Hello! I'm starting college in the fall and I didn't want to have to buy both an iPad AND a laptop, so I really wanted to get a 2-in-1 laptop to take notes and fulfill both those needs at once. I'm pretty new to looking at laptops, so I'm really lost as to what my best options are. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Asus flow x13 or MacBook Air M1

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:14 AM PDT

So I'm at crossroads here. I need a powerful laptop that can handle ML and occational Big Data programing on a virtual machine.

    Asus flow x13- 16gb RAM, 1tb SSD, Ryzen 9 5900hs, 1650

    MacBook Air M1 - 16gb unified, 512 SSD, 8core - 8 core

Both are at the same price, and I am willing to switch to MacOS if the change is not too difficult and worthy enough.

I'm not a gamer, but with flow could try my hands on them.

I occationally try my hands at video editing and make/edit videos once a month atleast.

I look into Zephyrus G14, but I didn't like the build and read about the thermal issues it comes with.

If you think these are overkill, and a less powerful laptop would suffice my req, then please suggest other laptop too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Light weight. 1.5- 1.6 KG max.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Laptop/PC combo for photo editing and university

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:22 AM PDT

Classic story - im starting uni in September blablabla need a new laptop to take notes. At the same time i also would need a pc or just a potent computer for photo editing (i do graphic and photography as a hobby).

For now i have an ipad (with a very poor battery life tho) that i use for small notes. Should i invest in a pc AND a laptop? Or just see how it goes with an ipad and a pc for the first few months?

Also what would u recommend for a pc and a laptop? Any models affine with my needs?

(Preffered: small laptop 13", under 2k)

    Ryzen G15 - good buy?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:33 AM PDT

I've been wanting to replace my computer with a laptop, but still want to game and video edit. Is this a good deal? G15 Ryzen™ Edition It's on sale for nearly $400 off and I can't seem to find any competing laptops with similar specs for the price. I'm also not very tech savvy. Ends up being shy of 1500 after 4 year protection plan and accidental damage plan.

I don't think I'll be getting much use out of it until next year when I go back to Grad School, because I currently have a tower that runs everything I need just fine. Will this be obsolete by then? Should I wait and find a better deal?

    Thanks

Good gaming laptop that fits my budget and description?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:37 PM PDT

I'm trying to purchase my first laptop but I need help trying to find one that fits my description. I'm mostly going to use the laptop for editing but I would like to have gaming qualites to it as well.

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $830 USD budget. Cheaper is preferred but not required.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No, I prefer new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and build quality. Battery doesn't matter that much since I would mostly have it plugged anyway.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-17".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to use Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to run games like Minecraft, GTA V, TF2, Sonic Adventure 2 and Generations at Medium/High settings if possible. Games I'm planning to play and hoping to run are Alien Isolation, Halo: Master Chief Collection and Persona 4 Golden.

I'm not looking for to run on Ultra High settings or anything like that. I'm fine with medium or high settings as mentioned before.

I also want to run emulators such as PCSX2, Dolphin, RPCS3 on usually medium/high as well. Example of games I want to play are Persona 3 FES, DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Smash Bros. Melee and Persona 5

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A backlight on the keyboard with brightness settings. (RGB is preferred but not necessary).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I prefer if it's Windows OS, since I'm used to it. A large SD Card slot is not required but preferred. 2 or more USB slots would be preferred. A Webcam is not required but preferred. An HDMI port to put on the TV.

    Lightweight Microsoft Remote Desktop Client

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:14 PM PDT

I am looking for a light weight laptop to remote into a Windows 10 Pro machine. Local applications would be limited to web calls (i.e. Zoom).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
350 USD (some flexibility here if it gets me to a second external monitor or longer device lifespan)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Sufficient battery life for 3-4 hours per day
      No touch screen needed
Laptop style (display + keyboard/trackpad) is needed
Desired lifespan 3-ish years, but would appreciate more
      Don't care about style/looks
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I can tolerate something up to ~5 lbs
3 lbs or under, small power adapter, is better (easier to travel/commute with)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Approximately 14 inches (smaller is OK)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No -- limited to:
      - Microsoft Remote Desktop client
      - External monitor (1 external + built in display is sufficient, 2 external with build in display closed is even better)
      - Zoom/Teams
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      (edit) Windows OS
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
It would be used both standalone (built in display, built in keyboard), and hooked up to at least one external monitor and a keyboard/mouse
I've been considering an ASUS L410. It fits the price point and seems sufficient to run as a Remote Desktop client, but I'm wondering if I can get something that would support a second external monitor and/or have a longer expected lifespan without spending too much more.

I'm a digital compositor looking to purchase a mobile workstation for After Effects and Nuke.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:40 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Turkey, 25.000 TRY.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance matters the most for me and I'd like at least 6 hours or more of battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight matters somewhat as I'll be carrying it around with me. It's not crucial but a laptop weighing ~2kgs would be a plus.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm a digital compositor, I do most of my work on Foundry Nuke and Adobe After Effects. So running those smoothly is what matters to me most.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

32 or 64 GBs of RAM is a must for me. I'd also appreciate a good display, a SD card reader and a Thunderbolt port.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd like the laptop to have a more classy and subdued design as I might sometimes use it in office environments as well. Thanks for your help.

Looking for a new laptop for home use, messing around with VMware and learning to program

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:41 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Roughly 900 euro's max, the Netherlands

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
I prefer not, unless the price/value is great.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? battery life should definitely be a few hours and I'd like to get some good performance. I'd rather not get a 17" laptop, so I'd be looking at a 15".

How important is weight and thinness to you? It's quite important, it'll be used on a daily basis whenever I'm home.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. As mentioned before, I'd like to go for something like a 15" screen.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Well, I'd likely to start messing around a bit with VMWare, and I want try to learn a programming language.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The device won't be used for gaming. If it has a dedicated GPU, it's nice but definitely not a priority.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I spent the last few days looking around and the Vivobooks caught my attention. I basically found the following two:

    Vivobook S14 M433 Ryzen 5 5500u / 16gb RAM / 1TB SSD / Radeon RX Vega 7 / 14" screen - 729 euros Vivobook 15 Intel i7-1165G7 / 16GB RAM / 1TB SSD / Intel Iris Xe graphics / 15" screen - 899 euros

Having read some of the posts on here regarding Asus products, I'm not to sure if these are worth the purchase though. Having said that, knowing that I can get these specs I'd preferably like to find something similar.

    Laptop for Chemical Engineering Degree

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 11:04 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1200 max, somewhat flexible

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but I wouldn't choose them if I didnt have to

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Biggest concerns are performance (needs to be able to run engineering school programs) and have a battery to get me through a school day. Thinness is also nice since it needs to fit in a backpack.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Fairly important, I will be carrying it around in a backpack all day

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

No, it just has to not be so big that it fits in a backpack

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Will be using C++ and Matlab at the very least, possibly various types of CAD and various other common engineering programs as well

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not applicable

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen would be nice but isn't required, a form of biometric ID would be appreciated. Required tech specs from my school are 1080p resolution, i5/i7 or Ryzen 5/7 as CPU, A dedicated graphics card, 8 GB RAM minimum/16 GB recommended, 256 GB SSD minimum/512 GB recommended, Wi-Fi 6, and a 720p/30 fps webcam.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm considering the following ASUS ZenBook: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Ultra-Slim-i7-1165G7-Thunderbolt-UX435EG-XH74/dp/B08KH3Z5WW/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=asus+zenbook+mx450&qid=1625315500&sprefix=asus+zenbook+mx450&sr=8-3

MBP died, should I switch to a PC?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 10:23 AM PDT

Hi everyone, the other day my 2010 MacBook Pro failed beyond repair. I bought it new in 2010 and honestly I've been able to use it for almost everything I needed up until it died, especially after installing an SSD a couple years ago. I dropped it multiple times, cracked the screen, and it's been in harsh temperatures. I'm so impressed with how long it lasted, I'm considering buying an M1 MacBook Air. However, they are pricey and I don't necessarily need the MacOS. I've seen good reviews for the Asus Aspire 5 and it's almost half the price. Is that a good purchase? I'm open to other recommendations. I would like whatever laptop I buy to last as long as possible. Thank you!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $500-900. I'm on a tighter budget now but would be willing to invest in the better product.

Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, am considering a refurb MacBook Air

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality and performance

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14 inches. Would like screen to be high quality.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some photo editing, music editing, office programs, but nothing too intense.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I might game, but I will most likely just game on my ps4

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and good touchpad. I love the way my Mac's touchpad felt. Not sure if this is unique to Macs though.

I'm a paramedic and work full time on the ambulance in a rural area. Things fall often and sometimes get blood on them. I've been looking at things like a tough book and getac but they don't seem to have the requirements to run AAA games. I wouldn't mind upgrading an old tough book but I'm not sure if I could fit a graphics card and take at least an I7 and more ram. The software we use for reports is online so that's not an issue but I have a vacation upcoming and would like to have something to do during travel time and at night. Something that could be upgraded later on would be amazing.

Help finding laptop with a gpu for not very demanding games.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:35 AM PDT

Hello, I am looking to do a minor upgrade from my 3ish year old laptop with one that has a discrete gpu. The games I'm interested in are

    1. WoW TBC classic (which is a old game and not very intensive)
    2. League Of Legends (also not very intensive)
    3. Minecraft ( can be intensive but dont need to play it at max!)

Beause these game are not super crazy demanding games, i was wondering if i could get away with a older / cheaper laptop instead of a new model.

This is my Current laptop, with just intergraded graphics to maintain 60 fps i have to turn the settings to lowest possible.. But they stll play so i imagine and GPU would be enough.

    Current Laptop: Acer swift3 : SF314-52 : https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/7226?b=1&pn=NX.GQGAA.002&sn=74800519272

    CPU

    Intel® Core™ i5 8th Gen i5-8250U Quad-core (4 Core™) Processor Speed 1.60 GHz Maximum Turbo Speed 3.40 GHz

    GPU (INTERGRATED)

     UHD Graphics 620 : DDR4 SDRAM

    RAM

    8 GB DDR4 SDRAM

TLDR: Are there any older/che aaper Laptops with a gpu that can play some low demanding games at decent settings? If so, are there any with higher refresh rates aswell? =P

    Video Editing and Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:59 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      IDR 18-19 mil, Indonesia

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Probably not

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'd say thin and light gaming laptops

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      I travel quite a lot, I prefer something that's 2kg or less

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly Premiere and open world games (like RDR2, HZD) or racing (FH), sometimes Photoshop & Illustrator

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

At least it can run SOTR with 60 fps on high settings, 1080p

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Something that doesn't scream "gaming" — i like stealthy look

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Omen 15 2020 with 4800h RTX 2060 seems to be the best one i can found for the budget, but it's around 2,3-2,4 kg — Is it too heavy? I can only get G14 with 4800h GTX 1650 for the same money. Legion 5's weight is also pretty much the same with Omen.

Is this budget laptop worth it? if not, any better alternatives?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:04 AM PDT

Helping my friend choose a laptop, will only really be used for browsing and office suite and some other light programs.

We stumbled upon this one which seems to deliver the required specs but I cannot find any online reviews for it in English. Could anyone take a look and give me their verdict?

    Thanks a lot.
