Using Product Keys From Old Computers

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 04:55 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I have a product key from an old HP that I am trying to use. I no longer have access to the pc itself, but I have removed the drive and attached it to my current PC build. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on why the Activation Key isn't working and how to fix it so it does. Thanks in advance.

[Windows 10] Boot straight to Bios, no EFI volume??

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Turned on my laptop in the morning and it's been stuck booting straight to bios. Tried turning on/off safe boot and fast boot with no luck. Tried to run sfc /f and keep getting errors when it tried to scan/fix system linkage. In diskpart list volumes I see only my OS, SYSTEM and RECOVERY volumes. Is there not supposed to be a EFI volume? Also this computer (2019 vivobook) only uses UEFI? There's no option for legacy in the bios.

Browsing with dir commands in cmd I can see my files are still there so I don't think the SSD is broken.

What can I do? I'm thinking this PoS tried updating on it's own overnight and got fucked up.

Weird task bar behavior, the file explorer icon shows a browser tab that I have open. Clicking this icon directly takes me to the browser tab too. I can however open a new instance of File explorer and it'll also show here.

.bat problems. toggle gets stuck in one position. trying to toggle audio sources

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:25 PM PDT

ok so here is the problem. im running this .bat code and what it is supposed to do is toggle my audio output every time it is opened. it worked for like 5 minutes and then suddenly broke

    @echo off

    set "$active="

    2> nul (set /P $active= < "%~nx0:active") || set "$active=sound"

    echo actual [%$active%]

    if /i "%$activ%"=="sound" (

    nircmd.exe setdefaultsounddevice "Headset"

    echo Headset>%~nx0:active

    ) else (

    nircmd.exe setdefaultsounddevice "SAMSUNG"

    echo Samsung>%~nx0:active

    )

    pause

the problem is that after like 5 minuts it stoped working. i dont know why.

it also creats a file to keep track of what is curently active.

when the TV audio is active it says

    Samsung sound.bat:active

and when the headphones are currently active it says headset sound.bat:active

the problem is that it is stuck only outputting from the TV audio and the file is stuck saying Samsung sound.bat:active

    can someone help?

this is going to be hard to explain...

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:46 PM PDT

lets say you have something you want to uninstall something right? and if you press uninstall it goes into control panel, like chrome for example if you drag it into the recycle bin does it actually delete it? i notice if i did that with edge it would just get rid of the icon on the desktop but thats because its indestructable so what happens if i put something in recycle bin like a steam game or something?

Using Wireless headphones turns off all other sounds when using the mic

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:48 PM PDT

So let me explain this a little clearer using an example (i tried with both Bose QC35 and the new Samsung Buds):

I am watching a Youtube Video (or listening to whatever online) and trying to record something simultaneously (which works fine with wired headphones). But whenever i start a recording, my video (or whatever is playing in the background) is muted during the recording.

Another more annoying example is when playing games with friends and using voice chat. Whenever the mic from my headphones is being used, everything else is getting fully muted (in game sounds).

The worst of all is when i'm in a zoom (or webex) call. I can't use the wireless headphones on my PC because i cannot hear the people i'm talking to (since the mic is being used to listen to me).

These problems do not appear when i'm using those headphones on my ipad or android phone, so that's why i suppose it's a Windows issue.

I already checked the "Do nothing" button in communications, but to no avail. I scoured the internet and found nothing helpful, so maybe someone here has an idea.

Laptop keeps crashing while doing menial tasks

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:17 PM PDT

So I'm a 3D animation student and recently made the switch from mac to windows by buying a new Windows laptop for school. It's been great but it keeps crashing randomly while doing really simple tasks and after a while it gets really annoying. I'll be doing something like rotating a cube or merging to vertices and it will just crash. The program will stop working but I am still able to move my mouse around and stuff. Like if I hover over something in my taskbar it will highlight it. Then after about 10 seconds I get the blue screen of death and the error code I get is "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER". Does anyone know why this is happening? I consulted the programs forums and it said common reasons include uncertified graphics cards which doesn't make sense because I have 2 in this new one and had a bad one in my crappy MacBook from 2012. Literally any help would be great. It's really angering me.

    Second account

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:03 AM PDT

Hey all, I recently came into possession of my mum's old laptop. After I cleaned it up, I did a reformat and ended up creating a new sign-in on it. However, now my home PC has my usual sign-in and the one I made on the laptop. I checked Family and other users under settings and the second one doesn't show up. How can I remove it from my home PC?

How to enable BitLocker system drive encryption on Windows 10 Home

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:34 AM PDT

This is not a question, this is the answer that I didn't manage to easily find while googling.

Officially Windows 10 Home does not support BitLocker GUI and that's fine, they don't want home users to lose access to their data.. however.. if you manage small business IT infrastructure you must find a way on how to protect company data even on devices that come with Windows 10 Home.

    So here we go..

    Prerequisites

(Run all commands from now on in cmd.exe as admin)

    • Disk with GPT (GUID Partition Table):

powershell Get-Disk 0 | findstr GPT && echo This is a GPT system disk!

    • Dedicated TPM module (v1.2+) or enabled Intel PTT in BIOS (not sure if AMD has such alternative):

powershell Get-WmiObject -Namespace "root/cimv2/security/microsofttpm" -Class WIN32_tpm | findstr "IsActivated IsEnabled IsOwned SpecVersion"

This must return 3 True values and spec version 1.2 or higher (first number).

Once your device meets the prerequisites

Access windows 10 Advanced Startup Options (press reboot while holding shift button)

go in to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt

Login with your account that has admin privileges and type this to start encryption:

    manage-bde -on c: -used

Once this is done, close the command prompt and continue to windows where perform following:

manage-bde c: -protectors -add -rp -tpm

    manage-bde -protectors -enable c:

    manage-bde -protectors -get c: > %UserProfile%\Desktop\BitLocker-Recovery-Key.txt

!!! Backup your BitLocker-Recovery-Key.txt which will be located on your desktop.

And voila, data on your system drive will soon be encrypted and protected, to check status of encryption use manage-bde -status

I just started using a Dell desktop from my father's company, it's linked to a network so I can't seem to erase the data... I can't download any application because it requires adminstration.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:23 AM PDT

While at the user section on the control panel my account says administrator, but I'm guessing the network administrator would be the one who controls everything. I can't even connect to wifi, there's no option on the network... My father doesn't know how to do it either, he just wants me to erase & restore but of course I can't.

    Any help will be appreciated!

    large file operations crashing win10

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:11 AM PDT

so i recently did a google takeout where then send you all your data.

they sent me 8, 50gb zips which i downloaded to my C: drive (1t nvme)

i then proceeded to transfer them to a hard disk (E: drive) and this is when the fun started.

    i had a couple questions.

    1. these transfers seemed to be very slow (100mb/s) i would have assumed nvme to sata3 drive would be faster, what could be slowing me down?

    2. after the transfers i then tried to delete the files from my c: drive and this operation continuously crashed windows. i basically had to delete 1 at a time, rebooting after each delete because explorer would crash, task manager would be unresponsive. any idea why that is happening??

Keyboard not working on start menu

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:52 AM PDT

So I've had this weird problem for a couple days now and I have no idea what's happening. On my desktop, which runs windows 10, the keyboard doesn't work on the search in the start menu. It works on things like notepad and google chrome, but won't type when I try to type on the search in the start menu. This also recently happened to my laptop. I've been using that recently because of my desktop being weird, but now my laptop has started doing it as well. I can type perfectly fine on anything (except mail, can't type there either) but anything even related to windows like settings or the start menu doesn't work. Solutions?

    GUI glitches in some programs

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:08 AM PDT

Some of my apps (logi capture is only an example) have these visual glitches (see imgs below). As i move the pointer around, the visual artifacts change; usually as the mouse pointer crosses over a "section" of the GUI it gets fixed (only that section), but then it messes up again. Has anyone had the same issue or knows how to fix it?

I've been having this problem for some months, and I've updated my Nvidia and Intel Graphics drivers regularly, but the problem persisted.

I've tried disabling windows auto-fix resizing (see img) and forcing it to 100% but it didn't work. I don't know if the problem may be related to windows features like resizing, sharpness, etc.

I don't think it is hardware related, because it doesn't happen on every program i have (only few of them. It happens on many VST plugins, if it can help) and i've no problems when running heavy stuff like games or video editing programs, even with Afterburner turned on.

PS: I have a gtx1060 and Intel HD Graphics 630

Thanks in advance for your help :D
