Working on selling my XPS 13 2-in-1 because I replaced it with an HP Spectre x360 14. Organized some of my thoughts on why I made the switch here. Anyone with a similar experience?

Need help upgrading SSD/RAM of my laptop

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:10 AM PST

Hello guys! Some help needed. Basically my father needed a laptop for normal basic tasks - Word, PDF, 3/4 tabs of Chrome (google searches/email). Since it was honestly quite basic and he didn't want to spend a lot, dumbass me decided to get him a Lenovo Ideapad (S340-14IWL) with 1TB HDD and 4 GB RAM.

Regretted it almost within a few minutes of using it. Doing almost anything seems painfully slow. I didn't know that an HDD would be that slow but well too late. So now i'm thinking of getting him both a RAM and SSD upgrade. I've searched a lot around this because I didn't want to just go ahead and post without my own looking around/research. But this is the first time i'm upgrading anything and well I need to be sure both these products are compatible with my father's laptop otherwise i'm gonna make everything worse.

For RAM I found this Crucial DDR4 8 GB; and for an M.2 SSD I came across this WD one or this Crucial SSD. AFAIK both the RAM and SSD's seem compatible according to the specs here.

So - 1) should i go ahead? Do you have any other suggestions for me? - 2) From the 2 SSDs I linked above, which one would you recommend? The WD is like $5 cheaper and has better reviews as well so should I get that instead? If anyone's wondering why I didn't go for a SATA SSD I thought that getting an M.2 NVMe meant the HDD could still be used and its faster anyways. Correct me if i'm wrong please.

Like I said before, first time i'm doing this and i can't risk it, so here I am, needing confirmation that both the upgrades will be worth it and will work without any issues hopefully. My father's gonna use the laptop for like another 4/5 years so yeah. Honestly i'm sorry if my question's dumb. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Have a good day <3

    Recommendation for 14/15" gaming/work laptop

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:14 AM PST

Hi guys, I've been using an HP Pavilion laptop for the last 4-5 years, and I was interested in buying a new laptop. I'm a bit lost considering how many choices there are, but I have a few things I need so maybe you could help me choose the best laptop for me.

Main uses: classes (both from home and "soon" IRL), gaming (mainly overwatch/FPS and strategy games, which I can't really play on my consoles), photoshop/Lightroom and web.

I don't care about being able to play 4K 144Hz with max graphics, I just want to be able to play my games with a stable 60+ FPS and decent graphics. I'm using a monitor anyway for gaming, so I don't really care if the laptop screen is 144Hz or not standard 60/50. My current GC is a GTX1060, so going to an RTX2060 might be nice, I'm not sure updating to a 1660 (which seem to be common after RTX2060) would be worth buying a new laptop.

I'd prefer a 14-15" laptop since I might carry it around at uni/work. I don't care too much about temperature, but I'd prefer to avoid noisy fans (which seems to be an issue with Asus G15/G15 laptops) since I use my laptop for work and usually without headphones.

Technical requirements: ideally a webcam and an SD card slot, a decent amount of USB ports (3), maybe an ethernet port, and 1Tb SSD (it isn't a deal breaker, if you get me a nice laptop with only 512Gb it's fine).

Budget: something between 1000 and 1500$ is fine, maybe more (I need to add 50% to everything since I live in Switzerland...).

Thanks a lot for reading, and looking forward to your recommendations.

Looking for LCD panel upgrade options Acer Nitro AN515

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:10 AM PST

    I have the 2018 model Nitro 5 AN515

the 1080p screen is subpar by reviews and mine has a major image retention(ghosting) issue as well

Are there any good panel upgrades for under $100? The ones I've found on amazon do not list brightness rating or color gamut. I'm not interested in 120Hz+ or anything just a higher quality picture

Lenovo thinkpad t440p. Worth it today?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:44 PM PST

    Hey all

First time poster. I have an opportunity to buy this laptop from my old work.

I have an old surface pro 4 i5 8gb that I'm currently using for university but these days it is struggling to keep up with my requirements (microsoft teams, power bi/tableau depending on the class) plus some light java "coding" on bluej and some python.

So my question now. Would the thinkpad be an upgrade? It must be right? It's an i7 processor with 16gb of RAM and ssd. I can get it for roughly $300

Whereas buying a new laptop with the same specs would be at the very least 1000+.

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

    Converting to SSD

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:30 PM PST

I have recently has 2 laptops quit working. I was able to reformat one several times to get me through until new laptop arrived. It died a few hours before the new one arrived. Both are stuck with a spinning circle. I am unable to boot at all. Tried to boot into safe mode. I do not have an external backup of either computer. I am assuming that the HDD failed in both and would like to replace the HDD in both of them with SSD.

I need any advice you can offer. I have done minor repairs on desktop, but nothing on laptops. Do I have any options for getting info and operating system off the HDD? I do have a kit I have used to harvest info from old drives. If not, what can I do? load Linux?

Also, while I am opening it up is there anything else I should upgrade? Do not know if they are maxed out on RAM. Do I have to change it all or can I add another brand to what I there?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Laptop Recommendation for web/app dev student

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:11 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1200-1800USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality is important, form factor too.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      10-13 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Visual Studio
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Reliable build quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have a Surface Pro 3 right now. Thinking of upgrading to the Surface Pro 7 (i5,8gb,256) or MacBook Air M1(8CPU,7GPU, 8 or 16gb, 256gb), but open to hear more opinions. I have a type cover for the surface pro.

Does anyone know what the maximum storage and gen 3 or 4 nvme can the A4DEK-005 take?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:44 AM PST

Googling the question itself isn't giving me clear answers. I'm trying to figure out what's the maximum capacity storage it can take. Plus, either gen 3 or gen 4.

    Freesync and laptops

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:37 AM PST

Now that I've used adaptive sync on my desktop for years, I'll never go back to screen tearing vsync. I'm looking at gaming laptops and I see a lot of laptops with Ryzen APUs and Nvidia GPUs. Very rarely do I see a mention of Freesync or G-Sync.

Are all of these mid-range laptops being sold without any adaptive sync tech? My GF has a 5 year old laptop with G-sync so I'm really surprised. Do people just put up with screen tearing on gaming laptops? Is adaptive sync perhaps "built-in" to the Ryzen APU and laptop display and companies just dont use the trade-marked terms in marketing?

Video Editing Laptop for under £1500

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:29 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (£) and country of purchase
      £1,500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'm not an expert, so which ever is most important for powerful video editing is priority. Good build quality a must though.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not too big a deal.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      17.3-inch ideally
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Aftereffects, Gimp, Filmora.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not priority
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Comfortable keyboard, Good build quality (hinges on previous laptop was very poor)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have zero experience using Macs, so I am not looking for a Macbook. To elaborate on the poor quality hinges on my previous system, I got the laptop from PC Specialist in the UK and it isn't one big hinge connecting the creen and keyboard, it was 2 hinges on either end of the screen connecting to the keyboard. Very plastic design and poor build quality in general.

Thank you for any responses in advance

    Help - Laptop not Starting

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:13 AM PST

    Hi Hope your well,

Well I was updating my windows and shut off my laptop 🤦🏻‍♂️ since that time I'm unable to start my laptop.

My power button just blinks and turns off. The fan tries to start but doesn't.

Things I've tried - took off the battery and i held the power button for 30 seconds, 1 minute and more too... then put it back and tried to turn on... -took out the motherboard battery and kept it for more than 20 minutes. - checked the ram -cleaned everything (fans, ram components)

G5 vs F15 advice needed please

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:08 AM PST

    Hey All.

I need advice on which laptop I should lean towards?

I'm looking for a <£1000 gaming laptop to replace my desktop as I don't have space.

I'm looking at either the GIGABYTE G5 i5 model or the ASUS F15. They are both £1k and very similar specs, the main difference is the ram and processor. The G5 has more ram than the F15 but has an i5, where the F15 has an i7. I'm not sure if the processor difference matters much as the i5 has more cores than the i7.

I'm happy with any other alternatives for around the same price.

    Thanks.

    Laptop’s with a decent budget

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:18 AM PST

I want the best laptop for university that's around 1000 pounds/dollars. Obviously the apple mac is the go to but there's definitely better ones out there for the same price but I just don't know what, any recommendations are helpful.
