Which spec is going to suit my needs better?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 04:12 AM PDT

I'm pretty much sold on the design and feel of the HP Envy x360 15inch, I just need some help choosing the right processor.
I don't know a whole lot about Intel v AMD, so any advice would be appreciated!

    I can either roll with:

    Intel AMD
Processor Intel Core i7-10510U processor (1.8 - 4.9GHz) AMD Ryzen 7 4700U (2.0 GHz base clock, up to 4.2 GHz max boost clock, 4 MB L2 cache, 8 cores)
    Memory 512GB SSD 512GB SSD
    RAM 16GB 16GB
32GB Intel Optane (I don't know what this means)
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce MX330 graphics processor Integrated AMD Radeon Graphics
    Price $2550AUD $2499AUD

I'm mostly going to be using this for recording music. Not huge productions, mostly just promos for my acoustic duo; 1-2 vocal tracks, 1-2 guitars (acoustic and electric), piano/synth, and very light percussion. I have Adobe Audition and Ableton.
Maybe some DJing down the track too.

I'll also do some basic video editing in Premiere, light graphics in AfterEffects and some Photoshop/Illustrator work.

    OLED and high refresh rate.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:34 PM PDT

I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S20+ and I have become absolutely spoiled by its gorgeous OLED display and super smooth 120hz. I am in the market for a new laptop as well and I don't think I can buy a laptop without these features. What would you all suggest I get? I know Samsung has a galaxy book, but I need my laptop to run x86 capable apps. Also, I hope to avoid the "gamer" aesthetic if at all possible. Thanks in advance.

Help me in buying my first laptop : budget less than 65000 (indian Rupees), usage : day-to-day work, moderate gaming, image editing (photoshop, Lightroom).

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) : 65000 (Indian Rupees). Buying the laptop in India.

Are you open to refurbs/used? No. Want to buy a new one.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Under that budget - good build quality, good performance, good battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a big deal unless it's super-heavy! Preferably less than 2 kgs.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 inch or 15.6 inch.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes - I'd like to do photo editing and moderate gaming. Programs I'd likely run - Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom for image editing. For gaming mostly - Fifa 19/20, Football Manager.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I guess 60 fps is good enough.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I guess good build quality. Also decent colour accuracy (good sRGB value within that price point).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have been using a potato PC since 2012 which ran only FIFA 14 (playing for 7 years straight!) and Lightroom 5.6. It has recently given up on me hence I decided that it's time to buy a laptop. Need your help as I lack knowledge regarding what laptop would be the best for me.

Replacing a 9 year old Zenbook

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:30 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm looking to replace my 9 year old Asus Zenbook Ultrabook(i7 4G RAM 128G SSD 14 inch). I remember I got it for $1100 on Black Friday deal with original price at $1700 at that time. It runs well after I formatted a few times along this 9 year run but now it's showing some wear and tare damages on the hardware that are hard to fix, so I decided it's about time to let go. I work in business consulting, so moderate typing with lots of browsing and zoom conferencing are the primary usage. I do carry this around so must be lightweight. My budget is around $1000, hopefully under. So far I like the new Zenbook 14 (no 2nd screen) and 14 inch Yoga but definitely open to other suggestions, especially good deals. Thanks guys!

Oh also, someone suggest me to get matte finished monitor and stay away from 4K. Is that true?

Ultrabook preferred. Build quality is very important. Is replacing an aluminium chassis laptop that has been extremely durable. I'd like to have similar quality build.

Then battery life, and finally performance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thin and light is very important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13" or less.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Aluminium or other lightweight metal chassis

High resolution screen (> Full HD, QHD+ or similar)

Reasonable processor. The Core M3-6Y30 hasn't been acceptable, but would prefer something a bit faster.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop is to replace an Asus UX305C. I bought it 4 and half years ago, and it's been an excellent laptop. I got it on a deal for £550, with a QHD+ (3200×1800) display, 128 GB SSD, lovely metal chassis, thin frame 12.3mm. I'm struggling to see similar value laptops almost 5 years later. I was wondering what sort of laptops people would recommend as an improvement on it.

Laptop for astrophysics PhD student, Italy, <1400€

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:48 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <1400€, Italy
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer not to going for a 2 in 1 laptop, but I'd rather pick best specs over good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not so important, but I would avoid some heavy weight on my shoulders.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer Ubuntu over anything, I got used to it for work.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I may need to run quite heavy numerical simulations/solving equations, I need a nice CPU rather than graphic power.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I sometimes play Dota 2, a laptop that can run it would definitely be a plus.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like to have something responsive, better >512 Gb of SSD. It is really important to have Ubuntu pre-installed. I was looking around System 76 but it is quite expensive and coming from US. Then i checked Slimbooks , Tuxedo Computers and Dell, but I would like to have some suggestions.

    Thank you for your help!

    Help choosing laptop for college

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:43 AM PDT

Hey guys, im a first year engineering student in need of a new laptop, i was looking at acer nitro 5, i5 9300h paired with a 1650 for 950$, but saw the alienware 13 r3 with i5 7300hq and a 1050ti 2gb for 850$, i really like the portability and build quality of the alienware, especially its oled display, so should i go for it or are its specs too lackluster. Im especially worried about the 7300hq as it lacks hyperthreading. I will be using this laptop for university (CpE) and some light gaming.

Please help me decide between these two laptops

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:41 AM PDT

I will be using the laptop for programming and college use(no video rendering, nor gaming). Amazon has a great deal for the Swift 3 with Ryzen 5 4500U, and I want to know if it will be a noticeable difference between the Swift 3 with the Ryzen 7 4700U.

    Here are the links:

    Acer Swift 3 w/ Ryzen 5 4500U $589 with discount

    Acer Swift 3 w/ Ryzen 7 4700U $655 with discount.

Are theese $66 worth saving? Or should I go with the one with the Ryzen 7 4700U because it's worth the money?

    Suggestion for First Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:10 PM PDT

Currently, I am looking between a Lenovo Legion 5 and a HP Omen 15 for my first gaming laptop. But while the specs are similar (with a slight nudge for the Legion 5), I am unsure on how much of a difference the two builds are from each other aside from the specs. I am also open to waiting if there is a chance that something better is right around the corner. (I do not know the timeline that new laptops are released in.)

    Lenovo Legion 5 - $999

    • AMD Ryzen 7 4800H
    • Nivida GTX 1660Ti
    • 16 GB RAM
    • 144hz FHD Screen 300 nits
    • White Backlit Keys

    HP Omen 15 - $999 $1299

    • AMD Ryzen 7 4800H
    • Nivida GTX 1660Ti
    • 8 GB RAM
    • 144hz FHD Screen 300 nits
    • RGB Keys

    * I was originally debating between the two since they were originally the same price, with the only difference being that the Omen 15 had less RAM and RGB keys. But the price for the Omen 15 has suddenly gone back up today, so there is a bit of a hypothetical in my question. *

So I was originally debating between the two since it seems like they are the two that most people would recommend in the $1000 range. I liked typing on the Lenovo when I could find a demo system in a store, but I was unable to try an Omen since I have not been able to find one on display in any stores near me. Even though the Legion 5 matched the Omen 15 in every category that I looked at, except for RAM (which is upgradable), I wanted to ask you all which one you would prefer at the price point of $999 and why would you recommend it over the other? Is there a reason that the Omen 15 is priced significantly higher than the Legion 5 for nearly the same specs? Should I be looking at builds with Intel rather than AMD, since it seems that those might be the builds that can have GTX 2060? Or are those moving out of my budget of roughly $1000?

(I would assume given the current price of the Omen 15 gives the Legion 5 the edge as the price difference for less RAM would not make too much sense. But please tell me if I am wrong to make that assumption. But there is a possibility that the Omen 15 might drop back to $999, so if you think that it would be worth waiting since I am not in dire need for a laptop at the moment, I am okay with that option as well if the reasons for the Omen 15 makes sense to wait.)

Very specific specs, hard to pin a perfect one

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:48 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    ~$1500 USD, flexible.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes, but would prefer new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor > performance > build quality > battery life. Form factor is the most important because it needs to be comfortable on the lap.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Digital Art.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No gaming on this laptop. Maybe light things but it's not important as we have a PC. Dedicated graphics card is a plus but not necessary.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

4k UHD IPS anti-glare OR equivalent AMOLED screen. Preferably AMOLED since this will be for art. Touch screen not necessary, non-touch actually preferred.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The laptops we were looking at are the Dell New XPS 15, the HP Spectre, and the OMEN Laptop 15t.

These are things that are pretty much minimum requirements:

    • intel i7 CPU, equivalent or better. Basically, something to handle the running art program
    • 16gb RAM
    • 256gb SSD (512gb preferred but will consider lower)
    • Screen as described above.

We want it to look like "a normal laptop". Touch screen, 2-in-1, gamer specs all not necessary and actually downsides, but it's not like we'll say no to a good laptop.

What do you think of the laptops we looked at already?

Thank you sooooo much for taking any time to look at this. Our brains have been burning trying to find "the perfect one". Also, sorry if I don't answer until tomorrow. I have to go to sleep.

also, PSA: never buy from lenovo. long story but TLDR it's been 2 months and they haven't given me a refund, and are claiming the box i returned is empty when i have proof it wasn't

Is the Huawei Matebook 14 good for an engineering student?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:03 PM PDT

I'm starting college this year in engineering and I'll be using programs like Solidworks and Spyder (for programming with python). I'm looking for a laptop at around 1000eur and I stumbled upon the Huawei Matebook 14 priced at 1300eur.

    Specs are:

    • i7-10510U Quad-Core, 1.80GHz;
    • 16GB DDR3 RAM;
    • Intel UHD Graphics + GeForce MX350 2GB GDDR5;
    • SSD 512GB;

I want a laptop that can run those programs with ease and can last for about 5-6 years. I've been told this laptop works just fine, but I've also been told to invest in a good CPU and GPU.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are there any laptops like this that aren’t expensive?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:47 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop that's good for watching livestreams (current laptop can't handle 1080p).

    • Budget/Country: - Preferably not over 1000 dollars (maybe not even at 1000 dollars)/ USA.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - Quality and performance are a must, don't really care about battery life since I don't go anywhere.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? - Not really.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run - PAINT.NET/GIMP. Maybe some video editing (don't know what programs yet), games are probably small and easy to work on a laptop so Stardew Valley, RPG Maker MV.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - Probably won't use it explicitly for gaming, but if it can run itch.io games like Kind Words that would be fine. I don't know much about stuff like that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • A laptop with a disc drive would be nice. Bluetooth, if that's possible. And maybe an SD card (but I can just get one of those without it being built into the laptop)

I prefer Windows OS. I don't know about screen size, but I wouldn't want it too small. I'd need a lot of GB, ram, and good CPU.

I'm not really good at stuff like this so sorry if I've left a confusing post.

Light gaming at 50 FPS is fine. Nothing hardcore.

I was looking at the Lenovo Ideapad S540. The specs seem good but I've heard from employees of different local stores that the hinge breaks on Lenovo's Ideapad laptops. Is this true?

17 inch gaming laptop (USA) (~$1600)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:13 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $1,600. Might be willing to go to $1700 but only if really necessary.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance, build quality, then form factor and battery life (really don't care too much about the last two)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Only 17 inch screens

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • I'd like to be able to play mainstream 3D games (e.g. COD, Destiny, Apex, League) at high settings 60fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • None

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I'd like a laptop that doesn't have the risk of running dangerously hot. I looked at the laptop suggestions at /r/gaminglaptops but all the 17 inch ones within my budget always seem to have issues with getting really hot (I actually didn't even know this was a huge problem but the way people talk about it it seems like it is). I don't want to have to buy a laptop then tweak it to reduce the temperatures inside. Thanks!

Is the ASUS ROG Strix G15 a good fit for someone who plays a good amount of League of Legends?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:25 PM PDT

Here's a link. I'm hoping to find something that will last me a long time while being a decent machine too. Other than LOL I play a few steam games, I don't think anything too intensive. I mostly just use the internet a lot otherwise. Maybe keep too many tabs open. Not sure of my budget yet but if you have other suggestions I'm all ears. I'm a complete noob so would love advice. Thanks.
