Is it ok to Never Close laptop?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:13 AM PDT

(pardon my bad grammar, not a native speaker)

i found out one of the hinges of the laptop is bust.

and it's now holding on the shell via a single tiny screw as opposed to three screws on the other side.

(the tiny screw sockets have broken),so I've decided not to put any more pressure on the one remaining screw on the bust side, and thus rarely closing the laaptop. so does anyone see any proble with my new arrangement.( im little sad now, cus its the only thing i have to study and do stuff, aint got a phone.)

I also got a lead from a friend, and should rescue a ASUS ROG G70S tonight

    Struggle to choose

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:22 AM PDT

Hi all, need a bit of advice. Cannot seem to decide on which laptop to buy.

Options are between the lenovo l340 15 i5 gtx 1650 and the HP pavilion 15 i5 gtx 1660 ti.

Both laptops have the same specs with 16gb ram, no ssd, etc. Would mostly use the laptop for work related activities such as rendering 3d models, design software like autocad and civil 3d. Also game a bit when not working, but not a serious gamer. I have watched youtube reviews on both laptops, would like to hear your opinion and people who have one of the above mentioned laptops, please chip in and let me know.

    What do the specs mean?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT

How do the specs of a laptop (or a PC) on paper translate to the real world usage? e.g. 4 cores, 8 threads, 3.1GHz, 16GB RAM, dual/ single channel, CPU cache size, 4/6GB GPU, the RAM frequency, the HDD 5400/7200 RPM etc., what is responsible for normal everyday use like browsing, using documents, file explorer etc.? What's used in gaming (apart from the GPU), streaming Netflix, watching a video on the laptop, opening multiple applications and switching between them etc.?

    Laptop for a student

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:07 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm starting university in a couple of months, and I need to buy a new laptop. Thing is, me as a big guy, never got along with small computers, so I need a computer that'll be big enough for me. In terms of specs I'm looking for decent to good performance, but nothing to extreme as I'm not planning to play games or use any heavy softwares. I've figured out an i7 & 8GB of RAM would suffice, but I'm not too sure. My budget is 1000$-1500$.

    Thanks a lot

YouTube won’t work on Chrome or Edge, i’ve tried it all

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Right so randomly my laptop stopped loading youtube videos on chrome, so i searched up how to fix it, and it worked again after switching it so JavaScript was allowed and hardware acceleration (something like that) was turned off.

A week later, and the same thing happens. I then try all the other guides for how to fix this issue, updating and restarting my laptop, reinstalling chrome, resetting chrome settings etc. still didn't work.

I then tried Edge thinking it was just a chrome problem, but it also won't load there either. I've tried Internet Explorer but it is excruciatingly slow, i might just have to deal with that however, it's basically pointless trying it's that slow.

A very first world problem i'm aware, but i imagine you get me

    Student laptop purchasing advice

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:23 PM PDT

    Hey everybody,

I'm a Canadian highschool student looking to buy a laptop. I'm going to enter the 11th grade this September.

I mainly intend to use it for schoolwork, with little to no gaming planned.

My budget is 1100 Canadian dollars, although I'm willing to buy a more expensive laptop if it is worth the money.

Any recommendations are appreciated, thanks for listening in :)

I need help deciding on a good gaming laptop.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:30 AM PDT

As the title says, I am looking for a good gaming laptop that can run fairly demanding games on the recommended quality settings without exploding. Price range is anything under $2000 but preferably around $1000. I am looking towards getting the Dell G5 15 Gaming Laptop. Is this a good choice or are there better options. The laptop I'm looking for needs to be compatible with the Oculus Quest. If anyone has any recommendations or can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Hello, could anyone recommend an affordable/fairly cheap laptop (under or around £300) that has quite a lot of storage and is quite fast. Thankyou

    College student looking for laptop

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:13 PM PDT

Hi, I'm going into my freshman year of college and looking for a laptop. I have no clue what to get and need some help. I was looking for one that could be efficient for school use but also have gaming capabilities. I would plan on playing minecraft, csgo, tf2, and some others games. Nothing too huge like battlefield or cod. Im not sure what type of software I would need for this and it's price range but I have a budget of around 1,000-1,200. Im not looking for a beast laptop, just something that will get the job done.

student looking for a reliable and efficient laptop (between 600 and 900 euros)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:24 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    600-900 euros, France

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I am open to refurbs and used

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Pro computer, long lasting battery, at least intel core i5

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Rather small screen size as I will have to transport it a lot

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programs such as R studio, games as heavy as Minecraft

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not really gaming on computer

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Reliable build quality

*Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. *

Windows 10 pro, a computer that can be easily cleaned, good sound and resolution if possible

I really don't know a lot about computer, but I wish to invest into a laptop that will last me for long, allowing me to pursue my studies (biological sciences, I do not need much more than a few softwares such as R studio) as well as my personnal desires (playing some light games, watching movies in good conditions).

I would love to have your opinion on this computer I found, to know if you believe this one correspond to my desires : Dell, Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1.

I thank you a lot for your time and efforts, I hope I was clear enough in my message, have a great day

Does anyone who used CAD have/use a touchscreen laptop?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:26 PM PDT

I'm a sophomore going into mechanical design engineering and I'm looking to finally upgrade my 5 year old laptop. I've been doing research and have been looking around on Reddit for recommendations.

I've become kind of infatuated with the Lenovo Yoga c940 2 in 1 laptop. I've never had a good quality laptop and so I'm confused, and more so kind of attracted to all these additional features that I've never had before. I'm not sure whether or not this is a good choice, plus I'm curious as to whether or not the touchscreen serves a purpose

Any thoughts or maybe better recommendations for a $1500 budget?

What computers do not have a swelling battery problem?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:25 PM PDT

I'm writing this on a ticking time bomb--very swollen battery on both sides of a 2-in-1 PC, may be a single battery pack.

After years(!) of arduous research and tweaking specification requirements, I had picked out what laptop I would prefer to get next, in at least few years' time; for me, this would be early in replacing an older computer, as the one currently being used was released in 2017 and bought used in 2018. But realizing far after the fact that the battery bulge problem is serious and that I should not be using the only device I have with access to an Internet browser, I need to buy a new computer soon. And likely downgrade in specs due to financial limitations.

According to online articles, all rechargeable devices that use lithium batteries could potentially overheat and swell. Which laptop models are known to be particularly well-engineered to avoid catastrophic problems like this? I need a reliable, portable, durable device.
