Home/Home Office options for starter 10gb Infrastructure Posted: 02 Oct 2020 05:31 PM PDT Hello! Planning out my infrastructure for a new(er) house that also will be a home office. I'll have 18 Cat6a drops throughout the house. A 24 port 10Gb switch (managed or not) is going to expensive. I'd also like a flavor of PoE for future items. Thus far, this is one of the more affordable options (although it is ~5 years old.) It has 2x10G Copper. I assume I can get 2 10GBASE-T Copper SFP+ Transceivers to work with this switch. As an example : https://www.optcore.net/product/axm765-ntg/ Right now, I only have 3 10Gb capable devices (1 NAS, 2 computers) - everything else will be 1Gb speeds over the Cat6a. Is there another option or methodology I should be looking into? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Does Ubiquiti sell an AC-powered router/mesh point like the Amplifi HD router in the Unifi line? Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:03 PM PDT I run Unifi @ home, it's great, happy with it. I'm setting up a network at another house. I'd love to set up another Unifi network, but I'm dealing with some limitations. There's no Ethernet cabling in the new house, and it'd be cost-prohibitive to run it. There's decent coax in the new house, so I'm planning to set up a mesh system using MoCA. Is there anything like the Amplifi HD router in the Unifi line? Specifically, a "meshable" router or AP with Ethernet backhaul, runs on AC power, has 3+ "extra" Gb Ethernet ports on the device, can sit on a tabletop or shelf, and costs ~$150 or less? The FlexHD is close, but it only has one Gb port. I could use the FlexHD and add a switch to each Flex to get additional ports, but I'm trying to cut down on the # of devices at each location. The Amplifi line will work. I just like the control, coverage, and granularity of the Unifi line more. [link] [comments] |
[UK] - MASSIVE performance differences between HTTP and HTTPS Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:54 AM PDT ***UPDATE - thanks to all who offered suggestions - turns out it was my Sophos Home AV client. As soon as I took that off, the problem went away. Hi all. I'm hoping someone can offer some suggestions on the following problem I've come across. I'll preface this by saying I've worked in IT for longer than I care to remember, and have done more than my fair share of troubleshooting networking issues, so I'm posting here as I'm stumped. So, I've had my Vodafone FTTP Gigafast 900Mbps service (using CityFibre infrastructure) activated this week, and overall I'm very happy, but I've noticed something odd when doing the obligatory speed tests that we all do when we get a new shiny fast connection :-) It seems that performance – especially noticeable with downloads and speed tests – is MUCH slower from sites running HTTPS than it is over HTTP. As more and more sites now switch to HTTPS, this is very noticeable. Running a few of the well-known speed tests (eg www.speedtest.net, www.thinkbroadband.com, etc), my speeds are topping out around 350Mbps, 400Mbps if I'm lucky. Obviously that doesn't seem right. They all run over HTTPS. So then I ran Ookla's command line speed test (https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli) and that consistently maxes out my connection, hitting 850-900Mbps every time. Their Windows 10 app does the same. Thinkbroadband's default speed test runs over HTTPS (https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest), but they also provide one that runs over HTTP (http://labs2.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/) . Again, the HTTP option gives me results in the 800Mbps + range. http://openspeedtest.com/ is another one that's HTTP, with an option to run an HTTPS test (https://openspeedtest.com/?ref=SSL-OST-Results), and again the differences are HUGE – 700Mbps + over HTTP, vs 150Mbps over HTTPS. I also see similar poor performance when downloading large files, eg ISOs from MSDN. I know that HTTPS does carry some overhead, but obviously nowhere near the differences I'm seeing here. Further info –
So, has anyone else had the same issue with HTTPS vs HTTP performance? Can anyone replicate the issue using the different testers I've mentioned? Any suggestions are welcome! [link] [comments] |
Connecting an ASUS RT-AC66U to an AT&T BGW210-700 (have Fiber) Posted: 02 Oct 2020 05:21 PM PDT Hello, I made the post below a couple weeks ago in r/ATT but never got a response. Since then we've moved out of our house (getting floors redone) and I decided to come back early so I've had a little time to try things on my own. I've searched this sub and forums for info, and found similar cases, but can't seem to get things to work. I feel like not only do I not know what I'm doing from a settings standpoint, but I'm also trying to connect things incorrectly. Let me know if any additional information would be helpful. Thanks! ____ Hello, I'm looking to use an ASUS RT-AC66U Router with my family's AT&T Gateway (BGW210-700). We have Internet 1000 and the wired speed is solid (sitting at ~640 download and 934 upload), but the wireless is terrible. We have an older home, so naturally there would be issues, but we're struggling in the same room as the Gateway. After a couple troubleshooting sessions post upgrade we ended up with two repeaters, but they don't help much with the wireless. I did some searching and came across a lot of things regarding bridge/passthrough on the Gateway but was planning on using these steps: https://www.rdforum.org/threads/99320/. However, it looks like the router would need to be right next to the Gateway. I was wondering what additional steps would be needed in order to have the router a floor above the Gateway (in my room). Or if I'd have to try something else. Normally I'd test it out myself and try to work through the issues but, since there are three other people in the house, I'd like to minimize the setup window as much as possible. We have two lines coming out of the gateway which go along the exterior of the house and come back in at my room and our basement. There's also a switch next to the Gateway and in my room. Any thoughts/suggestions/steps, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need advice on how to run an ethernet from my upstairs PC to my downstairs router. Posted: 02 Oct 2020 04:01 PM PDT I use power line adapters currently and while they work, I know my speeds would be way faster with ethernet. Recently purchased a 100 ft cat 6 ethernet cable with the intent of finally having a wired connection in my room. Problem is, my PC is upstairs, while my router is in the basement. Would running it through the vents be viable? I was literally gonna try just opening the vent cover and shoving it in but I've been told my vent doesn't go directly to the basement. Or would it be best to just call someone to come do it? Any help is welcome, thanks. Also, if I do contact a professional, should I call my ISP to do it or an electrician? [link] [comments] |
Not exactly a networking question... Posted: 02 Oct 2020 05:42 PM PDT I've got a 8tb mycloud, drive is starting to get a little noisy. Also have a 10tb Hgst external. Unfortunately the Hitachi is already failing smart with less than 30 hours on it (finally took out out off box to backup all data from the mycloud). Hitachi sat long enough before finally using that it's out of warranty and they won't do anything. So, does anyone have a good finger on the pulse of hdd prices lately? Wouldn't mind building a nasbox, but at the very least I need to start by getting at least 1 good drive to backup my stuff with [link] [comments] |
noob hardware question to get wifi into a shipping container Posted: 02 Oct 2020 05:30 PM PDT hello! i need help selecting hardware to get a wifi signal from a google nest about 100 feet away and tunnel it into my shipping container tiny home. the signal is strong outside the container but zero signal inside. i want to pick up the signal with a device that will output to an ethernet cable. then i can run the cable inside to a router and have wifi in the container. that at least is my hope. is this called a bridge? i don't need a booster, just an antenna, right? this device SEEMS to be close to what I'm looking for: https://www.tp-link.com/us/business-networking/outdoor-radio/cpe210/ is this overkill? it says it goes 7km, i only need 100 feet. thank you in advance r/homenetworking ! TP-link TX-6100 - changing MAC adress Posted: 02 Oct 2020 04:58 PM PDT I want to replace my ISP's ZTE F2866 with this ONU + router becouse it's very unstable, but most likely I will have to do a MAC spoofing to bypass authentication. New update with Comcast issues. Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:54 PM PDT I have had less than 400 Mbps speeds since before I changed to my 1 Gbps tier earlier this year. Since I changed, I have never received the speed I pay for. I have hardwired my computer to the modem directly and checked, nothing over 450 Mbps. I am hardwired when I check the connection every single time. I have numerous t3 and t4 errors on the modem per day. Disconnects were happening more frequently, 50+ times a day but have reduced to 5-10 times a day. The disconnects happen at random times during the day but the speed only every gets to 400 Mbps max. Most times the speed hovers at about 250 Mbps. The modem is fairly new, changed this year to make sure I had the proper equipment for the speed. I have an Arris SB8200. I am using a Netgear Nighthawk AC2600. I have changed all the cables running from those two pieces of equipment to the wall. I have had 3 total techs out. One checked just the cables right outside my house, which he found one frayed cable, changed it, no effect. The second one checked those same cables but also the main poles (they are underground in my area) but found nothing. He changed one connector inside the house and also changed the cable out from the wall to the modem. He said everything looked great on his end. He ordered a line tech to come out and that line tech said he cleaned up some noise from some local businesses but everything looked "squeaky clean" afterwards. So far I still have the same problems minus the high number of disconnects. I am at a lost. The last person I spoke to on the phone didn't have an answer, offered me money to compensate and told me they don't know what's going on. They are charging me money for a broken service and don't know how to fix it! I have had 4 tickets opened with their engineering department, I do not know the outcome of any of those tickets. They don't call me or text me with any info. The "techs" I speak to on the phone are always entry level people who run the same diagnostic solutions, which are completely pointless. I am paying for something i'm not receiving and it's very frustrating. I am considering contacting several agencies, including the BBB and the FCC to find out if they can put some vigor in Comcast's ability to perform their duties. I want to know if anyone here knows anything concerning this problem, maybe something similar happened to them. If someone knows a solution or can help me get to where I need to be, please let me know. I feel frustrated and confused on how Comcast, the people I pay, don't know how or what is wrong with my internet! If any further information is needed, let me know. Thanks for reading through this vent/informational piece. Any information is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Looking to start from scratch SSO, local and NAS storage,??? Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:09 PM PDT I can retiring this month and moving to a new home shortly. I will be disassembling my hodge podge network of pc's, servers, routers/switches and NAS and hopefully creating something desirable in the end. I'm struggling to articulate exactly how to ask for what I want, so I'll just list out what I "think" my wants needs are: I'm pretty happy with the hardware but that's where the fun ends. We prefer windows on our PC's and am running Mint on the Home Assistant workstation. Where I work, the network is set up so that any workstation you log into looks about the same across the local and networked drives. I would like to be able to log into any of the windows (and possibly the linux) machines and have the same directory structure. Example: <My Computer> would be: C:/ system drive H:/ local secondary drive J:/ NAS personal drive of logged in user with no shared access S:/ NAS shared drive pool <Network> All PC's with shared storage would match the credentials of the logged in user ( several users ie:kids will not have the same access as my wife and myself. If this is too vague or convoluted please ask for specifics. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2020 04:08 PM PDT Recently upgraded to the gigabit service from AT&T fiber. Had the technician come and utilize the line in connection with what looks like a quick splice connector. From a novice perspective the pairs look like they are correctly color-coded however I am only getting 100m speeds (50-70Mbps) Ethernet to my x99 PC Over 5G Wi-Fi I am getting an average of 300Mbps Tried a couple different cat 5e cables from the wall jack to the computer with similar speed results. AT&T Gateway model is AC compatible. Passedthru to nighthawk x10 modem http://imgur.com/gallery/jJxMKYD Am I missing something? Wires are straight to each room plugged into the modem. Help power line network problem windows 10 Posted: 02 Oct 2020 04:07 PM PDT My internet suddenly shut off last night at 1am Windows diagnostic says Ethernet doesn't have valid ip address All three bars on the power line adapter are lit The source is plugged into the modem and the light on the modem is green where all other connections are orange when my internet was working my connection was orange as well I had this problem when I first set up my power line network the problem that time was the adapters weren't connecting to each other (the center green bar was not lit) When I unplug the source cable from the modem and into the router I can connect to the router settings but not the internet windows diagnostic says there is no problem and continues to recommend a network reset. When I was connected to the modem I tried an ip reset through command prompt code netsh int ip reset and everything returns ok! Except line 24 of 31 it says resetting , failed access is denied. but theirs no identification of what access is denied nor what it's trying to reset. Update: I did ipconfig /all No primary dns suffix Update again: My brothers pc is not connected to the internet he is also on a power line network we're both using D-Link network adapters but they are different models and for some reason he is running a connection that runs from the modem through a single adapter to a single outlet in his room with two of the same adapters plugged in and connected to different machines For clarification me and my brother are running two power line networks through different outlets with different adapter models one goes upstairs and the other goes downstairs we have been using this setup for months with no problems. The power line Ethernet is not working but wifi connected from my modem to the router does work for some reason [link] [comments] |
New phone line but adsl internet speed dropped Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:28 PM PDT Hi, recently my home phone line got expanded with new rj11 ends inside the apartment. I've noticed that internet speed dropped of 50%. I've inspected the cabling where the modem stands and found this. Could it be that the rj11 end from rj45 is done poorly ? [link] [comments] |
Going out of ADSL filter into standard router Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:35 PM PDT Hi, I feel like this must be a really common question but I can't find any others that have helped me solve this issue! I have a cheap technicolour router that seems to have died and it's giving me extremely slow upload speeds, so I have acquired another router (an ASUS thing). The technicolour router is connected to an ADSL filter via an ADSL cable. The new router only has an RJ45 Ethernet WAN port. Is this a simple connector problem, and can I plug the ADSL port direct into the Ethernet WAN port, or do I need another modem or something in between the filter and the router? Apologies if you get this question asked 100 times per day [link] [comments] |
Getting faster speeds over WiFi than ethernet Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:17 PM PDT I have 1 gig suddenlink internet and my house has cat 5e ethernet cables prewired, but for some reason I can't get over 100 mbps in any room. My google WiFi can get me 250 mbps on most devices in my house, but I want to hardwire a couple of rooms. Does anyone know what might be causing this? [link] [comments] |
Create my own network from a building wide wifi Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:27 PM PDT I have a beach condo that has centralized wifi that was run to each unit. I have to login to a website from each device, and then it's good to go, but that's a pain in the ass with everything. Is there a router that can log on to the building wide wifi with my unique username and password, and then broadcast my own network? I do not have direct access to their router, only to the wifi. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Can my router create a third network only for my VPN? Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:19 PM PDT Hi With 5ghz and 2.4ghz many routers create two visible networks that your phone can connect to. Is it possible to split it once more and create a network where I on my router use openVpn to connect to a Nordvpn server? Or can I on lets say a Asus router set that only the 5ghz networks uses the vpn connection and not the 2.4ghz or wired connection? Or should I just buy the cheapest router and have that as the third network? Thanks for the help and sorry if it's the wrong place to ask [link] [comments] |
86ing Comcast XFi Router, need advice Switch vs wired Router Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:55 PM PDT What I have currently
Planned purchase My home hosts as many as 6 computers, several smartphones, and various other network devices. Mesh is online and services everything but my PC, which is the lone hardwired device. My question is which device is better suited for my needs, a switch, or a wired router? In the future, I may run a hardwired game server as well. [link] [comments] |
Help me move on from my Asus CM-32 AC2600 Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:07 AM PDT Hi Folks, I recently moved to a new location, and whereas my Asus CM-32 AC2600 made the trip with me, it's starting to really tick me off. Basically this is my current setup: Xfinity XB7-T (bridge mode modem) > Asus CM-32 AC2600 (router) Use case is for Gaming, Downloading, Video streaming to devices, and Video Meetings. Asus Gateway connects to the following: -WIRED-
-WiFi-
The coverage space is about 660 Sq Ft, in a condo built in 1970. Networking equipment is located about 15 feet off center of the whole condo. My troubles began first with finding out that if I wanted the speeds and plan from Xfinity I need, I'd have to use their XB7-T, instead of the modem included in the Asus I owned. So, joy: now this hybrid Gateway I purchased can only use the router feature. Not the hugest of deals, I'll just place the XB7-T in bridge mode and use the Asus as the router. This was working ok for a few weeks, then the router started showing problems: it would suddenly drop it's wifi connections for a few seconds before resuming. I'd come back randomly to find services I have made available externally to be blocked or disappear, only to find that my port forwarding settings had been wiped or disappeared from the router's management page, necessitating me setting them back up again. The router suddenly would have trouble sending signal into the bedroom only 200 feet away, and other times it would be fine. I tried resetting the router, and the firmware, with little change in results. I think it might have gotten damaged in the move, or possibly during a power outage it got an electrical spike that fried its brain. And with the way life has been going for everyone, I'm just tired of dealing with it and looking for a replacement. However, though I do work in IT, my networking Kung-fu has always been weak, and I mainly have experience in Corporate environment AP'S and switches, not home routers and gateways. I've investigated routers online from respected outlets and review organizations, but I get mixed results on the ones I think I like as the reviews seem to vary. Mainly I've been looking at the following:
Asus has been okay, but as my current Asus is only about 4 years old, I'm dubious about buying another one of them if it's only going to die before it could reach kindergarten, especially when it looks like their high end models aren't future proofed for both Wireless AX and Gaming throughput (unless I've missed a model somewhere in my research). TP-LINK's sound good in theory, but I hear there's some mandatory monitoring system and mobile app you need to sign up for with TP-LINK that goes through a cloud connection which seems to preclude them from being managed through a computer, and that allegedly TP-LINK doesn't allow for granular QoS modification (full disclosure, I am not sure how much of this is true, it's just what I have seen on forum postings about the units). So, I'm at an impasse. If I'm going to spend upwards of $350 on a router in this economy, I want to know it's going to have longevity as well as meet my needs. If anyone can assist in giving me direction on this purchase, please let me know in the comments. Thank you in advance for your assistance! EDIT: thanks to everyone who downvoted this post for no reason. Suuuuuuuper helpful. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:23 PM PDT My ethernet network adapter in Device Manager shows as: "Intel (R) Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V." The "(2)" does not belong there and suggests a problem, I want to fix it. Inside the network settings and Network & Sharing Center in Control Panel, my network's name was always "Network 2." I was able to resolve the "Network 2" issue and make it say just "Network" in my settings by using Windows 10's network reset option, which reset the drivers and settings. This did not remove the "(2)" from my ethernet adapter. This is frustrating to me, since I just like everything on my system to be clean and functioning and this "(2)" suggests something is broken. This issue persists no matter what I do, from running reset commands in CMD to just now reinstalling the Intel ethernet driver. My ethernet connection continues to show as "Intel (R) Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V." I want to delete this rogue "first" ethernet adapter so that my ethernet connection I219-V displays without a "(2)" in the name. Is there something I can delete in my System32 drivers folder, or a registry key I can tweak? I'm familiar with the risks of deleting anything in System32 and regularly delete old driver entries there. I don't want to rename the ethernet adapter. I want to delete the first entry ethernet adapter somehow that is causing the "(2)" to appear. Just to reiterate, I tried to reinstall the ethernet driver and even reset it back to all Microsoft defaults. I checked hidden devices and there is no other ethernet adapter in Device Manager. This is quite the mystery. [link] [comments] |
Is it beneficial to mix Cloudflare and Google DNS? Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:07 PM PDT I want to use 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 to get the best of both worlds. I assume my requests will switch to whichever DNS is faster at a given time. Is this a good way to always keep my internet snappy, rather than depending on only Google or Cloudflare? Cloudflare just had a massive outage not long ago. [link] [comments] |
Access point periodically dropping Ethernet connection to main router Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:21 PM PDT My network is cable modem —> main router ——> wired access point connected to lan port on AP Static ip set up on access point . DHCP turned off DHCP on main router has the AP ip reserved I have about 5 wifi devices connected to the AP and they will all periodically drop internet connection at the same time Internet connection still works fine when connected to the main router . Something is going on with the wired connection between AP and main router . Sometimes simply switching the LAN port that the Ethernet cable is plugged into on the AP is enough to solve the problem. Other times I need to do a hard reset on the AP and main router. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Looking to hire someone to run cable, need help with terminology so I know what to ask for. Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:49 PM PDT I'm older and overweight so crawling in the attic is not my thing. Going to look at hiring. I'm going to upgrade to Fios Gigabit internet. ONT will be in garage. I want a connection from the ONT to my office upstairs where I'll have a wireless router. Then from my office I want to cable runs to wall plates downstairs. So I see people talking about cable drops. Do I say that I need 3 drops since it's 3 cables? What else should I ask for when looking at hiring? [link] [comments] |
