Samsung One UI 4.0 (Android 12) news next week - Ice Universe on Weibo

Source (mobile link since desktop link seems to require signing in)

Yes, it's a rumour of an announcement of an announcement. You can tell it's a slow news day...

If this is true, it seems the OS updates are getting faster and faster every year for Samsung

Anyhow, it's a good thread to discuss Android 12 and One UI 4.0 in general

I hope Samsung doesn't end up adopting the new quick tiles. IMO, they're a huge waste of space, and I hate how they got rid of the expanded WiFi/Bluetooth menu (and messed up the long press functionality)

Funny sidenote, according to Google Translate, One UI 4.0 is going to explode next week

A root cause of Android phone battery drain and overheating ?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:15 AM PDT

I just want to share my experience on this subject, as I found this problem to be extremely annoying and it seemed to be shared by a lot a users without real solution or root cause identified.

The problem : Specifically on Android 11 versions, many phones started overheating throughout the day (and night) which caused a massive battery drain. Going as far as loosing 30%+ of battery over the night (so no touching and airplane mode in my case), and having to recharge thrice per day to not run out of juice.

    The investigation :

    1. I am using a Oneplus 7T, and the problem appeared with the update to OxygenOS 11. Oneplus software management has been degrading since the last few years and I saw many reports of this same problem on the Oneplus forum so I first assumed that Oneplus rolled out a buggy version of OxygenOS.
    2. Next updates of OxygenOS did not solve the problem and, among the community, a lot of users still reported this problem (and still are) but some stated their device was fine and never encoutered such issues
    3. I decided to switch to a custom ROM to tests the buggy ROM theory, which did not help as the same behaviour was occuring. In the same time I saw that this problem were not limited to Oneplus phones and seemed to affect some other brands as well, so I began to think about a bug in Android 11 altogether (which would only affect some phones?)
    4. Going through some reddit post on the subject, I installed GSam battery monitor to have more details since the default Android battery monitor only showed "Android System". It showed that 40%+ of the battery used were used by the "NFC service" task ! (with high numbers of wake locks and background CPU usage)
    5. Although I have tried to deactivate it before, I killed the NFC task a few times and it seemed before it seemed to "unblock" itself from whatever it was doing in the background. Now my phone battery life is restored, I have no more overheating issues, and I barely loose 1% of battery overnight ! (still in airplane mode)

Conclusion : In my case it seems the problem root cause was the NFC service somehow "blocked" in a waking state

I detailed the steps of what I did to share it with other users that might have this problem, in retrospective I think switching to a custom ROM didn't help. The biggest breakthrough came from the details provided by the battery monitor, hence I don't advise to flash a custom ROM if you do not intend to in the first place.

If some users have insight about this problem, I am curious about their experiences and if the NFC service is a fault for everyone or not.

    Cheers !

Is Google beating Apple at their own game?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:26 AM PDT

For context a a year and a half ago I switched to iOS because everything looked so well integrated and smooth and working together. Eventually I ended up entangling myself in the ecosystem with a MacBook and an Apple Watch.

And now with iOS 15 and Android 12 around the corner, the tables seem to have turned:

    • Google's apps always sync immediately through the cloud, iCloud files and Reminders are more automatic, yes, but they sync with a delay and often if you turn off a device soon enough after working on a file it won't sync at all.
    • Android 12 now has 'Material you' that makes all stock apps have a neat, synchronised yet customisable user interface. On the other hand, iOS apps are moving away from their core design: Safari's url bar is now located in the middle pf nowhere, Apple maps has lost it's stylish "Apple" look and has had it replaced with this weird new combination of gray, green and white.
    • You can add planned trips from Google maps into Google calendar as events with 2 clicks (PC only), on Apple maps you can plan trips but you can't add them anywhere and the manual process in doing it from the calendar app, while possible, takes more time.

I feel like Apple is just losing the huge lead that they had in this department.
