Transferring files between Android phone and Linux mint 20

    Posted: 02 May 2021 11:13 AM PDT

My phone has the the USB type C port damaged and I can transfer files with it to the PC.

    I can barely charge it.

I was trying to transfer pics using Bluetooth but Linux mint asks permission for each and every single picture. I can't wait for it to ask me permission for all of them individually.

Is there any way I can give permission to all file transfers from this device?

Or maybe there's a better way to transfer files?

    Thanks!

Killed root, broke SSH, looking for some confirmation on some assumptions

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:58 AM PDT

Recently I noticed one of our (fortunately not mission critical) off-site servers had the root account left logged in locally by one of our engineers, tisk tisk..

Being the security conscious smart individual I am, I googled "how to log out another user" and came across SKILL. While SSH'd as root to the server (don't judge me) I ran 'skill -KILL -u root' figuring that it'd just log both the locally logged in account and my ssh session out.

Well something broke. I now can no longer SSH with any account, and just get a "connection refused" message.

Is this because the SSHD service is owned by root?

Also, I'm NOW aware SKILL is deprecated. For my future use, is there a better way to handle killing a local session without me asking our engineer to go back onsite to fix my fuck up (and probably leave his local root session logged in again)?

To note, this is an Oracle 6 server, though I don't think OS has anything to do with this issue, short of maybe what commands are supported as an alternative to my dumb-assery.

Dual Monitor Setup: Unable to Play Sounds Simultaneously Through Different Audio Outputs (Linux Mint 20.1)

    Posted: 02 May 2021 09:17 AM PDT

I just did a fresh install of Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon. I'm going to try to outline my problem the best I can with as much information as possible.

    Setup

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600x

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 (using driver NVIDIA 460.73.01 installed from Driver Manager)

    Monitors:

    LG TV

    • Audio Output: HDMI/DisplayPort HDA NVidia

    • active port: <hdmi-output-0>

    • Notes: Connected to GPU via HDMI cable; speakers are built-in

    Lenovo Y27-q 20

    • Audio Output: HDMI/DisplayPort 2 HDA NVidia

    • active port: <hdmi-output-1>

    • Notes: Connected to GPU via DisplayPort cable; monitor does not have built-in speakers so it's using a Vizio soundbar (surround sound system with subwoofer) which is connected to the monitor's headphone jack via aux cable

    Additional Audio Notes:

An additional output device listed under Sound Settings as "Digital Output (S/-PDIF) Starship/Matisse HD Audio Controller", with device.profile.name = "iec958-stereo", device.profile.description - "Digital Stereo (IEC958)", device.description = "Starship/Matisse HD Audio Controller Digital Stereo (IEC958)", using active port: <iec958-stereo-output>, does not produce any sound whatsoever.

    The Problem

I have a dual monitor setup with separate audio outputs as outlined under the "Setup" section above. I want to be able to play sounds through separate audio outputs simultaneously. (Example: I want to play a game on the Lenovo monitor with the game's sounds playing through the soundbar while playing a movie on the LG TV with the movie's sounds playing through the built-in LG TV speakers at the same time). I'm migrating from Windows 10 which has the ability to route audio through different output devices on an app by app basis within W10's default Sound Settings (meaning I can configure certain apps like VLC and all browser audio to only play through LG TV's speakers and another browser's audio and game audio to only play through the Lenovo's soundbar speakers at the same time).

The problem is that audio will only play from one output at a time. Under Sound Settings, the following are listed:

HDMI/DisplayPort 2 HDA NVidia (plays audio through soundbar connected to Lenovo headphone jack via aux cable; monitor is connected to GPU via DisplayPort cable)

HDMI/DisplayPort HDA NVidia (plays audio through LG TV built-in speakers; TV is connected to GPU via HDMI cable)

Digital Output (S/-PDIF) Starship/Matisse HD Audio Controller (no audio plays at all) Simultanous output to HDA NVidiaDigital Stereo (HDMI), Starship/Matisse HD Audio Controller Digital Stereo (IEC958) (after I installed paprefs and ticked on "Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards" under Simultaneous Output tab)

Simultaneous Output does not work and trying to set the audio outputs under PulseAudio Volume Control (after installing pavucontrol) doesn't give me an option to route or enable both HDMI/DisplayPort outputs at the same time. Audio will only play through one of the HDMI/DisplayPort outputs at a time and not simultaneously. Going into individual app settings like in VLC Player will only list the active audio outputs (whichever currently active HDMI/DisplayPort output, the non-working Starship/Matisse output, and Simultaneous Output) so that method doesn't work.

I've never had issues with multiple simultaneous audio outputs with Windows with varying monitors, TVs, and speakers throughout the years, but I haven't been able to figure out how to make this work on a fresh installation of Linux Mint.

    Configurations and Attempted Solutions

Nvidia driver is the current official version installed through Driver Manager

System is updated via sudo apt update and upgrade

paprefs installed via sudo apt install paprefs

Entered paprefs command, pulled up PulseAudio Preferences, and ticked on "Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards" under Simultaneous Output tab

    Installed pavucontrol

Installed pipewire (though I'm not sure where to find it or how to turn it on anywhere)

If more information is needed, I can try to provide it the best I can.

Trying to set up dual boot w/ Windows 10 & Ubuntu, feels like I'm getting stuck somewhere. Can someone take a look?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 10:10 AM PDT

Prior to installation, I set aside storage on an extra hard drive I had. This is my disk management screen. I want to keep C drive and D drive untouched, & have Ubuntu installed on Disk 1 w/ the 150GB partition.

I was following this guide throughout for installation, & there were two things I had issues on.

First thing I get stuck on is here. When I select Install alongside Windows Boot Manager, it doesn't let me select the other disk to install Ubuntu onto. I don't want to install it on the same disk as Windows, I'm worried that if I hit to install, it would cause a problem w/ my current C drive or wipe something out.

So instead I went into advanced partition. I followed the above guide & went to create root, swap, and home partitions. When I went to create a home partition it says the space is unusable. So I'm not sure how to proceed.

Am I making this too hard for myself, or is there something I'm missing? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Case swap

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:53 AM PDT

I want to change the case i currently using on my linux server, for something with better air flow and hopefully reduce noice. When I start taking things apart will I run into any issues when booting back up, if the harddrives and so on aren't in the same plugs?

One more question, any suggestions on what case to get with alot of space for harddrives and good airflow?

Raspberry Pi - USB SSD keeps disconnecting at random?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:10 PM PDT

Hi, I recently bought a Raspberry Pi 4 to use as a bitcoin node. I have the boot partition on a microSD and the some data on an external SSD connected via USB 3.0. The USB connects just fine and mounts automatically, but then it'll randomly disconnect, I run fdisk -l and the device doesn't exist anymore and I have to reboot.

Here's what I see in the messages log (the SSD is sda):

I saw a post somewhere that mentioned that the power supply might not be giving enough power to run the Pi and the drive, so maybe that's it? I'm using the 5.1V 3.0A supply that came with the Pi.

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to Linux so if anyone can give me some ideas or things to check I'd appreciate it. I thought I included all the relevant logs, but let me know if you want me to include any more.

Edit: Also found the following in daemon.log:

Tips and basic commands for running a website on a Linux VPS server?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:54 AM PDT

I'm planning to host my wordpress site on Linode VPS, I have no idea about the Linux commands to run an unmanaged VPS. I just switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint couple months ago, where I can learn these basic Linux commands especially for managing a VPS? I'd also appreciate any tips for a newbie like me.

Linode VPS offers many Distros to choose from, the default is Debian, since I use Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu - should I choose Ubuntu as the OS?

    Wifi not working on archlinux

    Posted: 02 May 2021 06:36 AM PDT

    Hello,

I recently installed Archlinux on my laptop. I installed KDE plasma on it. now i have issues when trying to connect to Wifi. When i stop NetworkManager and try to connect with wifi-menu it works. when i enable NetworkManager and try to connect to the same wifi network via the KDE GUI it stops on "configuring network" and never connect. i can see the network on de GUI but can't connect to it.

What are the necessary utilities/services that are needed by Arch to connect to WIFI ?

I installed wpa-supplicant networkmanager dhcpcd net-tools iw netctl, can two or more of these utilities be in conflict?

what should i do to solve the problem?

    Thanks for trying to help

I'm trying to install FerenOS again. I had to format my drive because windows died and the installation made booting into Feren impossible. I downloaded a fresh .iso, made a USB with Rufus 3.14, on boot got a bunch of errors, booted into live and install throws up this. WDID?

Fedora and Win10 Automatic Partition Option

    Posted: 02 May 2021 11:40 AM PDT

When installing Fedora there is an "automatic partitioning" option, and I'm wondering if it will detect Win10 and not delete it.

EDIT: I was on a tight schedule so I risked it (I already made a backup of course) and it does in fact detect Win10. So I now have a working dual boot with using the automatic partitioning feature.

These are the steps I follow on ubuntu, manjaro and Fedora:

1.) Open the file /etc/default/grub for editing, for example by running

    sudoedit /etc/default/grub

2.) Add to the line beginning GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT: "i8042.nopnp=1 pci=nocrs" so that it reads:

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.nopnp=1 pci=nocrs"

** If other parameters are there between the double quotes, it may be OK to leave them.

3.) Save the file and exit

4.) Run this command to update the GRUB configuration:

    sudo update-grub

    5.) Reboot

But I can't do it with Pop OS

WiFi Faster on Phone than on Linux Desktop! Why?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 08:30 PM PDT

It takes an annoying amount of time for website such as reddit, google doc, trello, etc. to be loaded on my linux desktop in comparison to my phone and macbook. Can the adapter have something to do with this? I'm using TP-Link USB WiFi Adapter (TL-WN725N) over Ubuntu

Doubt regarding ownership of directory. Not able to access the directory even after being part of the group owner with execute permission enabled.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 05:24 AM PDT

right now the setup is as follows

user sathya is part of the group finance

/home/finance/ directory has the group owner finance and user owner root with permissions as drwxr-x---.

now as far as i know the user sathya should be able to cd into finance directory since the group permission has execute bit in it and sathya belongs to the group finance but it shows permission denied when i try to cd in to /home/finance

    what am i doing wrong?

Do programs with dependencies ( ex: XAMPP) always install their own software (eg: apache) or use OS's existing software?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 01:50 AM PDT

I am asking because my XAMPP apache server won't start. I tried changing the ports (including the SSL ports) and apace STILL tries to start at port 80. This makes me suspect I have two apache's installed on my system, but I don't know how to check. And also the title - do programs check if you have software before installing their dependencies, or do they always install their dependencies?

A problem of not using apt-get command because of lockdown features.

    Posted: 02 May 2021 05:36 AM PDT

When I type 'who' command I see two users, same names, one has a tty1 tag & other one doesn't. This causes a problem of not using apt-get command because of lockdown feature. According to process of two root sessions are using apt-get at same time and so I want to stop one of the users.

Before this the username in termal was 'narayan-To-be-filled-by-oem'. I wanted to change it so I got into host file & hostname file in etc folder & changed it to 'narayan'.

When I write 'who' in terminal & print Enter this is what I got:

    narayan. 2021-05-02. 16:35 narayan. tty1 2021-05-02. 16:35
