    2 Display office set-up

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:53 PM PDT

First of all, background: I'm a mathematician and have some coding experience but I'm NOT a computer scientist, and I was raised on Mac architecture (dad was an artist) so I'd generally prefer the simplest way to do this, if possible.

In my office I have a crummy tiny samsung I got on sale when I was in grad school and a lovely larger samsung I got a few weeks ago. I have my GPU connected to both monitors, and know how to change which one is the main monitor and which one is the secondary monitor.

Now, I don't want to mirror my monitors, as I will, often, be using them for different things. That being said, at times I will solely be using the larger monitor (heretofore called TV), for example, when playing video games on the couch, and other times will be using the TV to watch netflix or cable TV (not via windows, via the TV's app system), while working on the small monitor.

The problem, I'm sure you know, is that if ---

Case 1: I mirror, I won't be able to use them separately, as is convenient when I'm working on research, or when streaming.

Case 2: I make the TV my main monitor, at which point I will find an annoyance when using only the small monitor, and the TV is on Netflix or Cable, having to switch my input just long enough to move windows over to the other monitor, occasionally having to do so again later in the project as I realize I need another program or something that "spawns" on the main monitor side

Case 3: I make the small monitor the main monitor, at which point pretty much any time I'm playing steam with buddies sitting on the couch I'll have to jump up to look at the smaller monitor often throughout the session.

Now, naturally case 3 seems like the least annoying, and will likely be my choice, given no other option. That being said, is there a convenient way to quick switch main monitors, or to set it so that when one monitor is off or not actively engaged with the HDMI input that it cedes main monitor status to the other?

I understand that this is the epitome of first world problems, as I can just flip over, switch which is the main monitor, but if there's any way to do this conveniently, that'd be awesome.

Also I don't know if it is helpful to know, but realize it might be, but the GPU is an older NVIDIA

Bunch of files moved to a different account when I didn’t want them to.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 09:10 PM PDT

I made a new account for school which I want to be seperate from my gaming account but a lot of my files such as game launchers went over to the other account and I can't get them back.

I want to get them back over to the correct account and not have any other apps on the school one except allowed ones.

I tried the work account feature but it didn't work.

    Installation issues.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 07:13 PM PDT

So I've recently bought windows 10(disk). I bought this for a new pc build however it's been a few years since I've built a pc. I was not aware that pc towers do not come with an optical drive anymore. So my new pc does not have an optical drive and I bought the disk installation. What are my options here? I'm completely dumb founded that there is no disk drive in this tower. This is completely f***ing stupid imo. Has any anyone else had this problem? What are the best solutions to this? Any advice is greatly appreciated Thanks.

    Fresh install = internet problems

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:51 PM PDT

So I did a fresh install of windows 10 pro yesterday. Didn't have time to do anything afterwards. Now I can't get any internet connection. It's hardwired and it says connected to network but I can't use anything on the internet. I can't connect to wifi because it won't allow me to type in anything in any windows boxes. Virtual keyboard won't work either. What should I do here? I can't even update drivers because it's acting like I have no connection

    BSOD Windows 10

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:52 PM PDT

Hello everyone, my pc just bluescreened with error "whea_uncorrectable_error".

I tried restarting many times but nothing, black screen after loading.

Thankfully safe mode seems to be working, even if it shows graphical glitches and green bands on the screen, and all files seem to be working properly.

My graphics card is a AMD Radeon R9 370, cpu is intel core i7-5820k and ram is 16gb.

Haven't had any problem like this in the past, could someone help?

    Thanks in advance.

    Certain keys do odd functions???

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:17 PM PDT

I have a Windows 10 Lenovo gaming laptop. Before, when I used to press Fn and left or right arrow, I could turn volume up or down. Now nothing happens.

Also, at least F1, F2, F3, and F12 all cause my laptop to go to sleeping mode. Before this of course did not happen. This all started today.

Have I accidentally turned on some setting? Or what could be the reason?

Edit: now pressing arrows without Fn let's me change volume, and with Fn pressed it won't. So is the Fn key broken?

Edit 2: Solved via BIOS menu. Hotkey mode was set to disabled. What I do not know, is what made that change. Windows itself or something else?

Japanese font looks stretched on Windows 10

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 12:32 PM PDT

Japanese font on Windows 10 looks stretched..?

I have recently just installed the Japanese Microsoft IME on my computer, and it worked fine for an hour or two. I left my computer to see that it put itself into sleep mode, and when I turned it back on, the font looked stretched. Also, the input mode keeps setting itself on Half width Alphanumeric instead of Hiragana. I have tried the ctrl+caps and F6 shortcut to fix this as well, and it doesn't work. But I am more concerned about the font. Any help would be great! This is how it currently looks | and this is somewhat how it used to look

Does Windows require the HyperV packages to run on a vm?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 07:45 AM PDT

I used WinToolKit to make my Windows iso lighter. Then, I make the iso and run it through virtualbox. I then got a black screen with the cursor, and the loading symbol would appear every time I moved the cursor. But when I used an untampered Windows 10 iso, it installs fine. If I were to get a flash drive and burn the iso, and dual boot, would I be able to successfully install the light Windows?

BUG: Outlook sync failure with Gmail (and a bonus S/Mime challenge)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 11:15 AM PDT

My new employer is on G Suite.

The IT guy is a "for hire" admin that my CEO doesn't want me to pay to resolve this issue.

CEO is a Mac guy and solves every problem by saying, "Just use the Mac."

The Issue: I'm required to use both Gmail (backend) and S/Mime certs. S/Mime certs for Gmail can only be added by the G Suite admin, who I can't call.

Possible solution: I'll just use Outlook on both my PC and my iPhone and ensure the same cert is on both devices.

    BUG!

Except the Outlook stops syncing with the Gmail. No idea why but I'm not the first person that has endured this humiliation.

I can't use Gmail on my PC because I won't be able to decrypt inbound emails.

I can't use Outlook on my iPhone or PC because the sync won't start no matter what I do (and yes, I've played around with the IMAP settings.)

I can get both the sync and the cert to work on Thunderbird for PC but there's no matching iPhone client.

Apple has a working iOS client "Mail" on the iPhone but there's not a Mac mail client for Windows.

ANY ADVICE AT ALL? (Please, please, please don't say "...just use a Mac!")

As someone who uses creative software on Windows 10, how do you open a media cache drive and shared storage drive on an external HDD?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 10:45 AM PDT

I'm looking to run my creative software a bit smoother. Adobe recommends having one drive for OS/applications and one drive(external drive) for shared storage and media cache. Do I need to redirect the files? Do I just need to open a folder on my external HDD?
