Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:49 AM PDT I got into UniFi because of ease of use and sexy UI. Now I need something more powerful. I could upgrade my hardware with bigger UniFi gear, or go a different route. What are your thoughts? Context provided below. I'm a cybersecurity engineer with a bit of networking in my background. I have zero issues getting things done over the command line, I have fiber and ethernet in my home, VLANs, multiple servers, Docker, etc. I'm a geek. I lack the visibility, protection, and performance that I want. I am a fan of UniFi, but not a diehard one. It is pretty, it works, and it appears powerful - right up until you try to actually get accurate data about who is doing what and when on your network. The UniFi USG simply isn't strong enough to run DPI or threat protection at my home's internet connection speed of 1 gigabit up/down. I've also seen and read that even when running, DPI isn't great and you still don't have a real picture of who is doing what when. I want to be able to see everything, prevent most forms of attack, and move bits at max speed. Money is a factor, but I do not expect a zero or low-dollar solution - visibility is my main goal. Current setup:

Ideal Home Network (starting from scratch) Posted: 01 Oct 2020 08:02 PM PDT I'll be buying a home soon (about a year or so) and I want to setup a solid home network. How would you structure it if you were starting from scratch? My plan is basically to have a 32 port switch in the basement and then run Cat 6a (at least) to each room. I want each room to have 2 to 3 lines ending with a keystone jack thing. Then I was thinking each floor could have 1 to 2 Ubiquiti access points for wireless (with the Ubiquiti router in the basement connected to the switch). Does this sound good? Also I realize Cat 6 is rated for 10gb which seems pretty darn future proof but is there any reason to go Cat 7 or Fiber Optic? My understanding is that Cat 6 gets the job done and fiber is not practical for residential setups yet. Any advice is welcome. I want to do it one time but do it right! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:50 PM PDT I'm getting faster internet an was wondering, does the speed of the cable that I connect my router to my modem with affect my internet speed? [link] [comments] |
Need help with the pre-wired cat5 ethernet Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:26 PM PDT Here is the picture of the current setup - https://imgur.com/a/4fgbTfx The internet cable that is connected in the panel seems to go to the 'office' port that the internet people came and installed the modem at. I tried disconnecting the internet wire on the panel that goes to 'office' and connecting it directly to the modem, but it doesn't work. Any ideas? I'm a noob. [link] [comments] |
What setup to for external garage from house? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:17 PM PDT Hi! Is it possible to extend my home wifi to my external garage/shop? I measured and from the spot in the house where my current router is (netgear nighthawk ax4300), my mini office on my garage/shop is about 170ft away 😬 what items or setup can i do/use? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Beginner's first attempt at home networking Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:40 AM PDT For the past two weeks, I've been trying to learn and understand the Ubiquiti/Unifi system. I want to install it in my parents' 3-story house, where the modem is located in the 2nd floor. There are spots in the house where the wifi from the modem doesn't reach, namely rooms in the first and third floors. Unfortunately, none of the rooms have any access to any ethernet ports. I'm wondering if this setup that I've had in mind would work out. Would appreciate any help that I can get. I was planning on getting a first generation Unifi Cloud Key + Unifi Switch Flex Mini + 2 APs for the first and third floor. Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
Spotty internet just started happening. Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:46 AM PDT My internet cuts out every 5 seconds or so, pauses for about 2, and repeats over and over again, on any program I use. Online games, zoom calls, discord calls, everything. I restarted my router, changed my dns, but to no avail. I haven't seen this problem online and it's getting very annoying. What should I do? If there is a more appropriate sub please link me to it. [link] [comments] |
this might be a stupid question Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:57 PM PDT So basically my house mate of over a year has built his own NAS system to share films and what not. He recently connected my pc to the network and I was wondering if there should be any security concerns from my view. As in can he see my data and such as im connected to the network. idk what details you will need to answer this if any but the system itself is connected to the houses router. it runs through sinology. I realise this might be a really silly question but I'm just thinking back to school days where the network owner i.e. the school claimed to be able to see what we were doing [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:52 PM PDT Hi guys struggling to pinpoint where to throw my money at when it comes to strong reliable WiFi signal for a 6000 sq ft home. I currently have an amplifi hd mesh system that is about 3 years old. It's giving me a ton of problems from connectivity to the app interface going from decent to now junk. A feature I would like is to be able to pause the internet on specific devices. It would make getting the kids down for dinner a lot easier. So I'm hesitant to go with the next best thing with these mesh systems as the amplifi hd was supposed to be the best at the time and I've been very disappointed. Can I get some suggestions as to which direction I should be looking. Usually I would do a few weeks worth of research but this is causing me some immediate headaches as it's affecting my ability to work from home. [link] [comments] |
Upgrade AT&T's Modem (Fiber 1000) Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:49 PM PDT I have AT&T fiber internet 1000 Mbit/s and I would like to maximize its performance. These are my speed test results: - Wi-Fi: D 200, U 100 - Ethernet: D 500, U 350 - On gateway (speed between ATT and my crappy modem/router): D 980, U 890!!! It looks like ATT is actually providing what advertised (almost) but my crappy BGW210 modem/router is a limiting factor here. I asked the ATT technician when he came home to install if I could upgrade to a better performing modem. He said that ATT doesn't allow that and the most I could do is upgrage the router and bridge it to the BGW210 modem to boost Wi-Fi. Reading online, I'm not entirely sure his info is accurate. Can I upgrade modem? If so, where can I found how to set up the new one? [link] [comments] |
Need help - Outdoor Ethernet cable Or Uniquiti access points? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 03:46 PM PDT Hi I have ATT fiber internet in my garage. And I have my work setup in my backyard outside the house in a small room. As expected the network speed is the worst. I am barely getting 10MBPS download speed. I read up a lot of posts here. But I am still unsure which one to pick. Outdoor ethernet cable - 1. I cannot bury the wire, the floor is concrete :( Can I run the wire overhead? 2. Do I need to ground the wire because of lightning or anything? Or should I just go with Ubiquiti access points? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:07 PM PDT We are a gaming household that does a mix of PC and playstation gaming. I'm looking to upgrade my router for WiFi 6 and we live in a pretty large house. So I'm looking for a good WiFi 6 mesh router for gaming. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
2 SSID's with one of them hidden? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 03:13 PM PDT Hi, I have just purchased an Archer C7 and i am currently having problems with very poor and fluctuating WIFI signal (it even couldn't travel 10 meters away directly from the router with open view), I have tried modifying transmit power to High and changed freq to 20mhz in the 2.4ghz band and disabled the 5ghz completely but the same problem applies, Now when i used a software called Wifi info viewer i noticed something weird which is another wifi network without SSID is appearing in the same channel as mine whenever i switch channel i really don't know what is that and if that's has any relation to my current signal and instability problems? My setup is as the following : ISP line > Modem (disabled wifi signal at all) > Archer C7 (Contected with cable) Please can someone help me or does the router faulty? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:36 PM PDT So like it's stated above I had to move to a new area because of my job. In my area everyone recommends spectrum and I am signed up on their 400 package. I have a Netgear CM 600 modem but I do not have a router. (Gave it to a friend who broke his). I'm behind on what works nowadays. I know wifi 6 is big right now but other than my note 20 ultra I don't have anything else that has wifi 6 capability. As far as what I'll be using it for it's: Online gaming Internet surfing Streaming iPads, galaxy tabs Wireless Home security cameras Smart home devices (plugs, lightbulbs, thermometers etc) I know it's vague but any help is appreciated Edit: house is roughly 1600 square feet. Micro Networking Lab for university students, what can i use? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:13 PM PDT I was thinking on buying a raspberry pi 4 8gb for me and a 3 other buddies so that I could make a server out of my house. The purpose being to share files, make networking labs and learning linux through virtual machines out of our own homes. I don't know if this is viable but any tips would be appreciated, thanks. Cost Effective solution for internet Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:09 PM PDT For the past couple weeks I've been looking at a way to get home internet in my place, I've looked at bell's fixed wireless internet which is a pretty high price per month, looked at satellite internet which should be my last option really, and now I'm back to bell or getting an att SIM card with a plan. Just looking for advice on what would make the most sense. I live in Coral Harbour Nunavut. I'm also just trying to find something to tie me over till star link arrives here. [link] [comments] |
Have I completely missed something in the way of networking or did my electricians screw up? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:39 PM PDT We are wrapping up a new construction house and we were trying to find where the cables terminate. After looking around I noticed they actually terminate outside...and when I was opening all the boxes I realized they ran one cable across to all the rooms and then back to the beginning. So it's just one long cable. Having them terminate outside is one thing. But this makes no sense? Unless there's a new way to run networks that I'm missing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:36 AM PDT Hi r/HomeNetworking I'm a bit green when it comes to this networking stuff. I currently have spectrum has an ISP. The router and modem aren't that great for WiFi. Ever since I moved in and had to have the router and modem moved upstairs so I can be hard wired, the WiFi has been awful for my brother downstairs and even for myself in my room on my PS4 and phone. Lately I've just turned the WiFi off my phone. I've looked into it a bit and there's horrible reviews for the same router we use(ASKEY SAC2V1K). Read that buying my own router should help even just a little bit so I ordered a Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 since it's said to be compatible with Spectrum. It comes in tomorrow and I'm wondering if it's plug and play to setup before I start work in the morning. TIA [link] [comments] |
Replacement router suggestions. Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:24 PM PDT I have a Linksys WRT1900 ACS in a 2500 Sqf home wifi is dropping out more and more lately. Willing to upgrade in the price range of $125.00 to 225.00 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:06 AM PDT I've got an opnsense box as the back end, and 3 openwrt AP's through out my house. From what I have understood, it's best to have them all on separate channels. Can anyone confirm this? [link] [comments] |
Noob Question - Rack Screw Size Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:05 AM PDT A couple months ago I bought a used Sun 42u rack. As I'm piecing my new network together, I'm having a bit of a random problem. I bought 10-32 screws to mount everything, as it is an older rack without square holes for the inserts (just round threaded holes). My problem is I'm stripping screws half the time because it seems like 10-32 is juuuuuuust too big for these holes. Some of them fit fine, others are a disaster. Is there another size screw I should be trying, or some other solution? [link] [comments] |
2 ISP's, 2 Routers, 1 Three Bedroom House Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:05 AM PDT Hi guys, Hope you are all doing well :) I was wondering if anyone could help me? I have Virgin media Internet currently, with a SH2 in modem mode and an ASUS RT-AC86U as a router. My question is, Im looking to get Sky Internet as-well-as the Virgin media broadband. If I put the two routers in the same room, will this cause any major issues? Kind regards, Ben [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:59 PM PDT If I want a device to be on a vlan does the switch it's directly plugged into need to be the switch that can configure the vlan (smart), or does there just need to be one smart switch somewhere in the network? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:50 PM PDT Hi, I am looking to update my parents house as they are getting frustrated with poor wifi, i have managed to convince them to install networking points to the workshop, office and upstairs but now i want to install access points. Here in is the problem, i don't know what is best. I have been looking at ubiquiti stuff but for a couple of access points and the fact i would need to replace the virgin media router and get a switch to connect up the tv and other devices it starts to get pricey. On amazon you can find access points for as cheap as £25. The only real requirement is i would like the wifi to be seamless as otherwise they may still encounter the same issues with poor wifi. I love the idea of a mesh network but given the furthest nodes will be more than 50m apart i didn't think this would work. I am open to suggestions and help looking at 2/3 nodes depending if i need to get a router. [link] [comments] |
Strange WiFi issues, suspecting interference from outside Posted: 01 Oct 2020 04:33 PM PDT I just moved into a new 3 floor house (upstairs, main, basement) that has an existing Ubiquiti network maintained by one of my roommates, which consists of an ER-POE, one AP-AC-Mini, and one AP-AC-LR. Upon setting up my laptop on the WiFi network, I noticed that occasionally I would see issues with webpages loading, discord calls dropping/lagging, and massive lag spikes spanning 3-5 seconds when streaming games using Nvidia Gamestream or Steam Link from my PC in the basement. This behaviour could also be seen on my phone when streaming or using discord as well. When pinging the router from my device, I could see pings ranging from 1-5ms for about 1-5 minutes, then 4-5 seconds of 40-200ms pings, followed by 1-5 minutes of 1-5ms pings. Ping spikes could be seen when pinging any wired device on the network, and when pinging the AP's IP directly. Here is a summary of what I have tried to troubleshoot this:
Here you can see about 15 minutes of ping tests to understand the issue. Next thing I'll be trying is pulling out my SDR to see if there is any interference close to 1ghz (upper limit of my SDR equip) around the time those ping spikes happen. Anyone have any other ideas on what to try? I'm just about out of ideas here. [link] [comments] |
