This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Insanely grateful to where i’ve gotten in the past 3 months

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:30 AM PDT

So just 3 months ago, I gave my dad the idea of selling my gaming laptop and perhaps building myself a computer to which he quickly rejected, and after a good week of talking he said yes but that he wanted to pay for it, and not sell the laptop because I may need it for college. I built my first PC finding local deals: Offerup, Facebook marketplace, craigslist, and built a $700 PC in under $500 (Ryzen 5 3600, 1650 Super, 32GB RAM, blah blah). My dad told me to sell it to potentially make some money and i did, and built another one, sold it and yet another one, and now i'm around in my area with plenty of people paying me to help them build their PC's which has honestly been the most fun thing i've done in my life. I'm so grateful for what my dad blessed me with and all the things he's done for me. PC building has honestly just changed my life, it's made me feel like i'm actually doing something with my life.

I went from an xbox one to building my own pc and the difference is huge.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:17 PM PDT

When my friends started switching to pc from xbox I did too and the difference is huge!! Like I did not even know some games can load in less than 5 seconds. I have a 970 evo plus ssd and it is so cool to not wait for games to load at all. I can't imagine playing console anymore. I am going to soon get a 240hz monitor since my 60hz is not enough anymore and can't wait for that too.

GoGuardian installed itself on my PC

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:47 AM PDT

Alright. I set up my school profile in Chrome on my Windows 10 PC (personal, not affiliated with the school at all), and when finishing a notification popped up (from Windows) that said it was installed as a background app and would run even when Chrome is closed- great. How do I get rid of it? It's not in the background apps list, program manager, app list, or task manager.

Should I upgrade power supply first?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:50 PM PDT

So I've wanted a pc since I was young and I since I don't have a job I bought an old dell prebuilt to upgrade.

My CPU is a i3-2120 so I wasn't planning on upgrading it yet since it isn't too bad.

The power supply is a 300watt generic one, I was wondering if instead of buying a low profile gpu first I should buy a new psu?

    X570 Tomahawk vs b550 strip e gaming

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 10:07 AM PDT

Hi I could do with some help with my new motherboard. my motherboard needs; internal usb c, bluetooth, good memory support to support Corsair dominator cl18 3600mhz Ram and good vrm because I want to get the best single core performance out of the processor. I don't plan on running any pci 4.0 drives and if I do it will just be 1 for my OS. My build is purely for gaming (just csgo).

im stuck between the X570 tomahawk and the b550 strix e gaming. Both have everything I want but X570 will allow me to get more pci 4.0 drives that I'll probably never use. but just in case would the £35 saving be worth it for the b550

I tried SEVEN headsets and they're ALL BAD HELP!!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:24 PM PDT

I don't know what the hell the problem is. This computer is brand new and yet I've had mic issues on it and the previous one.

I bought all kinds of headsets ranging from $50-$140 and none of their mics work well. I always sound so low and I keep cutting off if I'm not screaming into it.

I currently have the Hyperx cloud 2 and I have the same problem. I adjusted all kinds of settings, installed drivers, programs etc. Nothing worked except that I now have a new problem. Everytime I use my mic to test or something, it ruins the output of the headphones, goes really low until I unplug and replug them in and choose them as default.

Why the fuck are headphones not just plug and play man. This is so infuriating.

    PC Upgrade for gaming

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    Hi there,

my current PC is showing its age and my GF is all hyped for Cyberpunk 2077 and so we want to upgrade it to keep up with current games :-)

    My current setup is:

Case: Fractal Design. (Don't know the exact model but its pretty old)

Mainboard: MSI B250M PRO-VDH Intel B250 So.1151 Dual Channel DDR mATX Retail

Power supply: be quiet! Pure Power BQT L8-CM-530W

CPU: Intel Core i5-7400 CPU 3.00GHZ

CPU cooler: Arctic Freezer i32 CPU Fan

RAM: 16GB (2x 8192MB) Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4-2400 DIMM CL16-16-16 Dual Kit

    Graphics: Radeon RX 480 Graphics

SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB + some old HDs for backups etc.

Requirements: We dont want to spend hundreds of €€€ for a cutting edge super-pc but want a system that is on par with current requirements for AAA gaming. The system requirements for Cyberpunk can be found here: https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/cyberpunk-2077/13169

Budget: I would like to stay below 600€ for the upgrade.

My plan: So my plan is that we keep the case, Mainboard and RAM and upgrade the CPU and maybe graphics card. If I want to keep the CPU we need a CPU with a 1151 socket.

new CPU: I did some research with cpubenchmark (not sure how reliable the page is though...) and found that an i5-9600kf 3,70GHz would propably be a huge upgrade and won't break the bank with a cost of roughly 200€ (double the benchmark points compared to the current one). I can propably even keep the current CPU Fan.

Link to the benchmark test I made: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-7400-vs-Intel-i5-3570K-vs-Intel-i7-4790K-vs-Intel-i5-9600KF/2929vs828vs2275vs3443

new graphics card: As far as I see it it is not THAT bad but maybe you have a recommendation for an upgrade for me?

I appreciate all the help/feedback I can get :-) Thanks for taking the time to reply!

When it comes to budget friendly (around 500USD) is building more cost efficient than buying a prebuilt?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:26 PM PDT

I'm looking at buying/building a desktop that suits my gaming needs (very light stuff like League of Legends, WoW, Overwatch ) and I noticed there are quite a bit of prebuilt computers around 500 usd and seem like good deals. Anyone have any experience with this?

    Edit:

These are the prebuilds I'm looking at:

    Need a new CPU

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I upgraded the graphics card and power supply for a pre-built pc my dad bought me, but the CPU is bottlenecking in games. I'm looking for a CPU that is compatible with my motherboard, and can run upcoming AAA titles at 60 fps, 1920 x 1080.

    CPU: AMD A10-9700 RADEON R7, 10 COMPUTE CORES 4C+6G
    Motherboard model: Aspire TC-281
    BIOS Name: R01-A2
    PSU: Insignia 520w
GFX: Zotac gtx 1060 6gb mini
    RAM: 1 x 8gb 2400Mhz ddr4

I'm mainly concerned about the motherboard + bios not supporting certain CPUs, and if I have enough power to support everything under load.

Building Pc for the first time

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I am going to build a PC for the first time after October 8. So I wanted to know if all the parts I picked are compatible and will work together well. I plane to get cheaper fans and maybe a case because I also have to buy the Windows operating system because I only have a mac laptop. An I fix it kit and a monitor. I am going to buy most of this stuff on newegg. I have like 3,000 dollars to spend on this, but I only plane to spend around 1,800 on the pc once my check clears on October 8. I wanted to know If anyone has suggestions for fans and a pc case.

I broke a PCIe slot but i was able complete my first build. Thank you guys.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:13 PM PDT

I broke a PCIe slot then I had to cut all tiny pins to avoid short circuit and went on with only one PCIe on board. Thank you guys for the knowledge, advices and inspiration. I appreciate you all.

Lesson learned: 1-Avoid interruption when building. Especially when connecting cables. You need to be 100% focused. 2- never tie screws too hard. Sometimes you need to unscrew. 3- Connect your cables before you insert psu inside the case. 4- when assembling an AIO COOLER, make sure the pump is not hitting mobo. It's damn heavy. 5- To avoid loosing your 2nd M.2 NVME tiny screws, screw it loosely on mobo for future use.

First time building a PC: Is this already okay for a $1300 budget?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:50 PM PDT

Hey, everyone. I am a sophomore who lives in Asia, so there might be pricing differences (or none), and my knowledge about PC building is still superficial. I am just a casual gamer, looking for a build that works for productivity. I can all get these from a certain store since if I buy the parts one by one and build them on my own it will cost me more. Is this already good? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

Last build I got offered, and which I think is the most okay ($1385):

PROCESSOR: RYZEN 5 3600X MOTHERBOARD: MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 2060 SUPER WINDFORCE OC 8GB D6 RAM: DELTA TFORCE WHITE DDR4 3600MHZ 16GB(2X8GB) SSD: WD BLUE 250GB M2 HDD: WD BLUE 1TB HDD CHASSIS: NZXT H510 WHITE FANS: ID COOLING DF12025 ARGB TRIO PSU: SEASONIC FOCUS GX 650W 80+ GOLD AIO: ID COOLING AURA FLOW CUSTOM: BLACK SLEEVES - Anything I have overlooked on this one?

    Other builds:

    ($1360)

RYZEN 5 3600X MSI MAG B550M BAZOOKA GIGABYTE RTX 2060 SUPER WINDFORCE OC 8GB D6 DELTA TFORCE WHITE DDR4 3600MHZ 16GB(2X8GB) WD BLUE 250GB M2 WD BLUE 1TB HDD ID COOLING DF12025 ARGB TRIO NZXT H510 WHITE SEASONIC FOCUS GX 650W 80+ GOLD ID COOLING AURA FLOW BLACK SLEEVES - Pretty much the same with the first one, the mobo is the only difference.

    ($1370)

PROCESSOR: AMD RYZEN 5 3600X MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury RGB 8gb x 2 3200mhz BLK PSU: Deepcool DQ750M 750watts 80+ Gold Fully Modular (I can still change this to a more reliable PSU) GPU: GIGABYTE AORUS RTX2060 SUPER 8GB GDDR6 256BIT SSD: Kingston A2000 250gb M.2 NVME SSD HDD: Western Digital BLUE 3.5" 1TB HDD PC CASE: Aorus C300 Mid-Tower Case w/ Tempered Glass - Thinking of switching to a different chassis (NZXT H510), a more reliable PSU, and adding a cooling system (fans and AIO), which prolly would add more to the cost if I end up picking this.

More concerns: Should I just wait a few more weeks/months for lower prices/better deals? Or is it already ideal to get now since the parts might go scarce?

Thank you, everyone! Have a good weekend ahead.

Do I have to screw all standoffs of a matx mobo in a atx case?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:40 PM PDT

Basically title. my mobo has 7 standoffs, but due to it being matx while the case I have is atx I'm having difficulty screwing them all in.

As in, 5 of the standoffs align perfectly with my case, but 2 of them does not. my case has 1 additional standoff only and I couldn't screw it in anyway

so I'm now thinking to just continue the build with 5 standoffs screwed only. is that ok?

As for the places: 3 at top, 1 mid right, 1 mid left. then the 2 standoffs that I couldn't place in are bottom mid and bottom left. I tried to place the case vertically to see if the mobo moves but it didn't. I'm still not too sure if I should continue though.

Are power supplies going to go down in price ever ??

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Old psu I have now has a bad fan and keeps rattling and idk how much longer this thing has to live, and I tried contacting rosewill ( the power supply is a capstone 550m) but no response. I'm looking at new options but they are all almost always above $100 for the decent ones. I just don't want my pc blowing up :(

UPS [uninterrupted power supply] for PCs, question.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 09:34 AM PDT

    Hello,

So, I live in an area that has power outages every now and then [approx 3-5 times a month]. This is due to massive construction plans for the entire city and isnt likely to go away within the next 1 or 2 years.

I was wondering if any body had any experience with UPS [uninterrupted power supply] devices. Anything that can power a single PC for up to 5 to 15 mins. Anybody has personal experience with such devices or info they could share would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks for reading!

    How old is your case?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:28 PM PDT

I've been using a Fractal Design Mini since 2012. Removing the riveted drive cages to accomodate long GPUs was a small pain but otherwise the case has been great.
