Which CAT ethernet cable should I use? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 12:55 PM PDT I'm going to be getting a gigabit switch, and I'm not sure if I should get a CAT 7 or a CAT 6. My computer only goes up to 100mbps, so I want to know if it's worth it or not. [link] [comments] |
Custom Brackets for Structured Media Enclosures Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT I decided I wasn't going to pay silly money for Leviton's Structured Media brackets. I'm sorry but $25 for a cheap plastic bracket is outrageous. I had some left over acrylic sheets and a cheap Chinese laser engraver at my disposal so I decided to make my own. After a couple iterations, this is what I came up with. It's not perfect and I have some ideas on how to improve the design to accommodate a few more pieces of kit I haven't mounted yet. The brackets use Leviton's push-lock pins to mount inside the SME and you can use screws, Velcro strips, or cable ties to attach your kit. The screw holes were sized to accept #6-32 threaded screws, the kind used to mount 3.5" HDDs in PCs because I have them readily on-hand in large quantities. [link] [comments] |
1gb modem and router suggestion? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:52 AM PDT A buddy of mine is finishing building his house and he just subscribed for 1gb internet from xfinity. We are looking for a good modem and router. The issue i forsee being the size of the house and the amount of devices. Almost everything is wireless including his kitchen appliances and his wireless cameras for the security system. He said he will have a few things hardwired but 30+ items wireless. I have looked all over the place for recommendations and cannot seem to find someone with a similar setup. What would everyone recommend? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Wired Internet keeps disconnecting every hour ~ or so Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:59 PM PDT Hello r/HomeNetworking. I currently live in a student style apartment complex, where we cannot really control anything internet wise, but we do have both WiFi and Wired Internet. As a competitive Cod player, I rely heavily on using wired internet to play better. I've been living in this apartment complex for roughly 2 months, and every so often, the internet just complete disconnects from my PC, and will only turn on in 2-3 minutes, almost as if it's a "spike." The times it happens is also pretty random, but they occur frequently. They can be as often as once every 15 minutes, or once every 2-3 hours. I asked my friend, who lives in the same apartment complex (plays competitive Cod), different apartment if he experienced the same problems as I do. He says he does, but it only happens once every 2-3 weeks. My question is if there's any way I can fix this? It's also worth noting my internet speeds are very good, I get 500 Upload, 800 Download. I am also using a Cat 7 Ethernet cable, that is 75 feet long. [link] [comments] |
NanoHD to Tripp Lite switch detected as 100mbps Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:42 PM PDT I just had an electrician run Cat6 to my attic so I could ceiling mount a NanoHD. I have the Cat6 run 2 stories down into the basement and connected to a as Tripplite 8 port Poe switch. Everything is working but the LED on the nano is reading orange which I understand is 100mbps. The run couldn't be more than 100m (probably closer to 50m). Any thoughts? Is it possible they crimped the wire wrong? Any ideas on how to diagnose? [link] [comments] |
Docking Station Causing Networking Drops Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:51 PM PDT Hello, Last week I started using a thunderbolt 3 dock for my laptop to clean up my work setup and ever since we've been having issues with our network going down. It seems to happen whenever I'm connected to my company's VPN and disconnect the cable connecting my laptop to the dock. When I do this the router indicates that it has no internet connection. All of our devices will still be able to connect to the router but won't be able to access the internet. Reconnecting my laptop to the dock will resolve this issue, even after an hour of being disconnected, but that's the only solution we've found other than rebooting the router and model. Based on the lights on our modem, it appears to be working fine and is attempting to send data to the router but I don't know of a rigorous way of testing the modem. If I turn off the dock before discounting it doesn't seem to be an issue nor if I directly the ethernet cable from the dock. TP-Link AC1750 Router I used a cradle style dock built by the laptop manufacturer and never had any issues with it. Also, I live with one of my coworkers who uses a thunderbolt dock with his laptop and connects to the same VPN and he's never encountered this problem. It seems super weird to me that a docking station could cause this issue and I'm really curious about what's causing this to happen. I hope someone here might have an idea. Thanks in advance! Monitor my local network to find out who is using the most bandwidth? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:05 PM PDT Hello there, I am new to this kinda stuff so apologies for anything I forget to mention, please ask me for follow-up info if needed, I will gladly give it to you. So, every so often my internet connection slows down by a lot and I live with another 4 family members, and even tho they say they are not doing anything, they might be doing something on the network that they do not know of. Like last time, my sister was facetiming with her friends and because she used all of the upload bandwidth our network got slowed down by a lot and it took a while to figure out that that was the problem. So I downloaded something called "SolarWinds Real-Time Bandwidth Monitor" and it wants an IP address, SNMP version and community string. Ok, so first off, the IP address is the local IP address of my router, right? So its something like 192.168.0.x. For the next two, I downloaded an app called "SolarWinds SNMP Enabler" so that I could get the first program to work (enable SNMP and get the community string.) But my router is a TP-link and the way you log into it is through a TP-link account (e-mail and password) but when I enter this into the SNMP enabler it says "login failed with [my e-mail] credentials" How can I avoid this? Can I get the tp-link router to want a basic login? In the SNMP enabler I entered "192.168.0.1" as the IP address (internal, right?) and login and password were the same as with which I log into the router. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:52 PM PDT Closing on my new house tomorrow which has coax ran to each room behind outlet covers. Was going to get some outlet covers that have the connector on the front. My question is would these affect speed at all? They aren't splitters so it would still only go to one device and Id rather have them rather than a cable sticking out of the wall. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Okay to connect behind two routers? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:52 PM PDT Basically I have a modem/router combo, and I have a ethernet running from that a few hundred feet to another router, and then my pc is connected to the second router with ethernet. Is that fine to do? Do I need to use any special settings on either device? [link] [comments] |
Rookie Error - please help (Australia NBN) Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:49 PM PDT Hi all, I am trying to set up a second router to service back area of my house that does not get good coverage. We have data points so can run Cat5e straight from 1st router into ethernet wall point and connect to other router from the respective ethernet point in that room. I have plugged the ethernet cable into the second router at which point WLAN & LAN1 button flash but internet button does not. I have been into Router 1's settings and set DHCP to begin after 10.1.1.10 to allow a static connection to the second router. I cannot seem to get any internet access in this second router however to be able login to the router settings. For reference it is a Huawei HG869 - Home Gateway. I have reset the second router also so should be on default settings. Any advice would be appreciated. Kind regards [link] [comments] |
30 metre/ 98 feet cat 6 cable - flat or round Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:59 PM PDT I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions regarding flat vs round cables. I only need it for Zoom meetings in my room as I get disconnected very frequently. The reason I need such a long one is because there is no data point in my room and I have to loop a cable around the living room to prevent tripping. My folks do not want to lay a permanent cable across the house. It won't be a permanent thing, as I will have to pack the cable away after each Zoom session (2x a week, 2 hours each time). Is it okay to get a 30 metre/ 98 feet flat cable or will it really cause problems in terms of speed, interference, etc? [link] [comments] |
Troublesome Cat6 modular connectors Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:58 PM PDT Has anyone in the UK (or US) used these before https://www.cablemonkey.co.uk/cat6-accessories/9549-ccs-cat6-utp-rj45-plug.html Even when I firmly push the wire guide snug against the pvc sheeth, the wire guide just dosent want to snap into place. Forcing it in causes the wires to bulge out of the wire gaurd, and the two staggered wires (white & green/green) are forced backwards causing them to not be properly terminated. I've had to use a flat-head screwdriver to push the damn wire gaurd into place nearly on every attempt. Am I doing something wrong, or should I just invest in better connectors? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:56 PM PDT I signed up with Unlimitedville on 7/15/20. It has been just over 3 months. I live in a rural area with a great view. I was able to connect with their blue plan (AT&T) getting four out of five bars. For the first month it worked great. Then after that, the following two months have been horrible with multiply disconnects on the daily. I am an architect who relies on steady internet. I was about to tear my hair out. I made multiply calls to their tech division, tweaking this and that and finally realizing that their business arrangement with AT&T was at issue. Confirming my supposition, I received an email yesterday from Unlimitedville saying they are discontinuing the blue plan (AT&T): My choices are to sign up on one of their other carrier plans or get on a waitlist until they actually have an solid business deal with AT&T. What the heck? The only plan that works in my area is the blue plan, and what is one supposed to do, wait until they reach some sort of new agreement with AT&T? Somehow in all of this, there is no option cancel and be reimbursed for the $199 one time membership fee that I paid 3 months ago. What kind of company does this? One that is unethical and doesn't care about keeping its customer base. Hence, here I am writing my first ever review and hoping I help someone out there by saying, 'Stay clear of this company. They do not care about you.' [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:54 PM PDT Hi guys, right now I have a Modem Router combo which isn't working to well for me. My house is small and one story but the location of the modem router is in the dining room while my room is on the other side of the house which isn't too far but there are walls between us (and I close my door mainly). I would have issues when I'm in my lecture class and the connection would be poor when my dad watch youtube on a smart TV or I watch something on my phone. Sometimes, I play try to play games with my friends and I would be in a voice call with them but they would be breaking off. They could hear me, but I couldn't hear them. Anyways, I am currently looking to invest in a modem and a router separately. Not sure if it will exactly help. I don't know much about this type of stuff so hopefully I can get some help. Right now, I have xfinity 100mbps. My house is a 1-story and not that big, it's 1,650 building sqft. I'm thinking of getting the Netgear Cable Modem CM500 (unless you have another recommendation). For the router, I was thinking of between Netgear Nighthawk AC2300 or the Netgear Nighthawk AX5200 but I'm unsure what the difference is and which one would be better or more suitable for me? My budget is less than $300...if possible. I'm open to other recommendations. Thank you so much for the help! Let me know if I need to provide more information. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:05 PM PDT I am trying to set up internet at a barn that is about 100 yards from a house. In the house has a wifi repeater on the side facing the barn. I do not know what kind it is. I get full signal at the barn. Problem is there is a device that needs internet but does not have wifi. So I am trying to find a access point that I can put on the side of the barn and connect to the wifi from the house but output a wired ethernet connection to this device. I tried to use a Ubiquiti UAC AP M but it can only connect to other Ubiquiti APs in order to use the wireless uplink feature. If all else fails I will replace the repeater at the house with Unifi product but wanted to see what my options where. [link] [comments] |
Router restarting a couple of times most nights around same time, and weird logs Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:47 PM PDT Hey all, hope you're well So I'm gonna try my best to describe what's going on here, but frankly it's pretty whack and I don't understand it. Router is a TP-LINK Archer C1200. I live in a sharehouse. For months, we've been running into the problem of our router resetting on us anywhere up to 3 or 4 times a night. This issue has generally been focused around ~11PM-11:30PM, but has cropped up a little earlier and even as late as around 1AM. Generally speaking we only notice it when someone is gaming, but I have seen it happen when no one's been gaming. We've reset the router to factory defaults, as well as checked that the firmware is up-to-date. As far as I can tell, these are the relevant logs, shown in chronological order of the latest event I'm aware of. So far as I can grock it, what we're seeing here is that the laptop is resetting and/or losing connection to the internet, and so reverting to the default UNIX time of 1970. Then, as it starts back up, defaulting to what I assume is its manufacturing date in 2018, before eventually coming back to the correct time half an hour later. There are a couple of weird things that I can pick out so far: 1) There is a 30-minute gap between when the time initially craps out to 1970, and when it comes back to the correct time. In reality, these resets take only a few minutes before the router is (seemingly) working fine again. 2) I know for a fact that the internet shut off twice during this 30-minute period, as I noticed the first one but didn't care, then noticed the second and decided to check out the logs. I expected to see record of both events, but that's not what I'm seeing. Furthermore, I looked further back in the logs and noticed that none of the prior events over the past several days are recorded. I know for a fact that several happened, and were at the time recorded in the logs. 3) The only thing recorded in the logs going back days is the error you see, "Config importing failed". Occasionally one of these logs will have the build date instead of the present day, but that's it. I could just be focusing way too hard on details here and missing the big picture, so here are my current best guesses: 1) The problem is with the ISP. I really don't know why this would be, but it's up there. 2) The problem is something to do with how many devices are attached to the network. It's worth mentioning that these events effect a device connected via ethernet as well as over the wifi. 3) Something to do with our IP being dynamic. I considered this at first because the issue happens at roughly the same time, but I figured it would be more consistent if this were the case. 4) Our router is just cooked and we need a new one. 5) Vengeful spirit Would really appreciate any input y'all have, and thanks so much if you've made it this far. All the best! (Edited to include router model) [link] [comments] |
Have Cox, need to upgrade Cable modem, what's the easiest yet best in terms of reliability? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:46 PM PDT Tired of dropped work network calls, can't happen anymore. Amazon reviews seem super skeptical as of late, so I can't really seem to trust those. I checked the posting guidelines, and unfortunately no recomendations there. My setup has been reliable for about 3 years now, and now it's faltering at times, never has been before. I suspect it's because Cox doesn't do anything to fuel increased internet-at-home demands, but they will never admit it. Do I have any options to ensure my internet doesn't get disrupted? I'm a B+ in terms of tech, I understand many things, but cannot get too techy. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:35 PM PDT My computer is connected to an Asus router, and the router is connected to my spectrum modem. My router is on the 2nd floor, which is where my computer is, but I play my VR on the 1st floor, and I want to stream games from my PC to Oculus wirelessly. I have got it working with the virtual desktop app, but since the router is on the 2nd floor, it lags. So what I have right now is: Modem -> Router -> PC -> Oculus Since the router is on the 2nd floor, it lags when connected to my headset, so what I'm wondering is if I can place my router on the 1st floor closer to my headset and add an ethernet switch to make it: Modem -> Ethernet Switch -> PC Ethernet Switch -> 1st Floor Router -> Oculus Or do I have to add another router and set it as AP more with the same SSID and make it: Modem -> Another Router -> PC Another Router -> 1st Floor Router -> Oculus The routers/Ethernet switch will be connected with an Ethernet cable. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:26 PM PDT I recently purchased and setup the nighthawk MK63. It worked fine for about a week but now major issues.

Mesh WiFi System Recommendation and Query Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:21 PM PDT Hi there, My apologies if this isn't the first time a question like this came up in the subreddit! Appreciate if you can help me out on this! Thanks!!! [link] [comments] |
Please help, need service for senior father Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:20 PM PDT Hello everyone. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question or not, but I really need help finding an ISP that will provide cheap internet to my senior father. He lives in a small town in northern Virginia and the only viable option was Xfinity (bunch of crooks and scumbags) when he first got them, he paid less than 50$ a month. By the time he cancelled, his bill had jumped to over 80$ for no discernable reason, which is outrageous for the package he had. He cancelled his phone, television service and internet because he was spending more than he was getting from his social security retirement funds (also a bunch of filthy crooks) and now me and the rest of the family, including most of us who aren't within visiting distance, have no way to contact him now. We've tried looking at everything but you either have to have some disability or be on Medicaid or food stamps to qualify, which he receives no other funding than his retirement checks and he's on Medicare, not Medicaid. Any help or information is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Having trouble accessing AP and router config pages Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:19 PM PDT I am trying to set up an access point for my small business but I can't access the config page for the Engenius EAP1300. I have the main Comcast-provided modem in the office which provides wifi to the office and is connected to a main switch. The switch provides wired connections throughout the building. Outside, in the warehouse, the wifi signal from the main modem keeps dropping due to a weak signal on our barcode scanners so I opted to purchase the Engenius AP. From the main switch inside, there is only one wired ethernet connection to the warehouse which, prior to this, went directly to the warehouse desktop workstation. Now, I am using an old Cisco/Linksys EA4500 router as a secondary switch to split the one ethernet connection into two, one to the workstation and one to the access point. The internet connection seems to be working. I am typing this from the warehouse workstation and I can connect to the access point via wifi through my phone and browse the web. My dilemma stems from the fact that I can't access the config pages of either the EA4500 or the EAP1300. I want to turn the wifi off on the EA4500 entirely and I need to change the name and add a password to the EAP1300 as they are both currently open wifi networks. The fun part is, I tried finding the assigned IP addresses of both devices using cmd > 'arp -a' and neither MAC address is listed. The workstation I tried the command in is literally connected to the router via ethernet. I tried all the listed IP addresses, anyway, and none of them get me what I"m looking for. The default gateway IP, of course, takes me to the config page of the Comcast modem. I do not see either device listed in the Comcast modem's connected devices list. They're not conveniently named, in any case. Hope that wasn't too confusing. Happy to clarify anything. Links are screenshots of the ipconfig and arp -a [link] [comments] |
Comcast 1gig "BufferBloat"? Any solutions? Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:06 PM PDT I've been researching to find the root cause of the "micro lag bursts" I've been getting while gaming on my new network (just moved). And did the DSLReports test: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/66104811 It seems like the problem is with the Upload. Download is fast & smooth with no ping delay. Upload seems to trigger "250+ms" ping delay. I'm using Comcast 1gig network with the default modem with direct LAN connection (not wifi): Any resources or tips on what to look into next? Appreciate all the help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:34 PM PDT AT&T has stopped offering DSL, and Verizon is also quietly removing DSL. The writing's on the wall, DSL might not survive much longer. I live in a rather rural area, the nearest cable service is about 5 miles. There's 6 or 7 houses between where the cable ended and my house, the cost is probably too much for too little return. I have lots of tree, I would need to set up a tower around 100 feet to get satellite dish up high, and I'm still getting mixed statement about satellite latency but if it's laggy then playing game would suck badly. Cellular reception sucks here. Some days I could pick up something but at anemic speed taking as much as a minute to load reddit.com on my phone. Other time I get no cellular data and even can't make or receive call. So unless someone builds a new tower closer, the current reception isn't useful for every day internet use. So what would be my option if my ISP told me DSL is being discontinued soon? Wanted to be covered when it happens. I do hope the DSL will stick around in my area until there's cable, fiber, or close cellular tower. [link] [comments] |
