Best Cheap/Free IT Certifications / Training to add to résumé or skills

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:15 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I recently started the Fortinet and Juniper matierials after hearing about them on "The Art of Network Engineering" podcast and they spoke of how the materials and exams are all free or cheap and of a good quality. I immediatly jumped on these as it seems like a no brainer that I should get these if they are making them easily accessible. My question is does anyone know of any other cheap/free certifications or training that anyone in the IT industry should be getting?

Free Training on Microsoft Azure Fundamentals - Will Cover the Full Course

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:54 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently delivering free training on Microsoft's AZ-900 (Microsoft Azure Fundamentals) course. I'm also going to be doing training on most of their other courses for those that's interested. The training should be enough to be able to write the exam associated with each course plus it will greatly benefit you in the workplace.

I truly hope this helps someone out there that needs the help. I remember what it feels like wanting to learn something like these courses and needing to write the exams but not being able to find any resources, at least not any free ones that is.

I intend on doing this completely for free to help those that's sitting in the same boat I used to be in.

    Free Microsoft Azure AZ-900 Training!

IT / ego / talking more in meetings without listening

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:11 AM PDT

We have two ears and one mouth and should listen more than we talk. But why is it that there are some people who just can't shut the hell up in meetings, make things far too overly complex than it needs to be just for the sake of it and shoot all other opinions down. It kills me.

Feeling stuck. I have the certs but not the experience. Any ideas?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:57 AM PDT

Hey all. I've been working in IT for the past three years, have my CISSP, passed CISM, working on my Master's in IT, and have a security clearance. I'm currently working a job that pays well but it's a dead end. I can expect no further professional growth by staying here. The problem I find myself coming across is that I can't find another job because I don't have enough experience. I'm miserable where I am but don't want to take a big pay cut if I were to accept another position. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Edit: I'm currently in San Antonio, TX.

How to list similar positions on resume without repeating yourself?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:27 AM PDT

I need to update my resume with my current position - which is pretty much exactly like my old position, just at a different company.

Any tips for listing (Help Desk) duties in a new and interesting way?

Got a job offer but have been called to an interview at another job, what should I do?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 04:59 PM PDT

I got hired at a company but got an email for an interview at another company. That job pays more. The interview time is unknown at the moment.

What should I do? I don't have a lot of experience, but don't want to look bad especially at the job where I got hired.

How can I get into penetration testing? Any certificates or courses that can help?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:25 AM PDT

I have a Masters degree in information technology and I have been working as an user acceptance tester for about 2 years now. To get into pen testing, what certifications do I need? And will my experience as an user acceptance tester be of any use or weightage? Can anyone please help me out?

    Many thanks!

Is it normal to have to sign a non-compete when accepting a job offer for help desk, sys admin, etc?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 08:06 PM PDT

I received an offer letter and as I was signing all the paperwork I noticed there's a non-compete contract in there. For 12 months after leaving the company I'm not allowed to work for any other IT company/competitor in that city or in any of the surrounding cities.

Is that normal? Seems weird. How seriously do they take that? What if things don't work out in 6 months? It sounds like I basically won't be allowed to have a job anywhere in my state if that happens.

Tech related part times for someone without experience?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:07 PM PDT

I'm set to start online school for cybersecurity in September, and I'm just wondering what would be some jobs related to the industry that are part time and could be obtained by someone without any experience. Does one need to get certs or anything extra on top of this? I'm currently working in a kitchen and would to move on from it once school starts so it would be nice to get a job that would get me more hands on training and experience within the profession. Not looking for anyone to go job hunting for me, but just a few pointers and a direction is all!

Taking less pay for closer to home? Or stay at job where I feel under value?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:05 PM PDT

So been with my current company for about 2 years. Was able to pass my certifications exam before anyone else on the helpdesk. Yet I was told I would receive a pay increase upon passing. .. however it took a few months after I passed, and also wasn't the amount I was looking for. Even my supervisors boss said I was hired Low, and the figure he give me for a pay increase was lower than what I received. Since starting I moved to the other side of town adding more time to my drive...and the company is moving locations also to add even more time. This wouldn't be an issue but they're telling us they want us back in office. Mean while another company that I turned down, in favor of my current job, is now hiring. Only downside is its 2nd shift and every other weekend.
However its only 9 miles from I currently live. Also I've been told by my current job that I will not receive any pay increase for 13 months. Not sure what my next step should be.

Is there any ITIL class that you can recommend? It can be in english or german.

Do you need any prior I.T. experience before attempting a networking career and getting your CCNA?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 09:51 PM PDT

So, basically I reecently left a customer support job, involving a ticketing system, that I worked for over 2 years, and have decided to focus on studying networking and getting my CCNA.

Might be a stupid question but, I read on CBT Nuggets (trying it out with the 7-days free trial) that there's a 1-year recommended experience in some I.T. role prior to attempting the CCNA. Is that really necessary or could I just get my CCNA right now and start some entry-level networking job with it (rather than say help-desk level 1 support that you can get without any certification)?

Solutions Architect interview. What do you expect to cover?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:47 AM PDT

Would a product analyst a good career move? Thoughts requested.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:38 AM PDT

I've accepted a new position as a product analyst. It's better pay send work from home as well as providing a decent amount of tuition reimbursement. But one thing that I'm slightly worried about is that I won't be gaining any transferrable skills in the position as it'll be support for a very niche application. Anytime have any experience with this, do hiring managers consider this time well spent or will I be stuck going back to help desk if I can't find internal positions to jump to?

Add a second disk, but SATA instead of IDE. How did you do it

Create a new optical drive in the IDE controller as a secondary master. Then, download Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 and use the ISO image file for the optical drive. Describe the whole process.

Install Ubuntu in the new SATA disk, leaving all options to default. It is not necessary to install updates for the purpose of this lab, but it is highly recommended in real cases. Describe the general steps.

Boot the machine paying attention to the boot menu. Describe the options you have and how to chose between Windows and Ubuntu.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:48 AM PDT

I'm about to finish my engineering degree in telecoms of 5 years, we study :

-Physical layer :extensive theory about almost everything from em waves to fiber optics

    -TCP/IP, STP, OSPF/BGP, MPLS

    -C, Java, OOP

    -HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript, PHP, mysql

    -Linux, Cisco

    -SDH,PDH

    -GSM, LTE, NGN/IMS

On the side i did some complementary stuff regarding python and automation, and i just finished my remote internship at an ISP and it was IP oriented,

the question i have is , now what ? i keep sending CVs but nothing and the ISP i worked at said they can't afford one more member nor do they have the workload

I'm doing nothing with my days and it feels wasteful, any advice is most welcome

Note : i live in algeria and the job market is very very poor, the whole country has about 20 open IT positions and all of them ask for senior dudes

IT and Computer Science Courses especially in Math

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:44 AM PDT

What are the recommended courses to take in pursuing IT or Computer Science careers - especially in math and reasonings ? Please put basic courses as simply as possible - if I wasn't strong in a particular area, how to get learning assistance or suggestions on how to practice? Thank you in advance.

What is a reasonable price for basic tech support on the side?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 10:33 PM PDT

Ill post a more detailed explanation in the comments, but basically im doing some very basic support and instruction for a family whose tech literacy is very low. I want to charge a price that is far for both parties involved. So my questions are,

(1)what do you guys think is a fair hourly price for virtual facetime/google meet support/guidance of basic issues and "how to" help

(2)what is a fair hourly price for in person work and teaching (40 min drive each way)

    Thank you!

Transitioning between IT and SWE? Is it possible? Looking for advice

    Posted: 02 Jul 2021 02:41 PM PDT

    Hey all,

So, i'll just go right into it. I'm a 30 year old looking for a change of career. I previously have a bachlor in psychology, but i've worked in healthcare for over 3 years now, and i'm kinda over it. I started doing the CS50 course from Harvard and i fell in love with programming.

My goal was to get a CS degree at the Uni this fall, however i did not get the Math grades i needed to get into the course. I did however get an offer for a Bachlors in IT. Even though it was not my original goal, i am now strongly considering it. The bachlor has a few modules in programming, in addition to other IT courses.

My question is, could i still get a career in SWE if i do the IT degree? Say if i take the right courses/get some certificates? I have a friend working as a sysadmin, and he says i should just go for the IT degree. Get my feet wet, see what i like and don't like. What do you guys recommend? IT seems fun, but i have feelings of FOMO. On the other hand, im really, really done with working in healthcare, and i just wanna go back to Uni, start learning again.
