Vlan Segmentation Design (Windows domain network)

    Posted: 02 May 2021 02:45 AM PDT

Hi to all, i need some tip/advice in designing a small business lan with 3/4 vlans

vlan10: management (accessible only via a jump box with 2 nic)

vlan20: guests (access only to internet, no private lans)

vlan30: servers (access to internet + clients vlan)

vlan40: clients (access to internet + servers vlan)

less than 20 clients (win10pro domain joined)

less than 5 servers win2019std (domain controller, erp/crm, file server, backups/service machine)

    Premises:

    - i don't want to use Cisco and Ubiquity hardware (preferred HPE-Aruba and Zyxel)

    - the management + guest part is clear, but i accept advices...

    Here are my questions:

What i can use for routing between clients an servers vlans? an hardware firewall? a layer 3 switch? other?

I want to create firewall rules (and maybe acl) from clients to servers allowing only the bare minimun traffic: dns udp/53 + smb tcp/445 + sql 1433/tcp + what is needed for client servers handshake/comunication.

I want to have no bandwith bottlenecks between clients and servers (3/4 ports lacp trunks? 10gbe ports? what else?)

Clients dhcp server: what is the best between these options?

    a) a standalone DHCP server (firewall? server? ) on the client vlan (only the dns will be on the server vlan, or i need also a dns relay agent to the domain controller?)

    b) a dchp relay agent on the server vlan, and use a windows domain server as dhcp server?

    c) other ?

    thank you

    [QUESTION] wifi 802.11 header structure

    Posted: 02 May 2021 09:57 AM PDT

I am not sure if I am in the right sub or not but I hope someone here can help me.

I am trying to send selfmade ethernet packets over raw sockets in C (Beacon frames for now). I found various 802.11 mac-header structures online but they were all different and I dont know which one will work or not. I could try every one of them but when working with raw sockets in C, weird things happen and I cant be sure wether my mac-header is wrong or some other things are going wrong. if someone could send me a link to a diagram for a 802.11 mac-header that he knows to be the right one would be great and could save me weeks of debugging.

    Best Cross Platform Terminal Client

    Posted: 02 May 2021 03:08 PM PDT

What do you prefer for cross platform terminal access? I use Windows/macOS/iOS and would like to sync host information. Ideally would not be over a cloud but direct between clients or over my own server. Termius is the closest I have seen, but is expensive for the sync version and AFAIK syncs through their cloud. Thoughts?

Using/Installing NETCONF on Linux for Network Automation?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 04:07 PM PDT

Hey all. I'm trying to build a lab to start testing out network automation using the Cisco CSR1000vs and i'm using EVE-NG to do so. Unfortunately, I have to build everything within the lab so I can't use my PC and run NETCONF commands agains the router. I have a Linux box (Centos8) installed and my knowledge with Linux is very limited.

I am trying to figure out how to use NETCONF within this Linux box and I am coming up blank in my google searches. Anyone have any ideas how I could enable/use NETCONF on Centos8? Thanks.

1GB Ethernet options over OSP copper

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:55 PM PDT

Need to extend an Ethernet connection to another building via an existing underground PE-89 flooded telephone cable. Cable has the correct primary and secondary protectors.

Fiber is not an option due to construction costs, RF or FSO is also not an option (no line of sight)

Looking at the Transition Networks Ethernet Over 2-Wire Extender, SKU EO2PD4052. Any other options ?

What switches to use with VM hosts other than Dell?

    Posted: 02 May 2021 07:40 AM PDT

We are replacing our rack of VM hosts with another from Dell. Even though we are mostly an HPE/Aruba shop, we use Dell switches on that rack because it is recommended by Dell. They haven't been as stable as HP or Cisco switches that we use. I am thinking of using Aruba CX 83xx or Cisco Nexus this time around. I would prefer the Aruba though because that is what most of the network is.

Is anyone using Aruba CX with VM hosts? How has support from Dell or VMWare been?

    Networking - Future Prospects

    Posted: 01 May 2021 08:55 PM PDT

Hi Folks, What's the best way for Network analysts/engineers/architects to stay relevant for the next decade in the age of AI,ML and Cloud technologies? Could include security administrators as well here. Automation and orchestration and the trend towards managed SaaS makes many operations simple. Looking for guidance and some words of wisdom.... Thanks
