Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:37 PM PST After I launch a video and then close the app, it will stay in system tray. After that it's impossible to play a new video or even close it. System is up to date I tried the terminal kill command but it just stays open. Edit: The issue seems to happen when I press the x button, if I press ctrl q the app works fine [link] [comments] |
Apps just won't open? Is there a command to open them? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:52 PM PST I just started using the linux beta on my chromebook for the first time today. I downloaded steam and minecraft. With minecraft, sometimes it'll open perfectly fine (well, really slowly), and sometimes I'll click on it, it'l flash sort of like it opened and instantly closed and nothing happens. With steam I got this error message, but when I went to the link it didn't help. The display was already at 0, and I don't know how to enable X Is there a command or anything I can do that'll run the programs instead of clicking on them and hoping that they'll work? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:33 PM PST I recently just put Pop!_OS on an older HP pavilion with a touch screen. I'm familiar but still new with Linux. A couple of weeks ago I switched my main machine from Windows to Ubuntu 20.04. I wanted to try and game on it and I ran into problems, so I hit up r/linuxgaming, and they just..tore me a new one. I ended up switching back to windows. Anyway, I want to learn more of what I can do with this OS. Kinda looking for a beginners guide for the terminal and other neat and fun stuff. Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:50 PM PST Firstly, thank you for reading this, let me explain, I have tried to install many distros, in most cases, they don't at all, they sort of "freeze" during the installation, I'm not sure if all of them freeze entirely, I thought so, until I saw that during my elementary installation, I could actually move the cursor, it just took like 5-10 minutes to change position. Then, with the distros that barely installed (Q04OS, Deepin and manjaro) Q4OS, worked flawlessly but just on the first boot, then when I started the system I encountered a black screen that asked for my account and password, introduced them and nothing happened, just like I logged in from a terminal but not getting a GUI. Deepin seemed to work fine, but it just freezed constantly for example I was adjusting settings, and if I clicked another tab, I would just freeze for 5-10 minutes and then I could continue using the system. Manjaro was the nearest I got to linux working on this machine, I tried XCFE and KDE variants, both installed, KDE just after 3 boots, became so slow it was basically useless, even discord calls sounded distorted, processor always 100% XFCE seemed to work fine and I was actually trying to setup long term, but just one time, the system suspended, and normally I just moved the mouse, and I would introduce my password and everything was alright, however this time didn't get any image. Rebooted, and I just saw the HP logo, it seemed like a freeze and that the system didn't load, but I know it did, because the display's brightness changed (Since the last time I used it, it was on the lowest) The only time it gave me any image, it briefly said "Failed to start light display manager", oh an also here and other distros, when rebooting, sometimes it said something like error with pcie or something along those lines, it was the same but it scrolled too fast to read it (And at the beggining had a number that increased as more lines appeared) however, this didn't break the system, it just happened to some distros. My laptop is an HP with an i5 6200u, intel hd graphics 520, it is actually the star wars model, I suppose it is a problem with HP, because in my desktop, I don't have any problems ever installing any distro. Also, I don't think it is secure boot, because it has no problem running windows, and windows server explicitly said it required secure boot to be disabled, and it installed with no problems whatsoever. Thank you a lot for reading all of this, I really appreciate it, what can I do? I wouldn't like my laptop to stay with windows, I think I can squeeze more performance out of a more optimized operating system. EDIT: I must also add, it has 6 gigs of ram, and windows 10 runs flawlessly, in the distros that I installed, ram didn't exceed 2.5 gb even when browsing, so performance isn't an issue, as well as the SSD because Windows doesn't have any of these problems (But I don't wanna stay in Windows) [link] [comments] |

password protecting text files? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:02 PM PST Does anyone know of any software or program where I can password protect files but still keep adding text to them and also where the encryption isn't super weak. [link] [comments] |

What can I do? My device is Macbook air 2019 with big sur. I have refind installed, secure boot disabled, booting from external media enabled. Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:30 PM PST I've been running an ftp server in Win7 IIS and wanted to ditch Windows completely so I installed vsftpd on Kubuntu 20.x on a 120GB hard drive and created a test file 'TEST_FILE' in /srv/ftp. When I access the ftp site the 'TEST_FILE' folder is visible and readable. Hooray! But TEST_FILE is a very small folder. I want to add 14TB of media files to my vsftpd server - a 4TB directory of movies, /media/oops/4TB_T1500_MOVIES, and 10TB of TV shows, /media/oops/10TB_T1500_TV. These folders are way to large to fit in the /srv/ftp folder on the 120GB drive. On Win7 IIS I just have to right click on the name of the ftp site and I get the option to add a virtual directory and then just navigate to it and select it. The virtual directory folder I choose can be on the C: drive or on an external drive. How do I do that in vsftpd in Linux? I read some stuff about symbolic links and tried a few things but I'm just groping in the dark here. Can anybody help or give me a kick in the right direction? I have 'anonymous_enable=' set to YES, and commented out 'local_enable=YES' and 'write_enable=YES' . That's the way I want my ftp server, anyone can access it but nobody can write to it. I'm reading a lot of stuff about chroot and confining clients to home folders but I don't think that's an issue in my case. I just want a way to send clients to my media disks. [link] [comments] |
How do you snap windows to corners using hot keys in xfce? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:02 PM PST I previously used mate, and I remember being able to snap windows to corners using superkey + arrow. Now in xfce, all this does is open up the app launcher. Is there any way to configure keyboard bindings to do this? [link] [comments] |
GNOME- having trouble disabling dash-to-dock extension shortcuts Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:54 PM PST I have a bit of a problem. I want to change my shortcuts to resemble the i3 window manager, but Super+2, Super+3 and so on still open system applications, even though I have checked that the relevant shortcuts are disabled in dconf editor, GNOME Tweaks (where they are explicitly off) and the Settings app itself. What "metered network" setting does in `nm-connection-editor` Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:38 PM PST I'm using Manjaro XFCE on my laptop, and connected to the internet via my phone (since the WIFI network keeps dropping out presently). I often keep Steam open after playing a game, which will sometimes update games automatically using up my precious mobile data. I've noticed that I can set my mobile hotspot connection to metered under [link] [comments] |
Why is cut giving me a different number of lines? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:55 PM PST I have a file with exactly 116242 lines in it. I want to cut the first 3 columns and pipe to a new file. I run this: $ cut -f1,2,3 file1 > file2 In file2 I have 115378 lines. Wtf is going on? I expect to have 116242 lines, except with only the first 3 columns from file1. Wtf is it doing and why am I losing 1000 lines from this? [link] [comments] |
Chromium/Firefox hardware acceleration on AMD APUs Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST I've seen several tutorials that explain how to enable hardware acceleration on Intel and Nvidia GPUs, but nothing about AMD, is there a possibility to enable this feature on Ryzen APUs (Vega GPU)? Currently I use pop_os and the cpu usage reaches 45% just by watching a video on YouTube at 1080p, my laptop fans start to make noise and it's annoying. [link] [comments] |

While upgrading ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 it's terminating repeatedly Posted: 29 Dec 2020 11:58 AM PST An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This was likely caused by: * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and try the upgrade again. If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log' I tried synaptic software and other commands available in ask ubuntu but didn't work out at all. No idea how to solve it now. pls help [link] [comments] |

Can anyone tell me what these commands do and how is it possible? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:04 AM PST So, I just started using Linux and I'm literally blown away by the amount of freedom, personalization and customization that you can achieve using just FOSS. I download KDE Connect and am using GSConnect on my GNOME DE. I looked into the run commands section and found out that I could lock and unlock my computer from my phone. However, I soon realized that I am not entering the password for my profile and something seems off. Here are the commands: Lock. Unlock. So basically, I'm able to gain access to my system without the need for a password (which seems like a major reason why someone would avoid using this command). While I guess the lock command opens up a terminal in the background, runs the command and locks me out (sort of like systemctl suspend), I can't understand how the unlock command works. Just to be clear, I'm using GNOME Shell 3.36.4. [link] [comments] |

Installed Linux on separate disk and after removal still pressent in boot. Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:47 AM PST Recently I installed Kubuntu on second SSD drive and had some problems with configuration so i thought I could just go to Diskpart on my windows partition that fills whole NVMe drive, and simply select disk and clear it right away as I often do. After Linux was removed I rebooted an was welcomed by Grub prompt. I rebooted to boot menu and saw that there still was a Ubuntu tu entry, but on the NVMe that stores Windows. I recon that while installing Linux, Windows Bootloader cought up to chaise and saved this system as viable boot option. But after deletion it seems to not go away. I tried to offline second drive, also did use bcdedit and there was no entry for Ubuntu and done bootrec.exe /fixmbr but it still didn't Vanish Ubuntu entry. I recon this entry is simply grub that was placed inside bootloader and has nothing to do beside occupying boot menu. I'm going to install Kubuntu Once more and I'm scared it can mess up with my Windows boot where I have a lot of games and data that i would want to lose. I'm running: Win Build 19042.685 Windows 10 pro Msi tomahawk max b450 R5 3600 Kubuntu version. 20.04 TLS [link] [comments] |
