Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:01 AM PDT So, I have an old windows 7 Laptop (Dell Latitude E6400) that is in constant boot...so, I was finally thinking I would finally download Linux onto a flash drive and make it a Linux Machine.. I have a spare 32GB flash drive, would this be big enough to copy Ubuntu onto to get it onto the laptop? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Which terminal emulator do you use - and why? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:45 AM PDT I came from windows where I'd been using wsl/ubuntu inside windows terminal and/or hyperjs. At the time I didn't really understand it, but "xterm" was everywhere; escape sequences, colors, TERM environment variables etc. I read on and learned xterm was the defacto terminal emulator. Time went on and I learned why and what that meant, VT100 emulation etc. But being on windows, I couldn't use xterm obviously. But once I made the switch to fully booting linux and opened xterm for the first time to see what all the hype was.. well, I was absolutely blown away by the sheer number of options and functionality missing in the two emulators I previously used. I still use xterm, and it works and it works well, and I kind of sort of don't see the reason to use anything else? There are SO many others out there though, and I just can't help but wonder, why? Apart from niceties like gui options menus, what makes them better or worse? I am of the understanding that xterm is considered "bloated" because for instance I'm pretty much never going to take advantage of or use or need the tektronix emulation, yet at the same time how considerable is that bloat, does it really matter at all in 2020? Interested to hear opinions and gain any insight. I try to follow an "if it aint broke don't fix it" mantra, but there has to be some reason why we don't all just use xterm and there are 11ty other emulators out there. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Moving the top bar to the bottom of the screen? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:26 AM PDT Recently got Pop OS, and despite a few hurtles using Linux for the first time, I've been enjoying it. The only thing that's bothering me is that the top bar (I don't know if it has a technical name or not, but it shows the time and such.) is, well, at the top. Personally, I always thought it looked much nicer on Windows when that bar was on the bottom. I did some searching around, found some extensions that didn't work, and a lot of non answers, so I came here. Is it even possible to do this? EDIT: I don't want to switch desktop environments. Tried out a couple earlier, but I just liked the way the default Gnome looked and worked. With the exception of that top bar of course. Also to throw another thing on the pile is there a way to swap the function key so I can raise and lower volume without having to hold down Fn? [link] [comments] |
[TooAfraidToAsk] So, everything on linux is a file ._. Posted: 28 Oct 2020 10:12 PM PDT I just read on linux.die.net that everything on a UNIX system is a file, even directories are. My question is, I know cat dir/ won't work because dir is a directory, Is there any way to see a directory (or other things not commonly seen as a file) in a file-like way? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:22 AM PDT Hey guys, relative noob here. I'm trying to install Zorin OS Core, but every time I get a screen that says boot file not found or something very similar, then it gives me the option screen, and whatever I choose (except for Power Off) it gives me a blank screen, no installation screen. Anything I may doing wrong or something with my system? Note: I'm dual-booting with windows, and prior to trying to install Zorin I had successfully installed Pop!_OS and used it for about a month, then deleted yesterday or the day before to get Zorin on my machine. Also Note: I'm on a lenovo flex 5 with the ryzen 5 cpu (apu i guess lol) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 12:52 PM PDT Hi, (totally new) I have a doubt about how I acces to disks in Ubuntu. For example I have W10 in a SSD disk and some programs (like steam or discord) in a HDD partition (I have 2 partitions from HDD, 1 for programs and the other for archives or documents), I can acces to steam without using the SSD. I want to know if in Linux I can do the same, because I want to install Linux in the same SSD, after creating a partition in the SSD, and create another partition in the HDD disk , 3 in total, 1 for programs in W10, 1 for general archives, and the last one for programs which works in Linux (if it works the same way as W10). Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:10 AM PDT I would like to convert my old win7 laptop into a steam machine. I want to use it only for steam games for my younglings (small steam games and mindcraft). Is it better to use Steam Os and pray it recognizes all my hardware and i don't have to manually download drivers or just go with Mint....thx for the help! [link] [comments] |

Any way to make Geary or Evolution sort emails like Outlook does? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 12:42 PM PDT I really like what Outlook does. I have an Outlook.com email and the way it sorts emails is "Focused" and "Other". This makes checking emails a lot easier since it separates what's mostly junk, from "focused" emails. Why Geary and Evolution and not other email client? Well, I use Gnome and both of those email clients integrate really well with Gnome. [link] [comments] |
Having trouble reloading file backup made on Manjaro using Windows Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:53 AM PDT Hi all, Several months ago I installed Manjaro XFCE, kept most of my settings etc default. A little over a month ago I conceded that Linux unfortunately just wasn't working out for me, so in preparation to switch back I backed up my files by dragging them onto my external hard drive using Thunar. I also took the time to double check that everything I care about was in fact on my external drive. After that I overwrote my Manjaro install with a Windows 10 install and opened back up my external drive, and most of my data was still there and readable, but some of my most important files were gone. Windows also gave me some sort of error about the drive needing to be repaired or something to that effect, although unfortunately I can't remember what it said anymore and I don't get that error message when I plug it in anymore. Is there any way I can get the rest of my files back? I haven't lost anything completely irreplaceable, but it would be nice. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Need help with sleep mode in ASUS Laptop. Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:41 AM PDT Hey, I got a ASUS VivoBook X421IAY_M413IA with Ryzen 4700u. Everything works fine however, I noticed a considerable battery drain during suspend, almost as if it wouldn't suspend at all. On closer inspection I found that the fans were still running even on closing the lid. I tried installing ubuntu, mint and manjaro but all had exactly the same problem. I am currently using manjaro. While looking for a solution, I found this, which linked to this for a step by step solution.
gives the output:
and
(commands copied from the first link). The only problem is that since I have an asus laptop the dsdt.dsl is not the same as the one for lenovo laptops, so now I don't know how to fix this, any help will be really appreciated, thank you so much. [link] [comments] |
A Linux beginner. VMs or dual boot? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:09 AM PDT So the problem is, I can't get rid of windows since it's the dominant OS for gaming. In addition to that, I use it for game development as well as occasional video/photo editing (adobe products. Although I know that there are good alternatives available on Linux and if I wanted to, I could run them with Wine. But, I'd like to stick to adobe.). Needless to say, poly-booting multiple Linux distributions on the same machine sounds like a pain and it would take a longer time to boot from one to another given that I don't possess an SSD on my desktop machine. Now the reason I'm asking whether VMs can do the job is that I want to get the full experience of playing around with these distributions with a decent performance. [link] [comments] |
Thunar file manager not updating? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:39 AM PDT I have a Python script that downloads files from a website, and it seems to run fine. The problem is that it seems that the number at the bottom showing how many files are in that directory doesn't update right away, so it's kind of hard to tell if a file has actually been downloaded or not, because the number doesn't immediately reflect the change. And if the files aren't being downloaded at all, I'm not even sure why that is because I've not put any logic to say to skip files if they already exist. Is this a thing that usually happens, or should it be updated right away? I'm running Xubuntu 20.04 off a hard drive in an old laptop. [link] [comments] |
Keyboard is inactive in GRUB, can't choose which system to boot Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:39 AM PDT First, let me get system info out of the way: Linux Mint 20; kernel ver.5.4.0; motherboard: Gigabyte P31-ES3G; CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E8400; GPU: GeForce 9600 GSO 512; RAM: 4GB x2, DDR2. Pretty old machine, I know :) So I bought myself a new SSD, and installed Windows and Linux on it. After installing Mint, I rebooted my PC and found out that my keyboard is inactive in the GRUB loader. I need dual booting since I'm not the only PC user, and there are situations when it's obligatory to use Windows too. I remembered that I had the same issue with the Windows Boot Manager, actually! So what I want is to get dual booting to work. If any of you can provide help, thanks in regards. [link] [comments] |
Why does my cronjob creates empty log file? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:33 AM PDT I created a simple Python script to scrape a specific website. I run the script using a crontab. My intention was that the log file would be created if and only if an error occurs. However, for some reason, the log file is being created even if the script runs successfuly. What am I doing wrong? I used the following syntax (simplified):

Ubuntu installation from USB throws "Initramfs unpacking failed" error and weird output Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:41 AM PDT Hey there, today I wanted to install Ubuntu as dual-boot alongside windows 10. I shrinked my C: drive, converted it from mbr to gpt, deactivated fast boot and secure boot, enabled AHCI and did everything as instructed. After flashing my USB with Ubuntu 20.04 lts i booted from it and was greeted with this https://imgur.com/a/CZsWSuE I googled this issue and found plenty of solutions. I've tried: deactivating Bitlocker(im on win10 home, so I dont even have it) can't access any shell changing bios settings as suggested in most of the forums and youtube videos, however nothing worked i changed USB sticks AND the ports The error message stays the same and the lines below it I cant even read. Current system:MSI B450M Pro VDH MaxRyzen 5 2600RTX 2070Super16GB 3000mhzMain OS drive is a samsung evo 860 This seems to be a common problem, however all the "solutions" dont seem to work for me. EDIT: USB worked as a live system prior to converting C:\ to gpt, however installing as dual-boot was not possible due to C:\ not being gpt [link] [comments] |
Washed off colors on Pop!_OS 20.10 Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:48 AM PDT Hello. This is my first post on this subreddit. So, obviously I have a problem that I can't find a way to fix it. I have used Ubuntu before on my old PC and it was working perfectly fine. So when I got a new computer I chose Pop!_OS as my main system. I switched to Linux 3 months ago, but I never had this problem. The specs on my new pc are : AMD® Ryzen 5 3600 6-core processor × 12 NVIDIA Corporation TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER] 16 GB RAM I downloaded the Nvidia .iso file I didn't get any errors while installing - I did a swap partition an EFi and the base partition. Everything went smoothly, but after the install, I noticed that the colors are a little off. I did the basic stuff - updated the system, etc. But the colors were still like this. I can't seem to find an option in the Nvidia x server settings or in the settings program. I suspect that there is something wrong with the display driver or something like that. If you can help me, please reply. [link] [comments] |
