Do all routers eventually just start to die (nighthawk R7000)? (Need a replacement)

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:59 PM PDT

Right now running a Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT. Ive been experiencing a lot of issues lately and have to reboot often. This happened to my last router a few years back as well.

Do all routers eventually start to "crap" out?

Im guessing this is pretty outdated as well - so might as well upgrade to something better. I'm not so sure I need DDWRT anymore, since the majority of the time im not home, im connected to all sorts of wifi (and use a vpn), so I guess I really dont care if I have it anymore.

Budget is around 200 - range has been fine on this, but wouldnt mind a little boost. I know new wifi standards have been released since then, so an update would be nice.

I do a lot of gaming (mostly LAN, but I have friends come over and use wifi), so any extra GAMING features i guess would be cool, but im assuming they all probably offer the same thing, just some get their prices jacked up for GAMING purposes.

Two routers, two separate networks, how to have computers connect to other network?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:53 PM PDT

Title is confusing, and I apologize for that. I am not sure how to explain it.

At my work, the internet is shared between me and the business downstairs.

Downstairs business is the one getting internet, they have their own routers, etc. We also have our own router, and we get the internet through their router. Their network is 192.168.1.x and ours are 192.168.2.x.

Thing is, the IP camera's and DVR is connected to our network, and due to an incident, the business downstairs needs access to the DVR and IP cameras. It's Reolink, if that matters. I'm not worried about our computers and servers -- from what I understand it's already secured and has whitelists.

How do I make that happen? My search terms is too generalize and I'm not sure how to phrase it.

I just picked up mesh router (XT8) but totally didn’t think about how I’ll set it up with my Netgear C7000 modem/wifi router. Do I need a new modem or do I just need to disable wifi the Netgear?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:29 PM PDT

Can I still use the extra ports on the Netgear as well? It's a cable modem. Sorry if this is a newb question!

    Running landline Phone through Cat6

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:09 PM PDT

My family may be moving into a newer house that has Cat6 (at least the keystones are Cat6) wired through the house, terminating at an area where a patch panel can be installed. My parents and grandparents insist on keeping their landline phone, and the termination for the cables is in the garage, meaning that the modem with the RJ11 port would be in there, far away from where the phone would be set up. I have access to both ends of the cable, but would rather not change the keystone. Would it be possible to run the RJ11 signal from the RJ45 port, into the RJ11 port in a landline phone?

160sqm condo in an old building with concrete walls. A good Wifi router or just Mesh it?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 07:57 PM PDT

Getting married in 3 months and moving into a single floor low-rise 160sqm condo in an oldish building (30 years or so) with concrete walls. Yes I know people will say run some Cat6 through the thing, but I don't own said condo and we own a lot of wifi devices, so wifi is really the way to go.

The floor plan is relatively open, with the only hurdles being a concrete wall that will stand directly between the router and the office/guestroom. Almost entirely line of sight with all the rest of the rooms with just one corridor to the kids room. I'd like good 5Ghz coverage through the entire thing, and my experience with dual band range extenders have been spotty at best.

Should a good high end router be enough or just run a mesh istead?

What's the best way to bind the IP of an application to a network connection in 2021?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 01:46 AM PDT

I have two different network connections with different physical layers (one via WiFi and one via Ethernet) and I want bind an app (e.g. chrome) to one connection while other apps use the other connection. As I've researched, I found out that the most suggested way to do this is by using ForceBindIP, which is an old software and doesn't work with most of the windows 10 apps I want to bind. Not to mention other issues like not being consistent and working only sometimes, or not working with my VPN (even though the VPN is in split-tunnel mode and doesn't touch the packets of the app I want to bind). So I wanted to ask if there is a better way to do this if you're not a network engineer but have the basic knowledge. I also can't believe Microsoft hasn't integrated this crucial (in my opinion) feature into windows even to this day.

    Router randomly disconnecting. Need help!

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:02 AM PDT

Hello, so I recently switched to a Fiber connection. Since then I'm having issues with my WiFi dropping, I'm always having 4 strength bars so it can't be something to do with that, and this is weird but, to give an example of what exactly happens, I was playing Valorant yesterday and I got disconnected from my internet, like when I open my WiFi settings on Windows, it says, connected No Internet, BUT BUT, this is the weird part, I'm still able to hear my teammates in game for the next few minutes and them telling that I'm AFK. They can't hear me though. At first I thought this was an issue with my laptop's wifi card but apparently not since I lose connection on my iPad and iPhone aswell. Oh to add on, It's a new router, and I called up my ISP, they said there's nothing wrong from their end, so I'm clueless. This happens more frequently on my 5Ghz connection than my 2.4Ghz, either way it happens. If you've any idea about how to fix this or if you could identify the problem, it'd be great

Device no matter what i try will not disconnect from my network

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 11:49 PM PDT

This problem first stemmed from my old Xbox 360 not being able to connect to our home wifi.

First, it couldnt locate the routers ip, so i went and manually set a static ip for it which also didnt work. Afterwards I set the ip back to automatic. That led me to going into my routers settings and trying to enable port forwarding, which was a suggestion i read online somewhere, but from there i realized that the network tells me the xbox is somehow still connected, yet i had completely unplugged it. So I plug it back in, cleared all network settings, and unplugged it again, and it still shows up on the list of connected users. So i change both the name and password of the network, which disconnects every device from the network, but somehow this thing is STILL connected. It's the only thing still connected other than the tv box which is connected via ethernet cable.

There is no clear or block device option in my routers settings either from what i can tell. I don't even want to fix the internet issue anymore i just want to remove it from my network all together but I am out of options here. Does anyone know what I'm not understanding here?

I have a wifi deap spot at home, I connected a cat 6 cable from my wifi router to that area. The cable gives a speed of 250 Mbps on my laptop, but when I connected a new wifi router to that cable and put it on DHCP the speed dropped to 30mbps, why did this happen ?

Tone generator has two mysterious options.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 11:28 PM PDT

What do the "TONE" and "CONT" options do on the emitter unit?

The corresponding LEDs don't come on when I try to use those modes and there's no mention of their functions in the manual, box or even in the Amazon listing:

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01HCQSHNG

Note that my device looks like the colour photo (i.e. no BNC jack on the bottom), not like the page from the manual (which does show a BNC port).

Is it possible that the "TONE" and "CONT" modes are only enabled on the model with a BNC port?

    https://i.imgur.com/Y7kOZ3o.png

    https://i.imgur.com/9paGl3p.png

The "NETWORK" option causes it to behave like a continuity tester (i.e. it tests the 8 internal wires).

The "SCAN" option causes it to behave like a tone generator (with a high-low-high-low tone - there seems to be no option for a continuous pitch).

The emitter simply behaves like it's still powered off when set to either "TONE" or "CONT".

Any ideas what's going on here? 🤔

Sudden internet speed decrease after move

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:54 PM PDT

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong sub, I'm not quite sure if this counts as "networking"

I recently moved from one apartment to another. I have a Netgear CM500 modem and a Netgear AC1000 router that I bought last July. I have a 1000 mbps down plan from Comcast/Xfinity that was working fine at the old place, but since moving and transferring the service my speed has dipped to like 20 mbps. Xfinity support is no help (shocker) and they recommended sending out a technician, which would cost $100 just for them to come out, and additional costs for any fix. Is there anything I should look into to try and fix it myself? Or do I just need to bite the bullet and pay for the tech?

Telnet failing to connect to my router?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:22 PM PDT

(Summary/Question at the end) Heya, I'm getting weird packet loss where there shouldn't be when gaming. Looking into it my Series X reports 0% packet loss while Apex Legends reports 2% packet loss on every server. This is combined with packet loss symbols appearing in other games i play such as Modern Warfare and Gears of war.

I remembered a problem with my older Xbox where the MTU was set to 1500 but my xbox reported an MTU of 1480. I can't see my MTU through my current provider so i went into CMD to ping Packet sizes to get an idea of what was happening. I get 100% Packet fragmentation and loss on an MTU above 1478 which I assume is at least 1 fragment of a fragmented packet being lost per packet rather than all fragments being lost (As my games are just very laggy, Not unplayable)

1470 didn't need to be fragmented so i went to set it through Telnet but the problem surfaced.

Question* When trying to log into my Router via command "Telnet 192.168.1.1" i get "Could not open connection to the host, On port 23: Connect failed."

Any ideas? My goal is simply to lower my Routers MTU but it's currently not working. I've tried disabling my firewall for a sec and even port forwarded Port 23 but nothing worked. My next attempt is to factory reset it-connect my laptop and test it again but i wanted to see if there was an easier fix

High ping when ethernet is plugged into router

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:13 PM PDT

Posted this earlier but now I have some clues that might be of use to someone else.

Background: Whenever I plug my ethernet cable to my modem, my ping is very low (30ms). When I connect my cable to the router, ping is very high (90ms). I've tried everything from switching cables to buying a new router and I still get this same issue.

When I set my router to access point mode, my ping instantly drops to 30ms same as if I was plugged into my modem.

    What should I do now?

    Looking for home network advice

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:04 PM PDT

This should be easy... but I've found it difficult to get clear direction. My current home network is using 15 year-old equipment. I have fiber to the house, then coax to a modem, but the wifi built into the modem sucks. My ISP only offers new equipment via rental, which is crazy.

I want to set up something like in this diagram. But having difficulty finding exactly what it is I need to get.

At a minimum, I just want to set-up the right side of this. My existing setup is basically the left side of this diagram. But all the wifi extenders I find have no ethernet input. I want that sucker wired-in, not repeating the weak wifi signal from my existing all-in-one modem-router-wifi box.

Alternately, I'm fine with all new hardware, but it's not clear what exactly I'm looking for, and how to determine what'll be compatible with what I have now. The sad thing is, i'm actually a EE, but it's been years since I've had to touch any of this, and my day job is far removed from networking. So, I can figure stuff out, but need some pointing. Anyway, just looking for any advice or guidance... I'll be super grateful!

So basically I just woke up and, my isp just changed my WiFi settings using the main pc without even logging on the WiFi admin page, they just changed the password to the WiFi without using the Internet, the main pc is not connected to the WiFi, but it connects through ethernet, yet the ethernet doesn't connect also, Im wondering if they hacked my router? Can someone tell pls I'm paranoid I think they may be reading my logs.

Internet constantly going up and down. Any easy way to track it?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:44 PM PDT

    Howdy,

I'm wondering if any knows of a utility of some sort that can issue a ping to Google or some other public place every minute or so and track when it succeeds and when it fails. If I can then make a chart of graph of the results, that'd be great to.

If there's no utility that can do this, I guess I can do something with powershell but don't want to reinvent the wheel of I don't have to.

    Thanks!

Need a Parts List for Running Cables

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:35 PM PDT

I convinced my wife that I can run ethernet in the house we're building. The builder is fine with it, but we're getting close to game time (3-4 months out) and I'm freaking out.

I'm going to run CAT6a, solid copper 23awg in the walls. I want to run to keystone jacks for the faceplates, and keystone jacks to a patch panel (I plan on buying patch cables from the walls to devices and patch panel to switch, etc.)

I'm looking for a parts list. I've looked at a lot of links to tools in a number of posts, and watched several YouTube videos on how to do it. But I'm still unsure about what I need.

I want this to be as dead simple and labor-efficient as possible. The punch down jacks that don't require you to untwist all the pairs look great. What jacks should I buy? Is the punch down tool the most labor efficient, or do they make a crimper that is a little easier to use (or do those tend to be for passthrough jacks)?

I want to purchase the tools so I can practice a bit before the builder gives me the thumbs up to go run a bunch of wire. I believe I need:

    • The wire
    • A stripper/crimper/punch down tool
    • Jacks
    • Wall plates
    • Patch panel
    • Line tester?

Any help that will straighten me out would be greatly appreciated.

    Rebuilding home network, advise needed

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:32 PM PDT

I'm currently running a slapped together home network that consist of two wireless gateways (one is an old ISP issued NVG468MQ they didn't want it back, so I stuck it in the garage and turned off wireless, the other is sitting next to the computer, an Asus RT-AC68U ).

The current network runs from a Ziply ONT to the NVG468MQ, which runs a single cable to a Netgear GS10E (a v2, I think?) switch, and from that three cables are run, 2 to the 'office' and one all the way over from the garage to the Asus gateway next to me. The Netgear GS10E was purchased when my wife went Work From Home due to COVID-19, and I errantly thought she'd need VLAN support, but turns out to be unneeded. Whatever. I had a day to get a wall up and cables run from the garage to the new office space, so I didn't exactly have time to consider how best to run things around.

My wife surprised me with a new computer (told me to pick my parts, order 'em and assemble) for my birthday which comes with a 2.5Gbit network port, and a built in Wireless AX network connection. Now that things are settling down, and I've gotten my 2nd pay raise in 3 months, I'm considering rebuilding the home network, and installing some wireless POE APs, as my wife and younger child states that the wifi signal is spotty to non-existent depending on where they're at in the bedrooms.

We just went through the PNW heat dome where our outside tempt reached 117F, and the garage went over 130F (Our needle thermometer didn't go over that, and the needle was past 130), so I'm wanting to move our networking stuff into the house, the office, specifically.

The house is a 1650 sq ft ranch with an quarter acre backyard. The office and garage is on the south end, and the bedrooms are on the north end, with the living room, and kitchen in the middle. My computer is just south of the bedrooms, separated by a double wall. The previous homeowner remodeled the master's bedroom by adding a closet on the south wall, and put a ensuite bathroom where the old closet used to be. for whatever reason he decided he needed to build a new box, hence the double wall. Yes, there is a freaking drywall in the middle of all this. This might explain why the girls aren't getting solid WiFi signals in the bedroom.

The plan is to run a network cable into the office, along the wall in conduits instead of diagonally over rafters, and into a router. From the router, I'd like to run 3 cables, one to an wireless AP on the inner side of the office (north office wall), and two cables to the double wall. One I'll run directly into the master's (north side of double wall) and set up a 2nd wireless AP, and the other will run on the south side of the double wall to my computer.

Obviously, I'd like to at least have some future proofing, as I have one 802.11AX device, and all of our mobile phones are at the point where they need to be replaced, so I imagine sometimes in the near future we're going to be having more 802.11ax devices. I also have, as I mentioned before, a computer with a 2.5Gbit ethernet.

Looking online for a multi-gig router isn't working well for me, as I keep getting multi-gig switches.

Should I just get some kind of router, as Ziply only offers at most 1gbit (that may change at some point), and use a multi-gig PoE network switch instead, for example, this netgear? [Amazon link]

I'd love to consider a Ubiquiti ecosystem, but for whatever reason they don't seem to offer any of the current networking options (2.5/5gbe, 802.11ax), unless I'm not searching their site properly?

I'd prefer an all in one eco system so when things goes wrong, I can yell at one vendor. At the same time, I'd prefer a system that doesn't uses any form of cloud support. I jumped on the nest bandwagon when it first came out, and rarely ever communicate with the thing since then outside of the house.

Also, at some point in the near future, I want to set up a home lab in the office, as my wife will be going back to work her worksite in September, and I want to use that space once she leaves (mwahahahaha, 1u windows server, a couple 2u Linux servers, a technophile can dream, right?), so rack options are definitely in the consideration. Budget-wise, I'd prefer not to go over a grand for the entire basic network. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Basic router with physical security

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:13 PM PDT

I'm shopping for a new WiFi router. In my other home I was quite happy with an EdgeRouter-X and Ubiquiti AP combo but this is a small apartment and I'm hoping to get away with something cheaper. Can anyone recommend something with all these key features?

    - Some way to prevent roommates and guests from connecting rogue devices for both wireless and ethernet. I find a lot of routers with MAC whitelisting for the wireless, but this feature is harder to find for the LAN ports.

    - A way to fully disable WPS, again to prevent anyone with physical access from connecting a rogue wireless device

    - Port forwarding

    - Guest network

Just looking to boost wifi range a bit

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 06:06 PM PDT

I am looking to get a bit better WiFi coverage in the back yard for phones/Sonos speakers. I have my ISP router in bridge mode to an Archer C9 in my office at the front of the house but we've noticed that sometimes phones will lose connection on the back deck or won't be able to keep the Sonos connected a bit further at the pool.

I don't think there is much potential for a wired solution to an AP but I haven't had much luck with repeaters. I do have a powerline adapter somewhere but I don't think they have any wireless capability.

What are my best, cost effective solutions given that I'm not needing blazing speeds, just connectivity?
