Constant ICMP Flood attacks on cable modem

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:56 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently moved to a new apartment, which unfortunately meant that I'm limited to Xfinity/Comcast only for internet service. Had I known that I would be limited to Xfinity only I may have not moved here, but I digress.

My modem is a Netgear modem/Wi-fi router combo C6300v2 https://www.netgear.com/support/product/C6300v2.aspx (firmware V1.03.06) that I purchased, and after I had the service connected it mostly seemed to work well.

However, over time I started noticing wifi disconnects on 2 Android phones and my PC (have to have my PC on Wifi due to coax jack placement issues). The disconnect only lasts for a second or two, and is hard to notice unless I try to go to a website or something during the disconnect. The disconnects happen when I'm in the same room as the router, and also happen on either the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks.

While attempting to troubleshoot this I found a large number of ICMP flood attacks in the logs:

    Description Count Last Occurrence Target Source [DoS attack] ICMP Flood from 31.192.111.233 1 Wednesday, 28 Oct 2020 02:56:47 98.213.100.86 31.192.111.233 [DoS attack] ICMP Flood from 169.51.141.146 1 Wednesday, 28 Oct 2020 02:24:35 98.213.100.86 169.51.141.146 [DoS attack] ICMP Flood from 74.115.53.53 1 Wednesday, 28 Oct 2020 02:22:12 98.213.100.86 74.115.53.53 [DoS attack] ICMP Flood from 128.9.63.139 1 Wednesday, 28 Oct 2020 02:20:05 98.213.100.86 128.9.63.139 [DoS attack] ICMP Flood from 172.104.45.135 1 Wednesday, 28 Oct 2020 01:38:41 98.213.100.86 172.104.45.135

The IP addresses don't seem to repeat, and they are from all over the world.

I have ping respond disabled, and the router's DoS protection is enabled: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Loh62a_0DYEkF4D19aHGrUaauzZovwO-/view?usp=sharing

Am I alone in getting these sort of attacks? Is there any way to determine if they are false positives?

    Thank you!

Need advice on how to monitor network traffic

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 08:44 PM PDT

I'm looking for a router/device that can measure traffic data. Looking for how much data a device has downloaded and and what websites it has visited.

I had a Netgear Nighthawk R7800 that could do the above with custom firmware (ddwrt with YAMon), but it would knock all wired connections offline after a week of use. Rebooted and would do the same thing. Could not find out why this was happening and put it on the side and used old router for now.

Recently, about to go over data cap for ISP and not sure why.

Was wondering what would be the best option:

    A) Ubiquiti Dream Machine - New and has DPI functionality, but expensive ($300) and heard firmware is buggy and things are still in beta

    B) Synology RT2600AC - Can get a used one on Amazon for about $140 and has an app for traffic monitor, but is old hardware and prolly nearing its end of life cycle

    C) Ubiquiti USG + switch + AP - Prolly be more expensive than UDM and have to set it up

    D) Other options?

Need help setting up effective VPN for apple tv

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 08:40 PM PDT

I set up ExpressVPN for my German aunt so that she could watch some channels that are only available online in Germany. It works well on her laptop and phone. However, I found that the ExpressVPN implementation for the AppleTV was pretty bad.

Now, I am not going to always be around to help her with this, so I wanted to get something simple and easy to use set up.

The network set up is like this: https://ibb.co/FJRHwyV two ISP provided ONTs -> CISCO load balancing router -> POE network Switch -> Multiple APs -> AppleTV

What I'm considering, if its possible is as follows: https://ibb.co/2yXtSQK two ISP provided ONTs -> CISCO load balancing router -> POE network Switch -> Multiple APs -> DD-WRT Router as a Wi-Fi repeater with VPN -> AppleTV

The basic idea is that the DD-WRT router works as a Wi-Fi repeater with the VPN logged in on it. My aunt then can very easily change the Wi-Fi connection on the AppleTV itself when she wants to use the VPN. I cant run network cable to the router unfortunately ,as the AppleTV is too far from the networking cabinet, and all the cable runs that were built into the walls have already been populated by APs.

Is this possible? I wanted to know for sure before I go out and buy a custom firmware/VPN capable router/Wi-Fi repeater.

    tp-link Archer AX3200 unboxing

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:45 PM PDT

Some of us have been discussing this apparently brand new router in some threads here. For example https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/jajpyu/is_costco_selling_a_router_that_doesnt_exist

It's been hard to find any information online. I took a chance on it, and mine just arrived. I expect to have more info in a few days after I get it set up and use it for a while.

For now here are some pictures of the box and the device.

    Garage Wifi

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Hey y'all I always have a big crowd over for games and I've built the ultimate man cave in my garage but I've been plagued with lagging streams on my projector particularly during live sporting events during evening hours and occasionally Youtube. It will buffer or disconnect even if all the other devices are not using WiFi. I have Spectrum 12MB internet, Spectrum router/modem using WiFi to reach a Firestick hooked into an Optoma projector. I have a Belkin WiFi extender plugged in. The signal goes through one wall/staircase and the garage door. I will be upgrading to 100 MB soon but what other steps can I take to insure smooth streaming? I will link an image to help showcase my dilemma, garage is roughly 25 yards from the router. I've tried switching between 2.4 & 5 with no improvement. Should I run a cable, make an access point or upgrade my router? Could the Firestick be the problem? Diagram

Which Gateway is best for 600Mb Down/20Mb Up?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:58 PM PDT

I have xfinity and I'm having a hard time trying to find a Gateway only device that has DOCSIS 3.0 and 32x8 that isn't Puma 6, are there ay that are? Do I even need 32x8 in order to get the most of my 600/20? Can I get some other DOCSIS 3.0 channel split? In thinking of spending no more than 200.00 USD.

Lastly, does maker mean anything re: Gateway operation or should I keep an eye out for a certain company like Arris or Netgear?

    Complicated Home Network

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 07:29 PM PDT

I have a family of four, with lots of tech toys and gadgets. We have fiberoptic internet provided by our HOA and I get 90 megs up and down out of the back of the router (netgear nighthawk x6). Our WiFi on the other hand, sucks a lot of the time. The coverage is good for our 1800 sq. ft. home, reception-wise / number of bars, so to speak. But the speeds really suck some times and completely go out other times. I know we have heavy demand, my boys both game and my wife and I are frequently streaming a show or sometimes even two while they both game. I use 3 (really old) power line modulators and a range extender, but I think the range extender has been causing some issues, so I've unplugged it. I've been thinking about getting a mesh system, but my younger sons think our network issues are caused by ddos attacks from gaming. Would ddos attacks crash our whole system or just his IP? If that is what's happening, would it make more sense to get the kids their own WiFi instead of mesh to separate from attacks? We also have 3 unused but connected Ethernet jacks and an unused TP link switch. Trying to plan out a better setup. TIA for the help.

No internet after Cat6A patch panel; issue with Cat5e cables?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 07:03 PM PDT

Hello! I'm very much a novice with home networking, so please bear with me.

We purchased a home with pieces of the previous owner's home network in place, namely, a patch panel and Cat6A cables going throughout the house, and I'm trying to get the whole system back to working order.

    Here's my current setup:

    1. CenturyLink Fiber Gigabit internet -->
    2. modem -- (Cat5e cable) -->
    3. router -- (Cat5e cable) -->
    4. wall plate -- (Cat6A cable) -->
    5. Cat6A patch panel -- (Cat5e cable) -->
    6. TP-Link 8 port gigabit switch -- (Cat5e cable) -->
    7. BACK TO the aforementioned patch panel in #5 -- (Cat6A cable through the house) -->
    8. wall plate in upstairs office -- (Cat5e cable) -->
    9. laptop computer.

    Issue:
My laptop computer acknowledges a connection to a network, but there's no internet.

    Observations:

    1. I connected the laptop directly to the router via a Cat5e cable, and I was able to connect to the internet.
    2. I connected the laptop at step 5, directly into the patch panel, and I had the same issue with acknowledging connection to a network, but no internet.

    Questions:

    1. Was it a mistake to use Cat5e cables rather than Cat6A throughout? I didn't realize the existing cables between the wall plates and the patch panel were Cat6A, so I mistakenly ordered Cat5e to hook up the remaining components. Could that be a cause for no internet?
    2. Are there any other glaring errors in the setup I described?
    3. Any other details I can provide?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

    Trouble with new moCA setup

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:57 PM PDT

    Hi,

I recently installed a couple of Actiontec MoCA adapters (ECB6250) to help with speeds in my downstairs, which is far away from my router upstairs. It took me a while to even set it up, since the first time I tried to do it I installed it at a splitter at the very end of the coax cable, and for whatever reason it just would not work when I did that. When I installed it and the splitter right next to the coax outlet it started working fine.

I recently installed a new mesh system and until I disconnected the MoCA adapter completely from the splitter the internet would not work, despite resetting the modem multiple times. Only started working after I disconnected the adapter. Then I reconnected it and the internet didn't go off. But now my internet drops intermittently. Not for long, only for about a minute or so, but it's frustrating because it works so well otherwise. It does this about 3-4 times a day.

Anyone have an idea of why this is happening and how I can fix it?

    Syslog Server and UniFi products

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 11:26 AM PDT

    Hello guys and girls.

I am currently new to home networking and I am going step by step by trying new things and creating a mini lab.

Currently I have a USG with some VLANS (4). I am using my USG as my main firewall and I found it a little weird that the UniFi Controller doesn't have a clean UI for traffic that is allowed and for traffic that gets denied (I know that I can SSH and read the logs), something like an Analyzer.

I am thinking to build a syslog server to receive logs just to see what is getting denied and what is allowed, do anyone else tried that? What platform / software did you use? Is it possible to build that on a RPi3 B+ that I have around?

Kind regards and thanks for your time.

Any MOTOROLA MG7540 cable modems users? Got some questions

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:44 PM PDT

I have the manual, but it doesn't go into the ADVANCED settings you can change.

    1) Can you change the LAN IP. (its 1928.168.0.1)

    2) DHCP Server, can you specify the Start and stop range?

    3) Reserve DHCP IP addresses?

    4) Any quirks to it? (have to reboot monthly, has other weird issues)

I had the old SBG6580, but it died so looking to replace it.

I am an xfinity customer and looking to keep $$$ down under $150 and NOT get cable modem with a Intel Puma chipset which disqualifies many ARRIS cable modems.

Not looking to go refurb, I have read countless horror stories of people buying refurbs from amazon .

    Thanks

    Router Recommendations - Xfinity Compatible

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:41 PM PDT

Hi friends! Like others, I'm sick of renting equipment. Seeking some advice on an xfinity compatible router (or any other combination of devices) I feel like a complete dingus asking this because I work in IT, but the options are honestly overwhelming so I'd like to see if you've discovered something I haven't! My home is a 1300 sq ft 3 story townhouse condo with the top floor being the actual living space. however, I do have a door sensor on the bottom floor for my garage door that requires wifi connection. My second floor doesn't even really count as a second floor because it's just my front door and entrance. I only have my door sensors/security system, one desktop, two smart tvs(not powered at once, i live alone)an echo dot and one smart plug connected to my network. I have a plan for up to 100 mbps but hoping to increase that as that was temporary until i stacked my dollas. I'm not trying to go toooo crazy because I really only use one device at once (besides the alexa, smart plug, and security system) but do need good service as I work from home. I know others have asked about xfinity routers, but I'm curious if there's an option that's more affordable for me that I haven't come across since my home is majorly open floor.

    What are your thoughts?

Wireless AND wired devices not reconnecting until after a modem reboot.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:33 PM PDT

    Hello

I have a very peculiar problem, when I leave something off overnight say my nintendo switch or IPTV. I will wake up the next day and try to watch TV or log into the Nintendo Eshop. However the connection will not work unless I reboot the mode. Now my PC which is wired and constantly on does not have this issue.

The switch says it's unable to get an IP address, the IPTV just says it cannot connect to the TV services. It's so damn weird.

TP-Link Smart Switch VLAN Interface Not Routing to Internet

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:24 PM PDT

I have a TP-Link L2/L3 smart switch and have created a user VLAN to try and seperate guest traffic from management. For some reason even with the VLAN created and the VLAN interface made, the traffic from that VLAN doesn't route to the internet.

I have a static route rule on the switch for 0.0.0.0 to go to the switch default gateway, and even added a rule for that VLAN subnet to route to that default gateway too, and no luck. Any help with this would be awesome.

    Access points for parking lot

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 10:50 AM PDT

Hello all, I work for a nature preserve and have been tasked with looking into wireless access points to see if we can get WiFi down in our parking lot. Below I've listed what I think are the relevant details, but if you need any more information from me I am happy to provide it.

    • We currently have internet in our office building, but the office is about 200-350 feet away from the parking lot (depending on which end of the lot you are in).

    • We were thinking of getting an outdoor access point so that we can put it as close as possible to the lot (connected with a buried power/ethernet cable) and so that the signal does not have to go through the walls. Is this necessary/recommended?

    • Our parking lot has a capacity of ~30 cars (and cars often park along the street when the lot is full, especially since COVID hit), however as this is the start of a 5 mile trail, we will never have that many people trying to access the WiFi at once (unless we have a group hike scheduled, in which case we can just warn them ahead of time).

    • We do not need to support a bunch of people streaming or playing games or things like that -- we mostly need it so people can call an uber (there is 0 cell service in the area), check the map, and so staff can check emails and things on their phones from the lot.

    • There are some trees between the office and the parking lot, so line of sight isn't perfect. I can see the lot and most of the cars in it from the office, but there is a thin strip of forest between the office and the parking lot.

    • Price is a secondary concern, however it will certainly be considered. We likely don't want to spend $10,000 on an access point, but we would rather have something that is reliable and has a good range than save a few bucks.

After a quick look through Amazon I have come across a few that seem decent, but I was hoping that the community here might have better input than the Amazon reviews. I guess my main questions are what access point should we get, and do we need to buy multiple? Here is the access point I found on Amazon that seems to be reasonable. The reviews seem alright and some people have said they get great service over 200 yards away, which is double the distance we would need.

    Any thoughts?

    Would Love Some Advice!

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:11 PM PDT

    Hello all!

When it comes to streaming content or surfing the web, internet in my house is great. My complaints arise when it comes to gaming: I experience random, severe lag spikes when playing on my Xbox One. Speed tests ran on my Xbox read similar results to tests ran on laptops/phones/tablets, which leads me to believe the lag spikes are a result of congestion on my home network (two smart TV's, three phones, two tablets, three laptops, and a Sonos sound system - all of which are usually being used concurrently).

Xfinity/Comcast is my ISP, and I rent one of their XB6 (Technicolor CGM4140COM) xFi gateways. This gateway also handles cable and voice - not sure if this can add to network congestion. My Xbox is wired directly to the gateway, as is the main node of a Google Mesh system. I am paying for a mid-tier internet package, which says it provides up to 500 Mbps of bandwidth.

    TLDR;

I have a high-traffic home network ran on an Xfinity gateway and Google Mesh system. I am looking for any advice to improve my network and reduce the lag spikes I am experiencing on my (hardwired) Xbox.

    My Question(s):

Is a gaming modem/router/gateway my solution? Since I have a mesh system, can I get by with just a gaming modem and rely on the mesh for wifi? Thank you in advance!

    Tracing wires for sound system

ive seen that you can splice wires...please talk me out of it!

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 05:42 PM PDT

So my end game is to have my computer and raspi on the same network, wired, so the Pi can act as my steamlink. Pi is built and has been tested over WiFi and it WORKS but still there is some lag. It appears as if my house is wire with RG6/Cat5e to every major room BUT all of those wires go out of the house to the Qwest (defunct company) box in my back yard. I only need the outlet by my PC to go to my TV in the other corner of the basement. I know I can but SHOULD i splice those cables or should I just future proof and RJ45 all of them and prepare for the purchase of a switch?

    NAS advice

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 05:30 PM PDT

This is my first time here, so please be nice!

I've looked on the web and YouTube and found this to be quite a dry topic in terms of information so I thought I'd turn to Reddit.

I am looking to setup my own home network with a NAS so that I can primarily backup my files from my family's Mac's, and use it as a fileserver for offsetting large amounts of data from my laptops and other devices. While this makes a choice of NAS easy, there are a couple of edge cases that I will need to cover which makes my options slightly more difficult:

I have a very high quality raw 4K video that is approximately 70-80GB in size. I plan to stream this via Plex directly onto my Sony OLED TV. I don't particularly want this to be compressed in any way shape or form, as the quality on this movie is nuts and I want to maintain that. The NAS would need to be able to handle this. It doesn't need to be viewed on multiple devices as it won't look as good on anything other than the TV.

I also want to use the NAS as an actual server so I can do some web development on it and use it for hosting basic web sites, using it for VM's and other more techy things.

Things I'm already familiar with: I don't need advice on RAID configurations, HDD's or anything else. I'm all clued up on that, right now I'm only worried about enclosures. Looking at the prices, some seem excessive and I'm wondering if there is any particular reason I should buy an enclosure over just building an actual PC and save a considerable amount of money judging by the prices of some of these NAS's. Is there something I'm missing that a self-built PC wouldn't be able to do that an off the shelf NAS would?

I'm looking for a at least 4 bays of storage minimum, ideally 5-6. Don't need more than that. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    Is 200mbps enough?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:58 PM PDT

First off thank you so much for those who do read and give advice. Im a young adult and have not experienced this situation so I'm grateful for the online community's help.

My girlfriend and I are moving our first apartment together and I am wondering if a 200 mbps plan is adequate for our needs.

At most our phones, the Chromecast, and 2 computer would be connected at a given time (I do online game).

Any suggestions if 200mbps is enough?

Also side note: for xfinity users, is the xfinity gateay modem/router combo worth it?

Should I buy my own cable modem/router? Should I buy a combo? If so which ones, if not, again which ones?

    Thank you again!

    Question about vlans

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:44 PM PDT

I currently have a usg, two 8-port poe unifi switches, and two unifi AP for my home network. With everything being Ubiquiti it was pretty easy setting up vlans. since I can control all the appliances from one interface. However, recently I've gotten a chance to mess around with a srx300 and aruba switch. I'm think about creating a lab for testing purposes. I have a question though about vlans, with it being three different manufactures there isn't any central software to control everything. Would I need create my vlans on the srx and aruba or just the aruba? I'm pretty new to networking. So I apologize if this is a basic question.
