How do GNU/Linux users watch videos ? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:58 AM PST Hello , i tried Linux mint 20.1 with ( NIVIDA drivers ) i had some issue but i manged to fix it and i love using linux so far - every thing i wish to be in OS is there , but my main issue is with the browsers in GNU/Linun I'm just wondering how the average and the advanced Linux user watch videos ? look i know this sound's weird - but hear me out i'm new to GNU/Linux and when i watch videos on my Firefox browser The CPU usage spike - and the overall machine slows down - keep in mind it's not even playing 4k video well i did a bit research and i figures out there was something called browser hardware acceleration - i tried to enable it using config in i also tried chromium based browsers - google chrome - brave - ungoogled chromium ( still the same issue drop the overall performance of my system ) and google just don't want to put the work to make that feature available and work correctly on GNU/Linux other solutions :- some people just suggested "just run it with MPV" to be honest not a bad idea but still it gave me a lot of errors and the mpv , vlc still uses a lot of CPU - and i dont want it to rally on the cpu i just want to to use that god damn GPU (: any other ideas ? Linux mint 20.1 Graphics driver : NIVIDA 460 CPU : intel i7 6700 GPU : NIVIDA 950 GPU 2 , intel 520 M Edit : heres the mpv logs

Looking to make the switch from Windows 10 to Linux. A few general questions... Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:53 PM PST I 've recently built a new PC (huge investment) which hasn't been set up yet. I'm thinking of finally making the switch to Linux and have been doing a lot of research. For starters, this is the new build (not sure if it matters, although it ties into a question I have):
I'm ready to ditch Windows and start new - I've been using it since the days of Windows 3.1, it is all I've ever known, and I am fed up with the horrible optimization and background processes, privacy issues and other numerous other issues (I typically re-install Windows every 2-3 years because the registry seems to get clogged with things that have been uninstalled long ago, straggling files left behind in hidden areas, etc.) I'm looking for a Windows alternative that is faster, more optimized, has less background resources - or at least gives you the freedom to kill the ones you don't use and completely uninstall them. I'd really prefer if it had a very close "look and feel" to Windows, though. I'm so hard wired to using a Windows interface and I'd prefer to keep that. Things I use my PC for-
Things I'm concerned about in switching to Linux:
In my research, based on what I'm looking for, it seems like these two might be best for me [this is what I'd really like feedback on]:
Any feedback would be much appreciated - thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
I’ve filled up my 18GB root partition after ~3 months. Is this normal? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:04 PM PST This is my first time using a separate root partition after using Linux for a couple of years, and my first Pop OS installation. I don't think I'm installing an unreasonable amount of things, but I have a couple of suspects:

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:18 PM PST i wanted to give the rxvt terminal a try since the people that use it love it so i downloaded the rxvt-unicode-pixbuf-patched version from AUR, made some changes to .Xresources file and no matter what i do with the fonts and settings, i can never get the glyphs to display any bigger than what is in the photo. i use the 'exa' command for 'ls' and with that, you see a nice display of a folder for directories and different glyphs for different file types. anyway, i was wondering if anyone can get full size glyphs to display using rxvt and what u did to achieve this? the pictures attached are screenshots from my terminal, the one with larger glyphs is using tilix terminal and the one with smaller glyphs is rxvt-unicode here is the font section of my .Xresources

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:12 PM PST I just recently made the switch from W7 to Linux for the first time. Everything has been working out smoothly, with the exception of one thing. I normally use an external CD/DVD drive to rip CDs. After the install I tried a couple of programs from the store, but none of them were able to rip any CD. The ripping process will start, but it will quickly run into some undefined error and stop. I also tried to do it from the Disks program without luck. Any good tips for troubble shooting is appreciated. Edit: I'm on Pop OS [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:33 AM PST I've been thinking of getting into linux and I've heard that having alot of gnome extensions can cause lag or slow down and I was wondering how many extensions you can even have before it starts slowing down. [link] [comments] |
Considering moving from Ubuntu to Mint. (beginner) Main differences ubuntu, mint, (kde neon)? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:19 AM PST Hi I got Ubuntu and it's been ok, I think it looks really nice but for some reason its been pretty buggy on my computer. I am dual booting it with windows and one of the big bugs is that when I connect my headphones, the sound quality is awful. I asked around and apparently thats just a known problem with Ubuntu. I mean it's not that big of a deal but it is one of the main things that is stopping me from using it. I do really want to give linux another try. My main use for linux would be programming, maybe some web development and emails and office work. Also privacy is important for me. And stability is very very important I did some searching online and I found Mint to be recommended by a lot of people. So what do you guys think? Will it be good for my needs and work with my headphones haha? Also I am open to any other suggestions. When I was looking online I also found a lot of people recommending manjaro and kde neon, but these are less stable right? I tried this: https://distrochooser.de/?l=2 and it listed kde neon first, but mint was pretty high up. [link] [comments] |
Cant connect with NetworkManager ethernet/wifi (arch 5.11.1) Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:45 AM PST Preamble: I like linux, have tried a good few distros, used them a lot, but always found it difficult to feel like i was ever getting a good understanding of how it works in a way that'd help with being able to troubleshoot some things and tailor it more, arch linux seemed like a good way to learn to do that, but I've hit a snag i cant work out and the arch linux reddit seemed less noob friendly support wise lol Distro: arch linux 5.11.1 Hardware: thinkpad t420 Theres two issues -
What i tried(a mess sorry, i tried a lot and my adhd makes it hard to remember when and in what order): i switched radio off and on, deleted the connections, reconnected, plugged, unplugged, moved closer to the router, checked the service was running (it was as far as i could tell), tried using the bssid but no luck. So i tried checking the config file which was blank except for two commented lines, one directing me to the manuel and i thought oh, yeah, that's a thing! So ctrl+x out of nano and tried to do that and realised i had not installed the package for the man command lol which lead to problem two..
I was thinking of just reinstalling arch and starting another test run again but if anyone can spot the rookie error i made or ran in to similar issues that'd be helpful, thank you [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:42 AM PST I'm trying to understand what a label is. A colleague of mine wrote in his termina today "parted /dev/mapper/nameofmountpoint mklabel gpt". I've used parted only to partition a disc...until now. I also know that GPT is stands for GUID Partition Table and allows you to have a partition bigger than 2 TB. The part that confused me is the "mklabel". I've Googled what label means in Linux, but I still didn't understand it. For me, "label" in English, means something like a tag or a piece of paper attached to an object. Or something that you can use as an "alias" for something, e.g. you give it a personal label to separate it from other stuff. So when I saw him writing "mklabel gpt", I thought he put a label to that mountpoint to avoid writing its whole name or for some other reason. Can someone explain to me what "label" is, why and how is it used, or point me to a direction to read about it? [link] [comments] |
Remote desktop on Ubuntu 20.04 Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:01 AM PST Hi, I am new to Linux, and i dont know much about how a remote desktop works, and also my English is not great. On my work we have a cloud server, and we use a rdp file to login to the server. It connects with a username and password, and then sends a message to an app on my phone (Duo mobile) and then it connects. On Windows I had a .rdp file with all the right settings, I copied that file to Ubuntu. When I click on it, it opens up a program called Remmina and asks for my credentials. I fill in the username and password, and for the domain (domein) name the server address: (Translation: Gebruikersnaam = username, Wachtwoord = password, Domein = domain, wachtwoord onthouden = save password). But when I click on OK, it does nothing, it tries to connect for 1 second and goes right back to this screen. What am I doing wrong? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:08 AM PST I tried to open the appimages file of the "Session" messenger application but it didn't work, I don't know why it doesn't open. Don't worry, I checked "Allow file execution as a program on permission. How do I fix this problem? [link] [comments] |

I have project and have no idea what to do - someone please help (arecord command) Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:21 AM PST I study economy, but I have this one subject in IT that I need to finish and it is so hard to me cos this is not really my area.... Basically this is what prof told me: ~Make some kind of ftp, sftp, cloud server on one of your devices... (Now he gives me this tablet like linux device that has Rasberry Pi) You need to set up that device to record yourself (he gives me microphone) using arecord command... Using the commands , you need to set up the script that when you record and hit enter, that sound file is visible on my computer (we are totally 2 different cities, so I guess I have to make a script or server that sends a recorded file using arecord command and once I hit enter it sends him directly) ~ I am so desperate and IDK what to do [link] [comments] |
Can't get NanoPi M3 working on my TV Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:46 AM PST Hi guys. I got myself a NanoPi M3 yesterday and wanted to connect it to my TV with HDMI. There is Debian OS on the NanoPi and I got it running and everything, but unfortunately I do not have picture on my TV when connected it with HDMI in order for me to use it as desktop. When I ran the NanoPi, the login loaded with no issues on the TV, but once I entered my password, monitor went crazy... See Picture: https://imgur.com/a/B27Gseg Any ideas what could be the issue? If so, how can I fix it and put it in work? [link] [comments] |
Boot Menu not recognizing flash Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:41 AM PST Hi! Hope you are doing well! I replaced my Windows 10 with Ubuntu a couple of months ago and did it with no issues for just 20 minutes. A friend of mine is with Windows 7 on his laptop and wants to get rid of the Windows and try Kubuntu. I downloaded the ISO file and put it on a flash stick in order to boot it on the machine, but when I press F12 while restarting the laptop, the flash stick is not included in the Boot Menu and I cannot select it in order to boot it.. See Picture: https://imgur.com/a/Sbl8cLE Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! FIGURED OUT!!! ISO FILE WAS NOT BURNT WITH RUFUS [link] [comments] |

Getting started with linux on a hard drive. Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:11 AM PST Hey guys, for several years now I'm working on increasing my online security/privacy, but I never started using linux. I read myself into the stuff, I informed myself about some parts of the materia and now I decided to switch and start by testing and getting used to it. I really want to increase privacy so I would like to run everything on Qubes OS - probably with whonix and tails - (fix is only qubes yet, the other stuff I first have to try what fits me best) to compartamentalize my whole online appearance. Now to my questions: 1. Is there anything I have to take into consideration with the security of e.g. a SSD? For example: are there any open source SSDs or are what problematics should I take into consideration by standard SSDs which aren't open source? Is there any product where I could be pretty sure that the company or another third party can't betray me (like they do with the backdoors of minix for example) bc of the way the hard drive is build? Like "privacy by design"? 2. If I boot a Laptop or PC and I miss to navigate into the boot settings and instead of booting from my hard drive it boots from their hard drive I could have the problem that the other system could be fraudulent e.g. bc of a spyware which then could get into my hard drive as well. Can I protect myself from such a problem by encrypting my hard drive or is there any way to keep the hard drive unacessible if a mistake like this happens? 3. I understand it right that Qubes OS is just a bottom layer which allows me to compartamentalize my system but in addition to qubes I need separate OS for my compartements? I'm thankful for any good tips and explanations. [link] [comments] |
