awesome.

    And the scanner too btw.

    I can't uninstall pulseaudio

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I just updated POP OS and my non default DE changed. Why?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 11:03 AM PDT

Besides a Kernel update the main updates on the new version of POP OS are about is default DE. I upgraded for the sake of it.

The wierd thing is that my KDE plasma chages slightly. The date now appears next to the time and the volume and brightnes slides went from big scuares to more elegant rectangles, and they now display a number to know how loud it is.

I like the chages, I am just asking bacuase I don't understad why it happened.

Left side of Headset stopped working after Ubuntu

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 11:00 AM PDT

Hi, my HyperX Cloud II headset only works properly when I have the 7.1 switch turned on. I prefer to use my headset without the 7.1, but the left side speaker stopped working after I switched from Windows 10 to Ubuntu. It worked fine on Windows so it's certainly not a hardware problem. I believe the microphone works fine as well. I just want both speakers to play sound without having to turn on 7.1 settings.

Has anyone been faced with the same problem? I would appreciate any help/guidance please. Thanks.

    Kubernetes help.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:07 PM PDT

I had a tough time attempting to set up Kubernetes. I will try to create a cluster and then I have to go back to a previous step and get stuck on the what I am trying to do. I can't move on till I complete the step I am on sadly said. It's impossible to move on without first completing the step. Any tips and tricks will be beneficial at this point. The older question I am searching for on /r/linux4noobs seem a bit dated. And my question is since I am using a canonical product does that mean I'm not allowed to use open source software?

Can't check health of external USB Seagate HDD with SMART monitoring tools

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 12:13 PM PDT

My external HDD has been slowing down a bit lately so I wanted to check it, but when I execute:

    sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdb

    I get:

Read Device Identity failed: scsi error unsupported field in scsi command A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

Works fine on my other built in HDD and SSD though.
