It seems 16:9 ratio is finally on its way out. All hail screen real estate and black bars.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 12:47 AM PST

Microsoft, DELL, Acer, HP and now LG and Lenovo are embracing 3:2 and 16:10. Add Apple, Huawei and Chuwi to that.

Razer Blade 15 Base or Lenovo Legion 7i?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 02:36 PM PST

After seeing many reviews I still undecided what laptop I want to buy. Anyway I want to pick one of those laptops:

    Lenovo Legion 7i - Especifications that I'm looking for: -- 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10750H -- 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare with Dolby Vision™, HDR 400, 500 nits, 144Hz -- 16 GB DDR4 2933MHz (2 x 8 GB) -- 512 GB PCIe SSD -- NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 with Max-Q 8GB -- RGB Backlit

    Razer Blade 15 Base - Especifications that I'm looking for: -- 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10750H -- 15.6" Full HD 144Hz, 100% sRGB, 4.9 mm bezel, factory calibrated -- 16GB Dual-Channel (8GB x 2) DDR4-2933MHz -- 512GB SSD (M.2 NVMe) -- NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 with Max-Q (8GB GDDR6 VRAM) -- Single-zone RGB powered by Razer Chroma™

Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: R$ 20.000 - Brazil

Are you open to refurbs/used? Not at all.

How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life (specifically, how many hours)? - For the price that I'm pretend to spent I want something premium in terms of build quality. - My main concerns it's about thermal performance. Both models have great specs. So, the thermal performance will be a big difference to my intend. - Battery it's a quite indifferent to me. Around 4 hours it's a great point though.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm a software developer, working with a lot a tools that needs great processing. But I'm designer too so I need a screen with a great color accuracy. I'm a video editing enthusiast and sometimes a gamer too.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO, The Witcher, Skyrim, The Last Of Us, World Of Warcraft, Magic: The Gathering Arena

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ports/Slots it's most important to me.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for some tiebreaker criteria. Even some people saying that Lenovo Legion 7i have a not great thermal performance system, a lot of another reviewers saying the opposite in certain terms. I'm think the Lenovo does some updates after Dave's review but I'm just supposing.

Sorry for my english is not so good. And thanks for any reply!

Need help with Legion 5 vs Helios 300!

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 02:27 PM PST

I've been having a hard time. I can't choose on which one to get. I want a laptop that can run emulators really well, but I actually mainly game on my PS5. I primarily need a laptop for Music Production/Video Edits and for School.

The Legion I'm looking at has:

    AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, GTX 1660ti, 16G RAM, 512 SSD and 1TB HDD

The Helios I'm looking at has:

    i7-10750h, RTX 2060, 16G Ram, 512 SSD

    Both are around same price.

Lenovo Yoga 6 or HP Pavilion x360 2x1

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 02:24 PM PST

I recently purchased the HP 14-dw1098nr ($600) but am considering eating the $60 restocking fee and returning it for the Lenovo ($549) cost will even out.

Lenovo with Ryzen 4650u & HP with core i5 1135 g7.. all other specs the same (8/16/256).

Used for streaming, web browsing, light business and light video editing. Looking for performance, reliability and longevity.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 vs Ideapad Flex 5i

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 02:02 PM PST

    Hi guys,

On the hunt for a new laptop and really interested in the Lenovo Ideapad flex 5 range either the Ryzen 5 or i7.

Both out of stock everywhere seemingly due to massive chip shortages.

Though weirdly the 5i version seems to be available everywhere.

Basically I can't seem to find any comparisons of what the difference actually is between the 5 and 5i range you see on sale.

Are 5i a toned down 'budget' version or a newer model?

While the standard 5i seems to come with an i3 or ryzen 3 it it seems like you can easily customise the 5i on the Lenovo website and upgrade it to any processor you like.

So my question is - would a ideapad flex 5i running a ryzen 5 actually be any different to a ideapad flex 5 running ryzen 5?

Should I be waiting for the 5 to come back into stock or just go with a customised 5i running the same processor?

Is MSI GF63 Thin good for gaming?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 12:47 PM PST

I don't know much about laptops in general but recently I've been thinking about but the MSI GF63 Thin. I'm mainly looking for something that is reliable and can run games well (mainly Minecraft). So would buying the GF63 thin be a good choice? Also if it's not feel free to suggest any good gaming laptops that are under $1,000. Thanks!

Will adding more RAM to this laptop (HP Intel i3 7th Gen, 4GB RAM, SSD) help me?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 08:20 AM PST

So I finally decided to chuck away my two old laptops thaf were really outdated and took this HP Laptop my dad bought a few months ago but never used. It has an Intel i3 7020U, 4 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD internal + 1 TB external. System info says the model is HP Laptop 15s-du0xxx

I don't have very complex use case. I use Chrome with a lot of tabs open, but do very basic web browsing. I do some basic scripting too. I am into quadcopters, so I run some software like Mission Planner, QGround Control, BL Heli Suite etc. I might want to use some very light weight simulators in the future, and do very light weight CAD stuff, but with caution.

I am planning on adding more RAM but am unsure if the 7th gen i3 would be sufficient for my use case. What do you think? Would adding something like 8 or 16GB be extreme/unnecessary? I know 4GB is limiting. I am just asking whether it is worth it on this laptop.

(I don't let any useless tasks run in background ever, and have everything optimized for best performance, so hopefully I can squeeze a little hit more out of this machine)

Also, how do I check the exact specs of my RAM, the number of RAM slots and even if my RAM is replaceable or not?

Extremely low FPS on games after reformat

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 07:44 AM PST

I've recently replaced my laptop's hdd with an ssd because the hdd got corrupted and I couldn't initiate windows bootup anymore. After installing the ssd and reinstalling windows 10 however, I've been getting really low fps on any game I play. The IT guy who helped me reinstall windows installed a universal driver but I've also downloaded and installed nvidia's latest game ready drivers, but to no avail the fps is still not improving.

Back then my laptop could do at least 50 fps on games like valorant and csgo, but after the reformat and new ssd I can barely get above 10 fps, even on games like terraria. If anyone has any tips or solutions to this that'd be very much appreciated!

Laptops specs are: Intel i3-7100u Nvidia GEFORCE 930mx

Where to get the Asus ZenBook 14 UX425EA-SH74 for the best price?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 10:49 AM PST

I have my eye on the Asus ZenBook 14 UX425EA-SH74 (16GB RAM) for the newest generation processor, top-notch battery life, and its light weight. I can't seem to find it for less than $1150 and even so, it seems rarely available anywhere. Seems to be the best in those specs, and the 8GB RAM version is only $900 and more easily purchased--I just want at least 12GB if not 16GB RAM.

Its scant availability in the USA seems to be propping up the price in the few places, though. Should this laptop be around $1000 or a bit more, as I seem to think? Any idea where I can get it at that price?

And if $1150 is the best I should expect, is there a 14" laptop anyone can suggest that could give really long battery life with the 11th gen Intel CPU/Iris Xe GPU at a lower price or better quality for the same price?

How do I connect my Huawei d14 with an Ethernet cable?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 02:44 AM PST

So I'm at a university accommodation which has crap connectivity. The WiFi keeps disconnecting randomly on my laptop and phone. There's no IT people here as it's an outside company that provides it, so I wanted to use an Ethernet cable and see if that would stop the disconnections (since I need it for my online lessons). As I never expected to use an Ethernet cable when I first bought it, I didn't even recognise there's no typical Ethernet port on the side, so I don't know how to connect it to the port in the wall (no routers in room). The port in the wall has the typical Ethernet shape, but my laptop doesn't. I'm in the uk if that needs to be known.

    Laptop hibernates itself when booting.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 10:05 AM PST

Hello. This problem started about 4 months ago. I have dual booted win with Ubuntu. When I boot to windows, I log in, and after typing my password, I can see welcome, but then it hibernates. I can successfully boot to ubuntu, and windows in safe mode. Already tried sfc scannow command, didn't help. Also tried power troubleshooter.

I don't know if this is related to the problem, I can't use it anymore without cable, and when using, the battery is jumping from 0 to directly 100, and then back to 0.

    What can I do?

    Laptop Recommendation

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 09:46 AM PST

    Hello there,

I am in the market for a laptop primarily for photo editing, music production, website design etc. Essentially something versatile for various aspirational projects of mine over the next few years. Ideally it would have decent storage & a fairly large screen. Any recommendations? Budget of anywhere from £500-£850. This can be slightly more but I would rather keep it in these parameters.

    Thank you kindly.
