This happend today, it didn't happen to me, but to a colleague.

I work in IT department of a government university, it happened in the departement and all of us were there.

So this student(Research Fellow) comes to the department and tells my colleague that her laptop isn't working properly, that it's too slow and the screen goes black at times.

He is a technical assistant and as per his job he starts the basic troubleshooting procedure. He checks the system for malware and updates, next he would have performed a disk cleanup but inbetween she interfere and asks him if he could instead provide her with a replacement(The laptops are provided to students from the laptop bank).

Upon her insisting, before providing her with a replacement he needs to make sure that there are problem with the system. The computer didn't reboot when he was using it, so the screen going black can be a graphic driver issue.

So he copies the correct graphic driver file from our local FTP server and installs it. But the driver didn't install. He tries again and and it fails again. This time he reads the error message, which said, the driver isn't compatible with this system.

At thiis point he we consfused, so he thought he'll update the driver online by opening device manager.

He usually open the device manager by going to -> My PC -> Properties -> Device Manager, and good for him that he took this route.

So when he is in the properties windows, he saw something weird. The processor mentioned was Intel Core i3 but the system we provided to the students were equiped with Intel Core i7.

At this point we asked the student if she got the laptop repaired and the answer was yes. Seems like when she was home(the campus was closed for students due to corona) she got it repaired from some shadey market for a very low price.

After that ensued an emotional drama, we told her straight forward that this won't work becuase the laptop wasn't her property and she should have contacted the IT department.

We didn't fine her(maybe yet), but she is stuck with the same laptop unless the same make and model is available in the laptop bank.

Edit:- Seems like the matter is settled, we won't be taking any action towards here, she won't be fined. My colleague even installed a fresh copy of windows on her system and installed all the necessary drivers and softwares she might need.

Electrical safety is just a game to them

I used to work at a store that sold, but also bought and repaired, arcade machines.

One day, I saw a cocktail style video game with one of the covers missing, exposing several areas where high voltage would be present. Yes, it was plugged in and running like that. So, I go to just unplug it. Dumb and Dumber both protest against unplugging it. I ask them if kids ever come in the store. When they say yes, I explain that there is high voltage wiring exposed, and the store could get sued if a kid puts his hand in it.

Instead of unplugging it and having any further argument with them, I decide to just turn it and move it so the hole is up against the wall. This wouldn't block the player's joystick, so people could still play it.

I ask where there is wood or plastic we could make an extra cover from, and if one of them can find me a tape measure so that I can measure the empty space. They say they have no idea where any of that would be. Then, of course, Dumb grabs the machine and moves it back to re-expose the hole. Being that the "liability" aspect is completely lost on them, I try to get them to move it to the back because "you wouldn't want the customer to think we're trying to sell something we haven't finished repairing, would you?"

They still insisted that, come hail or high water, the machine was staying right there, plugged in with the boards and wiring exposed. And yes, that included the high voltage for the CRT and from the wall socket, not the 12v and 5v for the motherboard. I honestly thought about cutting the darn cord off, but then I'd be damaging the store's property, giving Dumb and Dumber something to report.

I emailed the owner, but what I didn't realize at the time was that the computer had a "common" account for everybody, and the owner just had his email signed in on that computer. Therefore, Dumb and Dumber probably just erased it and the owner never saw it. The owner wasn't there for me to go get him, and one of the guys did eventually make a cover to put on there, before the owner came back. I so wish I would have taken a picture and shown it to the owner, except the idiots were standing right there so it would have been pretty obvious I was taking pictures to show to the owner later.

Just because they were still there doesn't mean the boss never saw it, but what makes me think he never saw it is that they were just as haphazard and kludgy with their work as before, and still tried to "enforce" their carelessness on me when I tried to do anything properly in their presence. So basically nothing changed.

They even took my "wouldn't want a customer to see that" comment and decided to spite me by putting other machines that were both in terrible cosmetic condition, and were barely even functional, or didn't work at all. Some also had obvious hack repairs, probably courtesy of Dumb and Dumber. All of which were complete with exorbitant price tags that belonged on collectible arcade machines in near-mint condition, not some crap they found in the parking lot of an arcade on garbage day.

The store wasn't known for the quality of customer service (especially their "repairs") and they eventually went out of business.

TL;DR: Coworker won't let me unplug a game that has exposed wiring.
